Have a listen, and understand I spoke unscripted, so I rehashed a bit some stuff quite a bit, and  I also used some weird analogies. I don't speak English natively and sometimes I try to carry expressions in my home language over to English.

But yeah, this is how I feel, and this is how felt I could break the barrier of Comnet with my personal voice, not my written words.

I definitely agree with most of what you said. We need to make this the VE that needs to be, not the VE that was.

Before I say anything else, I would like to thank Aeos for this message that is so personal, not just to her, but to this community. There is no way to take this message as something said in character, and I think that's important.

It's probably no surprise to anyone that I agree with what Aeos has to say, it runs parallel and together with much of what I have to say. There is something she mentions in passing about halfway through, however, that I think we could maybe dwell on a little.

This is a community. We are not a military dictatorship and none of us have to be here. We really need to start acting like it. Most of us are friends who have been together through a lot of stuff together, some of you I have known for the better part of a decade. I'm not going to say we don't need some administrative positions, but we don't need many. Like any group of friends, we can just work together and if problems arise, then we work through them, or over them, or something, together. We don't need a highly organized system telling us how to interact, we do that naturally.

The way the VE used to work was fundamentally broken. It worked fine, at one time, when the club was much, much larger. It doesn't work now, no sense keeping the bits that don't work and no sense trying to rebuild what was. We're a different community now and we should take our strength from that, not the pillars of a fallen empire.

What we were is Ozymandias, King of Kings. Let's leave it there.

All I can say is thank you Ae. You have hit every nail on the head for me, so much so it made me emotional. I could hear the passion about what you were saying and finally I feel someone gets what I want out of this. I was going to do a voice note in return and I still might, I just need to gather my thoughts and pin point them so I don't ramble.

Once again, thank you.

Look, I rambled quite a bit there, and the one thing I haven't said in that note, was thanking, and honouring the founding members of this community for bringing to life such an incredible place.

Additionally, it was presumptuous to suggest that every decision made affects the visual design language, I meant that in reference to the website overhaul.

It was not as articulate as I had hoped, and I am obsessing about about the revamp from visual creative perspective, and not considering other points. I got a bit tunnel visioned there.

I definitely excluded other issues, that does not mean I don't acknowledge their priorities.

My few thoughts on trying to make this a successful community:

No training course. There should be biography approval at most. People want to jump on in and get involved. Don't make it one person's responsibility to get everyone up to speed on our canon. Make it the community's.

No reports. People will write what they want, when they want. Don't denigrate people for not positing, encourage people to post. Make thing accessible and fun and people will post.

If people have an idea for an organisation let them do it. Don't keep the decision making in the hands of the few who happened to have been here the longest. If people say "Hey, let's get together and write a group of undercover commandos in Republic space" let them do it. Some things will fail, others will flourish. Community led experience is key. Writer freedom helps self-sustain a community

Rank transfers. Controversial, but we'll proven on star wars roleplay sites to be something that brings in members. If someone is a good writer and has Dark Jedi Knight Kraug on their current site, let him port him over to our roleplay. If he sees that he has to write a Stormtrooper for two months before he can start at square one again, you've probably just lost a good writer.

Raz is back!

Ae, we spoke over Slack, but for the benefit of all to see: thank you, for posting this.  I lend my voice to the chorus agreeing with you.

Raz, I love all those ideas.

I've been pushing for more writer freedom in these reform discussions, too.  But I'm not sure about completely abandoning the distinction between "official" and "unofficial" stories.  I think there's some use, in having the club share a setting, timeline, and canon.  By all means, we should encourage creativity even outside that setting, timeline, and canon.  But having a "campaign" that is shared among us helps make this more than just a board where people post their own fan fiction.

Ae, as a graphic designer too, I am 100% with you in both the literal and non-literal aspects.

I am so happily surprised that everyone keeps saying over and over again that we want to change. I had written a rant here about how I felt about my time in the VE before, but realized it's probably not the best to rehash old feelings over the comnet because it's the past.

Fun is a factor of our community that we can't ignore. Systems are great for a base structure, but the logo analogy is apt. The more bells and whistles you throw on something, the harder it is to make sense of it all. White space in design is actually something designers purposefully include in order to draw the eye to the pieces that are important. Not the random colors but the title of the event, its location, and when it starts.

Letting go is a lesson I've been learning a lot about recently. And I think we're finally in a place where we can let go of a lot. Redoing our canon will be therapeutic in that it gives us a fresh start. It wipes the slate clean of any reminders of the past and lets us move forward.

Finally I just want to say: thanks for showing me a different side to many of you that I had not had the privilege of seeing. Over the internet so much can get lost in translation, and this has been a great reminder that we are all diverse in beautiful ways

As a (failing) writer, the part about letting go reminded me of something Stephen King said in On Writing: "Kill your darlings." It might be his most quoted piece of writing, and in context there is a good reason. It means no matter how much you love a paragraph, a plot, a character, a sentence, any one piece of a manuscript, if it doesn't work, kill it, remove it. Not everything can be fixed and not everything fits and when it doesn't, no matter how lovely, it's your responsibility to get rid of it.

Agreed, yet again.  And hi, Avalar!

But don't believe Snipes about the (failed) part, folks: his stuff is really, really good.

I think you have a great idea there. Star Wars has always been about letting your imagination run wild. That said, it's important to keep track of what's going on and there has to be someone that keeps them in check.

You don't go from Crewman to Fleet Admiral overnight, but any goal should be attainable - assuming the appropriate dues are paid and sacrifices made.
