How can the lounge be safe from political discussions when I am hanging around?
I'm not really concerned about this. For one thing, it's California. For another, there is only one guy running who I agree with, and he doesn't have a prayer. Still, it would be pretty good to have Arnold elected, that way he can keep quoting his movies in political speeches. ----------------------- LCM_FL_ JMac/Kaph 3-1/(=A=)(=SA=)(=MA)(=FOCE=)(MC1)

In our day and age we like to blame the person in the highest appearant position of authority for our problems.
This is true for Jessie Ventura, George W. Bush(Both of them).
This is not entirely fair. While I do not agree with what Jr has done with his plans in the middle east, work weak, increasing deficiet spending, or even his tax break plan not everything in the economy is his fault.
Jessie Ventura was blocked at every turn by a spitefull legislature. The man actaully had a quite a bit of politics I agreed with and his only fault was that he wasn't a member of one of the two parties.
Morale is:
Even I get caught up in trying to blame a single person, but come on no one person can mess up that badly.
If I had my say Clint Eastwood would be a figure head president.
In my little fantasy world movie stars actually would make decent politicians. They're already used to working with a staff that deals with all the things they don't want to, they're experts at putting up a facade for the public, and they know how to read a script. ----------------------- Great Death Leader of the Fallen

I have this problem where I keep expecting the people in charge of critical aspects of my life to be capable of real thoughts.
To actually give up that last illusion and put some failed sitcom freak or old actor in nominal charge of this country would be to just completely give up on the system.
And remember, presidents are not supposed to be figureheads. Remember Eisenhower? Guy wouldn't listen to anyone and he managed to do more than okay. Problem is, I had to reach back that far to get a fairly non-political, effective president to make an example of.
And you actually want a world where this is the norm/
As far as blame and credit go, yes, Bush should be held accountable for things both good and bad that happen under his watch. Otherwise, we spend all day nitpicking on what is directly his responsibility all the way to things that are not his to claim. Its just how things are done and unfair or not, that is the perception we vote under. Presidents always claim the good and try to shush the bad. It didn't work for me when I was 5 years old with my mom, and it shouldn't work for a national leader with his constituents either.
You are right when you say no one person can screw up a situation single-handedly, but we only vote for one person, not the staff that may have done most of the screwing-up. That being the case, that makes them target of opportunity No. 1. ----------------------- PRF/LG Fury/VEA/TADATH/VE [SCP][PoC][SotE:HC][SotE:VEA][IOC]

Instead of going off on a rant about what the president himself actually does rather then attaches his name to something one of his cabinet members is resposible for I think I'll just nip that in the bud myself.
In our political system as flawed and imperfect as it is there can be shifts in power. It has happened to every president who has had a second term ever since the two term limit was impossed.
That's why I support two revolutionary ideas:
Term limits for congress.
Vote for the cabinet.
Neither is a perfect solution but hey if we want perfect we ain't gonna get it. ----------------------- Great Death Leader of the Fallen

Can you honestly say that anything having to do with Parliament is sane? I put them on sometimes just for comic relief. They yell, they boo each other, they hiss, they cheer, it's almost like WWF! I keep expecting men on steriods in spandex to come running out and start punching people. I wish our own congress could be that forthright, but still, that's pushing it.
Anyway, while you can put some of the blame on Dubbya, it isn't quite fair to lay it all on him. Take the economy for instance. That is based on trends that form years before. We took a major hit when the towers went down as well. If the trends continue through the end of his second term, then yell and scream. ----------------------- LCM_FL_ JMac/Kaph 3-1/(=A=)(=SA=)(=MA)(=FOCE=)(MC1)

Dubbya may not get a second term. You're probably too young to remember this (hell, I should be too) but this is very much the same situation as when Dubbya's dad was up for re-election. The Democratic party was in shambles and there was no clear candidate to take office. What happened? We had one of the best president's the US has seen in a long time. Bad person, probably. Good president, can't logically dispute that. And while it's true you can't blame the ENITIRE collapse of our economy on Dubbya, things were going downhill before 9-11. Let's face it, Republican's on the whole don't care about john q. taxpayer. Not that Democrat's are much better, but at least they act like they care to get the votes.

I'm peachy, thanks for asking.
As for the whole "high ratings" concept, some new numbers suggest a 49% approval rating. That's not a high mark in any sense of the word, unless you are the ghost of Herbert Hoover.
Yeah, I think there are going to be some large issues the Democrats need to tackle before even considering winning an election, the fact that Clark and Kerry beat out Bush in other recent polls (granted, by pitifully small margins) means that my fascist Republican friends and in-laws have stopped gloating as much as they have in recent months.
Will Bush win again? Yeah, unless he sticks his foot in his mouth. Should he? No way. Last I checked we needed foreign nations to like us so they won't shoot at us and buy our products instead. With him in charge, that concept gets turned on its head. Not to mention the whole I CAN'T GET A FREAKING JOB WITH HIM IN CHARGE! situation.
Truth is, we need Jimmy Carter and about 500,000 voting inspectors to begin setting up shop in Florida NOW in order to be ready to avoid a repeat of 2000. Maybe California too by the looks of it.

I think the 47%(?) of California that voted for Arnold made the right choice. Think about it... Arnold is so loaded that he can hire the best consultants of various fields to help him guide the state into properity. But in the end... who really cares about California if they don't live in California. I know I don't. ----------------------- Lance Corporal Coris "Mars" Swift

Last I saw it was 49-50% of the vote.
Anyway, I preferred Arnold over everyone else because he's the only one up there (that's reasonable) that's not a politician. From hearing what he had to say (and his actions in the past), I truly believe that he's for the people, especially the kids. The afterschool programs and Inner City Games are a real plus for me.
My only concern, now, is if he can get a budget together within that 5-week(?) time period. ----------------------- Cleric "Cosmic" Vor'soth

While I disagree with some of his ideas, his conservative outlook on money should help California. He is a good man for the job.
Allow me to make a retraction. Rev. Jackson is not contesting the election. He promised to during the election, but Arnold's landslide made the effort pointless. ----------------------- LCM_FL_ JMac/Kaph 3-1/(=A=)(=SA=)(=MA)(=FOCE=)(MC1)
