"Alright, good to see ya'll here," Riqimo smiled at the few troopers he had around this small table, the first group he was to brief. "You are lucky in being choosen to take one of our higher priority objectives." Or unluckly, only time may tell...Riq shuffed a couple papers, "For this mission, you will be classified as Aurek Squad. Now, we don't have much information for you, and certainly don't have a map of their tunnel systems, so this will be a difficult task. Essentially we want you to attempt to take as many of the Cleoggi as you safely can captive and return them to shuttle for extraction." "Stun settings of your blasters may or may not be effective, we don't know. You will be provided with net launchers and miscellaneous traps slash snares that may be of use. You are qualified to use lethal force when it is impossible to take at least one Cleoggi alive. It is unkown if these creatures are sentient or not, but you are to treat them as so, and any act of excessive torture will be punished accordingly. Understood?" Nods came from everyone around the table, "As for the actual details of equipment, you will have Rad Trooper armor, four hours out of the eight standard hours that form a day on this planet are spend facing the sun, with no atmosphere and being extremely close to the sun, it is likely that ANY weapon you have will work in the extreme radiation, unless you are suffiently far underground. Weapons will include two frag grenades and three flashbangs each. You will have two Stormtrooper carbines, in the event one fails, and a vibroblade." "You will also have manacles with a shock property that you can adminster via a button if needed. That should be sufficient for your objectives." "Shuttle drops you onto the surface in one hour, your quartermaster is Sergeant Gensius. He'll get ya'll equipped." | Dante ComNet Veteran [VE-ARMY] Lance Corporal Post Number: 1211 Total Posts: 1479 Joined: Sep 2006 Status: Offline | RE: Captor's Gambit (Aurek Squad) | March 14, 2008 7:00:13 PM | | Dante was silent throughout the briefing, his mind on what he was about to do. Images of blaster bolts tearing through unarmored flesh, screaming humanoids running from the plasma-blackened barrels only to be shot in the back; these and more ran through Dante's mind before he forced himself to think of something else. Still there was one thought that he couldn't stop thinking, one that repeated endlessly like a corrupted message on a datapad: He was about to help commit genocide. Oh, of course they didn't call it genocide but what else could you call what they were about to do? Their orders were to "pacify any hostiles and secure specimens of the Cleoggi". On the ground that translated to "kill everything that moves and grab the wounded so we can vivisect them in our labs". According to rebel propaganda, the Empire had viewed such actions as normal, even building death-ships with the sole purpose of wiping out entire species. Dante had always written such reports off as the product of rebel sympathisers and propagandists. Now, with the flimsies ordering to do what the shadowfeeds had always claimed, Dante felt a moment of doubt. I am about to help with the destruction of an entire species, except for those unlucky enough to be caught. I am about to destroy a culture, a civilisation, and then help with the destruction of a world for a handful of raw materials. And the funny thing is, I don't feel more.Brushing the thought aside, Dante heard Riqimo dismiss them and he got to his feet. Walking through the corridors of the Dominion, he passed many other troopers and VE personnel, but for some reason he couldn't bring himself to look into their eyes. Yadda, yadda she thought to herself, his drones simply washing in from the one ear and out to the other. She was sitting, leaned back against her chair, on leg resting in awkwardly on the other while a pencil tapped against her heavy boots.
She smiled softly when her eyes landed on the familiar horned head of Jinx seated next to a newer recruit, Verkur. And then the newest yet most appreciated addition, Marka. All Jesters. They have really come a long way now. She grinned with a flash of pride shining in her icy blue eyes. Her eyes landed next to the only other female that were present in the group. Gunnery Sergeant Lucky Star. They’ve met briefly before, other than that, only talked through Comm. Links whenever Aeos had to rely information from Riqimo’s office to the Paladin Squad.
Alan and Arnaut were from another platoon, both illustrious squad leaders, each with a reputation worthy of the danger-levels their squad mission usually consisted off. That left only one trooper left to identify. Aeos squinted her eyes, cocked her head to the side and frowned,
“Dante, Lance Corporal from Raiders,” Alan next her whispered in his own attempt at staying awake.
‘I see-“
"Shuttle drops you onto the surface in one hour; your quartermaster is Sergeant Gensius. He'll get ya'll equipped."
Aeos jolted upright, the new level of sound a bit too much for her ears to handle.
“Oh, right,” she muttered, grinning at Riqimo’s dry expression which was still deciding it was disapproving his Platoon Adjutant’s behavior. Meanwhile chairs were scraping, steel on tile.
“Guess, we’re gonna pick up our supplies?” Lucky called out to Allan who strode over to the small female, his hand rested on the small of her back for a moment, before he recoiled. Aeos shrugged it off. She didn’t really approve of inter-squad romances, but this was none of her business.
More chairs scraped, and the room filled out pretty quickly. Aeos remained behind along with Riqimo.
She sighed.
“What’s wrong with you Gunny?” Riqimo inquired in a slightly dry manner. Aeos glance at him. They were on the same eye level, both struggling with being vertically challenged.
“I’m tired….of fighting,” she muttered, dropping her neck to the side, allowing a few bones to pop in her spine.
“Aren’t we all? Aren’t we all?” he muttered in a slight question of statement while patting her on the shoulder before he left for the door.
“Aeos, I suggest you collect your equipment,” he suggested when he paused at the door, speaking to her in an afterthought. He leaned back in his chair, rocking it a bit on its rear legs, keeping perfect balance so that he did not fall backwards and make a fool of himself. Verkur looke over to the rest of his squadmates. Most were Jester, and he felt comfortable and at ease knowing he had friends by his side.
Once the briefing was done, Verk set his cahir on the floor and stood. He nodded to Aeos, and then left the room. He walked down the hall towards the equipment room to get his gear. As he walked down the halls of the Domonion, Verk felt nothing. Not an ounce of pity or remorse, nothing. Nothing at all for the species he was about to help destroy, and easily at that.
