I'm at the library, looking to expand the kind of books I read and I came upon Tom Clancy. He has tons of books out and I was wondering which one I should get for a first read. Anyone have any suggestions?

Screw that.

If you want to read one of his books and not get involved in characters you will need to follow over many books, read Red Storm Rising. Don't get me wrong.  It's a huge book.  Red October would be the better pick if you were just experimenting with Clancy, but I've yet to read anything better from him than Red Storm Rising.

That said, Without Remorse is right up there too and gives you a backstory to one of his best characters (though it is kind of a spoiler book).

Red Storm Rising is indeed a great book. Sure, it's a little big, but it's worth it.

Red Storm Rising, Definately. I love that book. I also enjoyed Patriot Games and Bio-Strike. The NetForce series isn't bad either.

I'm going to have to agree with Red Storm Rising. It's good. Trust me. Who doesn't?

For that one, the book came first. It's a helluva read, if you can stick it out through the usual Clancy-writes-enough-to-use-the-damn-book-to-beat-a-whale-to-death-syndrome.

Rainbow Six is one of my all-time favorite books. Extremely well done, and you don't have to already know who the characters are. I even used a scene where Ding interogates a terrorist as inspiration for one of my story posts.
