On an an unrelated note, how did I get demoted once I retired?

I see Kadann poking around here, hopefully he can help us get things started.

Still lurking, and still completely dedicated to this community.  I'll be glad to join any story that starts, whether here on the ComNet, or over on the EE's HoloNet.

But I have to add, I'm still in agreement with Aeos's last post: we need to update the site, if we're going to attract and retain new members to supplement the inevitable loss of members as their life circumstances change.

I spearheaded an effort in September of 2013 (more than 2 years ago, now) to get Kadann and/or Talon involved in this discussion.  I just checked: my PM still hasn't been opened by either of them.

There are clearly oodles of us who are still around and who still want to do Imperial play-by-post rping.  There's obviously a new era of Star Wars fandom about to dawn, that could be harnessed and really rejuvenate this place.  By all means, let's get back in the swing of things... but if we don't have an actual plan to fix the things we've all agreed were problems for at least HALF A DECADE, I wonder if we might all be better served over on the EE's infrastructure?

Don't get me wrong.  I'd prefer the VE's decades-long pedigree, I'd prefer to keep the long history of this community, I'd prefer the ComNet's more robust feature set, I'd prefer the bells and whistles like the Store and Bank, and I'd prefer the nostalgia of this place... but without at least a bare bones overhaul to the main page, none of that is more important than having something the community can actually change and adapt to fit their changing needs.

EDIT: And hey, Slasher, I think the Navy inserted a new rank while your were away.  It's not that you were demoted, it's that the levels of rank had new names (including the level you had earned), to accommodate the new level of rank.  Might be wrong; it's been a while.    But I think that's what happened.

I say dump all the comnet content and archive it like ComNet V1. Use the same infrastructure, but start fresh.

This is exactly what we need to get this ball rolling.

I will be the first to say that the fall of the Navy lays on my shoulders.  In truth, I got burnt out, and every time I planned to hand off the NCC position, drama happened and I felt that it just wasn't worth relinquishing. That, in turn, led to my lack of motivation within the community. While the lower ranked members (those who publish the content) are the backbone (and the reason we have activity, I might add), it is ultimately those who take up the responsibility of creating content to keep everyone active. Without an active leadership, things die. For this, I apologize to everyone.

Now, I cannot guarantee you anything, I can say that I have been in contact with Kadann for the last week, and he is more than willing to get this place back to snuff.

What else could we focus on to get things going first?  I can imagine that getting things going again would take the cake.

Though, if we need something, I can get something in there.  We should probably chat first so we know what all we need though.

Now, I am going to open a new ComNet Subforum in the Navy (bottom subforum for the Navy). If you are interested in assisting in the recreation of the VE, that's where we can have dedicated discussions on individual ideas (one idea per thread, please).

Technology has come a long way... we can do better than Flash:





And we don't even need to go super fancy right away.  Even if all we do is update the text currently found on vastempire.com/main, so it reads better and cleaner than all the typos currently on there, and then move that page wholly over to vastempire.com, that will thereby replace the Flash landing page.  Just those two steps: update the content, then move it to overwrite the landing page.  That's all we'd need to at least have a fighting chance of getting newbies in to the ComNet and wiki.

We need an IRC channel.  I know Stormz mentioned getting irc.fossiltechnology.org back up and running, but I'm wondering if we have a place we can chat, to aid in getting things done efficiently.

Many of us are on Facebook, too.  They have an instant chat feature...

I cannot express how happy I am to see this happening and with this much interest, I'm going to do as much as I can to make some time  for this club. Huge nostalga rush. I even remembered my password on the first try.
