Alan woke with a start when his datapad started bleeping, he still felt tired and realised that his sleep had not been a very pleasant one.  Sliding off the bunk, Alan checked out the message he had just received.  It was from Rizzit, requesting that the Iron Horse squad make a patrol of the perimeter.

Alan got himself together and went to wake the troops.  Waking them was easy, that was apart from Vince.  Vince seemed to enjoy sleeping and getting him awake was no easy matter.  Alan smiled inwardly when Dwarf tried to wake Vince by lifting him off the bed and dropping him on the cold floor.  If that doesn’t wake him, nothing will thought Alan.  True enough, it did indeed wake up Vince, however Alan heard Vince swearing profusely.

"That’s enough Vince” said Alan, as he opened up the tent and led the troopers out into the cold.  Alan had forgotten just how cold this place was and he was quickly reminded of it as soon as he was out of the tent.

Trudging through the snow, the squad slowly made their way around the perimeter of the base.  Weapons ready and alert, they were ready for anything.  Still, sensors had not picked up anything and their walk around the camp turned up nothing as well.

Returning to their tent, Alan checked for any new messages and new orders but there were none.  Sighing, he lay down and waited for new orders to arrive.  He was glad to be back out of the cold but he was also not a person to wait.

Looking around at the rest of the squad, Alan could tell that several of them were getting fed up of waiting for new orders to arrive.  Most of the squad were either lying down or starting up a new game of cards.  Alan noticed that Vince had started to read a holo book and he wondered whether it was any good or not.

Alan hated the waiting and hoped that orders would be given soon.

Darr clicked on the comlink and spoke, voice hoarse from lack of use.

“We’ve got bats. Big bats. At least a five feet wingspan.”

Wondeful. What are the odds they're harmless herbivores? On an almost lifeless snowball like this, not very high.

At first, they didn't attack, merely circling overhead. Soem time later, their numbers had swelled and they had grown bold. One particularly large bat, with ragged black fur and a jawful of sharp teeth, landed and stared at the Raiders with a dull yellow eye. Suddenly, it leapt for Darr, who filled its mouth with crimson energy. It flopped to the ground with most of its head missing.

There was the sound of flapping wings as several of the local avians decided to take offense at the unusual white bipeds and attacked. There were shouts and two of the foul smelling creatures fell to the snowy plain, their corpses smoldering from the crimson blaster bolts.

Their outraged comrades high-pitched shrieks and calls filled the air, and more dived down from where they had been circling like buzzards.

Not good.

Dante flipped the setting on his rifle to automatic and opened fire on the ragged creatures that were swooping down to attack. Several fell, burning holes blasted into their filmed wings or hairy, small bodies, but many more took their place.

They could win through sheer numbers...

Dante gritted his teeth and resumed firing. Soon, concentrated fire brought them down and the Raiders resumed patrol, albeit slightly shaken.

As the last survivors of the arctic bats either limped into the distance or tried to crawl away, Dante saw a blur of motion and tried to click on his comlink to warn the others.

He had enough time to scream and alert the others before the creature lunged for him, claws and teeth rending the air. It crashed into his abdomen, knocking the air from his lungs and forcing him to the ground.

As it scrabbled on his chest armour, claws tearing through pouches and padding like tissue paper, it thrust its angular snout into his face, showing a mouthfull of razor-sharp teeth. Dante could see his own wide eyes in his T-visor as he tried not to choke on the creature's foul smelling breath, which was a cross between carrion and Hutt slime.

Somewhere above him, he could hear his squadmates yelling, but he knew any bolt would be just as likely to wound or kill him as the bat. Using his left hand to push the creature's deadly teeth away from his jugular, he clenched his mechanical right hand. As the creature hissed like a faulty gas main, shots from most of the squad vaporized its corpse and left it a smoldering pile of bone and skin.

As Dante got to his feet, he sealed the gaps left in his armour by the bat's claws and placed bacta on the scratches from its crawlign. Then, with the help of his vod, Dante got to his feet and retrieved his battered weapon from where the bat had knocked it.

Thankfully the rest of the patrol was far less eventful.

Dante was just beginning to wonder if his turn would ever end when he heard footsteps and voices. Quickly, the squad unclipped their weapons or pulled out vibroblades. Slowly, armoured figures became visible through the falling snow. Dante lifted his rifle, finger hovering just above the trigger, until the friend-or-foe monitor alerted him to the intentities of the beings.

The Dragoons. Wonder how their patrol went?

Before Dante could speak, Darr greeted the newcomers.

“Glad to see you’ve made it back."

Although the speakers robbbed his voice of any inflection, he was obviously pleased to see them all alive and well. Dante looked at the troopers and saw one...Mike, or Makon or something like that...carrying a angular and somewhat scorched bat head with a very toothy grin.

Guess it was good hunting after all...

“Ditto. Did you guy’s also run into those Arctic Bats?”

“Yes, and they provided excellent target practice. Barely put up a fight.”

Except for the one that almost eviscrated me.

“Well that’s good to hear. Anyways, let’s go send the other two groups out, and maybe we can talk over a cup of Hot Chocolate or something of the sort.”

Thank the Force. We finally get to relax.

Mako was a bit bothered that Leon had asked him to piece out the bat, but he was right about it slowing them down.  It was already hard to walk through such deep snow, and toting a 70lb bat corpse wasn't keeping him in the top layers very much at all.

They managed to check the other two sensors with no events, and when they got back close to base they saw the Raiders patrol coming in at the same time.

Mako was impressed with the new look of the base camp.  It was still no Calrisian Suite, but it was starting to get there.  They now had solid crates for shelter and they were capable of holding heaters.

I wonder if our bobsleds are almost ready.

There was a few odd stares at Mako's bat head when he got back.  He ignored these and ran into the barracks to show the others his find.

When Mako went inside the Dragoons barracks crate, he quickly decided that these quarters were even swankier than the ones on the Dominion, and that if it weren't for having to work, giant bats, and low-heat troopers all around, he might have preferred to stay for a while.

His squadmates were a bit aghast at the awkwardness of Mako carrying a toothy grinned bat head, but they showed much interest in looking at his catch none the less.

He showed them its jaw spread as he opened the foul mouth of the creature, and told the others that it must have weighed 70 pounds adn had a five foot wingspan.  They all looked impressed and a bit wary to go out into the cold with creatures like that out hunting.

Mako decided that he was going to decorate his armor with the frosty bat head as soon as he could dress it out.  He knew that the others would just think that he was even weirder, but Mako liked the two types of attention that it got him:

His squadmates found new ways to bond with him, and the others, who Mako was wary of anyway, decided that he may just be too off his rocker to make a good target.

