Tanus didn’t mind his job; it was relatively easy, despite getting shot at on a consistent basis by dissidents who occasionally had bigger guns than he did. But things were beginning to look up for Blackjack squad. Despite the loss of several ASLs, Tanus was doing a pretty decent job of keeping his squad in check and managed to get two new members, men he had known for a long time. Now all he needed was something to do. I wonder if a training exercise is a good idea for the squad. At least that’ll keep them from going insane. As Tanus went for his paperwork on his desk, his datapad started to ring. He picked it up and glanced at the number, realizing quickly that he had to take the call.

“Good morning Kami. How goes the day for Storm platoon?”

Tanus’ response at first was the ruffling of papers and heavy swearing; Tanus was glad to know that the work load had not changed. Soon however he heard Kami’s voice on the other end.

“Good morning Tanus. All is going well for me, thanks for asking. And I have a feeling your day is about to get a whole lot better for Blackjack squad. I’ll be over to your office in a few minutes. I have something you’ll be most interested in.”

Tanus smiled as he put down his datapad; he knew what Kami meant. Finally, another mission for Blackjack. Now I can keep the men happy. Tanus put on his caf machine and waited a few minutes for it to brew. Just as it finished, Kami walked in. Tanus gave her a rigid salute; Kami returned it with vigor. As she took a seat, Tanus handed her a cup of caf, two creams and two sugars.

“Wow, you even know how I take my caf? Good lord, what else do you know?”

Tanus smiled as he took a seat and put in his traditional five packets of sugar. “Yeah, well considering if anyone takes it the way I do, they might die of a heart attack. I just generally cut the diabetes count in half.” He grabbed a stirring rod and handed one to Kami as the smell of caf filled his nostrils. Kami laughed.

“Well, I can’t have you dying on me yet. I have a mission that Blackjack is very much qualified for. It involved political takeover and a trade agreement.”

Kami slid Tanus a file, rather thick considering, full of photos and profiles on various government figures. When he opened it up, he saw a picture of a rather large planet, covered in red and cities everywhere: Adumar. Tanus had heard the planet was in recent turmoil, but apparently it had gotten bad enough for the Vast Empire to send in some of the Stormtrooper Corps. Tanus spent some time looking over files on the officials as Kami quietly sipped on her caf. When he was done, he set the file down and looked across across to Kami, who had a knowing smile on her face.

“So, there’s something you’re not telling me. Knowing us, we just don’t go on to a planet and topple a dictator’s regime in good faith. What are we getting out of this?”

Kami set down her cup and looked up at Tanus; now it was time for business.

“The current system is a dictatorship; you’ve gathered that much and that is part of the reason of why you’re going there. The other reason is the undermining party that is going to be helping you. The second political party is being either killed off or put in prison more and more each day. Having said that, there is a resistance movement against the government. But there is more to the story. The new government group really likes the Vast Empire, and has seen some of our work first hand – the leader is a former Stormtrooper. At any rate, they want to set up a trade agreement with us for arms and supplies if we topple over the current regime, which at the moment has no allies and won’t even come close to settling with us. That is where you guys come in. You are going to do lightning raids on the army, just to scare them into thinking that something big is happening. At the end of that, you’re going to strike them hard and fast. I’m giving you one week to make this happen.”

Tanus sighed and sat back in his seat; he was used to this kind of work, especially since he was an ARC. But this didn’t sound like a mission – it sounded like suicide. Then again, what mission doesn’t? Tanus thought.

“So you want us to go on this planet, topple a dictator, establish a new government and set up an arms trade in one week?”

Kami simply nodded; Tanus sighed a little and started to massage his temples as he knew what his next question would be.

“When do we leave?”

Kami picked up the file and looked it over quickly; he could only assume that she had to make some calls to get them in safely.

“You leave tomorrow morning. The shuttle will have you there by mid-day, Adumar time. The trip takes about eight hours, so rest on the shuttle. You’ll be going with all of your gear, so be aware that you’ll be being watched. I’m going to see how I can get you down there undetected. I’ll tell you as soon as I find out.”

Kami walked up and out of the room, her datapad already in her hand. Tanus looked over the file one more time. This was going to be long trip.

--- --- --- --- ---

Tanus made the call to everyone to meet him down in the ready room in ten minutes. Most of the squad was there and sitting before that. Tanus was glad to see some new and old faces, most notably Alater, who has gone on leave while Tanus remained leader. When everyone was seated, Tanus fired up the holoprojector.

“Good morning everyone. I’m glad to see that everyone is awake and alive, which is good, because I’ve just been given a mission for you lot. The mission entails us going to Adumar and ridding them of a dictator and his regime. In its place, we are to set up a new form of government that will also establish Adumar as an ally of the Vast Empire. Having said that, the current regime is absolutist, and will kill or imprison anyone that speaks out against it. For that reason, we will be working with a rebel organization whose task it is to undermine the current system. We’ll be hitting the same targets as them, be sharing in the same resources and working with the same men and women for one week. Any questions thus far?”

The room was silent; Tanus knew that the understood as well as he did the weight of the mission.

“Excellent. Now, I don’t have a clue as to where we’ll be landing when we hit planet side, nor do I have any idea who we will be working with; Kami is handling that as we speak. However, we will be using our squad standard equipment, and I will be letting you take two personal weapons of choice so that when we hit targets, it looks a little more random. I do not want anyone coming home in body bags gentlemen. Let me make that perfectly clear. When we do hit planet side, we’ll be meeting up with someone from the rebel unit and from there we will be hitting targets all over Adumar. When the week is done and new government is set up, we can come home. As for deployment, all I know is that we’re taking a Sentinel, it’ll take eight hours to get there, we’ll be landing in mid-afternoon and that we’ll have a contact on the planet to bring us in. Beyond that, I have nothing to add. Chances are I’ll find out where we’re landing as we get on the shuttle or when we’re halfway to Adumar. That is all Blackjack. Dismissed.”

Tanus shut down the holoprojector as the others started to file out, one by one in silence. As he left the ready room, he looked down at his chrono. By this time tomorrow, I’ll be on Adumar, probably getting shot at by someone who really wants me dead. Let’s make the best of it. Tanus walked back to his condo in silence, hands in his pockets, thinking about the mission at hand.

Orobos lashed out with his sparring staff. The other trooper ducked quickly returning with a blow towards his stomach. Orobos sidestepped the blow but the other troopers foot came around to catch him in the back of the knee. His leg buckled from under him. with his other leg he pushed himself forward as he fell rolling and coming up behind his opponent. The man ducked spinning around but Orobos had swung his staff down quick and low and cought the man on the back. This left Orobos open for a split second which his opponent seized, reaching up and grabbing Orobos by the fore-arms he pulled bringing his foot up to pushing Orobos over with it. Landing flat on his back he stared up at the man who;d beat him. The round had nearly lasted for half an hour and they were both exhausted.

"Nice job," The man said staring down at Orobos who couldn't bring himself to get up.

********************************

Orobos sat up at the bar. A small hoop of smoke swirled past him from the man with the long pipe sitting five seats down from him. He took another mouthful of the fiery amber liquid feeling the heat radiating from it as it went down. He looked into the mirror that sat on a durasteal shelf behind the bar. He could see the long line of regulars including himself. He'd been going here more and more since there last mission. He couldn't find anything else to do apart from bashing up the training droids which eventually had gotten old.

Orobos stared around the bar again taking in the new and the old faces. He felt a sudden pang of Deja Vu. He wasn't surprised at this as he'd been coming in and out constantly over the past few months since he'd joined the Corp. Though there was another feeling. Like the way he'd felt just before........

His datapad buzzed and he sat up straight. Ripping the compact metallic square out he stared at the message. Tanus was assembling the squad for a briefing. Finally. I was going to jump out of a window eventually if this had gone on any longer, Orobos thought over exaggerating the long wait in his mind.

Orobos pushed himself and his stool away from the counter. He tossed a few credits including a tip onto the counter. The small chips slid towards the bartender who scooped them up with a sly smile. Stepping outside into the brightness of the corridor Orobos walked down his usual route drawing the map up in his mind to get to the briefing room. The hallways were unusually quiet for this time of the night.

Orobos reached the door which slid open. He stepped inside where most of the squad and its leader sat. He grabbed a spindly chair and sat in the corner crossing his arms as he sat down. The rest of the squad arrived eventually. They were all seated when Tanus began his briefing. They all sat in silence listening to the amount they were expected to get done in such a short space of time. They were only soldiers. He was sure re-establishing a planets economy was in the job description when it was read to him (he couldn't read basic at the time).

