It was released this morning that
Syd Barrett, the original guitarist for
Pink Floyd, passed away at the age of 60 a couple of days ago.
Although the cause of death has not been officially released, many believe it was related to complications of diabetes.
Although Syd Barrett's success with Pink Floyd was limited, he definatly made his mark. He composed the majority of the songs on their first LP, "Piper at the Gates of Dawn." However, with the growing fame, his abuse of LSD progressed, driving him away from sanity. He was becoming detached to the point where he would refuse to play shows, or sometimes just play the same note over and over again. It was at this point in time Syd was removed from the band and replaced by a good friend of the band, David Gilmour.
From there, Syd released two solo albums, but for the most part remained reclusive for the rest of his life.
He was a source of inspiration to Pink Floyd, many of their songs dealing with insanity; a topic derived from none other than Syd. The album "Wish You Were Here", was essentially a tribute to their friend. The Hit "Shine On You Crazy Diamond", a song directly about their fallen friend.
So may Syd Rest in Peace, and his music live on.