After several minutes fo walking, Verk finally came to the equipment room. He walked in and found other troopers in the room, but saw none of his own. He moved over to the side and watched the door, waiting for someone of his squad to enter so that he had soemone to walk and talk with on the way to the drop ship. He followed the rest of the group out of the room and picked up his pace slightly to catch up to his squad leader.
"Glad to be back with members of the squad again" Jinx said as his pace matched that of Aeos. She nodded in return and said "glad to have you guys back" The group walked along the long corridor until they came to the armory.
It was a rather large room filled with several walls full of weaponry and racks of armored suits. The squad went through the process of being outfitted by Sergeant Gensius. Jinx watched the others grab their gear and make their way over to don their armored suits. Once they were suited up and ready the began to leave off toward the hangar where the shuttle should be waiting for them.
Once it was his turn he stepped up and watched as the sergeant walked back to a rack of armored suits, remove one and bring it back up to Jinx. "Try not to dent this one, they're a real pain to work on and fixing them takes forever" he said with a sly smile. Jinx nodded and smiled. He was then handed his rifles and stun cuffs. Once he was fully equipped he went to the side, donned his suit and slung his rifles.
He saw that Verkur was standing over to the side and waited for him to go through the line for his gear. He wanted to see how he was doing after the simulation. He was staring ahead, looking straight at Doc. Once they were dismissed,
Chairs scraped as everyone got up, almsot at the same time and Lucky waited for Alan to reach her side. She felt his hand on the small of her back. It felt good to have him there. Together, they moved off to the equipment room and grabbed the things they would be needing.
"Wonder what the mines on Strak look like."
"Guess we'll find out shortly."
She grabbed some manacles, an E-11/M, DC-15 blaster pistols and a blaster rifle. She moved off towards a desk which had six huge drawers. From one of them, she removed a few flash bangs.
The mining species they were getting rid of were most likely very sensitive to bright light, so these wer perfect. And what was good about them, was that they didn't blow anything up in their paths. all they did was emmit light.
Once she had everything she neede, she went to her quarters for armour , put it on and left for the shuttle bay. Once there, she saw that a few members of her group were already there, waiting.
"Hey, Lucky" came Aeos's voice.
"Hey Aeos " she replied back.
Lucky climbed into the shuttle, not wanting to stand around outside, waiting for everyone else to join them. The advantage of being alone was that you could think more clearly. Technically, one was always alone. No matter what. Which mean sthat the phrase she knew so well, was so true. She had experienced death more than once. in the hands of doctors who never wanted to listen.
Live Together, Die Alone...
Closing her eyes, she took a deep breath in, and a minute later, heard people start to come aboard the shuttle. | Marka ComNet Cadet [VE-ARMY] Sergeant Post Number: 299 Total Posts: 353 Joined: Oct 2005 Status: Offline | RE: Captor's Gambit (Aurek Squad) | March 14, 2008 9:16:51 PM | | One or two things had caught Marka’s attention at the briefing. The first was the mention of excessive torture. Riqimo had stated very firmly that excessive torture of the local inhabitants would be punished as necessary, which struck Marka as slightly disappointing. He couldn’t help but wonder if it was in some way directed at him. After all, Marka had worked with Doc before, and Doc knew how he operated. Nevertheless, orders were orders, and the sergeant would not use excessive torture. He would simply kill what he was told to.
The second thing that had caught his attention was the brief moment of affection between Lucky and another of the soldiers. Who it was, Marka didn’t know; but he was sure he would eventually. There were introductions to be made at some point. But in his experience with the Raiders, inter-squad relationships could easily become become a dangerous inconvenience. It all came down to their professionalism.
After having left the briefing alone and picking up his equipment, Marka suited up and headed to the shuttle. Most of the squad had already arrived, and were gathered around at the foot of the loading ramp. Marka noted that he would, again, be working under a mixed squad. Fortunately, he was on some small level familiar with a few of the troops; the most familiar being Lucky. The two of them had come from the same simulation, though he could not see her with the rest of them. With a quick mental shrug, Marka shuffled past the small congregation, nodding at Arnaut, onto the shuttle.
Lucky was already on board, her eyes closed and was breathing deeply, though she did not look asleep. Marka assumed it was some form of meditation, perhaps a pre-mission ritual. Not so far-fetched, as he had one himself, which was very similar on the surface, but he imagined it was very different emotionally.
Taking a seat, the sergeant rested his head back against the wall of the shuttle, letting his eyes close slowly. He shut down his body as best he could, eased his breathing, and brought his thoughts to a less chaotic pace. The world decelerated. Every noise that could be heard was dampened and echoed softly off the walls. In his mind, Marka pictured a blade moving through the black, blood-stained and worn. He heard the metallic whistling as it cut the air, his body warming at the sound. Discipline of body and mind was key, was centre to his performance. The blade was replaced by a faceless, featureless body, unarmed, swiftly breezing between stances, portraying violence with a dancing fluidity. As the black began to fade away, and light returned to his mind, Marka opened his eyes. Barely moments had passed, and the rest of the squad had begun climbing into the shuttle, ready for the mission ahead of them. Sergeant Marka Jester Squad +AdvanceReconCommandos{ARC} +

He waited for everyone else, and then moved over to the quatermaster to get his rad suit. After several minutes fo fighting with the damned thing, he finally got it on. The real suit felt a little bit more comfortable then the one he wore in the sim room. He nodded to the quartermaster and walked away.
Verkur moved to the weapons rack and grabbed his two carbines, attacking the first to the back of his armor. The second he held in his hand. Verk then moved over to the melee weapons, and instead of grabbing a regular vibroblade, he took a pair of ryyk kerarthorr blades. He had a pair of his own back on Tadath, but was told to leave all of his weapons there. He was glad they had at least one pair on board. Verkur attached the ryyk blades to his back as well, and in a position so that they were easily accessable. He then grabbed his carbine and went to retrieve his explosives.
After obtaining his gear, Verkur moved over to the door where Jinx waited for him. When they were both ready, they left and made their way to the hanger. Both soldiers boots thudded lightlty as they walked through the halls. Verkur gripped his rifle, and then eased his grip.
"So how you doing? I mean since the sim room?" Jinx asked.