When Tanus dismissed the squad they all filed outside. In the hallway many of the squad reached for cigarettes, cigars and other variety of items. Orobos reached over and plucked a cigarette from Gates' packet bringing it up to his lips.

"Didn't know you smoked."

"I don't," Orobos replied lighting it up. He walked down the corridor back to there barracks. He was planning on getting a good few hours before there mission. From what he'd just been told he'd have to be alert as he had for almost every other mission.

Remembering the incident with the coffee and hiding some smuggled beer on Yuka Orobos chuckled to himself. Reaching the barracks he sat on his bed. He flicked the cigarette across the room were it landed in the small empty waste bucket. He swung his legs up onto the bunk and drifted of to sleep for a minute almost forgetting what they had to do in a few hours time.

After listening to the briefing, Gates returned to his barracks room. He gathered some personal equipment, when his comlink started to buzz.

"Hello?" Gates said cautiously.

"Hey, G-man!" an over friendly voice came over the link.

Gates groaned. His kid cousin picked really bad times to call him.

"Hey, are you groaning!? Aren't you happy to hear from me?" said the rather annoying voice again.

"Sure," grumbled Gates. Let's see... 500 Squad Repeating Blaster Riot Gun...ooh, lookit, a PLX-rocket launcher. Yay! he thought to himself, pulling the heavy weapons from their lockers.

"You don't sound to happy cuz, is it all that smoking?"

Gates rubbed his hand over his eyes, and resigned himself to trying to get the other to shut up.

*************** Some time later (and a few headaches) ****************

Gates woke from a light nap, turned to his bathroom, and swallowed a couple pain killers.

He lit up a cigarette. Then he shoved the two weapons into his backpack, grabbed his armor, placed that onto a trolley, and rolled the thing towards the armory. There, he gestured to the corporal-at-arms, a young, bright looking fellow.

"Sir? How can I help?"

"BlackJack standard load."

"Of course sir, right away."

An E-11 and a riot stick were handed under the metal mesh divider.

"Thanks mate."

"Welcome, sir."

Alater grunted with effort as he heaved the younger alien off of his arm. Rutian spun away with effortless practice, swinging the curved blade of his staff-sword as he did so. The blade curved in a low arc, cutting out at the back of the big Barabel's knee. A vicious sound like concrete cracking split through the silence followed shortly by a small roar as the vibrating blade sliced a bite out of Alater's leg. The problem with this technique was that due to Alater's size, most assumed he was slow and cumbersome. Instead his uninjured leg whipped out in a black blur to catch the blue Twi'lek on the shoulder. The resulting blow spun the retired Navy officer across the sparring floor. Such a blow would have shattered most men, but years of torture had taught Rutian to expect such things.

"Good, you're learning." Rutian said as he grabbed his shoulder, wincing a bit. His lekku twitched as he relocated his shoulder with a gruesome crack. The small crowd that had gathered around the two gasped a bit as both combatants stood up with wounds that would disable most men.

"You teach well my friend, if harshly." Alater hissed. Rutian raised the muscles where his eyebrows should have been in an expression of mild amusement and suprise as the big lizard slowly sunk into an offensive position. His movements were sudden, seemingly unseen but to the trained eye his intent was obviously lethal.

"What are they doing," Muttered a young Army regular from the side lines.

"Shut up and watch son. It's not every day you see a stormtrooper NCO actually get out of his armor and have a little fun. You can't even follow what's going on can you?" Another in the crowd called back. Their conversation was cut short as the Alater suddenly launched himself into the air. One in the crowd raised an eyebrow, but not in astonishment at the movement.

Most people can only manage to strike you with two feet, but there is something to be said for having a heavily muscled tail covered in scales so hard it could compete with vibroblades. The onslaught forced the blue alien into a drastic backflip that countered all three blows with a mix of hardened bone and staff. As he came down Alater wrapped a hand around the muscled arm of his opponent and smiled a toothy grin.

"Game over." He said, yellow slits staring into astonished blue eyes. With one brutal twist the previously dislocated arm carried the alien martial artist to the mat with a thundering crash. Alater sighed a bit as he helped his friend up. A medic was itching at the side lines, the show having attracted his attention do to severely possible injury between to very deadly opponents. As Rutian hobbled off the mat the crowd dispersed and Alater sat down on a bench to catch his breath.

The stranger sat down next to Alater. He was a nondescript person, but so was almost everybody that worked for the Special Forces division. He grinned slightly as he looked down at the big NCO, muscles and scars bulging with every breath.

"That's not normal for you Sergeant." The man said, handing him a datapad.

Taking it Alater read through the file and hissed. He flexed his bad arm, claws extending and then retracting before turning to look back at him.

"Why do they think I need this?" He asked, his accent significantly less like that of a Barabel and approaching something like normal Common.

"Because you have become unpredictable Sergeant. Your assignment back in the Blackjack was a calculated risk, but we do not need an incident. This mission is crucial to a number of our plans and your expertise are needed. If you need any prove of this, look at yourself." He said and turned. As Alater watched him walk away he sighed and picked up his own datapad.

After a moment pulled up Tanus' address and sent him a message.

"We need to talk, your place?

Orobos lay staring at the ceiling. He'd spotted out the single crack over the corner and had counted the tiles twice. He had been asleep for three hours until he'd woken up to the empty room. He was still tired but for the love of him he couldn't go back to sleep. Deciding what could prove to be some useful hours for training or preparing himself for the mission ahead of them.

Pulling himself from the bed the springs screeched at him as he removed his weight from them. He pulled on the belt he wore in public just to have some resemblance between himself and the high tech civilisation he was living in. He walked down the hallways. Messengers and technicians ran past him.

He stopped for a large crowd of people also heading towards the training room they kept the droids in. The large group was made up of medics and engineers.

"C'mon the droids beaten him half to death!" a panicked medic shouted at the rest of the group who sprinted around the corner.

Orobos stopped then turned heading towards the sparring room. He decided he didn't want to train with the droids. Not tonight..... not ever again. He stopped by a small shop and picked up a bottle of a strong, water like alcoholic beverage. He was sure he'd need it. Most of the new recruits and veterans in the Stormtrooper Corp had joined either knowing some martial art from their homeworld or had learned it over the years of active service.

Walking in sure enough leaping around the place flips and twirls and all were two new recruits a few other watching as they danced lashing out at each other with sparring staffs. Orobos new he'd be battered and bruised. They would run circles around him and his brute force approach.

Sitting down he watched for a while. The taller man flipped the other man smacking him to the ground. Orobos realised that the man who'd won was the same man who beat him the day before. He seemed to realise this as well as he pointed towards Orobos. He wasn't much for being bossed around by a corporal but he wasn't about to pass up a challenge either.

***************************

Orobos stepped out of the sparring room with his drink half gone. He was sure he had a cut on his head but it wasn't bleeding that badly. He had a hell of a lot of bruises too. He'd been smacked repeatedly to the mat by his opponent but had managed to bring the man down a fare few times as well.

He felt even more tired then he had before both mentally and physically. He headed off towards the barracks bottle in hand. The air conditioned air was nice and cool. Cooler then usual thought they were having some sort of heat wave in the local area. He reached the door he'd been looking for. It slid open and he stumbled in and towards his bed. He fell into it falling asleep nearly instantly.

Equipment gathered and placed in his room, Gates went roving around the base. As he left the barracks, Orobos came back, a bit battered and bloody.

"What happened to you?"

"Training," the other said tiredly.

Gates continued on. He saw the stromtrooper competition room, where skirmishes went on all the time. He stepped in.

Some young man was talking to a veteran. "Yeah, so'd you watch those two BJ guys fight? Not each other, mind you. The two aliens they're huge!"

"Ahhh," said another, older recruit. "I bet I could run circles around those big dumb apes. You know what else BJ stands for..?"

At this, Gates, deciding he needed a release and deciding this poor bastard was the one he was going to do it to, tapped him.

"I belong to BlackJack too, you ass."

"Big deal. You're what, six-three? You'll have the same exact approach!"

"You want to test that theory?"

"Sure, you want to?"

The chevrons on the man's jacket said 'lance' but his attitude said 'veteran.'

The two men stepped into the circle; the lance removed his jacket.

The other put up his fists; Gates put up one finger.

