I'm decently good at swordplay. I take kendo and that helps a lot. I'm more suited to using a katana in general. If you remember BV, who's currently AWOL, he's the undisputed master of swordplay as far as I'm concerned. ----------------------- Private First Class D'har Leth

I'm decent, tops. I took fencing classes once, and I'm sure years of slashing in hockey aids it slightly. ----------------------- Jester Squad

I said I was decent at best. Fencing is graceful sword play that only helps your coordination. I agree, I'd probably be chopped up durign a sword fight, but at least I'd look good while doing it. ----------------------- Jester Squad

Well I took fencing for 3 years told them they were all stupid di**s and quit then I practiced regular swordplay for 9 years still doing it now 5 hours a day even at work but thats with a broken golf club im good enough to take out 3 maybe 4 decent swordsmen fighting against me i might end up with about 10-20 cuts and bruises but i'll kill them and live.(by the way thats not bragging.)(I use a long sword or a short sword or a bastard sword)

I got my experience from a couple of years of LARP fighting, so I'm quite used to the moves even though I'm not used to the weight of a real sword. I would rely on Culexus judgement here but for myself I think that I'm quite good, esspecially when fighting with a shortsword. -----------------------

I've had 6-7 years of Katana and Broadsword training. So i can say im a pretty decent fighter. the choice of sword I would choose in a fight would have to be a Celtic Broadsword and a Kodachi best weapons to have in a fight ----------------------- Aegis Squadron

I practice Aikido, and lately have specifically branched into the sword and staff art of the discipline.
Like Garet, I've also done fencing. Those suits weren't my style, however. ----------------------- NightStalkers

I took a bit of saber classes and it is quite limiting due to the structured fakeness of modern fencing. Trying to make combat a sport doesn't work, you're just using the same equipment. Just take Fairbairn and Applegate's work on gun slinging and convulsive grip shooting in contrast to traditional paper shilouettes and proper breathing.
So the variety of sword training you folks have described undertaking, is it more of practical focus or sporting focus? ----------------------- Urm...I'm back?

I practice because at the renonnaissance(tried to spell check it didn't work) in the middle of the place most people get to watch four guys dressed up in armor with swords, lances, and a shield they start out jousting and then when the fall of there horse it becomes a sword fight. I happen to be one of those guys although they all have different countrys flags I represent Germany there, so I practice because its my job in renonnaissance fair. ----------------------- trp/pfc

How the hell can I get a job at a faire?
And again, a katana is generaly the way to go, at least for me. It's light and sharper than a razor, which means that it requires not strength byt correct form and speed, hence all the people getting one across the neck and their heads falling off seconds later. In theory, there isn't anything a katana can't cut. ----------------------- Private First Class D'har Leth

In theory only, the katana of course wa used by the samurai, but the had bamboo armor which the katana could kill a few samurai with the armor on but it would break very quick thats why they had like 3-4 normal katanas with them. Oh and the fair job you can get it if your the owners friend I don't get money from him except for helping him make the fair better. I get usually forty dollars for helping him and if I win and I usually do then I get one hundred dollars for helping him. ----------------------- trp/pfc

Katanas are known to be extremely sharp but also extremly fragile, considering I never tried sword fighting, I guess I would rather go with a shortsword and a shield, cant go wrong with those. ----------------------- He will give them death, and they will love him for it -Gladiator

Katanas are not fragile, that is a myth as is samurai wearing bamboo armor. The katana was folded steel and samurai traditionally carried one katana and one wakizashi. The katana was mainly used for combat, but there were people known to fight with both swords at once. It was also considered polite to remove the katana upon entering a house, but wearing of a wakizashi was permitted. The wakizashi was also used for hara kiri or seppuku. The armor they wore was generally leather and metal or all leather. ----------------------- Private First Class D'har Leth

Practical use of swords: gang fights and ZOMBIES!
Katanas don't break, they lose their edge. The sword core is durable as...Chuck Norris, but the edge is very brittle. It's meant to slice through light armor and flesh, in that order. European's wore plated armor (not very encumbering if well made), so they used heavier swords that could chop that armor. Different modes of combat.
Trying to hack through European heavy battle armor with a katana is a loser's proposition, but a blow to lighter Japanese armor with a bastard sword spells much pwnage. Not even starting to talk about European sheild combat techniques.
At least that's what I've drawn from the numerous articles I've read on the subject. ----------------------- Urm...I'm back?

Sorry,
I'm new to this site and am bored of waiting for a reply to my profile requests.
So I started to look through the lounge posts and found this.
I am quite proficient with all types of swords. A two edged Scottish Claymore is my favorite. However, any of the Samuri swords, previuosly mentioned will do in a pinch.
Let's not forget the calvary sabre used throughtout the U.S. since the Revolutionary War. The sabre was an effective weapon throughout Mideveil times.
I think it was the Muslims who first introduced sabres of a sort. Or maybe it was cutlass's I can't remember.
But, I do remember picking up a stick and metal garbage can lid as my shield an fighting swordplay for days on end as a kid. From there I just kind of got proficient .
I even fenced some, myself. Fencing is fun and not is easy as some of you have pretended it to be.You who fenced are being modest and I bet your'e really good at Swordplay ----------------------- Grammer, mechanics, punctuation, spelling, diction, effectiveness in the science, and larger elements are the facts at hand.

Sorry not to correct anyone but I think you meant Ikaido, which is actually a self-defense for women and children, taught as a subsiderary to Karate. I took it when I lived on the island of Guam. where all the little kids were taught the art of fighting.
I always was real good at defending myself, it's just I got better after living there.
In after years, I was about twelve, and I consigned to do lawn work for a a really old chinese dude. After, I had accomplished the work he assigned me, and gave me a much needed $20.00, he took me into his house, which, by the way was awesome.
He showed me ancient weapons and things that noone would normally see.
It was in after days that he would invite me over and taught me how to use a staff. They have another name for it, but I can't remember now. Bonzia stick, pool stick, staff, large stick. It doesn't really matter.Kanboo? I really can't remember.
I was recently at the local pool hall where at Navy veteran told me how I sounded like I was full of $#!+ basically. However, when I confronted him and told him how real my life has been, he came to understand.
I have a real good way of confronting people without fighting, because, that was what I was taught too,
Are you to stupid to match wits with me cuz you wanna fight?
They back down, ALMOST, everytime.
Look out for that one time tho., you just gotta duck dodge and run maybe. It depends on how quick they are? ----------------------- Grammer, mechanics, punctuation, spelling, diction, effectiveness in the science, and larger elements are the facts at hand.