He was fine with this, and so he stowed the bat head in a plastic sac under his bunk until he had time to dress it out.  He hoped that the smell wouldn't get out of the bag, because if it did his roommates might throw him out in the snow.

Mako grabbed up his mug and went to have some shitty hot chocolate with the others.

Leon and Darr sat talking animatedly about their patrols, and said nothing when Mako silently joined them as an observer.
Go ahead, laugh.  It's all fun and games until someone puts YOUR eye out.

==Before Furys Post==

Orobos ran awkwardly alongside Urakai dragging Akaan through the snow. Tanus on our tails covering us from any stray bats. They were leaving a trail where they where dragging Akaan but hopefully that would be covered back up in a couple of minutes.

Orobos holstered his axe deciding they'd go further if he used his two hands. As he stretched back to slip the axe in it's sling he noticed hundreds of deep gouges in his armour. Along his shoulder plates especially.

"How come nothing like this happened to the first patrol group?" Orobos asked as he dragged the injured Akaan.

"They must've encountered a smaller swarm," Tanus replied,

"From what they told us the bats should've gone for the ones we killed," Orobos said and then glancing over at Urakai and grinning, "It's your electrostaff I told you that thing wasn't worth the trouble it causes."

"Urakai, hey it gets the job done fast unlike your stone glued to a stick," Urakai replied,

"Well you'll fell the stone on a stick next week if your not careful," Oroos said removing his Axe and shaking it mock-threateningly at Urakai.

"Em... I don't know if you guys notice but we have an injured soldier and there are more of those bats out there,"

Urakai nodded returning his attention back to Akaan forgetting all about their argument.

"We're almost at camp anyway," Orobos said breathless, pointing at the camp, "Just about another kilometre or so."

While he's in the infirmary I can question the rest of 'em about those bats.

They reached the camp and pulling Akaan into a tent with a large Red Cross draped across the side of it. They swung him up onto a bunk and Urakai went to a cabinet while a few of the other off-duty field medics in the room went to help.

Himself and Tanus walked back into the Dark Dragoons tent. The was a few people in here. A few from Raiders chatting with Mako and Garyll.

"Where's Leon," Tanus asked as they walked in,

"He said something about Akaan and ran out," Garyll replied looking at them grinning, "What happened to you guys?"

"Thats what happened," Orobos said pointing at the bat head in the plastic bag pocking out from under the bed.

"They can't do anything, they left us alone when we killed one," Mako said matter of factly,

"Well do we have to show you Akaan," Tanus said angrily,

"What happened?" Mako and Garyll said together,

"We were attacked by a huge swarm of them and Akaan has something like blood poisoning or so Urakai says, but he's the medic," Orobos said,

"Blood poisoning?" Garyll said," That sounds completely ridiculous,"

"Do we have to show you Akaan?" Tanus asked again,

"Nevermind, lets see how he's doing," Orobos said.
Time is a Drug. Too much of it will kill you.

"Dashing through the snow... come on folks, sing along!” Riq called joyously through the comlink.

“... In a tricked out Fury sleigh,
Over the fields we go,
Blasting all the way!

The Eclipse squad leader could be quite unprofessional at times, and as he chuckled maniacally, this obviously just happened to be one of those times:

Bells on bob-tail ring,
Making spirits bright,
What fun it is to ride and sing
A sleighing song tonight!

Jingle bells, jingle bells,
Jingle all the way!
O what fun it is to ride
In a tricked out Fury sleigh!

A day or two ago,
I thought I'd take a ride,
And soon upon the
Dominion
Was asleep with garbage by my side;
The smell was big and stank;
Misfortune seemed our lot;
We then landed into a drifted bank,
And we, we got upsot.

Jingle bells, jingle bells,
Jingle all the way!
O what fun it is to ride
In a tricked out Fury sleigh!

A day or two ago,
The story I must tell
I went out on the snow
And through the snow I fell;
A creature was coming by
Back to its cozy cave,
He growled as there I sprawling lie,
But was blasted away!

Jingle bells, jingle bells,
Jingle all the way!
O what fun it is to ride
In a tricked out Fury sleigh!

Now the ground is white
Go it while you're young,
Take the squad out tonight
And sing this sleighing song;
Just get a bob-tailed bay
Two-sixty as its speed
Hop on to the Fury sleigh
And crack! You'll take the lead!

Jingle bells, jingle bells,
Jingle all the way!
O what fun it is to ride
In a tricked out Fury sleigh!

Just over the horizon Riq could see the camp set up on his HUD, distance clicking downwards in the corner, “Start slowing down folks! Don’t wanna go tumbling into the trench!”

Riq and his fireteam, in this case just Gimp, was dispersed on the first chain of sleds, Riq heading the first one, and Gimp simply standing on the last one ready to use just the breaks to help slow.  For the fireteams with a full compliment, there was a driver, a person on the back car for braking and then an extra breaker on either of the two middle sleds.

Within fifteen minutes, Riqimo was finishing his circling around the camp to slow down, Paladin Squad watching from the trenches, and Rizzit looking up from the comm relay and Riq could imagine a sigh of relief under that helmet from his commander.

OOC:
Some credit to Rizz for the first four lines of the song, and Riq gets to continue his HSC singing tradition

Lucky had been working in the trenches with Brock and Finch when she heard Doc start singing. She liked the tune , and Doc made her laugh when he sang that song. She had rarely , if ever , heard him sing.

She looked around her and saw a couple people singing. She decided to join in. She was capable of keeping a vigilant watch while having  a little fun. in her HUD she could see Doc's sled not that far away from their position.

She stopped working long enough to join in the small bit of fun. When the song ende , a heavy silence had fallen over the camp.

OOC:
Hope that was good enough. Trying to get back into the swing of things.

"Jeez.  Is he gonna be ok? I am glad that I didn't eat the bat now"

Mako looked closer at Orobos and tanus.  They had gouges all over their armor.  It looked like they had been through a  razor forest on a speederbike.

We need to stay away from the guy for now, but we will go check on him when the medics do their job.

Mako pulled the bats' head from under the bed.  He decided that he better  turn it in to the medics bay in case they needed a sample of its blood or anything.

As  he walked in he looked around and noticed the young soldier on the bed in he back, wheezing heavily and bloody bandages all over.  Mako dropped the sack onto the desk on the medics station.

"Here is one of those bats, in case you need its blood for an antidote."

THe medic's eyes opened a little wider when Mako set the bag in front of him, and then he looked at Mako a little strangely.