His face turned purple, and he jumped at Gates.

The tall soldier stepped aside at the last moment and kicked him in the back of the legs. He fell.

"Brute force can be combined with agility, in case you can't use your eyes."

The other stood unsteadily, then charged again, trying to anticipate Gates' dodge.

Gates stood stock-still and the other bounced off, grabbing at Gates' arms. The BlackJack shook him off with an elbow to the face.

Gates brushed invisible dust off of his jacket, whilst the other rubbed at the blood coming from his nose.

"You want to try again? How many times am I gonna have to kick your ass?"

Gates waded in slowly, and the other prepared to defend himself. Gates swung a fist, as if to feint, but followed through anyway. There was a thick sound of his fist smashing into the middle-chest area, then a sweep of the leg put the lance on the ground.

He sprang back up, and started raining punches; they bounced off of Gates forearms, his shoulders or were deflected.

Finally, tired of getting hit, Gates lifted a foot and smashed it into the other's side. Then he did it again, and again, until the lance stepped out of bounds.

Gates left without a word, but with a smile on his face.

Great...

The word rang through her mind as Saphira was handed her datapad. Already late to hear the brief she had to do with  reading  what was on the datapad.

"At least the mission should be intresting."

At least she knew one of the squad members. Alater was probably the one that knew her the most as she left her newly quarters. At least  Saph was already packed! All her gear was  in bags. Those that wern't needed were saflty in her gear locker. So with nothing much else to do, the twi'lek walked down the  halls until something tickled the back of her neck. Her eyes looked  up to see  a few personal walking back and forth. Knowing her instincts she went down the way they were leaving. It wasn't a long walk  before she came up to a room and peered inside to see Alater sitting on the floor.

"Alater?" Saph asked. Her voice filled with concern as he looked up to her. "Are you alright?"

"I'm fine.. Just an excercise." He paused for a moment as he stood. "You missed the breifing.."

"I know. I had some issues getting my transfer papers over here. Someone in Dispersing lost some of it.." She replied, crossign her arms under her chest.  "Don't change the subject.. You look worried.."

Alater shrugged. "I'm not worried.."  He moved forward towards her as Saphira stepped in front of him. Reaching to his sleeves as she  felt the divice still clining to his arm.

"Then what is on your mind?" She asked. Alater regarded her for a moment before he reached up with a hand and took hers in his. Almost squeezing it to o much as Saph winced and pulled it away.

"Nothing..Its not much to concern you with.."

Saph glowered as her lek twitched.  "Alater.. Don't make me fight you to find out whats always on your mind. I need to work with you again. Not wonder if we can still work as a team..."

Tanus went to the gym, as was his routine when he had some downtime before a mission. He went to the training equipment and did a few reps; he hardly even felt it anymore. At this point, the only workout he seemed to get was from combat. After a while, he got bored and went to the boxing area. He started on the punching bag for a while before he started to hear snickering in the background. He turned around and saw a few privates standing there laughing, holding up their hands to their mouths trying to stifle their laughter. Tanis just sighed; putting twits in their place was getting to be bothersome.

“Is there something you want to say Private? Or should I just continue schooling you in combat like everyone else seems to?”

The smiles fell from each of the private’s faces; Tanus knew that his job was done and turned back to the punching bag with a smirk on his face. However, he knew that they had not left. He sighed once more and turned around.

“Okay, I’ll bite. What do you three want?”

The middle private stepped forward; Tanus was surprised he even had the stones to try. Tanus stepped up until both he and the private were both nose to nose.

“Well sergeant, my buddies and I have a bet that I can beat you in hand-to-hand, and since I’m a former martial arts champion from Kuat, I think I have a fair shot at winning that bet. What do you say?”

Tanus just lowered his head and shook it; this was getting ridiculous, but he had to oblige the fool.

“Sure, I’ll do it, if it means shutting you up.”

Tanus lead the way towards the sparring arena, where a judge droid appeared from the side lines.

“Who will be the competitors this match?”

Tanus pointed to both himself and the private; this was going to be over quickly.

“Fighters, get into position.”

Tanus fell back into a comfortable Stava stance, and then fell into a feint using a Beast Rider style. Tanus was really interested to see what this man could do. He then fell into a K’thri stance, one that Tanus knew very well. Oh this boy does not know what he’s doing. The private launched a punch from almost extreme range, barely even getting close enough to touch Tanus’ nose. Tanus easily parried the blow and laid in a quick snap kick to the man’s ribs, just to soften him up. He recovered quickly, coming in with an elegant round kick, which Tanus blocked and countered with a hard palm strike to the shoulder. From there, Tanus stepped in to the strike, grabbed on to the private’s shoulder and tossed him over his back. The private flipped through the air before coming to the ground, barrel rolling and struggling to stand. Tanus walked over to him and just stood there for a bit, watching him struggle.

“You may as well give up son. You can’t beat me. Just give up now before you really get hurt.”

The private nodded, accepting defeat. The droid announced the victor and turned to leave, as did Tanus. As he was leaving the arena, a fist appeared next to his head. Tanus’ reaction was grabbing the wrist and tossing the assailant into a weight set. As the private stood up, dazed, Tanus just shook his head as he left the gym.

--- --- --- --- ---

Tanus was back in his room a few minutes later. He had to take a shower to get the stink of that idiot soldier off of him. As he stepped out of the shower, he wrapped a towel around his waist and heard a knock at his door. He threw on a shirt and some lounge pants and went to answer the door. When he did, a seven foot tall lizard man with razor edged teeth stood staring down at him. But Tanus just smiled.

“Alater! What’s up brother?”

"A lot actually." Alater replied, shifting his weight from one foot to the next. He stood there for a moment in the doorway before Tanus seemed to realize his social fo-pah.

"Oh, sorry, come in come in." He said, gesturing as he swept into his own appartments. The rooms were spacious enough and well designed; symptoms of somebody who'd been on the upper ends of the food chain for a little while. Nothing compared to the specialized living arrangements of his own home, but ARC was a little less rewarding than the people he worked for. None the less the appartment was comfortable, even for somebody of his size.

"So, long time no see big man. I was told that you were back in the ring, but didn't really have the time to meet up with you and get a full debrief. So, what's happened in your absence?" Tanus asked, pouring a drink for himself and offering one to Alater, who politely declined. Tanus raised an eyebrow at that but said nothing.

"A lot has happened since I've been gone Boss. Most of it really doesn't matter at this point, but there's something I'd like to show you before anybody else." Alater said, and began to roll up his left sleeve. There, a device was surgically implanted into his scales and down into his skin. A small blue light flickered every now and again, but for the most part it seemed dormant.

"Um, if you don't mind me asking, what the hell is that?" Tanus ask, putting down his drink before he dropped it. Alater had been acting weird lately, and this may or may not have been the cause of it. Normally the large lizard had barely understandable speech, and prefered to just kill somebody rather than seek a solution. Instead he had been calm, fluid, and generally creepy for a species known for their lack of self control. Lastly, this device pointed to something; Barabels were what one could call 'pure'.

"It's better if I just show you. Close your eyes." Alater said, and took of his shirt and layed it on a spare chair. Tanus closed his eyes and frowned.

"You know I don't like," Tanus started to say before a blinding light flashed through the room, painfull even through his closed eyes, "Surprises" He finished, opening his eyes.

Before him stood a large human male of the same size and muscle mass as Alater. He fit exactly as Alater had in what left of his clothes, and seemed to be pretty much the same, minus a tail. There were minor differences between him and a very large human as well, including what appeared to be scale like tattoos on most of his body. Lidless feral yellow slits stared down at him.

"That's um, that's something." Tanus said, reaching for his drink again.

"I'm not going to go into where or why I got this, but it's served its purpose and I thought that it may indeed be usefull again in further operations; I had them leave it in. I just thought you should know beforehand." Alater said, shifting from one foot to another.

"Yes well," Tanus stammered, regaining his ground, "I can see were that would be usefull. Why don't you stay, have a drink, and we'll catch up?"

"I'd love to Boss, but I've got to go." He said, starting to walk towards the door.

"Hot date?" Tanus asked, chuckling a bit.

"Yea, something like that." Alater said, leaving Tanus standing open mouthed at his own door.

******************

"We need to still work as a team." Saph said, looking up at him. Alater continued to walk, heading back towards his own little appartment. Saphira followed, right at his side.

