GDC 07: Project Epoc brings mind control to games
Emotiv Systems introduces new helmet that could allow gamers to leave behind joysticks and buttons in favor of thoughts and emotions.
By Candace Lombardi, News.com
Posted Mar 7, 2007 11:22 am PT
Emotiv Systems today unveiled a brain/computer interface system with a helmet and software applications at the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco. The Project Epoc system can move objects based on a gamer's thoughts, reflect facial expressions, and respond to the excitement or calm the gamer mentally exerts, the company said.
Sensors in the helmet pick up on electric signals in the brain. The system software analyzes the signals emitted by the brain and then wirelessly relays what it detects to a receiver. The receiver is plugged into the USB port of a game console or PC, according to Randy Breen, Emotiv's chief product officer.
As with handwriting or voice recognition, the machine itself has a learning curve, improving as it better understands what the player is thinking, but there is also a skill level involving visualization on the part of the gamer.
Anecdotally, the system seems to work best with children and others open to believing in their capability, according to Breen. It seems that gamers who believe in their ability to manipulate the virtual world with their brain--the kind of people who are skilled at using their imagination, in other words--are better at using the device.
"The detection works best when you think about that action in a particular way, repeating that thought pattern," Breen said.
"We have had a number of kids try the equipment, and they often get the best results right away," Breen said. "Part of that is because the kid doesn't have the same kind of barriers as an adult does. Lots of kids can fantasize about moving a cup and believe it."
Adults, on the other hand, are more definitive in their thinking and thus have a barrier to believing that they can do something out of the ordinary, Breen said.
While almost anyone can do at least one action with the device, Breen said some adults require practice to master up to three simultaneous actions.
The helmet shown at the show is only a prototype to demonstrate to game developers what can be done with the technology. While Emotiv is not yet ready to announce any partnerships, Breen did say the product will be coming to market in 2008.
In conjunction with Project Epoc's debut, the company launched a kit for game developers Wednesday. Emotiv also announced that it is developing its technology for use in other industries, including medicine, security, market research, and interactive television.
Emotiv, which was founded in 2003, has offices both in Sydney, Australia, and San Francisco. The company counts among its investors the Australian government. One of its four cofounders is Allan Snyder, director of The Centre for the Mind, a joint venture of the Australian National University and the University of Sydney. Steven Duvall, the director of technology for Intel Capital's International Sector, serves as an adviser to the company.

I am just thinking, If it picks up on what the user is thinking, wouldn't they have to only be thinking about actions in the game. If we think about somehting else while playing the game, like let's say we think about... some other action that we don't want to do, or about doing something we need to do. wouldn't it happen in the game. If you know what I mean?
Let's say you think about jumping, and you want to walk, not jump. Then you jumk of a ledge? in the game? then waht?
I know it's stupid of me to think this way
But other than my way of thinking. This is one awesome product, although it's probably going to cost a alot of money, probably atleast 1,000. ----------------------- EclipseSquad

One problem is that, say in an Epoc Paint Program, married men will get into trouble because, statistically, we think about sex every 7 seconds. :P

Um, for some of us traditional gaming means....Atari 2600....
That aside, this technology could have some far-reaching applications in nearly every field of endeavor...in particular, the Net of the cyberpunk's movement's visions could very well be a reality within years instead of decades. ----------------------- [-=Nazgul Squadron=-]

Heh, I'm already thinking about possible military applications. Just think, you could link these up to un-manned tanks and aircraft, with some potentially incredible results... ----------------------- FM/ESN Chipmunk Man/Nazgul 4/Phoenix/mSSD Atrus/DEF/VEN/VE/(=A=)(=SA=)(=*MA*=)[LoC][MC:1]x3[LSM][VC:B]

Chip, the only two pitfalls I can see will be that EPOC applied to military apps will dehumanize the face of war and make it more acceptible("it's only a game" or "it's not as if we're sending men onto the battlefield"), and more lethal and crippling, especially when the combatants begin targeting the controllers rather than automatons they're controlling, particularlly with directed electrical surges, EMP weapons, nerve gas or nano- and biological weapons.
Personally, I don't think it will replace soldiers on the battlefield for the simple fact that it costs less to train, feed and pay organic soldiers than it will to build, and, more importantly, maintain military robots, especially an armed force of infantry, aerial and sea-going automations.
What the EPOC technology will most likely do in the field of military tech will be to enhance existing telepresence/UAV battlefield systems, as well as usher in a new generation of crewed military vehicles, warships and aerospace craft operated by neural control(e.g. Firefox, The Ayes Of Texas, etc).
More significantly, can anyone imagine the brand new world EPOC would open up for autistic or otherwise developmentally-challenged children?

Of course it would work a little bit, maybe we wouldn't have to worry aobut kiling people in the line of duty, or on 'real' Battlefields. Maybe, we could make a program/game, that would have the essentials of a real battle, same terrain, weapons, veichcles. Then what we could do is give the program to other militaries and Make wars that way, or declare wichever. Then nobody would die, just virtual reality soldiers. and once they died they couldn't log back into the system, it would take a lot of planning, but it would save lives. think about it. ----------------------- EclipseSquad

I thought people in comas had little to no brain function....:P
It would be kind of cool though, surgery could become much easier, esspecialy for the delicate things..hook that up to a robot with a cutting tool and you have a hand that won't shake and something that can make cuts much more accurtly than the human hand, but it's still controlled by a human thinking about what he/she wants to be done.
The guy on the table would probably hope that the doctor didn't suddenly have a thought like 'If i cut that he'd die'. ----------------------- SC/WO2/Trevor Evenson/Nazgul 1(1-1)/Wing 1/mSSD Atrus/DEF/VEN/VE/(=*A*=)(=*SA*=)[VC:B][LSM][BRC][SWC][GWC]

The amount of brainwave activity in coma patients usually depends on the amount of damage the brain has sustained.
The EPOC technology might work with that, not to mention proving to be tremendous breakthrough in the field of facilitated communication.
And, yeah, surgery by telepresence will become very possible, with surgeons not even having to be in the same room, let alone the same country as the patients on which they operate, allowing for specialists to step in and assist with particularlly tricky or high-risk surgeries--or even to perform battlefield surgery--without regard for distance.
As Garet mentioned, the potential for something like this extends well beyond video gaming.
It's just up to us to realize that potential. ----------------------- [-=Nazgul Squadron=-]

RK, am i reading you right or did you just say that disputes between countries would be solved by playing a video game?
I could never, ever see that working. If i use Al-Qaeda as an example, do you really think they would be content just because they kill more of our virtual men than we can kill of theirs?
Sadly, and i hate to put a downer on everything, wars will continue the way they have for hundreds of years as long as humans still exist on this planet. The human nature is to fight for survival.
Although, im going to end on a lighter note. If all warfare is transplanted into a video game, we pretty much have enough gaming ability here in the VE to set ourselves up as the worlds number one superpower... ----------------------- Private First Class Kanderin Draken

Fine Crush my dream Kanderin, but some day when it happens, I shall Kill you.
But think about it. They may not be content, but it's easier to win wars, and I bet you ten to onw, lot's more people woud wnat to do it. Besides, I think someone said something about a reobot and stuff. We could hide bases that use this technology, and use robots for war. The possibilities are endless.

I know, Lightsabers instead of guns if the reality of war through video games could be real. ANd DC-17m Interchangeable Combat systems instead of standard issue wepondry. DC-15 Rifles and DC-15s pistols. The possibilities are endless. and instead of standard issue armor we could have KAtarn armor. With video games the possiblities are endles. Just think about it.
