In terms of typefaces, I say a lot of it also depends on colors. Think about having our white text be in a serif type. Certain typefaces might make it look nice, but I can imagine the serifs might interfere rather than add to it.
Hooooowever, I have always been of the mind that display types are generally sans serifs and text types are serifs. It all really depends on what typefaces we decide to use and the colors and sizes. It's also smart to only have two typefaces on the entire site. Any more and we will lose our design to too much variance.
Also one design secret when it comes to black and white: never do full black or full white. Darken the white or lighten the black just a touch so that it's unnoticeable to most people, but it also takes the strain off the eyes. Again, the in-browser editors let me play with copy in context, which is helpful, so I went ahead and tried Weebly, as Raz suggested. It's about as temperamental as Wix. Still, since it's more rigidly template-based, it makes for a very different look, overall. So try to keep your comments at this point to that, more than visuals (which won't get much better until I get past the weebly learning curve). But Raz, if the weebly code is indeed exportable, I'll go ahead and mock up the whole thing on there (learning/adjusting CSS as I go), and then we can just give Kadann the code to plug into the VE domain. But also, I stress again that even just a rewrite of the content on www.vastempire.com/main, and then moving that content to www.vastempire.com, would be a great, easy-to-implement improvement over what we have now. No need to wait for the full overhaul. I'm using this as an excuse to actually learn a bit of HTML and CSS, now. But I'd still prefer doing most of the work for a VE site update in something like weebly. Raz, it looks like there are options for exporting the code from weebly, though I think it's a bit of a third-party-invented work-around sort of deal, rather than a feature weebly provides/intends. That said, I'm actually picking up the basics of CSS and HTML much more quickly than I thought I would, so I should be able to reproduce the Weebly site code in an IDE to some extent. The big problem I foresee is anything fancy, like jQuery, javascript, or any of the integrated parts of the Imperial Network that require more than bare bones CSS/HTML (things like the Roster, for example). We can talk more about it via PM, though.
Everybody else: thanks for the feedback! I'll keep working the IC angle, with a sort of grungy, "used Universe" feeling. And I'll keep giving updates as the work progresses!

Adding my support. We really need to make this site update! At least talk to us on this. Please? If there're hurdles that make it problematic, let us know so we can try to work stuff out. These guys have been pouring their hearts into this project for more than two years now. Can't they get some dialogue at least?