"It was alright. Aeos went and got herself killed in the sim room."
"Oh really?" Jinx laughed.
"Yea. She's insane, and it was a bit strange. Just hopped in the vehicle I stole from some dead guy and drove off. Rammed the thing right into a bridge." Verkur shook his head.
"Yea well, thats Aeos for ya. Always wants to get things done. Its nice that most of Aurek has Jester members in it. Makes it easier for us to work together since we have already gotten past the get to know you stage."
"I suppose thats a plus." Said Verkur
There was a pause in the conversation as they continued to walk.
"So you ready for this?" Verkur sighed.
"Yea. Though I wish there wasnt any radiation. These sui are annoying, and uncomfortable."
"Yea. They can be annoying. I find the real thing better then the sim ones though." Verkur chuckled.
The two Jester members reached the hanger rather quickly, and once onboard the shuttle, they sat next to eachother so they could easily chat, rather then shout across the shuttle. A few of the other Aurek members were already onboard. Verkur sat quietly waiting for either a conversation to start, or for everyone else to board the shuttl,e and hen take off. He didn’t know any of them, not really, with maybe the small exception of Jinx who he’d briefly had the pleasure of fighting with in the simulations. Good fighter...didn’t die at least. That was always a good sign. Alan was a squad leader, more recently placed than Arnaut, but he was supposedly pretty good. Aeos was another squad leader, though from another platoon, and had been around before Arnaut. Arnaut remembered something vague about her back right after he graduated from the academy, but he couldn’t recall anymore.
His white rad-trooper armor clinked uncomfortably as he strolled the halls. They were made for protection, not comfort, and between that and the simulator, he was really starting to detest it. He longed for his special operations armor. Light, custom-fitting. Perfect. Not bulky, heavy, and very imperfect like the coffin of plastek he was encased in.
The shuttle was spacious, not like many of the others Arnaut had been forced to ride throughout his military career. They were really treating them well. Of course, they were probably sending them to their deaths, and this was all to make them feel more comfortable before they died, but, comfort was comfort.
Arnaut stumbled in, mumbling curses about his armor under his breath, and took a seat on the farthest side of the shuttle. There weren’t many people on the shuttle yet despite there only being fifteen minutes left until takeoff. It wasn’t long before they filed in though, and soon, just five minutes before launch, they were all in.
Arnaut leaned his head back and closed his eyes, slowly remembering what it was like to fight in the armor, in the radiation environment. Bulky, confining. Probably stifiling and hot. Itchy, Arnaut though, scratching between the joints of his armor. Seeing as how he could only come up with negative descriptions, Arnaut decided to stop worrying about it. He could deal with it once they were planet-side.
A technician stepped on board and looked around the cabin. All he got were grim faces. The troopers knew what they were going into was going to be hard, knew it was going to test them. Knew that, possibly, some of them might not make it back. The tech looked around nervously before asking, “Everyone strapped in?”
There were a few nodded heads and a general murmur of affirmation and the tech half-scurried, half-ran off the shuttle. Arnaut smiled. The navy techs weren’t used to seeing so many soldiers. They’d known starships and pilots their careers. This was...new. Different. And it frightened them. Good, Arnaut thought, let them be scared. At least someone is. The cleoggi sure as hell wouldn’t be.
With that reassuring thought in mind, Arnaut sat back and waited. Final checks were made, and slowly the door to the shuttle snapped closed. There was a hiss as the interior pressurized and then the shuttle jerked suddenly and slid forward, out of the ISD. For a second, they were in a limbo between gravities. They were no longer inside the star destroyer’s gravitational pull, but the shuttle hadn’t yet turned on it’s small generators. Arnaut lifted slightly in his seat, bile rising up in his throat, before the generators kicked in and they were forced back down suddenly.
Arnaut queasily shook his head, hoping the nausea would wear off soon. He didn’t like space travel much. Sure, he was fascinated by space, by the way that entire planets, millions, billions of people, could be condensed to one small pinprick of light in the far distance. Who wasn’t? But he needed firm ground, something to lean on, some support, and the knowledge that he wasn’t surrounded by a void of blackness and death. Good, hard land.
Arnaut unstrapped himself, sensing that it was safe enough, and helped himself to a water from the drink station next to his seat. It calmed his stomach a little. Around him, others were starting to unstrap. Some tension seemed to suddenly free up. Someone broke out a deck of sabaac cards and, in no time flat, a game was going, with, as Arnaut viewed, an already sizeable sum of credits in the center. Jokes were exchanged, and there was a calm undertone of mirth in the cabin.
So relaxing. So peaceful. Too bad it wouldn’t stay that way, Arnaut thought sadly. Gunnery Sergeant Arnaut SL/GSG Arnaut/4SQD/1PLT/1COM/1BAT/VEA/VE [ES2] [EW2] -=Wraith PRIDE=--=SL=- + Advance Recon Commandos {ARC} + ~ W i l d c a r d P l a t o o n ~

And this was no exception. As the shuttle slid out of the Dominion, the sergeant clenched his fists around the edge of his seat and held on, white knuckled. It was over in only a few short seconds, but it was long enough to cause some measure of discomposure. Even after every drop he had ever been on, it was still a bother to his senses.
Once the gravity had settled and it was deemed safe to leave their seats, the majority of the squad had crowded around a small table for a few hands of Sabaac. And it hadn’t taken them long to throw a whole bunch of credits in, raising the stakes quite interestingly. One of the soldiers was being quite foolish, throwing cards in too quickly, seemingly without thought. However, the rest of the squad seemed quite content in letting him do so, as it increased their chances of winning.
While a large portion of the squad was playing, three were left sitting, minding their own business: Aeos, Arnaut and Marka. Each of them were sitting by themselves, seemingly wrapped up in their own minds and issues. Marka had begun to drift back off into his meditative state, not comfortable enough with the squad to join in with the game. He imagined Aeos running over strategies and back-up plans, sifting through every anomaly she could imagine twice over, making sure the squad would get back alive. But when he looked over at Arnaut, he hadn’t the foggiest what was on his mind.