"It's just all this, the device, you, I'm apprehensive on how it will affect the squad, and our careers." He said, suprisingly articulate. Something of the device was definately rubbing off on him.

"Well, we'll cross that bridge when we come to it." She said, arriving at the building that contained Alater's appartment. With a toothy grin he opened the carded the door and headed towards the turbolift to his appartment.

"Well, we'll cross that bridge when we come to it." She said, arriving at the building that contained Alater's appartment.  They were silent as they drew up the turbolift. Saphira almost feeling shy that she had actually followed him. Then again, she didn't really know anyone else in the squad and Alater knew her like a mechanic knew the ins and outs of a pod racer.

"I stil don't see why you can afford -"  Saphira started as she rubbed her arms. They had approached the door and she felt only the Barabels massive presence behind her. More like a ticking timebom as the door opened and she went in. Eyes adjusting she was barly in when  a clawed arm went around her front and pinned her to his chest.

"Little One..." He cooed as Saphira instently twisted  and kicked at his legs. It didn't do anything as Alater merly  chuckled and pushed her away. A warning if anything as  she knew he was lifting up his sleeve and pressing the button to the device he had.  Saphira felt the pain wash over her. As if she was feeling it. For some reason he wished to do it in the dark and quickly before her eyesite could adjust.

"I'm not a child Lizard brain." Saph huffed as the lights went on. Her mouth grew dry as she scanend him from head to toe. Knowing that the transformation had to hurt like hell.

"I. .never said you were Little One. But I have my secrets as you have yours.."  He moved forward, placing a hand on her shoulder as he smiled before giving her a grin. Saph saw the  sharpend humanized teeth  and  held her tongue. Thinking back to what he had said but moments earlier.

"It's just all this, the device, you, I'm apprehensive on how it will affect the squad, and our careers."

Mentally she smiled and relaxed as she  turned and felt Alater also seem to relax.

"Nothing will change Alater.." She whispered and looked up at him. His own eyes seemed to darken somewhat. As if he was still deep in thought of what to do.

"You don't know that."

"Yes. I do.. No matter what happens I will stay by your side as the comrads that we are."

His grip tightened  on her shoulder as he led her to what looked like a specific type of couch. They sat down, and Saphira was suprised to se how soft and comfertable it was. Taking her hand and running iit over the semi-rough fabric before Alater grabed her hand. Forcing her  to look up into his eyes.

"Your more then a comrad sometimes.. Saph..."

That device is definatly rubbing off on him.. I just hope  others don't know about it. It would be dangerous if the enemy had it.

She thought as  her mind tried to grasp what he was trying to tell her. The VE was their whole lives and yet, even after all the hells they had both been though...

"I am? Alater.. I.. " He cut her off.

"I got this device for you.."  Alater started. It seemed he had a hard time trying to spell out what he was trying to say. "I will use it for the VE if I have to. .But.. I.. I can't  sit back anymore...."

Without even waiting for her permission Alater leaned in and gave her a hug. Glade that he had managed to  get her to come up to talk. Even more so being in the same squad.

I've come a long way.

Alater thought as he embraced her. Waiting for the twi'lek to strike out as he rememberd she didn't like to normaly be hugged. To him, it would be worth it. If only to heal himself more. When she didn;t pull back, it slightly suprised him. They had been comrades for a long time, as well as had fought to try and kill each other. Each time she  suprised him. Only making it  more a struggle to let her go and push him into not presuing anything else.

"Alater. I..."

She broke into his thoughts as he lifted his head back to gaze into her eyes. Seeing the fire that was there as she sucked in deep breaths of air.

"You don't have to say anything..." He started. Saph smiled and hugged him back. Happy to see that he was becomming with more humanity and healing his own wounds. Withut even knowing it.. hers were healing as well!

----------------------------------------------------

An annoying buzzer went off early the next morning. Alater groaned and  blinked back his eye. Feeling a warm mass next to him he turned and smiled to see Saphira starting to wake up.  He had never felt so..

Complete

He thought as he streached and felt his muscles streach as he pulled the blankets off and stood. Still in is human form he  lumbered to his data pad and shut the sound off. A light blinking telling him it was 0400 and that Tanus had sent a messge telling him he needed to be  ready in about two hours.

"Can you turn that noise off?" Came the annoyed voice from the bed. Saph  sat up and  covered her ears. "That's a bit too loud for me..."

Alater arched an eyebrow and then remembered that a twi'leks hearing was more sensative to higher pitches of sound. He knew she could  ignore most, but waking up to it she was more alert  to other thigns then her hearing.

"Sorry.."

He muttered as the sound stopped. Turning on a light he  went over to the door where a duffel was at as well as the uniform that saph would need.

"Alater? How -"

"You left your key in your pocket and I knew you wouldn't have been able to get your things in time this morning.."

He could feel her anger rising and he loved it as she struted over and grabbed her clothed. Lek twitching as she  checked the pockets of her current ware and didn't feel her keycard.

"I guess we'll be walking together then eh?" Alater replied as a pillow was tossed into the back of his head and the bathroom shut.  Her actions was enough that he grinned and started to get himself ready as the sounds of the shower started.

Talstorin arrived back at his new room alone, quiet.  This was to be his first mission in a long time and yet he felt rather apathetic.  Missions would be different now.  He didn’t know anyone in the squad.  There were a few familiar faces here and there but even when he remembered their names, they were distant acquaintances at most.  Tanus… He had recalled the name from somewhere.  The squad leader’s face even seemed familiar but he found nothing out of it.  Kanderin had been made squad leader of Wraiths from what he heard, and Arnaut ascended.  Snipes was now Raiders squad leader as well.

“Che,” Talstorin said crankily as he retrieved a comlink from his right pocket and tossed it on the bed.  It landed softly, bouncing up only a small distance before gravity dragged it back down.  Gently, he thought, yet forcefully.   The trooper wiped the thoughts from his mind.  It certainly wasn’t good to dwell on the past, not in life and certainly not in the storm trooper corps.  To evade legal actions for “attempted murder” that involved the “daughter” of a well off, moderately powerful family, he was branded “mentally unstable.”

“It’s this or worse,” they had told him.  He supposed they were right.  They had even cured him of his “mental sickness.”  It was a load of bull of course, though judgment had told him it was better that he didn’t say it in public.  No, treatment didn’t help.  Pills didn’t help.  The past stuck to him like a shirt on a sweaty humid day.  Perhaps it would always be stuck to him.  Everything seemed so recent and so…

Pop!  The sound zoomed around in the room before disappearing as soon as it had appeared.  The can of soda began to fizz and Talstorin quickly put his mouth to the hole, indulging himself in the sugary goodness.  A gulp followed and after that, he walked to the other side of the bed, to the nightstand.  Pulling open the drawer, he picked up a small container that’s cap popped open easily.  Pills fell out as Talstorin tipped the container with his right hand, catching the contents in his left palm.  Putting two in his mouth and the rest back in the container, the man took another sip of his drink.  He swallowed, letting the pills travel down before chugging the rest of the soda.

Where was he?  Everything seemed so recent and so… fresh.  Like tattoos on his brain.

The mission didn’t help.  It was all too Wraith like.  Actually, now that Wraiths were mounted troopers, he really couldn’t say that anymore.  That was the one reason why he didn’t mind not returning to his old squad.  Dewbacks and other mounts?  Ridiculous.  On the bright side, he was used to this stuff and what better way to refresh his memory and service in the corps than with something he had done for the longest time.

He diverted his eyes to the shining silver-colored object at the corner of his room, isolated from everything else.  He didn’t know what to believe these days.  The pale fingers of his right hand spidered their way along the headboard of his bed as Talstorin looked around, unsure of what to do.  There was usually packing but he had just arrived and well, packing was already done.  Rather, that was simply a better way to say the unpacking never got done.

The walls of the room were a dull white.  Not pure white, a dull white.  They were un-dirtied and clean and yet, they didn’t have the luster that belonged to pure whiteness.  He hadn’t minded it back in the day but they had grown to be unnervingly unbearable.  The sad thing was, he had only been in the room for a few hours.