"I think we may need this.  I have no idea why you kept something like this, but it may have saved hat troopers life."

"Just try to keep it in one piece if you dissect it.  I need its skin and jawbone for decoration."

At this the medic looked downright awkwardly at Mako, but simply said that he would try to keep it in one piece if they could.

Mako left the tent solemnly, wondering what had happened too make those bats act that way.  The ones that his squad had encountered seemed to be after food, and when they became the hunted, rather than the hunters, the bats left and stayed at a good distance.

When Mako returned to the barracks, he noticed  Orobos and Tanus trying to patch the deeper gouges in their armor, and so he set about trying to help, Combat Engineer tools coming in handy after all on a planet with almost no resources other than water in three forms.
Go ahead, laugh.  It's all fun and games until someone puts YOUR eye out.

Wicket gathered up his Fire Team which consisted of Alater and Blackout. "Come on guys. Let's go find our sleds. They should be around here somewhere.." Wicket said as he looked around.

A few seconds later Blackout pointed to the north. "There they are."

"Ah, there they are. Good job Dax." Wicket led the way through the snow and proceeded to the sleighs. "Alrighty. Looks like there is four sleds but only three of us. Hmm. What to do...what to do..." Wicket thought out loud.

"Looks like they are tied up, Wicket." Alater replied.

"Ah, that they are. Good job noticing that. For that, you get to be the driver." Wicket grinned and hopped into one of the back sleds. "This is gunna be fun!" Wicket shouted, pretending to crack a whip at Alater. Both Alater and Dax sighed, getting into one of the remaining sleds.

Alater took the first sled in the link and begun to drive. The cold mixed with the wind which made it seem more freezing than it actually was. Wicket was not fazed by the cold air, seeing as he was having much fun riding along. Everytime the sled would turn Wicket would lean with acting as if it were some type of joy ride. Alater noticing this, decided to have a little fun as well. When he came upon the next turn, he waited till the last second and turned sharply. Wicket went flying off the sled.

"Whoa! Wicket shouted as he tumbled into the snow. The sled continued to speed off. "Hey! Don't just Leave me the hell here!" Wicket shouted as he started to run to catch up.

"Alater, stop. We have to go back and get him." Blackout said.

"Hehehe." Alater hissed. "We will do that then." He turned around and went back to pick up Wicket.

"I thought you guys were gunna leave me!" Wicket shouted angrily as he hopped in the sled with Blackout. "It's cold. Let's just get back." Wicket scrunched his eyebrows, no longer wanting to have fun. Then all of a sudden Riqimo came over the comlink.

""Dashing through the snow... come on folks, sing along!”

Doctor! Wicket smiled. As Riqimo began to sing, Wicket sung along knowing only some of the words. "mumble mumble RING! mumble mumble BRIGHT!" Wicket shouted only the words that he new were coming up. He continued to do this the whole ride back. Blackout, beginning to feel the holiday spirit, also joined in.

They made their way back to where they were headed. Once there, they could see some others bringing back sleds as well. Wicket in a better mood, leaped out of the sled and rushed over to where some of the other Eclipse members were hanging around. "Well. I guess I better get some sleep. Big day!" Wicket rushed into the room tripping in the snow once on the way.

Mako stood in the Dragoons barracks, grimly discussing the fate of their trooper Akaan with Tanus and Orobos.  Akaan was a good kid, and they all hoped that he would make it.

Urakai walked into the barracks and threw his medbag harshly on his bunk.  He had a dazed look on his face.

"Whats up Urak?"

"We made an antidote with that bats head..."

"Could you save the head?" Mako asked.

"Yeah, the head is already dressed out for you, but Akaan is dead."

The words hit the troopers like a brick.

"I thought you guys made an antidote to the poison.."

"We did.  It didn't it well with his system....or maybe his injuries were too far gone... He started spasming and violently shuddering.  He didn't make it."

The Dragoons were all silent now, thinking over the loss of their comrade.  How many more troops were going to die on this icy planet before they had a successful mission.

Akaan had been the first in DD, but there were still eight of them that had to make it off the rock alive.

"Let's hold a small service for him."

The words were brief, but respectful.  The 'Goons each held their squadmates' helmet while they spoke about their experiences with him, and each dropped a token of their friendship into the helmet to remember the man by.  The meeting was brief, and sad, and afterwards they all milled about for a while before going to find things to distract themselves from their loss.

There was now a new void in each of their hearts, with Akaan's name emblazoned within, and a spirit of revenge against this abysmal planet awoke in their hearts and burned like fire, keeping them warm and alive with thoughts of the inevitable release of their frustrations at Akaan's death upon the enemy that had uprooted them all from their warm, comfortable lives back on Tadath.

The planet continued its slow revolution through the galaxy, and the troopers of the Vast Empire continued their slow revolution on Yuka, and everything remained as it was....except for one.
Go ahead, laugh.  It's all fun and games until someone puts YOUR eye out.

Darr-Rann looked at his chronometer – Leon’s patrol was due in soon. He got up and began gathering up his equipment.

“Get ready.” He told the troopers who were currently playing cards. He had just checked the gas cylinder on his a280 when his comlink beeped – Private channel. He flicked it on.

“Hello?” He asked, holding the small device up to his ear.  Rizzit’s voice greeted him from the speaker.

“Darr, Leon’s group is on it’s way back into base. I need you to talk to him – A member of his squad was killed out on the patrol.”

“Who?” The Raiders squad leader asked. He didn’t know the current Dark Dragoons too well, but he was saddened to find out that they had lost one of their own.

“Akaan,” Rizzit replied, “Leon’s taking it pretty harshly – Blames himself for the failure.”

Darr-Rann acknowledged, and deactivated the comlink. A squad leader’s first loss of a trooper was always harsh. He turned to Vint, who had finished gathering his equipment. “Go out there and see if Leon’s arrived yet. If he has, bring him here.”

After Vint left, Darr-Rann sat back and waited, trying to think of what he was going to say.

Doc's singing could be hear faintly through the wind and snow whipping through their makeshift camp. It brought back memories of a time long ago. Of the innocent years of his youth. It brought a smile to his face.

Lucky was singing along, she seemed to know the lyrics better than Giovanni so he conformed to humming along. The cold wind stung his face as it sent little pockets of ice at him from random directions. He was never a huge fan of the cold, and knew the shortcomings of the imperial Snow trooper Armor variant, but for the time being, he was perfectly comfortable.

Everyone, for the most part, was quiet. All he could hear was the howling of the wind and the occasional flash of lightning in the distance. He enjoyed the calm before the storm, so to speak. It gave him time to think.