The two had served together in the ARC a while back, before Marka’s absence. But neither of them had spoken since, and the last mission they had taken together had been a twisted horror. Marka knew that he himself had been altered by it; but for Arnaut, he could not be sure.
Within a few minutes, Marka had completely submerged his mind, closing it off to whatever was around him. But, where his usual period of meditation would kick in, this time he slipped gently and easily off to sleep; something he had not had much of for many weeks. Of course, he hadn’t actually realised he had been asleep until he was awoken by someone’s hand gripping his shoulder. Sergeant Marka Jester Squad +AdvanceReconCommandos{ARC} +

When he had entered the briefing room he had taken a quick look around at who was in the squad. Most he didn’t recognise, and some he did. He was very happy when he noticed Lucky was in the squad. The last time he had hooked up with her had been at the Imperial Ball where their relationship had reached new heights. He was looking forward to once again be working with her as he had always worked well back when he was with the Paladin squad.
After the briefing was over, Lucky was waiting for him and together they went to the equipment room. Alan immediately noticed a DL-44 Heavy Blaster Pistol and grabbed it immediately. He wasn’t sure if it was going to work on the planet or not but he didn’t feel himself if he didn’t have it. He picked up several other supplies but the feeling of the blaster strapped to his side reassured him.
Once Alan and Lucky had gotten their equipment, they headed straight down to the shuttle. A lot of the squad had already started playing Sabaac. Alan and Lucky joined in but Sabaac wasn’t a game that Alan was very good at. After losing several hands, he decided to quit before he lost too many times. Lucky decided to leave with him and together they moved to a more quiet area of the shuttle.
Alan could feel some of the squad’s eyes on them. He was sure that some, maybe all of them disapproved of relationships within the Army but he didn’t care. He knew that once they were in combat they would be professional and act accordingly. For right now though, they weren’t. They talked and laughed as the shuttle headed down to the planet. Oh shitz it she thought, when her HUD flickered back online across her helmet visor as soon as it stopped detecting REM patterns in her system.
She stole a glance at the squad, already settled with each other, just like any regular squad.
“ATTENTION, seven minutes till touchdown-please report to the drop-zone of the shuttle,”
“Rightio Marki-boy, let’s get going,” Aeos muttered, leaning over to the seat that faced her, she grabbed her carbines that was resting on it, and bolted up. Around her, a new air washed across the atmosphere.
The calm before the storm was about to get a rude awakening.
The group rushed through several doors, before the final one shut closed behind them. The yellowed floor beneath them were blinking in various arrays of red and green lights, which Aeos supposed was some mechanism in placed linked to the radioactivity measured as soon as the drop-zone’s hatched opened hell.

"ATTENTION, seven minutes 'till touch-down..."
As she heard these words over the PA, she swiftly got up and followed Aeos to the first door. They would go through a few set of doors before reaching the final one, which would open when they reached the drop-zone. She heard people scrambling to get all their equipment ready, hers were already in her hands so she didn't have to worry about that.
"Good luck..." she heard Alan say to her back, he was standing in a row behind her.
"You too."
She looked down at the floor which had many different coloured lights flashing up at them. They could serve for many things, though the most likely possibility was the radiation levels.
The coloured lighting lit up the drak walls. He rapidly turned his head both left and right until he remembered the events of the previous day: the summons five units after they got back from their last mission, the sims, the briefing, and now this. Sitting in a shuttle with a group of officers who outranked him by three or more levels and on his way to a radioactive hellhole to wipe out an entire population of primitives. Oh joy. The shuttle shook like a thing possessed, and Dante could feel more than hear the whine of the repulsorlifts as they tried to compensate for the ship's weight. Great, just what we need: a repulsorlift failure. Grabbing one of the handholds, he clung onto it as the shuttle tilted first to the left then to the right. Nearby, the others were chatting as though nothing was wrong. Calming himself, Dante tried to ignore the shaking and instead shoved a power cell into his primary E-11 carbine. The weapons glowed a dull red for a second, then emitted a beep. A pair of circles appeared on Dante’s HUD, with a superscript giving such details as distance. Satisfied, Dante reholstered the carbine and pulled out the deece pistol he had brought with him over the protests of Gensius. The small but powerful weapon would be easier to pull out than a second E-11 carbine and had roughly the same rate of failure. If it did fail…Dante shrugged. That was what the vibroblade was for wasn’t it? Still, it was unlikely the natives would be able to resist. Watching your comrades get gutted and burned alive tended to have somewhat of a demoralising effect on infantry, especially badly trained or untrained ones. A voice still whispered to him, telling him to reconsider, to stop, but Dante ignored it. It was time to fight, and moral considerations would just get him killed. There was a crackle of static, and the pilot's voice echoed through Dante's sealed helmet. “One minute to drop-down, expect three enemy targets from mission objective, probably curious about the ship. They may not alert their clans-I repeat, they cannot alert their clans, clear them” In other words, blow their brains out.Dante turned off the safety on his E-11 and was the first out the hatch as the shuttle came down, its repulsorlifts sending up clouds of dust in all directions. The first thing he saw was two of the natives fleeing. They had obviously seen the large transport and were on their way to warn their kinsmen. “Sithspawn…” TRP/LCPL Dante/1SQD/2 PLT/1 COM/1 RGT/1BAT/Tadath/VEA*HeavyWeapons * "Nel mezzo del cammin di nostra vita..."

Readying his vibroblade, Marka eased himself onto his toes, ready to move as quickly as he could manage in the radiation suit. Luckily, through rigorous training, and the previous simulation mission, he had become reasonably accustomed to the mechanics of the rad armour. It limited movement, sure, but not enough to be largely detrimental.