He closed his eyes, taking a deep breath.  The glint of silver caught his attention again and he slowly walked back to the sword.  He lifted it by the hilt, effortlessly almost.  It was funny.  During the time before he last “used” the sword and the time he was dragged off and away from the corps, he recalled it being a lot heavier than usual.  Perhaps it was the stress and physical fatigue but some days, he had needed two hands to lift it.  Yet, here it was.  It rested perpendicular to the wall, flat, amazingly thin like a stiff sheet of paper.  It was light as air.  Talstorin frowned.  He should’ve discarded it by now.  It was a reminder of his past self.  Coming up with an excuse for keeping it was easy.  Cortosis coated phrik.  Single handedly, that sword was worth more than three times anything else he owned.  In a life of no attachments, no emotions and constant movement, that sword was the closest thing he had to stability.  It was sad.

Maybe he wasn’t fit for army life.  He frowned once more, still deep in thought, not noticing the uncomforting rigidity of the footboard of his bed on which he sat on.  There was no room for such weakness in his life anymore.  He had resolved to start a new self, one away from Sera and from the enslaving obsessions of a simple infatuation.  That’s what he called it now.  Yet deep down, he noticed that the harder he tried to leave everything behind, the faster things chased up to him.  He was thinking too much, he said to himself, dismissing the topic and breaking the chain of thought.  Things in life were meant to be simple and he finally had a chance to live normally.

Screw the past

Deciding it was better to take a walk, he half-sulked out of his room when he decided he might as well get there early anyways.  Talstorin turned back and grabbed a small pack that had rested atop his other baggage.  There wasn’t much in there, he learned to travel lightly.  There wasn’t much to bring anyways; most of his possessions had been confiscated prior to his release.  It was odd how certain policies worked.  A DC-15 and couple of combat knives would have to suffice for the mission.  It was only urban combat anyways, what more could he possibly need?

          --------------

The weather was a monotonous thing that day.  Nothing special.  Nothing eventful.  Just a sky.  As he walked, he kept feeling the back of his hair.  Short hair was required where he was treated and it wasn’t something he was used to.  On the other hand, Talstorin couldn’t really complain.  He admitted, he looked nice with shorter hair.  There were a few times he caught himself thinking it and he chuckled.  It was amazing how much you can go through in a life time and still be shallow.  It didn’t hurt to care about your appearance anyways.  Not that it mattered how you looked, not among masked enforcers of the Vast Empire’s might nor among a group of men that you worked with.  As expected, Talstorin was the first one there.  “Bunch of lazy bums,” he sighed, finding a wall to lean on.  Hopefully, he wasn’t TOO early.

We find darkness...

Tank drove his Strikebreaker riot control vehicle out of the Ebon Shyrack, coming to a stop when he was a couple meters clear of the ramp.  He would have loved to fly his own ship but orders on the matter were crystal clear.  Personally he felt the 'regular' pilots didn't like missing out on the fun.

Unlike most of the Vast Army he had no apartment, condo or house; the Ebon Shyrack was his home.  Its solidly built, comfortable, and has some nice non-standard modifications.  First was overhauling the sublight engines.  The Ebon Shyrack was now as fast as a TIE/ln starfighter and just as maneuverable!  And though it was a challenge that took forever to finish, he upgraded the class 1 hyperdrive to a class 0.8; even the backup was now class 8 instead of class 10.

With a sigh he said goodbye to Rex, Hex and the other droids.  Bringing them would have been nice, but their energy signatures could give away the squad's presence at a bad time.  Sealing the hatch he entered the code that would keep his home safe till he returned to Tadath.

Casting a brief glance at his other vehicles covered with tarps, he marched back to the Strikebreaker.  Driving to the lauchpad he looked forward to seeing his former instruictor again.  Sergeant Striker's lessons were brutal, but what he learned had saved his life many times over.

Maybe after this mission, Sergeant Striker can help me squeeze more speed out of the Strikebreaker the stormtrooper mused.  Scuttlebut around the army garage was Saphira was one hell of a vehicle crewman.  Tank wondered if Lance Corporal Tnepres had decided on his speciality yet...

In any event the troopers should still have some time before they leave Tadath.  It had been ages since he'd seen Alater.  he wondered what his former ASL had been up to.  Arriving at the hangar, Tank parked the Strikebreaker in the Sentinel that would take them to Adumar.  Imagine that; a whole culture that idolizes pilots...

Orobos woke empty bottle in hand. He hadn't remembered drinking the night before. Then it came back to him. Being slammed to the floor mat repeatedly. He remembered getting the guy a few times but Orobos was sure he probably wasn't as sore as he was right now. Lifting himself from the bed he was happy to find that the bruising wasn't bad. He put his hands on his head. The fur on his back was matted with blood. He felt the large cut on the top of his head where he'd been hit.

That'll leave a mark.

He checked the time. Good he had nearly an hour before he was expected to be at the shuttle thought he wanted to be there around five minutes before just in case. He moved towards the small bathroom running the cold tap which wasn't particularly cold in this case he washed the dried blood out of his hair. Then grabbing his belt he made for the armoury.

Walking down the corridors he stood up straight and lifted his shoulders out. He walked through the billowing crowds which seemed to part In front of him. It was good for getting around but for making friends his size wasn't helpful then. He saw over the crowds walking in the opposite direction the new addition to there squad Saphira.

Walking with her was a large man. Taller then Orobos. He was massive for a human. Orobos had never seen the man before thought when he glanced up at him he thought he'd recognised something. There was something about his eyes he found so familiar. Dis-regarding the thought he continued on nodding in acknowledgment as he past the pair.

Orobos moved round the corner and through the crowds towards the armoury. Checking the ancient time-piece he'd acquired it showed that there was still forty minutes for him to reach the shuttle. He walked into the armoury showing ID to the guard. He grabbed his converted shocktrooper armour he headed over to the weapons cache. He picked up the heavy assault rifle, some grenades, a DC-15 pistol and his vibro-axe which hadn't seen much action in a while. Checking all of his equipment out he carried it in a duffle bag out of the armoury and headed towards the docks.

****************************

once he arrived there he moved to the shuttle sitting with its rear hatch open, almost welcoming after the long time of nothing but routine. Walking in Orobos found a few members of the squad sitting inside already. There was the other new member of there squad. He struggled to remember his name. In fact orobos was sure he hadn't even been told his name. He turned and stowed his equipment above and sat himself down.

Ready to go well ahead of schedule, Tank killed some time fighting the battle droids in the gym.  He'd taken a few bruises but nothing serious.  He was satisfied when his combatants were in a pile, inoperable.  The techs will have fun sorting out that mess the stormtrooper mused as he headed for the firing range.

The IvP-18 S-FOX Machine pistols were a recent addition the the Squad's equipment and admitedly Tank's experience with slugthrowers of any kind was limited.  Although he had some use of basic pistols on a couple of missions, the IvP-18 S-FOX Machine pistols were a lot more sophisticated.  And while the kickback may be similar to an E-11 on full-auto it isn't the same.

Arriving at the firing range Tank checked in and donned the protective gear.  I better be competant with this weapon before my life, or the lives of my squadmates, depend on it...  With that thought he squeezed off a few practice rounds, getting a feel for the weapon.  Eventually he moved on to experimenting with different firing rates, seeing just what the pistol was capable of and how it hadled...

After sitting through the meeting, Gates hummed, hefting a heavy backpack, a plastoid block that was laser resistant. In it were a dozen rockets, a couple dozen clips for his rifles, rations and medpacs. He carried his 500 Riot blaster in his hands, his PLX slung over his shoulder, and his E-11 and machine pistol on his hips. He had a few grenades and clips in his belt.

He walked through a few semi-empty halls, and spotted the shuttle. He grinned, taking off his helmet and breathing in the fresh air from outside of the base, then got into the shuttle.

He could see that the Stormbreaker was already on board, and therefore, Tank had been as well. He stuck his heavy pack under one of the seats, and set his helmet on the seat as well. He looked around; Orobos and one of the new soldiers, Tnerpres was here.

Gates set the rest of his weapons down, then dug through his pack for a lighter and a cigarette. "Smoke?"

Tanus nearly dropped his scotch. Okay I either need to lay off the liquor, or I’m finally going crazy. Did Alater really just…? He shook his head as he poured himself another small glass of scotch; he needed it now it seemed. Tanus sat down and looked at his datapad for any confirmation from Kami; of course there was nothing. This did not surprise Tanus much. He took a look over at the chrono hanging on the wall; it was starting to get late. Tanus downed what was left in his glass and walked into his room, shutting off all of the lights in his rooms before moving to his bed. He pulled off his shirt and tossed it across the room before sitting on his bed, staring out the window. Just as he got up to open the window, his datapad started to ring. Tanus knew it could only be Kami. He walked over to his desk and gave his screen a look; sure enough, he was right.

