Most definitly Mozart, and Beethoven, Bach, and Tchaikovsky.
Of the modern composers, it would be Hans Zimmer.
I love the Nutcracker, Giselle, the latter of which I was fortunate enough to see live, performed by St. Petersburg's ballet group.  And I can go on forever, if I don't stop now,
I grew up with only classical music till the age of 14,

Bach.

Richard Wagner wasn't bad either. "Valkyries" and all that jazz.

Umm... Mozart and Beethoven are the only "Classical" Composers so far. Bach is Baroque, and Tchaikovsky is Romantic I think... Don't think he is 20th century. I wouldn't consider John Williams as a classical Composer. Wagner was...Can't remember at this moment. Too tired. Anyways, just being picky. Oh, and if I had to choose a favorite composer, it would have to be either Chopin or Rachmaninoff. (Yeah.. think I misspelled that, but too tired to fix that as well.)

I love Bach.

I know it doesn't fall into the category, but whoever wrote Brighton Beach deserves to be famous as if he isn't already. That was the most fun I have had playing a song ever.

Currently- I absolutely love Beethoven's work: he's absolutely phenomenal.  Watch 'Copying Beethoven' if you can- gives you a good understanding of how he saw his music and how incredibly gifted he was- in both this film and 'Amadeus,' it shows the composers dictating directly from their minds as opposed to working it out on paper   The second movement of Beethoven's 7th Symphony is simply haunting, as is his Moonlight Sonata.  His 5th is probably best known to the every day person, but it really is rockin   Of course, his final, the 9th (Ode To Joy) is something all it's own, but I also like some of his softer work: Pathetique is just drenched in emotion.

Mozart- I have a new respect for him.  The 'Lacrimoso' movement of his 'Requiem Mass' is chilling: I love it.  I love minor keys, especially when they're made better by people who usually write in major.

Then you have your awe-inspiring music, like O Fortuna.  Perhaps this opposite is even better- the wonderous works of Claude Debussy are still rocking may face off.  Claire De Lune- absolutely amazing piece of work.  Pacabel's "Canon" is great, but so is Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsody.  I know Gershwin is post-impressionist, but his Rhapsody in Blue is awesome as well.  But my favorite piece of music?  That's a toughy...  I'll tell you when I get through the 8 CDs of classical music I just bought.  Got Segovia for free, so maybe I'll have some new guitar music to ramble over.  Happy to see some enthusiasm pick up over classical music just as I start studying it, lol.  Keep rockin, folks.

Comparing John Williams to Beethoven is like comparing an atom to the sun... there's no comparison. Beethoven was quite original - everything in a piece was unique. Williams cut corners. Yes, his music is nice, but it's "background music" in the movies. I mean, come on - he added/removed one note from the original E.T. score to make the Star Wars theme song :P Smart, but he was just too lazy to create an entire new production.

Wagner was awesome. I like most of his pieces, but he's always lost a few knotches in my book because of his antisemitism.

Definately, Beethoven's 5th will always be remembered, but I think his 3rd was very well done as well.

I do have to say, however, that the song I've listened to the most is Massenet's Meditation from Thais. That's an awesome piece.

Make that twelve CDs- there were six in each of the packs.  The Segovia CD isn't as impressive as I thought it would be: no doubt his technique is amazing though.  I'm only on the first of the two CDs though- maybe the music itself will become a bit better.

In my book, it's a tie between Stravinsky and Wagner. Because come on, have you heard that solo in the beginning of the Rite of Spring? People think it's an oboe, but it isn't; it's a bassoon. To quote Camille Saint-Saens "God did not intend for the bassoon to play that high," or something to that effect.

And don't get me started about Wagner.

Baroque is my favourite of the "classical" periods.  In particular I love Bach, Vivaldi, Handel.  Mozart and Beethoven are the great masters of course.  Cos, I noticed your love of the 3rd symphony.  I guess I throw in for consideration Beethoven's 9th symphony.  To me, that is one of the greatest pieces of music ever written and what is amazing is that he was nearly deaf, if not entirely deaf by the end, when he wrote it.  In the romantic period my favourites are Mendelssohn, Chopin, Tchaikovsky, and Brahms.  The Baroque era is still my favourite though.  I think part of the reason is the fact that I love the harpsichord.

Cos, I have the seem thoughts as you on Wagner.  In many ways a musical genius, but his ideology and Antisemitism discredits him in my mind.

I like Wagner's work as well, though I didn't know about his...views. *sigh* Still, Valkyries is great.

Handel is good too. I've had to play an Honor and Arms solo by him in the past, and it was fun to play.

My favourite is definetly either Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture,Beethoven's 5th and 9th Symphoniies,Shostakovich'es Jazz suites and Vaughan Williams' Variations on English Folk Tunes..I also love the Anvil chorus and the Slaves Song by Verdi.Bizet's Carmen and Farandole. They are dfinitley the best for me.

(**Im gonna get hate mail for this**):I hate Baroque.Well not hate, more find it boring.I think it all is too samey-samey.I find It just repeats itself over and over again.

P.Sid you know that Handels Allelujah and its Oratario was first performed here in Dublin,Ireland.

Yeah, I'm necroing this post again...

Would like to add Antonin Dvo?ák to the list. I know, he's romantic not classic. But the term can be stretched to "everything that is not popular music" I suppose.
I love Dvo?áks "From the new world", check it out.

Great flippin stuff, I'll tell ya what   Brahms's piano compositions are really, really good as well, actually.  Better than the symphonies I've encountered by him, at least.

Liszt for me, Leibestraum No.3 being my favorite.

Mendelssohn and Brahms are also good. I tend to enjoy the Romantic era more than Classical and Baroque.  It's just the way I am.

As for modern, Stravinsky is really nice sometimes.

Wagner takes my classical cake, probably because of the sequence in Apocalypse Now where 1st of the 9th AirCav attacks that Vietnamese village to the Ride.
