At some point I was wanting to make a disc of cover tunes, specifically of 70s or 80s songs, that would at least be capable of being listened to.

For examples, I guess The Ataris cover of "Boys of Summer" and Goldfinger's "99 Red Balloons" come to mind.

Throw down what covers you would put into a mix like that.  Why? One, I'm having a brain fart moment and can't think of many.  Two, you're already reading this post this far, so you obviously don't have anything better to do.

Another good idea would be "I Ran". A lot of people have done it, and it's a good song too. Also, the song about the guy who believes that he can fly. That's a good one. Was that by R. Kelly?

The Wallflowers did a version of "Heroes," and the Greatful Dead have a version of "Desolation Row." Can't remember who the original artist of "Heroes" was, but "Desolation Row" was first done by Bob Dylan. I think.

The Chieftains have an awsome song called "Shady Grove," don't know who wrote it. Maybe Ricky Skaggs? Does he even write new songs, or just use old ones? Oh well. "Shady Grove" is still awsome. Just try singing it, I gaurantee you'll get tongue tied at least once.

And don't forget Wierd Al's "Amish Paradise." Living near Lancaster myself, I get a kick oughta the music video. Heh.

A fun cover song is Throwdown - Baby Got Back.  A hardcore band covering a rap song... priceless. 

I'd skip the Ataris cover, it blows.  Lagwagon does a cover of Brown Eyed Girl but that's not too good either.

Strung Out does a good cover of Bark at the Moon, might want to check that out.
