Hmm...if I had to advise anyone, I'd say start with the X-Wing series.  You get characters you marginally know and get some of the better writing in the Star Wars universe.

Then, when you get all serious about the plot line after the movies, move onto the Zahn books.

If you are looking for a chronology of books as the storyline goes, head here.

As for my favorite book, I'd either go with I, Jedi or Star by Star.

I have really only read the Star Wars Mission books those are ok you can get them if you join a Star Wars fan club thingy both my brothers joined and they sent you about twenty books in twenty months and they let you get into the book by playing a game of chance with dice and calculations you have to make. Also the books let you get to be Rebels, Bounty Hunters, and Imperials while kind of going in the Chronological order.

Well...  I read the first few X-wing books and couldn't get into them, so basically I read the big novel things...  Like the shield of Lies is good, my personal favorite so far is the New Rebellion.  That one had a good twist at the end I thought, plus it used some of my favorite characters.  If your into that bounty hunter stuff, I know there is a bunch of "Tales of a Bounty Hunter" type books...  Havn't read any lately though.  I'm trying to think of the book with the Hapes Consortium in it...  That ones pretty good as well...

Um, well, I've never read any Star Wars books. But on the favorite book note, I'd have to say that The Killer Angels by Michael Shaara and the original version of Jurassic Park are the best reads.

Hmm sooooo many books. Fury's probably right, start with X-wing and then move to Zahn.

BUT if you really want to get into hardcore star wars reading try the New Jedi Order series. SOOOO good.

For my favorite book i guess i would agree with Star by Star or Unifying Force. Or heck all the Thrawn books. So many good ones.

Star by Star by Troy Denning and is one of the bigger books in NJO. He also has a good book out Tatooine Ghost.

Shazam, you're probably thinking of Courtship of Princess Leia as that takes place mostly on Dathomir or amongst the Hapans.  That's not to say those folks don't show up later.

Point is, some of you have mentioned books in series and that - depending on the series - is not a bad way to get into the readings.  You have a definitive plot that crosses a few books and so you get a little time getting used to the characters without getting too lost trying to figure out the plot.

In any case, enjoy.

I, Jedi Is my fav, just because Corran is one of the coolest characters. I also really enjoyed the Wraith Squadron part of the X-Wing series, especially when Kell and those 2 A-Wings pretend to be the Millenium Falcon and draw an ImpStar II away from the rebel base. I laughed my ass off at that.

Anything by Stackpole is good.

His earlier works for the SW galaxy were a little less spectacular then I,Jedi but they were still good books.

Other then that I don't care for many of the books because they rely way too heavily on some real cheap and unentertaining way to resolve the plot.  When Stackpole decided to let Corran go off with his uber jedi powers at least he made it entertaining.

I don't care for how Zahn stopped Thrawn, it seemed very contrary to me to how he had set up Thrawn in the previous books.  Basicly he set Thrawn up as a NOT stupid typical villian and had him do a stupid typical villian thing anyway because he realized that no one in the New Republic had been set up to be his match.

I need to get myself I, Jedi. I have only Children of the Jedi (Barbara Hambly), which I have not read all the way through. I've only read three Galaxy of Fear books.

As far starting a series, I was told that the Thrawn series of books was the way to go.

I'm gonna have to go with the Dark Force Rising trilogy by Timothy Zhan. Whoever made the comment about missing out on the greatest book ever written I don't think is going to miss out on too terribly much by not reading a couple star wars books.

Jacen would have been a better choice indeed...  Who else from the world of Kashyk are we going to be in contact with now...  Well...  Now that I think of it, Jaina is the one I really hate.
I read children of the Jedi a long time ago, need to re-read it I suppose.  Along with the other series on my bookshelf...  My cousin was a huge starwars fan, when he went of to colledge he gave me is collection of books...  Lots and Lots of books.  Lol.

have you started some new "must-only-use-one-word-to-reply" exercise or something? its gettin kinda odd.

anyway your right about it being unlikely, but just so far as to say its unlikely i'll ever even get that far depending on if i can ever find book 11 to the WoT series, as far as i can tell it dosent even exist, that'd realy suck if robert jordon was dead and this was as far as he got, i might go kill something.

First things first, what ever any of you do, do NOT read Planet of Twilight, the most boring Star Wars book I've ever read, and just horribly put together.

It's hard for me to choose my favorites, because I like so many of them. First I'd have to say that my favorites include all of the Zhan books, ie: the Dark Force Rising Trilogy, the Hand of Thrawn Duology, and Survivor's Quest. My other favorite is Star By Star in the NJO series, great book in my opinion. Another of my favorites is Darth Maul: Shadow Hunter, isnanly good, somewhat short, but very well put together.

I thought about putting down Shadow Hunter, but I was kind of mad about the ending and didn't bother to put it down.  But otherwise, it was very well put together like you said.  Bit sad at the end that the dude dies...  But overall it was a pretty good story.

Yeah, I didn't like the ending to that one either.

Then again, he knew stuff he shouldn't have and had to die.

Another great character lost to continuity.  Good book though.