Luckystar now finished her song, and Doc had arrived onto the camp, and was standing next to his squad's barracks. Giovanni sent a nod over to the man, as he rubbed his hands together, desperate to get them warm.

Doc shivered a bit and nodded back a response.

Giovanni stood up and walked over to the man.

"Pretty nerve-wracking, isn't it?" he tried to start a conversation. He hadn't spoken much since they touched down on Yuka.

"The cold?" Doc looked up and wrapped his arms around himself, looking out into the whirling wind and snow.

"No...the silence. They could be anywhere. I have a hard time settling down and relaxing when i can't see or hear what's out there." He tried to peer into the swirling white wall separating them from the enemy, to no avail.

"What are we gonna do with his body?" asked Garryll.

His squadmates had different ideas.

"Send it to his parents"

"Cremation?"

"Send him up to the Dominion"

Gates sighed. "Man, Yuka sucks." The other stormtroopers nodded.

He got up. "I gotta get some fresh air."

"Watch out for those friggin' bats." Mako said, completely seriously.

Gates grabbed his DC-15, walked outside of their shelter. He watched as the base's personal moved around the base, guarding from attack, digging trenches, sleeping, patrolling. Gates slowly walked around their shelter, into a blowing wind and ice. He sighed. He really hated snow.

Walking back to the door of the shelter, he saw Leon walking past the DD bunker.

"Hey sarge! Is it cold or what?" Gates bantered tiredly.

"Yeah," said the senior non-com, distracted. "Cold, alright. Get back into the shelter before you freeze to death. Don't need another casualty."

"Copy, sarge." Gates responded, ducking back into the shelter.

He held the door open, waiting for his SL to come in. Leon kept walking. Must have to report or something. thought Gates, shrugging.

“What? What are you trying to tell me?” Leon said to the Medic, starting to get frustrated with the man’s attitude.

“Look, I need you to calm down, and listen to me.” Replied the Medic, trying to sound as polite as possible.

“Get the hell out of my way; I want to see my trooper. I don’t give a crap about protocol.” Leon shoved the Medic aside, walking into one of the many emergency rooms that ran the length of the Med Bay. He took a couple more steps, walking towards the operating table in the center of the room, and then stopped. His eyes went wide with horror when he saw the lifeless body of Akaan. Time seemed to freeze for those brief seconds.

Leon couldn’t process what he was seeing, the sight being too much for the inexperienced Squad Leader to handle. He could feel his whole body begin to tremble, as if it was a building on the verge of collapse. The two doctors looked at him, looks of remorse written all over their facea. They had seen this kind of thing happen many times before, but for Leon, it was a first. He could hear voices behind him, some of them calling his name, trying to comfort the young Squad Leader. He couldn’t hear them though.

He couldn’t hear anything.

I’ve failed, I’ve failed Akaan. I should have been a better leader.

One of the doctors walked over to Leon, holding a thin ball chain with a single Dog Tag on it. “I’m sorry, we did everything we could.”

“I know,” whispered Leon, on the verge of tears. The doctor placed the Dog Tag in Leon’s hand, gave him a pat on the shoulder, and left the Emergency Room. Soon everything was quiet, and Leon found himself in the room alone with Akaan’s lifeless body. The Squad Leader walked over to the table that Akaan was placed on, and stood over him. “You shall not be forgotten my friend.” A single tear drop rolled off Leon’s bearded chin, landing on Akaan’s face.

---- At Akaan’s funeral. ----

The eight remaining members of Dark Dragoons found themselves standing in a circle, their faces torn with grief. The blizzard winds had finally died down, and snow flakes gently fell from the sky. Each trooper stood in their full suit of armor, with their helms placed on the snow covered ground. A single man stepped forward, separating himself from the rest of the squad. He walked to the center of the circle, holding his head high, trying to set the example for the rest of his troopers.

“You already know why we’re all here.” Spoke the Squad Leader, his voice soft but loud enough for everyone to hear. “Our comrade in arms, friend, and Squad Mate has fallen into the greedy hands of death. We must pay our respects to him.” Leon grasped Akaan’s helm in both hands, wishing he could be anywhere else but here. “I’ll start first. I did not know Akaan, but from what I saw, he was a very good man. I know that if he had a choice to be back home or to be here, on this miserable little rock, with us, that he’d pick this. He was an honorable man.”

Leon then dropped one of his throwing knives into Akaan’s empty helm.

---- After the Funeral ----

“Sergeant Leon, Darr-Rann wants to talk to you. He heard about the incident. Come with me.”

Once Lucky had finished singing the fun jingle , she fell silent, like everyone else around her. She turned back towards where Gio was standing. He had been looking out into the white , windy depths of whatever was out there.

She knew like everyone else that the enemy was just beyond their safe perimiter. She crouched in the snow, drowned out the sounds of all known chatter , cocked her head sideways and listened.

She had been hoping to hear unfamiliar voices or  a set of unknown footsteps, but there was nothing. All there was for noise in her concentrated stage was the howl of the wind.

She slowly made her mind go back to her surroundings. The silence was welcoming, but it worried her at the same time. When there was silence , it meant that the loud , unwelcome noises would be coming soon.

When she saw Gio walk over to where Doc was standing , she stood up slowly , walked over to the tents and sat at the foot of the main sleeping tent that was set up for the squad.

Looking around her, she saw how exhausted everyone was. She walked over to Gio and Doc, waited for them to finish talking , then voiced a suggestion.

"I'm noticing that alot of our troopers look exhausted , may I suggest that we set up watches so that everyone gets an equal share of sleep? I'll be more than happy to take first watch with whoever else you guys want to be posted with me."

“Go out there and see if Leon’s arrived yet. If he has, bring him here.”

Vint had heard what Rizzit had said on the comlink: the group already had a loss on Yuka, and they had only there been a couple days. The unfortunate accident was bound to happen eventually on the cold, desolate planet.

Vint vocalize a response to Darr-Rann, but the words choked in his throat. He nodded instead, and exited the tent.

The cold air hit his face. Pulling his suit closer around him for warmth, he headed toward the Med Bay, where Leon would undoubtedly go when he returned to camp. Arriving at the tent, the medic informed Vint a funeral was being held by the Dark Dragoon’s for Akaan.

After a minute of searching, Vint saw the circle of squad mates, mourning their recently deceased brother-in-arms. Not wanting to intrude upon them, he stood from afar until the ceremony was over then approached Leon.

“Sergeant Leon, Darr-Rann wants to talk to you. He heard about the incident. Come with me.”

Leon nodded and followed Vint.

