The Hammerhead-class cruiser was a type of warship used by the Republic Navy during the Old Sith Wars,[4] the Mandalorian Wars,[6] and the New Sith Wars.[5]
Characteristics
Hammerhead-class capital ships at the Battle of Vanquo.
This ship was a cruiser and a successor-design to the smaller
Praetorian-class frigate.[1] Serving on the line in fleet engagements as a courier and as a command ship of large fleets, it was a workhorse of the Republic and a common sight near Republic-controlled worlds. This ship could also undertake independent operations, unlike the Republic blockade runner, which was never observed outside a supporting fleet. Hammerheads were able to enter atmospheres and land on planetary surfaces.[4]
The spaceframe resembled the later Consular-class space cruiser and the CR90 corvette, though this may have been coincidental. They also bore a large resemblance to the EF76 Nebulon-B escort frigate of the Galactic Civil War era, due to the vertically elongated bridge.[4]
Though their exact armament was unknown, by 3,956 BBY they appeared to possess at least seven turbolasers, with three batteries of two and a single turbolaser cannon mounted atop the hammerhead bridge structure all facing forward, as well as an unknown number of quad-lasers pointing aft. As demonstrated by the Endar Spire and the Harbinger some years later, they also appeared to have a number of lighter, point-defense laser cannons for use against small craft mounted at various points along the hull.[4]
They were propelled by four ion engines emitting particles in the orange section of the visible spectrum during the wars around 3,956 BBY, but this changed over time, earlier ships having three engines that emmitted blue particles. This may have indicated a continuous upgrade program was in place for these vessels over the years, or perhaps these two vessels were variant designs.
History
- OOC:
A fleet of Hammerheads.
Hammerheads were first seen in service in the Great Sith War, where they participated in the First Battle of Empress Teta.[7] During the restoration period after the war, it was mass-produced at such a scale that Rendili Hyperworks would finish a new cruiser every ten days for several years.[1]
During the Mandalorian Wars thirty years later, they remained in frontline service, sometimes alongside an
Inexpugnable-class command ship, itself a class made to sell more
Hammerheads.[2] With a third of the Republic's fleet crushed at Malachor V during the Wars,[8] and another third, including bigger
Interdictor-class cruiser, taken by Revan to form the basis of his Sith Empire's forces,[4] the ailing Republic government turned to these smaller capital ships to halt the Sith advance.[4]
During the New Sith Wars, they remained in service. During that war, they each held a squadron of Aurek fighters and had undergone radical upgrades and design revisions since their debut thousands of years before.[5] Much like the
Invincible-class dreadnaught, the
Hammerhead-class cruiser was one of the longest serving classes of ship in any military, with versions of it being maintained in active service for at least 3,000 years.[9]

- Light Cruiser or Fast Frigate would be its' modern usage, and a cheaper alternative to the Strike and Longhorn class cruisers
Btw, we really should add Strike-class Medium Cruisers.
The
Strike-class medium cruiser was a medium star cruiser designed by the Loronar Corporation during the Galactic Civil War for the Imperial Navy as a general-purpose vessel capable of modular modifications to allow it to fit many mission profiles, yet cheap enough to be produced in large quantities.
Description
While a frigate in size, the 450-meter long
Strike-class was capable of challenging larger Alliance cruisers with its surprisingly heavy load of firepower, strong shields, and high sublight speed.
The Order of Battle considered two
Strike-class cruisers the equivalent of one Victory-class Star Destroyer.
In addition, the interior storage space of the
Strike-class could be modified for different missions. The most common sets were designed for planetary garrison, space superiority, and planetary assault. Planetary garrison loadouts included an assault company, two AT-STs, one AT-AT, and several support speeders; space superiority included up to three squadrons of TIEs; the planetary assault loadout included five AT-AT. However, the internal storage spaces and skeletal structure proved weak against enemy fire once the shields were down.
History

Profile of a
Strike-class medium cruiser
A departure from the Navy's trend towards increasingly large warships, the
Strike-class cruiser was an admission to diminished ability to defend space superiority against the Rebel Alliance and other forces as the conflict wore on.
During the campaign against rogue TIE Defender technology in the Eva-T system, the Strike Cruiser was used by four factions; loyalist Imperials commanded by Thrawn, the traitor Zaarin, the Rneekii, and the Nami.
Ironically, the one big disadvantage of the
Strike-class cruiser was a side effect of its biggest advantage. Due to the modular design of the ship, a single, well-placed hit could shut down entire systems or weapon batteries if the densely arrayed power connectors between two sections of the ship were damaged. If the ship suffered too many critical hits by large-impact weapons (such as proton torpedoes or heavy turbolasers) it was also possible that it might simply break apart, losing large portions of its structure. By the time the ship was introduced into full naval service this was only considered to be a minor flaw, as the Empire had enough resources to replenish damaged or lost components that were considered "disposable" at that time.

Imperial-class Star Destroyer (1,600m).
However, as the war raged on and large starships started to become a rare sight, the Imperial Remnant felt the need to make this otherwise reliable, versatile and thus tactically important class of cruisers more durable, which resulted in reinforcing the connections between the cruiser's basic integral structure and the attached modules in order to prevent easy decouplings. Nevertheless, these spots remained the most vulnerable parts of the Strike-class, and pilots and commanders on both sides of the Galactic Civil War adapted their tactics to deal with this knowledge.
At least one
Strike-class cruiser, Peregrine, was modified by the Rebel Alliance with two large, bulbous housings for gravity well projectors, which were removed from a captured Imperial Interdictor cruiser. This ship was designated by the Rebels as a modified strike cruiser.
The
Strike-class cruiser was also redesigned to produce the
Eidolon for Sate Pestage, but this prototype never went into full production.

Eidolon was a redesigned
Strike-class cruiser.
Characteristics
It boasted upgraded TIE launch racks that were able to launch several TIE/ln starfighters in a very short time.
History

Secretly manufactured by Kuat Drive Yards in the Seswenna Sector, the
Eidolon disappeared on its maiden flight. Unbeknownst to the galaxy at large, the ship was nothing more than a ruse by Sate Pestage to hide his accumulated wealth on Tatooine. Although the cruiser never went into full production, the hull and launch rack of the prototype was made and retrofitted into Eidolon Base.