As the shuttle bay opened, the troopers poured out, only to see two of the three hostiles fleeing the scene. It could have been out of fear, or it could have been to warn their tribes; either way, there was still one of the Cleoggi left, and Marka picked it out and moved. It charged him, and it charged quickly. Marka barely had time to adjust his stance when it was upon him. It lifted its crude bludgeoning device high above its head as it did so, opening its torso to an attack. Though his fluidity was a little rusty, the sergeant crouched as the beast approached him, and swiped his vibroblade across the midsection of the Cleoggi. It passed him, and Marka believed the fight was done. There was blood on his sword. He turned to inspect his handiwork only to find the beast still standing, and making a turn for him. Fortunately enough, Aeos had witnessed the encounter and promptly unloaded a few rounds into the creature’s skull. It dropped hard into the dust, its body quickly coated in dirt.
The rest of the squad had managed to mow down the other two, but they had taken some shots before they fell. Marka wiped his blade clean, mentally preparing himself for a tougher mission than he had expected. Two of the squad trotted off to retrieve the two previously fleeing Cleoggi, while Aeos sauntered over to Marka.
“Well, Marks,” Aeos began, gazing down at the large gash across the stomach of the creature, “it’s not every day I see something stay standing after you’ve hit it. Getting rusty, are we?”
Marka imagined a grin behind her visor, and replied calmly, “We’ll see.”
In truth, the idea of a hardened enemy able to withstand casual torso wounds appealed to Marka. It ultimately meant that the inevitable genocide of this particular species would be much more gruelling work than he had originally anticipated. His first thoughts had been along the lines of: primitive, untrained and virtually useless. It was pleasing that this wasn’t the case, because at the end of the day, when all was said and done, Marka knew that he would feel all the more fulfilled. If you’re going to wipe out an entire species, you may as well get the most out of it, he thought. And what he wanted was satisfaction; something that couldn’t be attained without some marginally high degree of difficulty.
A few moments later, Jinx and Verkur had reappeared, dragging the corpses by the arms through the soil. The one Verkur was carrying was face down, it’s blistered and bleeding back exposed to the squad, face grinding across the ground. From where Marka was standing, he could not be sure if either of the creatures were still alive. He assumed they weren’t, as they must have taken a fair few shots. Not many things could have survived that, environmentally hardened primitive life form or not.
But then, he wondered just how much use the beasts would be even if they were alive. They were hardly going to give them directions or handy creature-snaring tips. The sergeant shook his head, watching as Aeos strode across to the corpses, shortly followed by the rest of the squad, including Marka. All eyes were fixed on the bodies below them.
“Certainly an attractive bunch,” Dante murmured sarcastically as he crouched low to inspect the face of one of them.
Arnaut looked up at Verkur and Jinx, “Either of you two check if they are breathing?”
“Of course,” Verkur said with an accompanying nod, “and they’re quite dead, as far as I can tell.”
“Right,” Aeos said clearly, “make sure you’ve all got everything you need now, because this is your last chance. These Cleoggi tunnels could be anywhere around here, based on the Intel we received. We move out in five minutes. Be ready.”
Marka re-sheathed his vibroblade, not realising that he hadn’t done so already, and primed his carbine.

She looked around slowly, taking it all in, Aeos and Marka were standing at Verkur's side, looking at one of the creatures. It was facedown on the ground, presumably dead.
They looked like ugly, brown tree roots to her.Out of curiosity, she used a stick to open one of them's mouth. Its teeth were yellowed and its breath smelled like a mix of sulfur and dirt.
"Yuck" came Jinx's voice who was looking over her shoulder.
"Deal with it. You'll see far worse things later on in your career."
The look of surprise on his face was priceless. I bet he's not used to being spoken to that way. He looked like he was going to say something, but decided to keep it to himself. When she heard Aeos say that they should make sure they had everything they needed, she smiled to herself. She always came prepared.
At the mention taht the tunnels were somewhere near, she took another slow, long look at her surroundings. The land here was barren, the soil hard as though completely made of rock, and shiny in places where wetness had been created but had not dried.
She got up from her crouching position, picked up her E-11 , held it against her chest and watched as the rest of the group busied themselves: Gathering their things together, helping out other members and meeting up with Aeos and Marka who were standing not far from her .
"All ready to go?" she heard Aeos ask the group. | Dante ComNet Veteran [VE-ARMY] Lance Corporal Post Number: 1215 Total Posts: 1479 Joined: Sep 2006 Status: Offline | RE: Captor's Gambit (Aurek Squad) | March 15, 2008 1:45:51 PM | | The squad moved in a roughly V-shaped formation, their boots sending up puffs of dirt as they advanced. Aeos held up one gloved hand and the formation came to a complete standstill. "What is it, Sarge?" Verkur queried. "I don't know, Private." The static, combined with uneasiness, made her voice seem hoarse. "Something about the ground...Where did these three" Here, she kicked one of the prone bodies on the ground. come from?" "Don't they live in tunnels, or something?" "That's what Riq said, although we don't know much." Aeos's sigh was distorted into a hiss by the speaker. "Standing here and talking about it won't get the job done. Let's go." As they moved, Dante noticed how there were patches of land that were free of the scarring from the bombardment that had scarred the rest of the desolate surface. Wonder what sort of natural process would cover up the damage in patches like that?He shrugged then moved on. "Wait, the ground just moved!" That shout was enough to make everything blazingly clear to Dante, and he cursed himself for not seeing it before. "Ambush!" All around them, there there were puffs of dirt as the tunnel covers were moved aside and the natives crawled out in two or threes. There were cries, some of which had a certain tone to them, and Dante had a sudden moment of understanding. These were sentient. These were sentient, they knew what had happened to their three relatives moments before, and they were angry. One a foot or two taller than the others, clad in some kind of ragged robe, stepped forwards and opened its jaws. Looking into the gaping maw, filled with yellow teeth and staring into the mad eyes, Dante knew there was no way they could negotiate with the furious horde, even if their instructions hadn't made that impossible. Their leader shrieked three phrases, gestured to the white armoured troopers, then retreated. Even as the clan leader moved back, his followers leaped forwards, their weapons in hand and howling for blood. Looking at the horde, Dante had to bite back a curse. Although most of the mob was wielding rocks, some had sharp stone or metal blades. Even high quality armour, designed to withstand just such an attack, couldn't resist the force forever and they were fighting on the enemy's terrain. The locals had lived here all their lives, they knew how to fight on such barren terrain, and they were determined. All the stormtroopers had were their weapons and their training. Both seemed unlikely to be of much use against such a large force and against such determination. They were defending their homes; the stormtroopers were fighting to commit genocide. Nearby, someone slowly whispered a heart-felt curse. As though that was a signal, the largest one cried out again. Bringing his E-11 up to shoulder height, Dante fired a shot. The blue bolt impacted the leader, who crumpled to the ground in an unconscious heap. Now truly infuriated, the other aliens attacked as one. He killed. Behind the black visor of his helmet, he was just another trooper, another soldier lost in the chaos that was the Vast Empire. He was a designated number, possibly a casualty statistic in the future. Matters of killing species were in the hands of soldiers above his position. When he was told to annihilate, he did so. The notion that he was just an insignificant grunt, a mere screw in the mechanism of the Vast Empire, made it slightly easier to do his mission. Morals were for sissies. Though, looking at the odds stacked on them, Arnaut was soon starting to think that his notion of being a casualty statistic might be a present cause for concern, not future.
