Warning: There is a new virius going around on Yahoo!, AOL, and other popular email websites. I heard this from a friend. If you get an apparently harmless email with the attachment "Life is beautiful," DO NOT OPEN IT!! If you do, everything on your PC's hard drive will be wiped and the hacker will have instantly received your name, address, email address, etc. The hacker's only known name is "Life Owner."
As I said, please be on the alert. If you receive this email with the attachment, DELETE IT AT ONCE!!
(EDIT: This attachment is a Power Point Presentation. The full actual title is " Life is beautiful.pps.")

I don't see how the virus could hack into your computer if it is in PP format. It's an attachment - the viewer would have to physically open their email and open the attachment in order to expose their system to the virus... Unless I'm getting this wrong, then someone correct me. :P -----------------------

That may be Angel but since this is an online organization and by nature our members are online at least some of the time, its good to share information about viruses so we don't get them. Thanks for the heads up Jack, appreciate that. -----------------------

Mircosoft and those other guys are trying to find a way to block the virius from ever making it to a computer, so hopefully that will work. And I don't know how, but my friend's hard drive was shut down due to this new virius. He lost absolutely everything. The second he clicked on the attachment, a message popped up right away, and a split second later, everything was gone. -----------------------

Ha, ha. I don't know how you can do it so fast, but I guess if you have a lot of crap on your computer, like me, it takes a little longer to wipe everything, giving you more time to stop it (if that is possible). Hopefully, Microsoft can nail the damn hacker. -----------------------

nailing the hacker, or stoping the hdd erase, i would think if it took time you could quickly shut off your machine and hopefully when you turned it on it wouldnt recomence erasing, and sence the viruse is based in the email, unless it puts another file on your computer somewhere, and the thing activates, in theory, only when you open the email, all you need to do is never open or just delete the email. . .in theory. i'll admit theres probably problems with this theory. -----------------------

Well, you could delete the email at once, but even if you did open it, the virius wouldn't spread unless you clicked and opened the attachment. So, you'd still be safe if you already opened the email. -----------------------

If the virus is in the attachment, and not the e-mail, then you're screwed. Because the computer probably downloaded the attachment (including the virus), and so it would now be on your computer, and not on the internet. So once you restart, my guess is that it would probably resume erasing. -----------------------

that's why you dont want to get it even started.but doesn't your email provider check for viriuses before you download any attachments? and with such popularity, i'm sure they have updated the virius list. -----------------------

I know a real fast way to cause an HD to go 'blank'.
All you need to do is delete the File Allocation Table.
While your data is still technicly there it might as well not be if that goes bye bye.
You probably wouldn't even notice it unless you had a slow HD and a lot of junk.
Hiding that coding inside a .pps extension would be difficult but not impossible.
Fortunately I believe in duel HDs. Plus they can steal the identity of Why Yeh Assistant Writer Project Copyright Infringement. That's only one of my on-line personas. -----------------------
