Ghost 1/30

The wind outside continued to howl as the snowstorm raged. Ghost Team huddled inside what had once been a house. After assassinating General Vuxner and Governor Hornby, Skarr had ordered them to begin looking for shelter. They had found a nearly intact house a few miles away from the intersection where the battle took place. Skarr had the team inspect the weapons they had scavenged. Only one or two of the rifles were completely serviceable. The rest had been disassembled for spare parts and ammunition. The strike leader hated having to scavenge in order to keep their weapons and ammo in order, but this was as well stocked as they could get in the winter wastes. He started as his comm crackled to life, “First Lieutenant Skarr, this is HQ do you copy?”

“HQ, this is Skarr,” the strike leader replied.

“Standby, First Lieutenant. Your orders are on the way. Transmitting to your wrist link now.” The comm conversation cut there. Skarr snorted, HQ wasn’t feeling chatty today. He surmised that it had something to do with the distant sounds of battle he could hear. Skarr only had to wait a minute or two for his orders to appear on the wrist link. Colonel Sorak wanted a power plant taken care of in the industrial district. Skarr read further. Both Ghost and Wraith were being sent into the subway tunnels with Zombie Platoon. He switched off his wrist link to address his team.

“Alright, Ghosts. We’re going to have some action. But we’re going to have to play nice, ladies and gentlemen. A squad from Zombie Platoon will be with us along the way.” The members of the team traded glances before looking back to Skarr. “I know, we’re not used to help but it is what it is. Our mission is a power plant deep in the industrial district. It is also Thrawn territory. We’ll be using the subway system against the Thrawnists this time.

“And to make things even more interesting, we have to be largely careful in the tunnels. They’ve been known to collapse during bombing run and are very unstable. Which means, no grenades. No explosives. And absolutely no slugthrowers. Blasters only, people. Am I understood?” A chorus of agreement rose from the team. “Good! Let’s move out!”

The Ghosts moved as one and filed out the door to the house. Despite the helmet protecting his eyes, Skarr still squinted as the wind and snow whipped around him. The entrance to the subway tunnels were not far from their position, but it would take a very long time to reach the power plant once they were inside. The strike leader warned his team to be vigilant. The patrols would still be roaming the area, searching for the assassins.

The snowstorm made it slightly easier for the squad to evade the patrols, although it did give them less time to hide when a patrol came into sight. Skarr could not wait to get into an area with better visibility. Even though the subway tunnels would be mostly pitch black, Ghost was equipped with night vision. When the team neared the subway tunnels, Skarr stopped them. Zombie Platoon would be hidden nearby and they would be alert for enemies.
He prodded Ghost into slowly and cautiously making their way down the street. They were alert for anything. Without warning, two squads of troops came pouring out of the alleyways, blasters at the ready. One man stepped forward to meet Ghost. He was of middling height and a muscular build. Exactly what Skarr would expect out of stormtroopers.

“What’s the passphrase?” the man called out.

Skarr chuckled and gestured at the snowstorm, “I’m dreaming of a white Christmas!”

“Don’t get too excited. All you’re getting is coal,” was the man’s reply.

Skarr strode forward and clasped the man’s hand. “First Lieutenant Norith Skarr of Ghost Team, Commander of Phantom Platoon.”

“Sergeant Major William Carter of Voodoo Team, Commander of Zombie Platoon.” Carter said. He motioned to Zombie platoon and they began walking with Ghost to the entrance of the subway tunnels. “I hear we’re to help you get to your destination.”

“That’s right. Has Wraith gotten here yet?”

“Negative. We’re waiting for them now.”

Skarr sighed, “Then we’ll head into the tunnels first. You want to come along Sergeant Major?”

Carter nodded and walked off to discuss the situation with what Skarr guessed to be the other squad leader. He watched as Carter pointed out various positions and gestured to Ghost Team. The other squad leader saluted and ordered his squad back into cover. Skarr guessed the remaining troopers was Voodoo Team. Including Carter, that put Voodoo Team at seven people. That made 14 troops in all. Skarr ordered them all to fall in behind him with Carter at his side.

Norith took a deep breath and motioned for them to enter the dark of the tunnels.

Wraith: 1/30

Wraith had moved on, further away from the burning rubble of the destroyed FOB. They had found a decent enough building to rest up in. Dusk decided to take first watch. He had his new EE-3 resting on the window sill overlooking the streets below. The room they were in was quite barren, it appeared to have been burned out as there were scorch marks along the walls, floor, and roof, but it was the most structurally sound in the building with a clear view of the street.