I wonder if I should mention Akaan at all… After all, he just lost a squad member on his first mission as a squad leader. It must be hard. But then again, he may not want to speak about it.

“I’m sorry about what happened to Akaan…”

Leon simply nodded and made a grunt of recognition. He obviously didn’t want to talk about it then.

They reached the tent and Vint opened it up.

“Darr-Rann is waiting for you inside.”

Finch heard Doc singing, grimacing at the cheer of it all. How could anyone be happy in this miserable cold? It was ridiculous. As soon as Doc finished her version, the thin corporal began to sing her own softly.

"Standing in the snow
freezing my ass off
Hoping not to catch the flu
or die from whooping cough, oh!

Yuka's hell,
Wicket smells,
Doc can barely sing.
Waiting here for orders to
Go shoot up everything..."

Humming to herself as she tried to come up with the next line, she shook the snow off her shoulders and shuffled off to find work.

OOC:
I had to get it in and only had a few minutes to do so. Sorry...

Luckystar walked up and said something about the troopers getting  exhausted. He could understand why. Not many of them had had any rest since they had touched down on this miserable hunk of ice and rock. He looked over to the good Doctor, who shrugged in his trademark way and blew into his hands to warm them up.

"Ok, if you volunteer. You'll patrol the perimeter with me. Tell everyone else to call it a night, and that's an order." Giovanni wasn't exactly well-rested, but he owed it to his troopers to give them some rest. It wouldn't be good of him to head to his makeshift cot while they  stayed up in this hellish weather. Hellish. He laughed to himself at the irony. He would never think to describe the subzero conditions as 'hellish.'

He gave Doc a weary salute and walked back to the barracks. There, Lucky was explaining the situation to the rest of the troops. Brock and Baretz wasted no time in tucking themselves in, and we're already deep in their slumber. Finch and Lunatick talked quietly in one end of the improvised shelter. The heating unit made the space seem like his apartment back on Tadath. He wanted nothing more than to strip off his heavy armor and take a nap.

Instead, he grabbed his flask from under his cot, and put on his helmet. Wrapping his cloak around himself, and strapping his gloves even tighter around his wrists, he head out with Luckystar.

His only comfort was in the fact that if they couldn't see anyone through the wind and ice, then odds are they couldn't see the two Paladins either.

At least, that's what he hoped.

Leon walked into the Raiders tent, not making any eye contact with his former squad mates. He didn’t have the courage to look them in the eye, and he felt that if he did, he’d break down in tears. He quickly made his way to the back of the tent where Darr-Rann could be seen sitting on his white sheeted mattress. The Raiders Squad Leader stood up to meet Leon, his face blank of all emotion.

“I heard about what happened. I’m sorry things had to happen that way.”

“It’s alright Darr, there’s nothing you could have done about it anyways.” Replied Leon bleakly, looking away from his former Squad Leaders eyes.

“Here let’s go outside; I want this to be a one on one thing.” The two Squad Leaders made their way back outside the tent, once again stepping into the rigid cold. Leon let out a long sigh, the air taking shape as soon as it left his lips. “How are you feeling?”

Leon was hesitant to reply, not wanting to voice his true feelings. “I’m holding up. I just wanna get my mind off of it and focus on the mission.”

“Leon, I know you’re feeling a lot more then that. I want to help you get over this; you know I’ve been through it many times myself, heh.” Replied Darr-Rann, a tinge of pain in his voice.

Leon sighed again. “It just doesn’t make any sense man. I didn’t expect for one of my troopers to be killed out on a simple patrol. And to be killed in such a horrible way… I just don’t get it! Why him? Why couldn’t it have been me? What did Akaan do to deserve such a horrible death? If it had been ME on the second shift, then none of this would have happened. But thanks to a stupid decision, one of my troopers has been killed. All because of me.” He took a breath, tears streaming down his cheeks. “I didn’t expect for it to happen like this… I didn’t think any of them would die Darr.” Finished Leon, his voice cracking.

Darr-Rann placed a light hand on Leon’s shoulder, turning the young Squad Leader around to face him. “Leon, you can’t be so hard on yourself. What happened happened, and there’s nothing you can do to change that. You’re one of the greatest, good hearted people I have ever known, Leon. I know you would do anything in your power to get him back, but sometimes… Sometimes there’s gonna be things you can’t control, situations you can’t overcome. It’s one of the many things you need to cope with as a Leader, and it’s something all of us need to deal with.”

He paused, taking a few seconds to catch his breath.

“You know what separates the best leaders from the average, Leon?”

Leon shook his head.

“The best are the ones who move on, the ones who adapt. And the average are the ones who live in the past, the ones that bash themselves over and over again for certain things they couldn’t control. I don’t want you to be one of those average leaders, because I know you’re better then that. I know it sounds hard, but you just need to move on, forget about it for the time being and learn from your mistakes. This isn’t the time for remorse.”

Leon wiped his face, and met his former Squad Leader eye to eye. “Thanks Darr-Rann. It’s just gonna take some time…”

“I know it will, but don’t let it haunt you. Move on, it’s over.”

Yuka, Northern continent
5:16:11 Mission Clock
18:18:30 local time

Dante sat back, most of his armour on the bunk in several pieces, and stretched. He lifted his head and left a blast of heated air brush past his face, pulling his hair this way and that. Dante slowly slid back onto the bunk and yawned.

On a miserable little ball of ice like this, a heated tent is the height of luxury.

Dante reached for a ration pack from a little pile he had stacked on a table and recoiled as a twinge of pain made its way through his arm. Dante frowned, examining his arm. He peeled off a bacta patch and cursed under his breath. One of the scratches from the melee he had been through earlier seemed to be inflamed and was throbbing. Dante looked at it and sighed. As soon as he had returned, he had seen a medic, who had cleaned the wound and assured Dante there shouldn't be any complications.

I hope he was right.

Dante stood up, ignoring the pain, and started to suit up again.

Leon's group will be back soon and we'll be thrown back into the cold to fend off those blasted bats.

As if to confirm his suspicions, Darr glanced at his chronometer and spoke.

"Get ready."

With a sigh, Dante started to suit up, retrieving his left leg armour from the bunk's corner and sliding it on. The rest of the padded suit went on quickly enough, until all that was left was the helmet. Dante picked it up, the black viewscreens glinting in the light, and tucked it under his elbow.

There was a loud ringing, and Darr held his comlink up to his ear. Without warning, his mouth tightened into a thin, grim line and his face dissolved into an expression of shock.

As Darr clicked the comlink off, he turned to the squad members that were still in the cabin. Dante felt something cold slide into his stomach and he had a sudden premonition of what he was about to say.