Arnaut lifted his E-11 and started firing, shots peppering the enemy. They didn’t even flinch. From all around, the cleoggi were appearing in large numbers, zeroing in on the small band of intruders that had had the misfortune of stumbling across their planet. The Imperials were outnumbered and outclassed.
“Hold them back!” Aeos was screaming, stalking the impromptu circle of Imperial soldiers that had been formed. She was holding her carbine in front of her, choosing shots, and bringing down cleoggi with ruthless efficiency. “Don’t let a single one near! The Empire demands it!"
Arnaut backpedaled so that he had two Imperials covering his flanks. No need to try and play the hero and get himself clubbed to death outside the aid of his team. He wouldn’t look so heroic as a bleeding mass of broken plastek and fleshy meat pulverized into the ground.
He continued firing, trying to pick out shots. There he scored a shoulder hit, sending the cleoggi into fits of pain and rage. There he blew out one’s kneecap, causing it to flop to the ground bleeding. There he scored a head shot, a clean kill. Arnaut momentarily congratulated his fine skills with shooting, before realizing that both the one he’d hit in the shoulder and the one in the knee were picking themselves up off the ground, albeit with a slight disability. Arnaut cursed their fortitude and unloaded the rest of his clip into the two of him.
One fell, but the other continued on. Arnaut had no time to reload, no time to get his other E-11. Arnaut decided to beat him at his own game. Arnaut lunged forward, dodging the hasty swipe from the creatures club, and slid out his knives. The sprung forth from their sheathes in Arnaut’s bracers. Arnaut wasn’t sure if they were allowed or not but Arnaut didn’t care. As long as they kept him alive, they were staying.
Arnaut ended up crouching right in front of the creature’s lunging form. The swing carried the cleoggi off balance, and gave Arnaut the opportunity he need. He lashed out, drawing one of his knives through the meat of the cleoggi’s left leg. It cut the muscles, resulting in another howl of pain. The creature landed on the leg and immediately crumpled to the ground. Arnaut jumped on top and thrust a knife through the base of its skull before it could scream a third time.
Before Arnaut had time to move back to the ring, another cleoggi was upon him. The club came down swiftly and missed Arnaut by bare inches, hitting the corpse instead. There was sickening crack accompanied with what Arnaut assumed to be a look of dislike on the face of the cleoggi. Apparently it didn’t much like hitting its friends, dead or alive.
Arnaut stabbed, hitting it in the stomach. Ichor squirted down the length of Arnaut’s arms causing him to jump back suddenly. The beast roared and charged Arnaut, not even seeming to notice the blood pouring down and matting its fur. Arnaut, on his back, began to crawl away from the beast as quickly as he could.. If he couldn’t get on his feet, he was as good as dead. He tried to stand, only to slip off his blood soaked hands onto the ground again. The creature was close, almost upon him.
Two shots clipped it in the head and it fell just a little ways from Arnaut’s feet. Arnaut sighed relief backed up back into the circle.
Around them, there was a nice, almost clean line of dead cleoggi. Only three or four, including the one Arnaut killed, had actually managed to make it to the Imperials and engage in hand-to-hand, which was definitely their forte. The rest were pulling back, retreating into holes, and, for the most part, were pulling back into their tunnels.
All in all, the battle had raged a scant three minutes. Casualties on the cleoggi side were counted as only fifteen, despite the numbers that the cleoggi had brought to bear. Judging from the blood on the ground, Arnaut guessed a whole lot more of them had been wounded. And still managed to make it back. The creatures were tough, Arnaut gave them that.
No deaths on the Imperial side, although Alan was idly fingering the jagged scar one of the cleoggi had given his breastplate. Arnaut looked around at the aftermath, hoping to find the ‘leader’ Dante had felled with a stun bolt in the first seconds of the battle. The place where he’d fallen was empty. Considering how resilient the creatures were to the Imperial weapons, the cleoggi leader had probably walked off. Arnaut sighed. All that and not a single one captured. He hadn’t been expecting to get one so early, but still...the battle seemed like a waste.
“Let’s get moving,” Arnaut suggested. “They’ll be back.” Slowly, one by one they descended into the nearest tunnel. It was dark, darker than Arnaut would’ve suspected, but pretty spacious to accommodate the large cleoggi. And, surprisingly enough, it wasn’t connected to any of the other tunnel openings they’d seen. They’d coordinated their attack without face to face communications.
Either, they were very precise in their timing, or they had other means of communication through the tunnels. Whatever it was, it meant bad news for the Imperials. The notion that these were just semi-sentient barbarians was fading fast. He sighed and moved over to a section of the ring of dead bodies that had formed around Aurek squad. One of the creatures was still live, though barely. It squirmed and gurgled, crawling towards Verkur as it still futilly tryed to continue its attack. Verk aimed his rifle at the things head and pulled the trigger once. The Celoggi's body jerked, and then flopped lifeless in a pool of its own blood.