As the trooper looked over the streets he found it had a strange sense of beauty, the snow falling over the scarred city, wiping the blemishes away. Even with the calming seen, Dusk knew not to let himself fall into a sense of security.  The Major had decided to stay awake and keep watch also. “Major, you should rest; I can keep watch on my own.”

“I’m fine, I don’t sleep much anymore. I’ve gotten used to it.” The XO replied, continuing to watch the door.

Not wishing to follow the topic further, Dusk went back to watching the street. “Strike team Besh, this is HQ.” There was a brief pause as blaster fire could heard in the background. “We’ll be sending orders to your data-pads.”

Major Katash pulled out here device he read over the message she’d received. As everyone was woken from their half sleep by the call, the XO began to speak. “Ok, Wraiths, were going to be hitting a power plant deep inside Thrawnist territory.” Everyone could tell there was more. “We’ll also be working with a squad from Zombie Platoon and moving through the old subway systems, any questions? “ No one spoke, “Good, let’s move.”

    *                      *                       *

They moved cautiously through the allies and streets, as they neared the rendezvous point a squad came around the corner. “Wraiths?” One of the men called, he appeared to be the SL.

“Yes, and you would be?” Havock called back.

“Virus Squad, we’ll be escorting you through the tunnels.”

The two groups moved towards each other. “What’s your name Sergeant?”

“I’m Senior Sergeant Dalen. “ He said as he removed his helmet.

Sergeant Dalen had a shaved head and appeared to be in his mid-thirties, his most distinguishing features was the large imperial symbol tattooed on half of his and a scar over one of his eyes. On second glance Dusk saw he also had a cybernetic eye.

“Glad you’re with us Dalen.”

“Major, Ghost has already gone down into the tunnels; also we have a transfer into your Strike Team, his name’s Reign Stryfe, from Corpse squad, they were wiped out, he’s the only survivor.”

A trooper approached and saluted. “Ma’am.”

“At ease, go introduce yourself to the rest of the team. And for the rest of you, we’re heading out in ten.”

Wraith  2/30

The snow fell lightly on the broken landscape of the subway entrance. The area around the opening was clear as though it had once functioned as a courtyard. Pieces of broken buildings laid scattered around the bloated bodies, waiting in the snow for their final destination. Makeshift barricades had been set up at each of the possible entry points to the duracreet courtyard with handfuls of tired troopers manning each one.

A blonde woman approached the east barricade with a cig hanging lit out of her mouth. She had a long blade attached to her back along with a rifle and standard issue pistol. She gave each trooper a cocky nod as she passed them on her path to Havock.

"Jack."

"Major." Jack removed the cig only long enough to flick the excess ash from its tip, before replacing it. "You're needed back at command."

Havock glanced over at Dusk and Dalen who were taking and getting the squad prepped for their trip into the subway tunnels. "I can't go back, I'm in this now."

Jacaranda, or Jack as she preferred to be called, had been Havock's liaison since she became XO. Jack wasn't good at following orders but she respected Havock and had been loyal. She also seemed to enjoy the variety of tasks she got to dive into as Havock's liaison.

"With respect Major, the Prefect ordered you back. Your mission was completed, this is grunt work and no place for the XO of the army. Honestly, you've done your time on bloody battlefields and smelly underground tunnels, let some of us have fun now." Jack cocked her rifle and continued to check her gear as she spoke.

"What about Wraith?"

Jack looked up confused for a moment then muttered a few words under her breath and felt around for a lost datapad. "Almost forgot about that. Garryll had orders, Sergeant Dusk is SL effective immediately. Psycho's gonna live but he's out of commission for a while docs say."

"Jack you realize that none of that gear is SCOPE standard issue." Havock looked back over to the young Sergeant speaking to the Virus SL and hoped he was up to the challenge. "You'll keep an eye on him."

"You are such a softy." Jack rolled her eyes and slapped the XO on the shoulder. "Now get your cute ass back to the command center boss."

Havock watched solemnly as Jack joined Wraith and Virus  and walked over to the speeder bike waiting for her.

Jack adjusted her opical HUD and made sure she had the nightvision sensor aligned.

"Hey you Dusk?"