"Leon's group just returned."

From your little chat, I gather something went wrong. Let it be anything but a death, please not a death already...

"They lost one of their troopers: Akaan."

A death. We've lost a man and the mission hasn't even begun yet. Leon must be going through hell right now.

Darr turned to Yush.

“Go out there and see if Leon’s arrived yet. If he has, bring him here.”

As the sound of Yish's footsteps grew faint and died from distance and the snow, Dante sat absorbed in his own thoughts, helmet forgotten.

One fatality and we haven't started yet. Does the High Command care or even know about Akaan's death? More to the point, how many others will have to give their lives to liberate this planet?

"Screw this Bob, let's get the hell out of here."

Some of the squads had begun running their sleds in preparation for advancing on their infiltration routes. Tuloi and his gang had the base camp running smoothly. The planetary weather was appropriately crappy everywhere, but worse places other than here.

A couple of long range probots had hit on some concentrations of housing. It was still hard to see whether this planet was a quick outpost for anti-Imperial malcontents or an ongoing planetary settlement. If the latter, hopefully they were planning on some Coruforming or something. He'd hate to grow up here, much less see what kind of bitter, angry people growing up here would create.

Then again, that might be a key to the puzzle of these new enemies.

In any event, seeing as it was still unclear whether there was a local populace - and what part it had in the war effort - Fury decided to grab Bob and find these things out. The nearest thing resembling a town was forty klicks away and over a mountain, so they loaded up their "acquired" troop transport, basically an oversized cart, and headed out. With small group missions being the order of the day, it did not seem like he'd be needed any time soon.

Mako sat in the barracks with the rest of the 'Goons, waiting for Leon to come back.  The man was taking the death of his trooper well for such a new SL.  Mako grew frustrated with waiting on the man to come back, ad decded to go out and find him.

Mako searched the likely places around camp, the Raiders barracks, the solitary pathways around between the shelters, but he found the man at the place where they had held the funeral service.  Mako though that this was odd, considering the soldiers ody was not even in this ground, rather it was awaiting transport back up to the Dominion for its final journey home.

"You ok?"

"Yeah," Leon said.  "You?"

"He was a good trooper."

"I kind of feel like I let him down.  I am afraid that I will let someone else down too.  It was so sudden...so soon.  I feel like I was just getting t know him."

"Leon....We live together, eat together, play together, and bleed together.  When we sign on to the VE we know, we hope it never comes, but we know that there will be death.  Akaan was a good soldier, and a good friend, but he died protecting what he loved.  The best thing that we can do is make sure that his death is not in vain."

"Yeah...You are right...but I feel...I still feel responsible.  Like it should have been me."

"We are lucky that it wasn't you, Leon.  The rest of the squad needs you.  We look to you for guidance, support and leadership.  Without a solid Squad leader, we are unorganized, disagreeable.  We don't function well.  Sure Tanus would step up, but it would be hard to handle a squad that had been robbed of the leadership that you have brought to us.  We need you, and we owe this planet some hell."

"Yeah..We..."

"Yes.  We owe it to Akaan to finish this job, and we need you to lead us there.  Let's go in and smoke some cigarettes."

Leon stood and followed Mako into the Dragoons' barracks.  Orobos pulled the rest of his bottle from his locker, and they each took turns toasting Akaan and taking shots in his memory.

The scene was slowly turning from dampened moods to invigorated spirits at keeping Akaan's memory alive and finishing the job that they all came to do.
Go ahead, laugh.  It's all fun and games until someone puts YOUR eye out.

"Alright Lucky, this was your idea, you take up point" Giovanni said over the helmet's COM link. He hoped Lucky understood the humor in his statement and let her catch up with him on their short walk out of the camp. He used this time to check his weapon and ensure it was working properly. Non-functioning mechanisms were a huge problem when you dealt with extremes in temperature, and the last thing Giovanni wanted was a jammed rifle when he needed it the most.

"Alright, on your 6." It was common for a squad mate to report their position at all time before movement when visibility was low. It was attention to these kinds of details that saved lives. He was glad his assistant squad leader had the foresight to remember that. He sure as hell hadn't.

"Roger that." He got up from his kneeling position and kept his rifle resting peacefully across his torso.

"Ok, Let's go" Lucky said. He had hardly noticed her slip by him in the midst of all the snow.

They patrolled the perimeter and saw nothing unusual. Every once in a while Giovanni thought he would see something, but it was easy to let one's mind get the best of him when there was nothing but swirling white as far as the eye could see.

They returned to the camp, chilled to the bone, and Lucky went straight for the barracks. Giovanni, however, made a beeline for the eclipse barracks to talk the plans over with his Platoon commander.

Out of the snow and on the sleds it was a better comparision then having to walk and wonder if one would slip into a white mound and fall to a snowy death.  As it was the orders were simple. Drive around and look for something.

Well.. short terms.. thats what the breifing was.. why can't they be that plain.. always have to draw out a long map..

Saphira thought to herself, shifting uncomfertably. Somehow she had ended up with WIcket, Dax and Alater. Hell the Twi'lik had thought at least they would be in their Fire Teams.

Alater ended up being the driver for their sled. His hands on the driving gears he looked ahead, but could feel the anger seeping of the female near him.

I bet you she is upset that she's not driving.. He thought to himself. Saphira shifted again and leanded her head foward to look at him threw their masks.

"You're driving too slow.." She rasped, answerign his mental statement. The lizard gave a low rumble. Saph didn't know  if it was a growl or his version of amusement.

"Your just thinking to hard.." He replied back with a grumble. it was bad enough they were only here for a couple days already. For him it was even more so that he hated the cold and needed to stay warm. Already his mood was going for the worse. Many people were with the cold and the white blanket settings.

"Move over.." Saph replied with a growl and pushed at Alater.

"Why?" He stayed where he was at. Dax and wicket, sitting behind them only turned, looked at each other and waited for the fight to break  out.

"I'm the VC lizard breath.. Now move.." She hissed at him. When he didn't budge, the female reached over and pressed a switch on the sled. The engine soon died.

"What the hell did you do?!" Alater growled. Saph only smiled from behind her mask.

"You know.. it's cute watching you two argue.. but alater.. let her drive before we become permant residents.." Dax spoke up threw the link. Both pairs looked back at him and you could feel the tension in the air. Saph leaned over the sled and scooped up a fist of snow that accumalated on the side and threw it at him in the face. A few seconds went by of silent beofre everyone on board busted out laughing.