“Evening Kami. I take it you have so information for me now?”

There was a ruffling of papers. “Yes I do Tanus. You’ll be meeting up with Soro Vanga on the outskirts of Adumar’s capital. It’ll be a night drop, so hopefully you won’t be detected. If you are, shoot to kill. Leave no witnesses. When you eventually get in there and settled, contact me any way you can so I know how you’re doing. Good luck Tanus.”

The line went dead after that. Tanus sighed as he put his datapad down ad massaged his temples. It was going to be a long day tomorrow.

--- --- --- --- ---

Tanus woke up at 5:30 as he usually did and went straight to his weapons locker. It was a big day for Blackjack squad. He grabbed his two favorite weapons: his modified DC-15 and his Samurai Edge with silencer. He packed both into a duffel bag and sent out a mass message to all of Blackjack’s squad members:

Ready room in twenty minutes.

Tanus was there within five, and was pleased to see a good portion of the squad there as well. He set down his gear and waited for the others. When everyone was there, he started his speech.

“Glad to see you all made it. Now, when last I left you, I had no info other than what the situation was on planet as well as what the political rundown was. Well, now I actually know what we’re doing. We’ll be landing outside of Adumar’s capital city. We won’t be wearing any of our gear; that will all be packed in the Sentinel we’ll be taking. When we touch down, we’ll meet up with a man named Soro Vanga. He appears to be the leader of the revolutionaries and seems to have a good idea of what to do next. For the moment, he’s in command, but you will still all report directly to me. Upon touching down, I imagine we’ll be doing some scouting out of the area before we make any major strikes. Beyond that, I don’t have a lot to tell you boys. Head to the shuttle and rest up. It’s an eight hour flight, so sleep easy.”

Tanus lead the squad to the Sentinel where everything was already loaded and accounted for. Tanus took his seat near the pilot and the others fanned out into their groups. He looked back towards Alater and an uneasy feeling settled in his gut. He shook it off ordered the pilot to prepare for debark. Within minutes, Blackjack was in the void, trailing stars till they saw lines.

OOC:
Okay, so we're not doing the eight hours of action on the shuttle. Anyone can land us; don't have a preference. When you do, just have us meet our contact and start to scout the area.

Gates, once he was on the shuttle and it had taken off, removed his shock trooper armor, as per orders. "No armor is risky, boss. They could easily kill us with a slug."

"Better than being mobbed by dozens of military."

"I see, sir." he finished removing his armor, stacking it into a locker and locking it. He kept his backpack out, though; he painted it urban camo. His comrades did the same.

A few of the soldiers smoked; a few slept; a few talked quietly. Some finished with gear prep; this went on for the next 8 hours.

Eventually, they dropped from hyperspace. "Sergeant, BlackJack, we are dropping into the Adumar system. ETA for landing is 20 minutes."

Tanus nodded, shut off the intercomm. Gates rubbed his leg to get the circulation going again; it had fallen asleep.

He stood, grabbing his weapons from where he'd placed them, and slung his PLX over his shoulder, his E-11 and pistol at his side, and his 500 in his hands. He placed the backpack on, too.

The planet Adumar was dark; nothing like what Coruscant was rumored to be like. There was no real megalopolis there, just a hive of blood-thirsty men and women who dueled to the death over tiny things like spilled caf.

Gates racked his charging handle back. The loud noise interrupted several other's thoughts. "Sorry," he grinned, grabbing a rung to hold on to.

The others also stood and grabbed weapons. The comm crackled to life again; "ETA 30 seconds."

Tanus moved to the point position. "Touchdown!" announced the pilot, opening the ramp.

The Black Jacks carefully and quietly left the ship, which closed the ramp and accelerated back into space, waiting until the rest of its cargo was needed.

"I feel naked without my armor," Gates muttered into the tiny ear-bud comm receiver-transmitter comlinks- hands free. "But these comlinks are cool."

"Gates, can it. We're not in armor, someone might hear you, and then we'll have to slot 'em," Tanus muttered; he had his silenced Samurai Edge out, ready to kill anyone who spotted them.

They quietly advanced through the suburbs for a couple minutes.

"Contact!" Tanus hissed, and  the BlackJacks spread out among the walls.

Gates took cover behind a person's fence. Tanus was on the same property, ready to leap over and subdue the Adumari if it became necessary.

Just as Gates was lining up for a shot in case Tanus couldn't handle him- a sensible precaution, as it insured through redundancy- Tanus stood and waved. "What the hell?" Gates thought. "Does he want to- oh."

The man was their contact, one Soro Vanga.

Tank was sleeping fitfully in the Strikebreaker.  He was alone but had left the hatch open to conserve the vehicle's power.  As he tossed and turned he made no noise.

Gates racked his charging handle back. The loud noise interrupted several other's thoughts. "Sorry," he grinned, grabbing a rung to hold on to.

The noise of Gates' weapon charging echoed in the confines of the shuttle, waking Tank fully alert and ready to fight.  What the?!?  Where?  The Strikebreaker.  Still in transit.  The stormtrooper heard the pilot's announcement and shook his head to clear the rest of the cobwebs, remnants of the bizarre dream.

Rechecking his gear he tried to forget the disturbing tableau; it had nothing to do with the mission.  Distractions get you killed.  Fininished, he rejoined the Squad as they readied to disembark.

Tank coasted the Strikebreaker out of the shuttle and parked it, then gates helped him cover it with camo netting.  They didn't have long to wait.  Gates nearly slotted a mook when Tanus stopped him; The man was their contact, one Soro Vanga.

After verifying code words for Tanus, mister Vanga outlined the plan...

Saphira wasn't too happy about the idea of not wearing her armor. She like some of the others felt naked without it. To her,  it compared to a married couple that had their wedding bands and was told not to wear them for something. Her thoughts were inturpted when  Tanus broke into her thoughts.

"Contact!" Tanus hissed, and  the BlackJacks spread out among the walls.

It was always the training that kicked in. Though Saph was probably mor elikly to go into a fight with a broad smile. She watched as one of their own nearly took out their contact. Raising an eyebrow she stood back and figured a few people were a little edgy.

I would be a little too.. But I would think this squad needs some downtime with a few sims

She thought as she watched Tanus check around to see there was no one else to be seen. Even contacts could be followed or be a trap for the team. Either way the twi'lek kept her hearing streached out as the plan was told. She wasn't paying to much attention to him, knowign that someone would tell her the exactness.

Soro Vanga had restored an old military bunker and stocked it with everything we should need and then some.  It will be our home for most, if not all of our stay on Adumar.

As the squad made their way to the abandoned bunker, Saphira asked about the Strikebreaker.  Tank answered "It was love at first mission!"  Pride was evident in the Stormtrooper's voice.  "Weapons and armor on par with the big Walkers.  How can you not love that?"

"True" was Saph's reply.  "But that's not the whole story is it?"

Gates chuckled but remained silent.  Tnepres waited to hear the rest of the story.  Tank continued "All hell had broken loose on Balmorra.  It was a tough job; the rioters were far too well equiped.  We won but not without tanking more than our fair shareof injuries; the Strikebreaker was no exception.

"When we got back to Tadath the Quartermaster had a fit.  I'd been saving my credits for a starfighter, but slammed them down on the Quartermaster's desk instead.  Bought and paid for I fixed up this bad boy myself.  It was already faster than AT-AT walkers, but now it can keep up with scout walkers like the AT-ST!"

"Impressive.  Maybe when we get the chance, I can get under the hood.  See if I can help fine-tune your work?" Saphira queried.

Tank leapt at the chance "Sergeant Striker, I would be honored!  Though it looks like we'll have to wait a bit; we're here."

Soro typed a code on his datapad and the bunker's garage blast doors opened.  Tank drove inside and Soro closed and locked the blast doors.  ASL Gates was eager to see what demolitions and munitions we had to play with...

Gates was inspecting the pins on a quartet of frags when the Soro guy came up to him.

"Do you mind if I ask who you are?" the contact asked through a heavy Adumari accent, the almost simple, uncivilized lisp that was actually somewhat pleasant to the ear, once you understood it.

Gates looked up. "Yea, I'm the one with the innocent expression and the heavy weapons. And the mischievous personality."

Orobos walked in, hands empty, having finished setting up the proximity sensors. "Catch!" said Gates, tossing a det and explosive over to the combat engineer.

