Some of you who have talked to me on the IRC may know this, and others who havn't don't, but I'm building a computer.
Now, this computer is specifically for gaming; no schoolwork, no nothing, just gaming. Now, I'm trying to buy parts that are cheap, but effective. (Well, not necessarily cheap, but low priced compared to others.)
I'm currently in the Video Card market, and I'm amazed at the prices. So I went online searching for cheaper prices. I was satisfied, but still pretty amazed. I managed to find something:
ATI Radeon 9800PRO RADEON 9800PRO 128M Video Card
For $136
Now, I'm still pretty much a novice when it comes to computers, so I need help. I want to know if this will work for games such as World of Warcraft or Guild Wars. (Essentially the whole reason I'm building the computer.) So if there are some kind souls out there, help me out!
Thank you. ----------------------- Private First Class Garet Daimun

I know a friend who plays WoW just fine with a 64mb ATI Radeon for a laptop so 128mb should be fine. ----------------------- XO/ESN Corran "Arturus" Hargraves/Nazgul 2/Phoenix Wing/M-SSD Atrus/VE/VEN/(=A=)(=SA=)(=*MA*=)(=JCPA=)(=SCPA=)[MC:1](x2)[SV][BRC][VC:B][LSM][LoC]
"The way of war is a way of deception. When able, feign inability; when deploying troops, appear not to be. When near, appear far; when far, appear near. Lure with bait; strike with chaos. If the enemy is full, be prepared. If strong, avoid him. If he is angry, disconcert him. If he is weak, stir him to pride. If he is relaxed, harry him; if his men are harmonious, split them. Attack where he is unprepared; appear where you are unexpected. This is victory in warfare; it cannot be divulged in advance. Victory belongs to the side that scores most in the temple calculations before battle. Most spells victory; least spells defeat; none, surer defeat. I see it in this way, and the outcome is apparent." -- Sun Tzu

Not the fastest on the market, but it's cheap. Look for something in the 256mb range if you're after gaming. ----------------------- OO/SM Sierra "Talon" Taurus/HC-3/VEHC/VE[BC][IOC][LoC][SoS][BM][CDS][MSM][MoH]

I have a friend who runs a computer store, and he told me to stay away from 256, said 128 was just as good. However if you want to give an oppsoite opinion, please explain. ----------------------- Private First Class Garet Daimun

all he's saying is you'd get a POS 256MB card made by some mediocre company for the same price as a decent 128. He's not saying 256 is worse than 128. ----------------------- =[Arrogant Elitist]=

For the sake of repeating myself (not for argument), I said the 128 was just as good, not that the 256 was better.

No, I'm talking to you. Talon is saying if you want a gaming machine, invest in a good 256MB video card. Your friend is telling you that if you're looking at the good 128MB price range, then don't buy a 256MB one that is in that range because it will perform like garbo. ----------------------- =[Arrogant Elitist]=

Have you looked at an online guide to putting together a comp? I was going to build one myself, but then I read an online guide and just lost my brain. People tell me it's easy once you do it once, but I can see that there's a lot more into building this machine than meets the eye. Actually, it isn't hard at all. If you go to a computer store, you just pick out the parts you want and they tell you if it works.
AS long as you follow the manuals, it's pretty much like any other do it yourself project. (And yes, I have looked at them... They make it seem more complicated than it is.) ----------------------- Private First Class Garet Daimun

I prefer online shops (got everything for my current one at Tiger Direct). You really do learn things as you go. I knew a good deal before I built my current box and I still know that I will be doing some things differently with my next one. Glad to see you're not afraid to
And yeah.. if you buy a shitty 256mb card, a decent 128 will out perform it. If you're looking for the best card, get a decent 256mb one. ----------------------- OO/SM Sierra "Talon" Taurus/HC-3/VEHC/VE[BC][IOC][LoC][SoS][BM][CDS][MSM][MoH]

Well, I already burnt out my budget on my AMD Athlon 64 3200+ processor (well, my budget after what I had already bought), so I'm looking for something hopefully less than $200.
Oh, and just a sidenote, newegg generally seems to be cheaper and delivers faster than TigerMart. ----------------------- Private First Class Garet Daimun

Pricewatch just directs you to other places with good deals. That's how I found TD. It was just easier and a little cheaper to deal with the same company and get everything shipped at once. ----------------------- OO/SM Sierra "Talon" Taurus/HC-3/VEHC/VE[BC][IOC][LoC][SoS][BM][CDS][MSM][MoH]

I would recommend a card from the X800 or X850, the ability to do an upgrade to crossfire technology (same as nvidias sli but more compatible with games). Downside is that you have to use a special mainboard too. ----------------------- Iron Horse Squad

ok.... I work in tech support... nothing big... and unless you've already bought ur video card... i suggest that you veere away from radeon... and go for nvidia geforce. Nvidia cards are specifically made for gaming... so they naturally are the most powerful. I would recommend something starting at the geforce 5600 - depending on your budget. I upgraded last year and i am playing guild wars, half life 2, cs: source, and battlefield 2 on a geforce 6600GT... which is a nice card, and cheap for its value. Newegg would be your best source... with the cheapest price... As for the actuall brand of card... i would recommend Asus or MSI. You can get a MSI geforce 6600 GT for $160 - $180 on newegg. Oh.. um... that is... if you have an agp socket. If its PCI-E, you can get an equivalent. Whatever you do, hope you like it. But i am enjoying this msi geforce nx 6600 gt.
if you have an agp socket... id recommend one of these: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814127150
but if you have PCI-E... heres the counterpart...
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814127147
you will notice that both are slightly more expensive than what you were thinking about... but i guarantee you its worth it. Um... and one last thing... if you do go geforce.... but dont wanna pay for a 6600... DO NOT get a 6200, ive heard they are worse than the cards in the next class down... the geforce 5s.

Ah, ok then. I actually got a free upgrade on my motherboard, my friend works at a computer store and got me a motherboard for my birthday (with the exchange of the old one) which is much better.
And that is a better card, and still within a reasonable price range. Thanks. ----------------------- Private First Class Garet Daimun

hrm, see this is the problem with taking peoples advice, everyone has had different experiances, like in my experiance NVidia is crap, having never owned a good NVidia card, naturaly i'm all for ATI all in all i've found the benchmarks to speak for themselves, some computer shops will run benchmarks with your machine, substituting your parts for a new part, occasionaly they'll embelish the results, but in your case, if you asked them to benchmark two diffrent cards you're thinking of buying for you i dont think they'd do any of that, it might cost a little bit, and they'll try to sell you their stuff, but all in all it is worth it, hardware combinations will make all the diffrence. ----------------------- TRP/SSG Sniping101/4SQD/1PLT/1COM/1BAT/1RGT/VEA/VE [LoR][IH][BoA]

ATI never did themselves a favor on the software end. I had installed three labs and four classrooms full of PCs with Radeon boards. ALL of them, despite my image tweaks, always had video software errors until I dumbed them down to use Windows default drivers.
Most techs have at some point (and that was just my worst experience) been burned by ATI software. They - and I - have no problem with the hardware itself. Then again, I can say the same with NVidia. Hence, that's who I usually recommend.
As noted however, mileage and opinions may vary. And folks, let's try linking these URLs. I did so with the online guide I pointed Garet to. It's just common courtesy if nothing else. ----------------------- PRF/SM Fury/VEA/TADATH/VE [MoH][SCPx2][PoC][SotE:HC][SotE:VEA][MSM][IOC]