Rizzit lay in his semi-warm cot drinking some of the hot chocolate that was smuggled along for the mission. Rizzit thanked the stars for that, otherwise this mission would be even more unbearable than it already was. Rizzit was on his datapad sending the sled assignments to the squads so there would be no confusion for the morning when they took off. Rizzit got on the comlink and set it to their own private channel. He didn't want to risk being detected....if the enemy was going to be paranoid, they would be too.

"All squads come in. This is Rizzit and I need your attention. Horsies, Dragoons, Crazies, Palies, and Mooners...I need your attention."

"You forget one Rizz!" Arnaut chimed in.

"Arny? Seriously....where are you? You alive?"

"Luckily yes. We're barely making it but yes, we're alive. The dominion was able to give us your coordinates so we're actually here at base now. Well, approaching it."

"So what exactly have you been doing?"

"Well, we got in a bit of a spot we had landed a ways off from you then we fell into some kinda trap set by locals here."

"Locals? People actually live here?"

"We're not really sure, we didn't mee them see. We escaped, but when we got out of the trap we all had these circles around us made of pines. It was almost like a neck-brace for armor."

"Wreaths?" asked Riqimo.

"I dunno....they just had some bows on the front of them."

"Yeah....wreaths...." Rizzit said with the same kind of odd laughter going through his head as when he watched Fury playing around in the snow. "There is worse you can do ya know....Fury dove off the shuttle ramp into the snow."

"So now that you guys are here get settled into a tent and listen to something that you'll probably never listen to again after this mission. For the first time you're going to be briefed over the comlinks due to the fact that there isn't room enough in any of our tents to fit you all in. What's even more odd though is im going to brief you in leisure from my cot that doesn't really keep me warm....but hey it's better than nothing....AND I'm gonna be drinking this delicious hot chocolate. Thank you by the way to whoever's brilliant idea it was to bring it along."

There was a bit of odd remarks being made but Rizzit couldn't make them out. He also wasn't sure if they were regaurding him or the mental picture of the Wraiths' squad wearing Wreaths. Rizzit was actually considering calling them the Wreaths squad.

"Okay so I'm sure by now you've all had a chance to look over the sleds and realize that there's only room for 6 per sled. I did have the teams planned out but seeing as how the Wreaths...err.....Wraiths just showed up I'll re-work the teams and send them out via datapad. There will be eight sleds used alltogether and a few of your sleds will have a Wraiths member on the sled. Sorry Wraiths, I know you had nothing to do with it: but you DID come last minute. All of you though I am going to ask that you don't complain about assignments in the sled. They're only to travel in and then you'll be back with your squads."

Rizzit listened as he sipped his hot chocolate for grumbling from Wraiths or anyone, but no one seemed to complain. Rizzit took this as he had their attention so he decided to continue.

"So Eclipse and Paladin are going to head east of the base about 55 kilometers. There's a canyon there. Paladin....you're going to do what you do best and take out anything of consequence there like maybe a Jamming Device or some turrets. Eclipse....I want you to do a bit of recon and look for neutral or enemy forces. If there's anything that you spot that requires immediate attention....tag it for Paladin to get."

Rizzit took another sip from his mug, Rizzit could already hear plans being made. At the present, he really didn't care too much. He was glad they were going along with him.

"Dark Dragoons you'll be pairing up with the Raiders. Intelligence reports that a probe spotted some sort of mine in the mountains. Dragoons...im counting on you to check it out and if need be try to shut it down for some leverage. Raiders....you're going to be going along with them. Oh...and one other thing: I'm coming with you!"

Rizzit heard some expressions of shock. Some were groaning, some were happy, others still were silent. Whenever the Company Commander accompanied you on a mission it was an honor but it also caused a lot of tension. Luckily for this group, Rizzit was not your typical Company Commander.

"That leaves the remaining Wrea--Wraiths and the Horsies. So I'm sending you out west to do some recon over there....all of you. If there's anything over there that needs taking out between 12 people I think you can do it! Okay....that's it guys let's get a good rest....starting tomorrow we probably won't get it again."

Rizzit turned off his comlink and took out his datapad. He began playing with names until they all seemed to fit. There was one squad all Wraiths....Rizzit had his doubts that he would be sending them to their deaths. The sled they were traveling in was the one that failed the original inspection on the dominon....it DID get passed though, maybe Rizzit was worrying over nothing.

OOC: For those wondering there is a sled 8 created for the awolees from Wraiths/DD. We'll make sure that they get Death with Honor so to say For those wanting to see your sled assignment please visit the discussion thread.

BEFORE RIZZAL's POST

"Hey Doc" Giovanni said, taking off his gloves now that he was in the relative comfort of a heated room. He didn't need the bulky equipment that was necessary for keeping his fingers intact in the bitter cold.

Riqimo was seated at an improvised desk, made of a small cargo crate and an even smaller one as a chair. He was busy reading a book but he looked up to welcome his Adjutant.

"Just got back from sweeping the perimeter with Lucky and i had a question. I know some of my troops are a bit anxious to get out and engage the enemy."

Riqimo nodded understandingly but didn't take an eye off of the book he was reading. It was old, and looked like it had seen better days. The spine was bent crudely in many places.

"It's been two days since you and the rest of the gang brought back the sleds. When are we going to mount our attack?" It wasn't usual for Giovanni to lose his cool, but waiting around a camp in the freezing cold was not his idea of a good time. He needed action. He needed to shot something between the eyes.

Doc was deep in thought for a moment, and after a while, rapidly flipped through the musty pages of his book and pointed at a paragraph. He looked up and read aloud:

"The two most powerful warriors are patience and time."

Like a true bookworm, he looked at Gio, waited for the line to sink in, and then descended once again into his reading.

"You know, you could just give me a date or something" Giovanni stood scratching his head. He liked being cryptic too, but his feet were numb and his throat was becoming hoarse. He wanted off of this crappy planet and the only way to do that was to complete the mission. The sooner they met their objective, the sooner he and his men and women would be on an express shuttle back to Tadath.

"He that can have patience, can have what he wants" Doc said, raising his finger in the air as if declaring an edict.

Giovanni sighed. "Alright, doc. See you bright and early tomorrow."

Giovanni dragged his feet back to the barracks, where LunaTick and Viper were reading themselves to go on patrol.

Alan had been waiting for the orders to come through and he was glad that the waiting was finally at an end.  He listened intently to Rizzit’s speech.  When Rizzit informed everyone that he was lying in his bunk drinking a hot cup of chocolate Alan swore inwardly to himself and thought that lucky son of a bitch.  Alan was also wondering where he had gotten such a luxury and whether he could pilfer the stores and get one himself before the mission began.