"Shit! What the-" Orobos cursed again.

"Don't worry, I wouldn't toss you live ordnance unless the situation warranted it. And I'm sure you like this particular toy."

Orobos inspected the explosives; high-yield, directional; you could stand right behind them and set them off and you'd suffer no worse an injury then perhaps dust in you eyes.

"You've got the sensors up?" Gates asked.

"Yeah, they're up, I've wired them to the surveillance room."

"Great, here, take a look at the rest of the bombs, I've inspected most of 'em and you might find something else you like."

Orobos nodded, and Gates moved to the second wing of the bunker complex. He knocked on Tanus' door. "Come in," said the SL.

"Sir, Orobos has set up the sensors and cameras; Tank, Saphira, and Tnerpres are inspecting the StrikeBreaker and the rest of the gear, which got dropped off here just a few minutes ago. I'm on my way to monitor the security feeds."

"Excellent- where've we got cameras?"

"360 view around the bunker, pressure and movement sensors on the front a back walls, near the two entrances; sensors on the roof, and two cameras on the roof as well."

Tanus nodded, then looked back down at the papers that he had been inspecting; they looked like blueprints, orders, and maps of the city. With another salute, the soldier continued down the hall to his first night of caf, peering at basically unchanging views, and logging anomalies. And he actually liked it; he could focus on the views but also think about other things as well. It got him caught up on his thinking time; between combat, training, retraining, and general goofing around, there wasn't much time for thinking.

Saphira cocked her head to the side and gave a toothy grin. it was one of the only times she was actually relaxed for even a moment. It was the grease monkey in her that made it all possible when she wasn't in training or on a mission. Only once they  arrived would she  get the chance to see what the thing could do. It was all eyecandy in her mind as they arrived and jumped out. Saphira went straight to the  StrikerBreaker and didn't even notice that Tanus had slipped away to deal with his head of business.

"What else can she do?" Saphira asked after she figured out how to pop the hood so to speak. Her eyes sparkled likea child  entering the cand store.

No sense in not making sure it's up to par...

"Well Dependign on what kind of Starfighter you get.. I could tweek that too so you have more sheilding and speed..."

Saph mentioned to Tank from the earlier conversation. She looked over her shoulder to see Tank's jaw drop.

"Really? I .. I mean.. wow.. Thanks! I woul dlove  that!!!"

"Actually, I have a Shuttle Pod now.  It's a short-range fighter and too small to fit a hyperdrive.  Honestly, I'd love to see what you can do with her.  Though currently I'm saving for a ship large enough to hold all my craft."

"How many ships do you have, anyway?"

"The ISP-6 and the Ebon Shyrack are the only true ships I own; the LAAT gunships can maneuver in space but they're generally categorized as airspeeder transports as that's their primary role.  In addition to the LAAT/i and LAAT/c I have a Reconnaissance Troop Transporter, the Strikebreaker, the 3-2-XR Speeder Bike you already know about, an INT-4 Interceptor,
Dante's Inferno (an extensively hot-rodded ISP 'Swamp Speeder'), a Storm Skimmer Patrol Sled, a TX-130S Assault Repulsortank, 1-L Light Repulsortank, 1-M Medium Repulsortank and lastly a 1-H Heavy Repulsortank."

"Wow.  You really love your vehicles, don't you?"

"Guilty as charged!  So far i've been keeping them parked on land nobody owns, under tarps.  Now, you wanted to know more about the Strikebreaker.  Optimally it would be crewed by two drivers and seven gunners."

"But there are just the seven of us in BlackJack."

Tank smiles and continues "That's the real beauty of the Strikebreaker.  Each driver can control any unmanned weapon on the vehicle.  Additionally, the Turreted Repeating Blasters can be fire-linked for more accuracy or for more damage.  The Medium Laser Cannons are mounted two on each flank; these can also be fire-linked.  The Turreted Grenade Mortar can take most any type of grenade; gas grenades, plasma grenades, stun or frag, even thermal detonators."

Saphira was as giddy as a kid in a candy store.  "Impressive.  Is this reinforced grille for ramming other vehicles?"

"That's the Stun Barricade; it's stun-charge hits nearly as hard as getting rammed by the Strikebreaker.  Though it can get quite messy at times.  After the last mission, I had to disentangle a rodian's arm from the barricade.  Don't ask about the rest of him; I don't know and don't want to."

"Oh"

"Naturally, I would really love to amp up the speed, but if we can raise the altitude range while we're at it it could really come in handy."

With a feral grin "Let's get started shall we?" Spahira invited as she and Tank got to work.  Meanwhile Garryll and the rest of the squad finished taking stock of the gear we had to work with, as Tanus worked the kinks out of Soro's plans...

Orobos chuckled as Garryll turned away from throwing the explosives. He walked outside the bunker from they were occupying out into the night. The air was cool and crisp and his breath misted in front of his eyes. It must've been near the start of winter as there was a layer of leaves which were shriveled up on the ground.

They crunched underfoot as he made his way around the perimeter. Between and in front of the cameras ,he set up for a full view 360 degrees around the bunker with night vision settings, he set the directional charges. Then turning he retraced his steps with a long coil of wire which was spray painted brown he had it running close enough to the perimeter that it would be a sure kill to anyone who disturbed the wire.Walking back inside he informed Tanus of the explosives which he marked on the map.

"Just tread lightly," was the response he got from the preoccupied squad leader.

Funny Orobos thought, [i] in the middle of enemy territory with a near to impossible task given to them, not that it was impossible but expected to be done in a week, and he could still crack a joke.

Walking around orobos looked for a place to sleep. He ound a rather large alcove about four feet above the ground and a lot larger then him. It looked like it was a kind of ammo storage area. He pushed his equipment into the alcove and moved on past a doorway where he heard laughter from.Followed by a loud crash. Passing the door he glanced inside to find two heads poking out of a tangle of pipes and gears. They looked at him a laughed. Deciding he didn't really want to know Orobos closed the door. All he knew is if that vehicle wasn't back together again there was going to be problems.

After about half and hour, the other BlackJacks reported all of their gear intact and stashed in several armories and small rooms. The contact left another quarter hour after that, and the other soldiers turned in one at a time.

At about 3AM local, Tanus poked his head into the surveillance room.

"You're still up?" asked the SL, rubbing at his eyes.

"Evidently, sir," Gates replied, rubbing sore muscles.

"Go to bed, set the proximity alerts."

"Yessir," Gates nodded, put their survelliance equipment on standby and the proximity sensors to full, wired the connection to his comlink and datapad, and went to his room.

--Dawn (6:27 AM Local Time)--

Gates woke, and rolled out of bed, a fell to the floor. He rubbed his head. "I hate falling dreams."

He shuffled off towards the refresher and cleaned up, donning a variation of the local dress.

Garryll picked the DC-15s from his bedside table, slid a clip into it, set the safety on, and slid it into his holster inside his jacket. It, through the window, looked rather dreary, rainy day. He sighed.

The BlackJack walked out into the main room of the bunker complex; no one else was awake yet. He grabbed a few meal bars from their stock, a cup of caf, and continued towards the surveillance room.

Halfway there, he heard a knock at the back door - the one door with no mines or other dangerous, intruder-stopping ordanance, though, if the door was opened from the outside without the correct code in 2 tries, it would spray a fine paralysis mist.

Gates set his caf down, but opened one of his meal bars, and bit into it. He leaned over to check the screen that revealed what was outside.

Vanga stood outside, nervously looking behind him and clutching a bag.

Gates let a hand stray towards his pistol as he opened the door. The contact, a small, almost comically round man, bustled in.

"Phew, these are heavy. Glad ya let me in."

The trooper smiled, picked up the bag, and set it on the table. "Caf?" he asked, retrieving a bomb sensor from a cabinet.

"No thanks, I'm allergic."

"Ahh, I see." he took a sip and chomped down the last of his meal bar. He opened another, at the same time removing some objects from the burlap bag.

"I was waitn' to get one of these!" Gates crowed, setting a blastsword, the first of about a dozen, from the bag.

He ran the sensor over the weapon; there was nothing wrong with it.

"My bosses decided you need to blend in with the populace better. Your accents are hardly obvious, but not invisible, and you may leave a trail- they decided at least, if you need to kill someone you could use these."

"Thanks Vanga," Gates smiled, finished another bar, and threw the trash out. He settled down to enjoy his caf and wait for the rest of his squadmates.