The young man raised an eyebrow and walked over suspiciously. He was about to speak when Jack tossed a datapad at Dusk's chest. "Congrats you are the new SL, I'd buy you a round but....yea."

"What?"

"Oh and Havock had to report back so you get me instead." Jack tapped Dusk's helmet. "Cheer up, I'm so much more fun."

"Where is your gear?"

Jack rolled her eyes. "Look, the Major got me in this stuffy SCOPE, and my HUD is five by five, I'll put on the ugly helmet when we are ready to go."

Meet Jack, my trusty NPC. She'll be accompanying you fine Wraiths for now. If you need to learn more about Jackie girl her wiki is: http://www.vastempire.com/wiki/Jacaranda, she is a Sergeant by rank but you can just call her Jack.

Jack is brash and seems to always have a sarcastic comment. Enjoy!

Ghost Post #2

Terre was standing to one side, her pistols at her side and a rifle she picked up slung across her back. They were inside the tunnels, and had just met up with Zombie Platoon. Therex was still mumbly and grumbly about his inability to use his beloved explosives, and had his shoulders hunched. Terre chuckled softly, kicking his boot lightly before going to meet up with a shorter trooper off to one side who kept looking at her.

“Terre Rae, Lance Corporal, Strike Team Auresh,” she said, extending a hand. The trooper shook it.

“Vidia Corinth, Corporal, Zombie Platoon,” the trooper replied. Terre smiled. Another girl. Good. She glanced back at Therex and saw another trooper standing beside Therex. She nodded approvingly, then turned back to her new partner. She gave her a quick once over, noting the heavy rifle on her back, the closed body position, the head held high.

“Recent promotion?” Terre asked.

“Yeah. You too?” Vidia replied.

“Yeah.” Terre saw movement out of the corner of her eye and turned quickly, her HUD picking up a small rodent skittering away. She relaxed again, then slung her pack off her shoulder, catching it and offering the small girl beside her a ration bar.

“Thanks,” the girl murmured, taking her helmet off and ripping open the packaging. She had brilliant red hair that caught the small light that shone in the dark tunnels. Terre couldn’t be sure, but she thought Vidia’s eyes might have been… Violet.

“Not a problem,” Terre said, digging through the pack. “You smoke?”

“Nah. You can, if you want. I’m not so self-righteous as to be offended.” Vidia took another bite, munching contentedly. “But, if you’ve got a flask, I’d take a sip.” Terre grinned, then offered her the whiskey from her hip. Vidia took a small sip, giving the flask back. “That’s great. Thanks so much.”

“I take care of my comrades,” Terre said. Vidia smiled, stashing the empty ration wrapper in a pouch on her belt. Terre gave her armor a closer look. It was worse off and more cobbled together than the armor Terre wore now. “Hey… You need some new pieces?”

Vidia blushed, her face burning red in Terre’s HUD. “I can take care of it later…” she murmured, embarrassed.

“No, come on. We can swap some armor now and fix yours up later.” Terre spun her gently, then took off her right shin guard, her left gauntlet, and a shoulder pad. Vidia took off the same armor, trading them for Terre’s.

“Thanks again,” Vidia murmured, clipping and sliding them into place. Terre clapped her on the shoulder, then Skarr gave the order to move out.

“I’ve got your back, Vidia,” Terre said, drawing her pistols. Vidia grinned, then slammed her helmet on and drew her rifle, leading the way into the dark tunnels. The HUDs gave a soft glow, illuminating parts of the tunnels in front of them, but not very far ahead. They came to a three-way branch and stopped.

“Alright, Ghosts. Split off three ways, keep in contact, and stay with your partner,” Skarr ordered. “If possible, take another Ghost and another Zombie with you.”

Terre and Vidia wound up going down the right tunnel alone, traveling with Vidia slightly in front of Terre. Terre kept turning and checking, then running ahead a couple steps. A steady dripping came from somewhere, then a loud squeal and a growl. Terre saw a bristling shadow run across her line of vision.

“V-Vidia?”

“I saw it too… It’s just an animal.” A gulp. “I think.”

“Let’s keep moving… If we have to, we’ll turn back.” Terre moved ahead a couple steps, Vidia just behind her, when she heard Vidia shriek. Terre turned to find Vidia tugging against something holding onto her ankle. A long tentacle snaked out of the garbage, wrapped around Vidia’s leg, and was trying to pull her towards it. Terre fired a couple shot at it, and it jerked, releasing Vidia. Terre helped her up and ran her a few meters ahead. “Are you alright?” she asked, inspecting the armor.