Alan’s attention returned to the mission when Rizzit started informing everyone what each squad’s assignment was going to be.  He wondered what, if anything was going to out west.  He didn’t like going into a situation unprepared but how could you prepare for something you knew nothing about.  He was sure that the Iron Horse squad along with the Wraiths could tackle anything.

His datapad beeped and he looked down to see what the sled assignment was going to be.  He was surprised and relieved at the same time when he noted that the Iron Horse squad was to have a sled their own.  He had been looking forward to driving one and now it was actually going to happen.

“All right people” said Alan, “you heard Rizzit, let’s get ready and get this show on the road”.

“Yes Sir” replied the squad as they started to gear up.

“Ken, you can assist me with driving the sled, the rest of you man the guns”.

Ken and the rest of the squad nodded in understanding.

Donning his snowtrooper helmet, Alan led the squad to a nearby sled and the squad started to file onto it.  Looking down at the controls Alan started to think to himself now how do I work this thing again.  Pressing a few buttons, the engines hummed to life and the mission began.

Snipes burst into Gio's tent as soon as he had the shuttle set down. Snipes had been gone for months, and since he'd be sharing a sled with Gio he thought he should pay his friend a visit.

Snipes had been attempting to make a dramatic entrance, however snowtrooper armor prevented a person from ever looking smooth, it was worsened by the wreath around his neck. Worsened to the point that Snipes had to clap a snow covered glove over Gios mouth untill his friend nearly passed out.

Once his laughter died down Snipes pulled over a chair, the Pallies were mostly sleeping, those that weren't he didn't recognize. He pulled his helmet off (leaving the wreath in place) and set it on his knee. It was almost warm.

"Any particular reason you stopped by?"

"No, not really."

"Sounds like normal."

The two talked for a little while about various things, they had a bit of history, Gio had spent some time in Wraith and had been in DD when Snipes had been in RAIDERS and therefor they had once shared a mutual rivalry.

Finally though the time caught up with them and Snipes decided to leave, let Gio get some rest before the mission in the morning. All the squads that had missions the next day were taking four hours before hand to get some additional rest, the cold sapped the energy from even the hardiest of troopers. Snipes replaced his helmet, bid a good night and then wandered into the snow and the cold to find something warm to eat and, if all went well, someone to keep him warm.

The cold air hissed around him, and the strong winds forced him to keep his head down. The filtering properties of his visor were helpful, but still not up to the task of all the snow, it was only because of the way point system in his HUD that he was able to navigate the camp with any certainty. A thermal imaging overlay helped him identify people and equipment through the haze and a few tricks picked up over his many years in the army helped him avoid anyone that might try and send him somewhere he didn't want to be.

The hot meal wasn't hard to come by, he swiped it from Rizzit's tent as he dozed, then he was later able to swipe some MRE's (Meals-Ready to - Eat) from a supply tent for the rest of his squad. They weren't generic protein-crackers like the ration packs, some hot water and a chance to cook was all that was required for real meals.

Leo Tolstoy, nice

Come morning, the night coolness started to drift away with the rising sun, about a ten degree Celsius rise in temperature actually.  Not that it helped much, it was still cold enough to freeze alcohol before it reached your liver.  Although Riq was sure that Snipes found a way to manage it anyways, but that’s an isolated incident.

Eclipse was perhaps one of the first squads to awaken, Riq wasn’t sure as he was surrounded by insulation layered walls, or what passed for insulation around here.  After awakening the rest of the Eclipse folks gently, namely Wicket, Riq slipped into his snowtrooper leggings again, still warm from the tiny heater until he managed to... “liberate” from a small stack heading for the command tents two days ago.  It probably wasn’t sorely missed, they had 9 others after all.

Although Eclipse may not have been the first out, they were definitely the first suited and out in the trampled snow of the base, and shivering in the crisp air.  There wasn’t much of a watch the previous night when an ice storm swept over.  Apparently there were some miscalculations in the weather seeding and the glassed over look of the base reflected the rising glare harshly into the polarized lens of Riq’s helmet.

Beautiful and deadly, how... typical. Riq shrugged and wandered off towards one of the sleds and sighed as he dislodged a scrapper from the iced floor of the front.  Rizz mentioned something about sleds today, and Riq had best get the sleds that he would be using in an acceptable state, and that started with the removal of the layer of ice that had hardened overnight, Alater himself did the same, only with his claws bared from the snowtrooper suit carving the ice off in shavings that Wicket started to collect for some sort of desert.

When the sleds had been almost cleared of the crystalline water, Brigadier General Rizzit had come onto the comm and rubbed his semi comfort into the other troopers.  Riq stretched his fingers to get enough blood flowing through them to generate enough heat to pull the datapad out of an air tight pouch and look at the orders for the squad.  Fifty five kilometers, about two hours away at a steady, safe pace, was their target, a winding canyon in the mountains, paired with two Wraiths and Paladin Squad.”

What did he do to deserve it?

Nothing. He was the unlucky one, that's all.

Dante searched his memories for the Dragoon and came up with a blurry scene from several days ago. From the corner of his eye, he had seen the tall, laughing trooper surrounded by a group of his friends. He had seemed content and at peace, with no knowledge of what would happen to him.

And why should he? Death probably seemed a remote prospect to him, like it once did to me. That part of me died on Garg II.

The wind howled like a trapped beast, then died down. Mockingly, the snow also stopped at the same time and rays of sun poked through the cloud cover.

Dante stood and left the barracks. On the edge of the camp, near the AA guns, the Dragoons were giving a service for their fallen comrade. As Dante watched, a Dragoon gently placed Akaan's helmet in a hollow they had dug in the ice. Dante imagined how much effort it must have taken them to break the ice and shivered, but not from the cold.

Dante heard noises coming from behind him and dropped his weapon in shock. A group of people had gathered in the middle of the base and were singing. He looked closer and saw several members of the HC joining in.

Dante spat on the ground in disgust and shook his head.

So much for the commanders. Couldn't they at least wait for the funeral to end?

The Dragoons had finished their service and were filing away. Thankfully, for whatever reason, the singers had stopped. As Dante watched, Leon walked past him, eyes red and fists clenched. Dante spoke. He knew it wasn't much but it was all he could do.

"Leon..."

The Dragoon Squad leader turned.

"I'm sorry about Akaan."

Leon slowly nodded, then made a beeline for the Raiders tent. Dante stood there, looking at the mound where Akaan's helmet lay buried and wondered.

Did Akaan die in vain? If he did, how many more will the cause he was martyred consume?

The only answer Dante received was the moaning of the wind, which buffeted the tents and sent loose items flying everywhere.