Verkur moved back over to the group as they began to file into the Cleoggi's tunnels. Verk flipped on his helmets flashlight, and scanned the dark tunnel ahead. Even though these creatures were primitive, and deadly, the work they did was amazing. The walls of the tunnels was smooth and measured. Verkur moved over to one of the walls and ran his glooved hand over its surface. The stone was smooth, and cold. Verkur removed his hand, and looking at it, saw that it was covered in some sort of black slime.
Verkur clenched his hand, and repoened it, trying to feel for any form of conistency in the black ooze. It was sticky and plaiable. Then he noticd his flaw, that could have been fatal. The ooze began to eat away at his gloove, putting holes in the protective material.
"You have to be kidding me." Vekur complained.
"Whats the problem Verk?" Aeos asked.
Verkur began to move frantically as the gloove started to deteriorate quicker with each passing second. He looked to the squad.
"Are you all just going to stand there? My gloove is beaing eaten, and if I dont know about all of you, but I like having two hands."
Aeos, Jinx, and Marka came to their fellow Jesters side, the others came over as well, but gave the members of Jester a bit of room to act. Jinx clamped his hands around Verkur's wrist, trying to make a seal so that no air would be lost when the gloove was removed.
"Ready." Jinx said.
Aeos nodded and removed the gloove, a spare was put on instantly by Marka. The gloove was locked in place, so Jinx let go. Verkur sighed and moved his fingers, glad he still had his right hand.
"Thanks guys. Oh and I would suggest not touching the walls. They are covered in some kind of black slime, and as you can see its toxic and corrosive."
Everyone nodded and turned to move deeper into the tunnels. Everyones light was on now, and everyone kept their distance from the black walls. Several more minutes later, and the group came to a four way intersection.

Troopers rushed out in front of Alan and swiftly dealt with them. From his visor, Alan glared at the back of Aeos. He thought back to her conversation with him and Lucky on the ship and his blood still boiled. How dare she question his commitment to the mission, she obviously did not know him at all. He had wanted to shout at her on the ship but Lucky had held him back,
His anger towards Aeos was pushed to one side as the squad was suddenly ambushed. Alan quickly grabbed his heavy blaster pistol from his belt and prayed silently that it worked. Aiming it at the nearest Cleoggi, he fired. The bolt flew straight at the Cleoggi and its head erupted as it fell down dead.
Excellent thought Alan as he started to pick off target after target. One of the Cleoggi charged Alan. Before Alan could react the Cleoggi had bowled him over onto the ground. Standing over Alan, the Cleoggi brought his heavy club down. Alan rolled on the ground as the club impacted on the ground, narrowly missing Alan.
Not being able to bring his weapon to bear on the creature, Alan saw only one window of opportunity and he took it. He brought his boot swiftly up between the creature’s legs. The Cleoggi stopped its attack and howled in pain. Alan soon put it out of its misery as he fired a shot into the creature’s chest. The Cleoggi fell back dead and Alan quickly got up and resumed the fight.
Soon the fighting was over and the squad started making their way down the tunnels. Alan did not holster his weapon, instead he had it in his hands, ready for anything. They all huddled toward the center of the tunnel, trying not to stray to close to the corrozive liquid on the walls, one large knot of white-clad troopers pushing their way through the darkness of the tunnel.
Arnaut had switched over to his IR filters on his HUD about fifteen minutes ago. The dark wasn’t...natural. It seemed to, as odd as it sounded, resist their light, push it back. Their flashlights weren’t particularly useful. The whole place was unnatural, and it had everyone spooked. Every echo, every draft of wind coming from the deeper depths of the tunnels had them spinning around, looking for its source, guns raised nervously. Everyone was on edge.
Arnaut wondered if the cleoggi had planned it this way, herding them into the darkest, most potentially lethal parts of the tunnels, and leaving them their to die. They hadn’t passed an opening to the surface in some time, and Arnaut was beginning to doubt that they’d see any for a lot longer a time.
The tunnel was relatively straightforward though, and there were only two more branch-offs after the first one, which, on both, they chose left. Walking along in the tunnel became burdensome after a while. It frayed their nerves, wore down at their senses. Most of them actually looked forward to some action, any action. Anything to get them out of the monotonous, wearying walking.
Arnaut, caught up in his thoughts, failed to notice a small wet patch on the smooth stone floor and went sliding shoulder-first into the wall. He scrambled back suddenly alarmed, swatting furiously at his shoulder-guard to clear it of the acid. The acid that wasn’t there. Everyone else, who, just a second before had been near panic, stared at Arnaut with as much confusion as he himself felt.
“What the...” . Arnaut looked down and brushed a few specks of dried liquid off his shoulder guard. It had the consistency of dirt. Standing up Arnaut went over to the wall as brushed it quickly. The “liquid” was no longer a liquid, and no longer corrosive. It fell off, crumbling, and made a small pile on the floor. Underneath was a clean, acid-smoothed stone face.
“Maybe they...use it to dig out their tunnels? It does an awfully good job,” Verkur suggested from the back of the group.
“Makes sense,” Arnaut replied, crushing a larger piece between his forefinger and thumb. It pattered to the floor.
“The main point is that it’s not corrosive anymore. Spread out a little, give yourselves a little room to breathe. No need to fear the walls anymore, so let’s get going,” Alan said, already turning.
Hesitantly at first, the squad moved out, closer to the walls, some even touching it for themselves. Soon they became more relaxed with the idea that the walls were safe and began to walk more comfortably next to them. They moved forward, farther and deeper into the tunnels.
Thirty minutes after descent, they finally saw their first bit of light. One minute they were walking in total darkness, IR filters displaying only themselves and the walls immediately around them, and then, around a corner, the light became so intense that most of them had to avert their eyes quickly, blinking back tears. They all shut off their IR filters and readjusted their vision before looking into the room they’d just entered.
It was large. More than large, it was giant. Immense. The ceiling of the round chamber rose up, out and beyond their sight, into darkness that looked to be more than a mile high. Arnaut hadn’t realized they’d come so deep. There was a roaring noise in their ears, one that they hadn’t noticed before entering the chamber. From out of the sides, waterfalls poured out, descending past the wide bridge of stone they were on and down into the fathomless depths below. The whole room was illuminated by large crystal formations, all jutting out near the waterfalls. They gave off an eerie blue-white glow that was surprisingly bright considering they were just crystals.