The Stormtroopers gradually wandered into the operations center of the old bunker.  The resident grease-monkeys (Saph & Tank) were liberally splattered with grease, oil, various other machine-fluids and sweat.  Despite looking as abused as their punished mechanics' overalls, the gearheads were looking most pleased with themselves.

Tanus cleared his throat before addressing the troops.  "Sergeant Striker, as you and Tank have been overhauling the squad vehicle, perhaps you would like to report first?"

Saphira stepped forward as she spoke, "We raised the Strikebreaker's flight ceiling and speed.  We also reinforced both the hull integrety and armor plate by nearly thirty percent.  Tank has the performance specs." she finioshes, nodding to the Lance Corporal.

Tank reins in his joy just a tad as he explains "When issued to us the Strikebreaker had a standard cruising speed of 28 kmh and an all-out maximum of 80 kmh.  BlackJack Zero's cruising speed is 55 kmh with an all-out maximum of 160 kmh.  The altitude range was raised from thirty meters to seventy.  Furthermore we've signifigantly improved maneuverability; it handles like a dream.  Sergeant Solvona, you may want to take him for a spin to get a feel for it.  The Adumari maneuvering flaps realy make a difference."

"I see..." the SL answered, pleased with the good news.

Saph concludes "We were going to work on the weapons systems but we would need more time."

"Still, great job, both of you.  Now lets hear from the rest of the squad and get to business.  Who's next?"  he said and waited to see who would step up....

The early-morning meeting had begun with a few more of the squad trickling in the next hour, and eventually, all arrived by 8:00 AM local.

Tank and Saphira, the duo who had been working on the StrikeBreaker, reported huge success in the inner workings of the machine. They had increased most aspects of the vehicle, but not its weapons, lacking sufficient time to finish.

They stepped back; a few notes were jotted down by all present. Gates took a sip of caf.

He stepped up next. "Boss, Vanga here was nice enough to get us some civvy clothes, as well as a few other, nicer gifts."

"Continue." Tanus ordered.

"Well, he got us some 'legal' blasters and a dozen or so blastswords."

"The blastswords?" came from someone else.

"Yea, these things; they are like a sword, but they can be used like a blaster if the tip touches something."

He demonstrated on a combat dummy he had dragged in earlier.

A flourish-
A stab-
A burst of light-

And there was the dummy, largely on fire and with a pretty big hole through it, with blaster damage all around.

There was applause. "And the Adumari use these in their all-to-often duels to the death. But, on the bright side, we'll blend better! Just don't piss anyone off."

The ASL retired to his seat, and Tanus stepped up to give his briefing.

"Ahem. We are tasked with several objectives for this mission; I'm sending you guys the objectives now."

He hit a button on his datapad.

Gates looked at his- a message! "Wow, that was wicked fast! Holy crap! Do it again!" Gates joked.

Several of the others laughed, then consulted their 'pads.

Okay boys and girls, this one's a toughie. Adumari resistance fighters have requested Vast Empire support in their goals, and are friendly towards us. I.e, they're willing to join, negotiate, or at least trade with us, but that's not my problem, that's someone else's. Here are your objectives:
[*]Topple the dictator government
[*]Raid military targets
[*]Break the back of the government forces
[*]Establish guerrillas government officials
[*]Set up VE-Adumari arms trade
[*]Assist Resistance in miscellaneous ways

You've only a week to do this, BlackJacks. Get to it.
/Message Ends/

"Tanus, when are they gonna give us a target that doesn't sound like suicide?" sighed Gates theatrically, fiddling with his sidearm.

"When you get promoted, Gates."

Gates looked around. "Hey, lookit!"

The SL dragged a hand over his face at the antics of his rather immature assistant. "I meant when you grow some maturity, soldier!"

"Yessir, yezzir, yes sir!" Gates lept up. "The Sergeant only wishes to fulfill his Squad Leader's most desperate and insane plans to the best of  his ability, regardless of danger to life or limb." He struck an overly-heroic pose.

Tanus sighed.

After reports were done Tanus ordered everyone to practice with the blastswords.  Detween duels Tank tinkered with the unusual weapons, adding a stun setting to the standard on/off options.

Tank didn't know who started it but now most of the squad (but not Tanus nor Alater) was in a blassword free-for-all.  Saphira fooled Tank with two faints and a riposte, dropping the stunned trooper to the floor.

Tnepres tried to capitalize on Saphira's move but she was ready for he and he fell onto Tank.  Garryll was distracted by the suddeness of Saphira's attack and was next to fall; struck by Orobos' blastsword.

It took a couple of blows before Orobos fell to Saphira's skill & tenacity.  From the bottom of the pile Tank gasped out "Get'em off!  Get'em off!"

Tanus merely shook his head as Alater hissed his laughter...

Orobos sat down to rest after there practicing. It hadn't gone half as bad as he'd thought it would have when the idea was brought up to pass the time. most of the squad being experts in the marshal arts which were practiced on their individual planets of origin. He'd even managed to pick a few tips up from a few of his squadmates who had noticed the flaws in his style of combat.

They were all sitting around chatting and laughing with a good air around the room. Tanus walked back inside with a sort of urgent authority that got all there attentions.

"We've just received some information from the many spies and agents the rebellion has placed in the government. They have marked out specific ammo dumps and strategically military bases we are to target and destroy if they are to have any hope in this plan succeeding."

At this Vanga coughed. Tanus ignored this and went back to his briefing.

"The list of military bases includes a large civilian house. This acts as the headquarters of the governmental secret police. We take these guys out and the government will lose vital spies and assassins. Alright people you have one hour lets get ready."

Tanus walked out of the large room again. Thry all jumped up and headed to get there equipment. In other abandoned bunkers and houses such as these there were teams of rebels preparing for the coup of the government. With the aid of the stormtroopers it would make there storm of the Parliament easier.

Orobos grabbed a cloak and belt. The cloak was black with some dark camo over it. He grabbed his heavy blaster rifle and the vibro-axe. He had two grenades on his belt as well as his demolition pack. When he was sure he was kitted out with the essentials he walked back in to find most of the squad assembled.

"Will I go get the strikbreaker warmed up?" Tank said hopefully a gleam in his eye.

"No we'll be moving to the first ammunition dump in a civilian vehicle as to keep the element surprise. After the first ammunition dump has been destroyed we'll have members of the rebellion bring it up to support the rest of our attacks on our targets."

The squad now kitted out moved out of the bunker and followed Tanus to the civilian vehicle waiting to pick them up.

OOC: I'm going to group Alater, Saphira, and Tnepres all in one little NPC-ish group. A couple two-man fireteams for the sabotage.

Gates stored a few weapons in the Strikebreaker's weapons hold; a sniper, extra ammo, grenades, NVG, a few rifles, SMGs, silencers.

Tanus gave them last minute-briefings as they clambered into the pair of nondescript vehicles.

"Remember, this is a raid, not a battle. Cause terror, shoot a whole lot, use a bunch of explosives. Like that last op where we raided the Embassy."

Gates remembered that. He grinned beneath his shooter's glasses. His armament included his PLX rocket launcher, a pair of silenced pistols, and an SMG. Nothing too complicated, just get the job done.

"We'll be operating in two-man fireteams, except for Saph, Alater, and Tnepres; you will all be team Charlie, I'll head Alpha, and Gates, you've got Bravo."

The lizard and the woman nodded. The lance nodded stiffly.

Gates left Tanus to choose who he wanted at his back, but he knew it wouldn't be him. He wasn't cross-trained in explosives, he was a cross-trained sniper, and this particular mission required explosives expertise.

He covertly checked his powerpacks, prepared his weapons and himself for the upcoming mission, and with a rapid blink, brought up his HUD. On it, it showed the locations of four other teams, marked by blinking yellow lights. The resistance's plan was simple; day one, hit everything, starting mid-morning whilst the government forces were all still hung-over from the minor holiday's celebration. Day two, hit everything again. And again, if necessary.

They expected to be in control of the Parliament building by noon, Day 5, to have wiped out all loyalist forces by day 10, and to have established trade relations and a full-out government by day 6, leaving one day of extra for the VE forces.

Gates cracked his neck and knuckles, then wiped the sweat off his hands. He grasped the SMG's grip, and shifted the PLX around on the floor, and prepared to sling it onto his back once he got out of the speeder.

"ETA, Tank?" asked Gates, poking his driver in the arm.

"Two minutes."

"Get tactical, boys."
