Should Fights be banned in the NHL?

I was just reading some sports articles and this is about fights being banned in hockey. Personally I think they should not ban them because its been part of the sport for as long as I can remember. State your opinions on the matter here if you wish. And here's the article:

I say no, although they should have more serious consequences in some cases...
/me remembers when my precious Thrashers got all those cheaps shots from the Caps...
That was absolutely ridiculous. If a guy starts a fight for no reason, the other one usually fights back... not Scott Mellanby though, he was taking punches and just stood there, finally after getting a few more he fought back cause he had a reason now. And he gets thrown out of the game!
That is my only complaint of the fighting rules. They need to consider the reasons for the fight. -----------------------

No, no, no, no, no, no, no, and no.
In fact, there should be MORE fighting. Not only is there fan appeal, but with tensions running high late in most games players might as well throw a few punches and give your team some morale. I could go forever with this subject, but that's what I think in a nustshell. -----------------------

Lol Garet. Did you guys read where it compares to the NFL? Well, I could care less about the fights, I like Hockey the way it is. But I would have to agree where they say the game would be more entertaining if the players just took the hard hits and kept playing. But then again, They don't stop after someone gets hit, they just keep going and going and thats how the tension builds. And I do think that if someone is backing away from the fight, and they they have no other choice but to fight, that they shouldn't get ejected from the game.
There just defending themselves so I do agree with you Riqimo.
I do like the fights though :P -----------------------

while we are at it why dont we start arming them? you know when he punches a knife sticks out and guts his opponent, I guarantee you there will be more fan appeal that way as well.
I say the fighting rules need to be modified a little but I still think there should be fighting but not more of it, I remember a Habs game where the game was paused every two mins because of a fight that was ridiculous. -----------------------

If you happen to know anything about hockey before 2004-05, then you would know that fighting is half of the game. Big hits, big men, big egos, big fights. That's the way it goes. If fighting becomes any less of a factor than it is now, hockey will lose a huge fanbase. -----------------------

yeah I know what Im trying to say is that if people had a choice we would bring back gladiatorial life or death combat to be televised on TV. Fighting used to be bigger than it is now, but I found it was overkill before. -----------------------

Never. People are unhappy enough as is with the rule changes sice the lockout. They would never risk getting rid of fighting. -----------------------