It was a magnificent sight, all said and done, and they stopped a second just to admire it. Arnaut picked a small stone off the ground and lobbed it off the edge into the distance. He didn’t hear it impact. Very carefully, he peered over the edge into the darkness below. He couldn’t see anything, except the waterfalls falling out of the crystals’ light and into darkness a few hundred feet down. It felt...dizzying, magnificent, and quiet frightening all at once. He pulled himself back from the edge before he had a chance to fall off.
“We’d better get going,” Arnaut said, giving a look around to the rest of the squad. They took their eyes off the waterfalls and the ceiling and nodded sadly. They moved on, the waterfalls fading fast in the distance, but the squad members kept looked back, furtively, as if hoping to catch one last glimpse of the odd, blue chamber. Monotonous dredging through claustrophobic and dangerous passages, no doubt infested with incredibly resilient and bloodthirsty savages, was a definite burden on one’s will; especially due to the apparent corrosiveness of the very walls. And as this wore on, each soldier became less and less enthused about the mission. But when the squad had stumbled onto the bridge, everything changed. The room was hypnotic, mesmerising in its own natural way. It seemed to immediately eradicate any and all negative feelings about the mission, about life... about anything. The blue-white light lulled the squad’s senses, calming them. They became less edgy as they peered over the edges at the crystals and waterfalls, noting the refracted light as it danced about them.
When the order was given to move out, there was an aura of regret being channelled from each troop. The mission would always be first, of course, but that chamber had a resounding effect on each of them. Marka wondered if it had any special significance to the Cleoggi, imagining them at the bottom of the pit, gazing up in wonder, awe-struck by the phenomenal beauty.
Once the gentle echo of falling water had all but disappeared, the squad began to regain a slight degree of restlessness. The passages wound away into the earth as they had been previously, and a distant grinding sound echoed its way to the squad’s attention, furthering their awareness. It was a nerve-wrecking experience, not knowing just how close the enemy was, half expecting a horde of the natives to appear from nowhere to tear the soldiers apart.
An unnerving thought pushed its way to the surface of Marka’s consciousness. He toyed with the notion that these beasts were simply playing with them. The Empire troops were off their homeworld, facing an unknown number of hostiles beneath the surface of a foreign planet, strolling nervously through the centre of their power. It seemed an impossible and suicidal situation, but orders were orders. Then again, the idea of capturing one of these creatures alive had been violently forced behind the need to survive.
Rather suddenly, the passage broke out into a large cavernous room, its high ceiling far out of view. There was a crackling fire at the far end, perhaps seventy metres from the squad. Though somewhat obscured by the fire, the outline of a rather large Cleoggi could be seen, crouched down, facing away from the squad. Sensing the first real opportunity to snare one of the creatures, the squad shared an unspoken command and slinked into the room, barely making a noise. Lucky, who had grabbed a launcher before they had all set out into the tunnels, was skulking towards the Cleoggi, bringing the launcher up in aim. She turned her head to Aeos, waiting for the command. She was greeted with a nod, and Lucky fired. A steel net exploded from the launcher, trapping the Cleoggi quickly. It writhed about, letting out a bellowing growl that nearly shook the ground beneath them. Verkur stepped towards the ensnared beast and used to butt of his rifle to smack it in the skull.
“It’s not moving now,” he stated, prodding the lifeless body with his boot, “though I don’t know how long it will stay that way.”
Aeos nodded, “Good work both of you. Secure it as best you can, make sure it can’t move once we leave it.”
“Leave it?” Verkur asked, tilting his head.
“Do you want to haul it all the way back outside, and then trek through all that crap again just to get back here?”
Verkur nodded, content with the logic. Marka stepped over to Aeos, a thought playing through his mind.
“We should remove its tongue,” he stated bluntly, idly fingering the hilt of his vibroblade.
“Sergeant, I really don’t th-” Aeos’ words were cut off as Marka was propelled into her, crashing them both to the ground. A Cleoggi had appeared seemingly from nowhere and charged them.
No... this couldn’t have been a trap. How did they get behind us? Sergeant Marka Jester Squad +AdvanceReconCommandos{ARC} +

"Duct tape is like the Force. It has a light side and a dark side, and it holds the universe together" | Dante ComNet Veteran [VE-ARMY] Lance Corporal Post Number: 1216 Total Posts: 1479 Joined: Sep 2006 Status: Offline | RE: Captor's Gambit (Aurek Squad) | March 15, 2008 11:49:01 PM | | Walking along, Dante idly fingered a small chunk of crystal and watched in fascination as it gave off a faint glow. His eyes were still dazzled from the beauty of the cavern they had been about half a minute ago. In a lifetime spent crossing the galaxy, he had seen a lot of strange things, killed some and almost been killed by others, but this cavern had been more spectacular than most of them combined. Towers of Coruscant? They had their beauty, but there was an undertone of decay beneath all the garish touches. Mustafar had its own kind of splendor but this was tempered by the desolate, endless lava fields of the hellish moon. This was the first place Dante had truly loved for a long time and he couldn't help feeling a little sad at leaving it behind. If they succeeded, the Imperial engineers would drill vast holes in the planetoid's crust, collapsing these tunnels and all traces of an entire sentient species would be gone. A species that had produced a culture, a means of survival, a social structure… and that is doing its best to kill you. Get a grip, trooper. They were doomed from the moment the oh so important foxtrot in his comfortable, air-conditioned office doodled his name onto the document and forgot about it five units later. If you don't do it, they'll shoot you and send someone else in.Absorbed in his own thoughts, Dante didn't see the Cleoggi until Lucky pulled the trigger on the net gun and the alien was ensnared in a thick mesh. He watched with one eye as they argued over how to transport the creature and hence was the first to notice the blurred outline speeding towards the squad. Quickly, he thumped off the safety and tracked the outline even as he opened a channel with the squ | |