“Y-yeah… It was just… Sudden.” Vidia inspected the slime that clung to the once-white armor. “That’s disgusting…”

“I’m sure we’ll see worse,” Terre chuckled, helping her stand again and moving on, walking just a little closer together, working just a little more in tandem. Terre smiled. She had another comrade.

They reached a collapsed pile of rubble and rock that blocked their exit. “Terre and Vidia to Skarr.”

“Go ahead, Terre.”

“Skarr, there’s nothing out this way except local nightlife. The end of the tunnel is collapsed, we’re heading back.”

“Good. We’ll see you soon. Skarr out.”

Terre nodded, turning to Vidia. “Shall we go?”

Ghost 3/30

HammerHead followed his squad into the tunnel, expecting a fairly casual walk. The two squads halted in the tunnel. People all of began preparations for the hike. Skarr walked over to HammerHead and pulled of his helmet.

"You know as well as I do you can't use that slugthrower of yours. I know you keep it with you for personal reasons, but I'm going to ask that you keep it unloaded."

"I...I understand." HammerHead proceded to pull the revolver out of his holster, pour the rounds in his hand, and turn the gun over in his hand so the handle faced Skarr.

"What are you doing private?"

"It's simple, I don't trust myself."

Skarr took the weapon HammerHead, and tucked it away. Skarr put his hand on his shoulder and said "You'll be fine, you are packing enough fire power as it is."

Skarr then put on his helmet and walked over the other squad leader.
Hammer dejectedly leened against a wall. All of a sudden, cutting thrrow the sound of the others around, came a familiar voice.

"You Mandalorian son of a bitch!"

HammerHead swung around ready to deck the man who spoke, but stopped as soon as he saw who it was. "Duke, you smug bastard!"

The two took a swing at each other, which ended with them arm wrestling in mid-air. The men struggled, and Duke's arm began to descend. "What's wrong Duke, out of practive?"

"No, I just don't want to hurt yah' feelins," he said with a sinister grin.
Eventually he lost, his arm descending to the point where HammerHead had the opportunity to break his arm. "Alright, alright, I yeild." As HammerHead let go of his longtime friend, he noticed something that he didn't see when his comrade walked over.

"Duke, what Happened to your leg?"

"Ah, that. Well, I was giving covering fire to some guys from my squad while we were trying to take a hill. The guys on the top of the hill saw me, and used  some heavy weapons to fire on my position. I lost my left leg, and my right hand."

As HammerHead thought about what his friend just told him, he decided to lighten the mood with sarcasm. "Well, you never could be stealthy."

As the two prepared to get into another arm wrestling match, Skarr ordered them to move out. HammerHead and Duke took the tunnel to the far left, as did Therex and his partner.  The tunnel was quite dark, and was filled with small puttles, and the occasional vermin. Memories of his horrific expirience with the mutants started to flow through HammerHead's conciousness as he headed down the dark tunnel.

As he heard a strange creaking noise from just ahead of him, HammerHead reached for the former location of his revolver, and was filled with deep regret to find that it wasn't there. He fear growing, Hammer decided it would be better if he got a firm grip on his Heavy E-11. If trouble comes, I can just blow it's fracking head off.

Duke was having his own troubles, as he stepped in some sort of thick gelatinous substance, and was having troupe getting off his boot. He tried to continue walking, and slipped on the goop, falling into a puddle. The loud splash was accompanied by chuckles from the other troopers, and then followed by a strange but very lowed growling sound from farther up in the tunnel.

The troopers, now all frightened, stared blankly into the darkness. The waited, as if expecting a massive monster to lurk forward and crush them with its massive claws. However, nothing happened, and the black darkness remained untouched. And so, after much hesitation, the group moved on.

As the traveled down the tunnel,  the encountered a foul smell. The acrid stench of rotting flesh met their nostrils through their helmets. As they moved on further, they found the source of the horrid smell. A rotting body, covered in rats in flies, with its arm extended towards what appeared to be a blaster. Pieces of white armor scorched black with blaster fire were located around the body, and an E-11 was position write out of his reach.

"Pour bastard" muttered Therex's partner. "I wonder what side he was on."

Well, whichever side he was on, I don't think we'll be able to find out.

Feeling remorse for the pour fate of the man, HammerHead moved down the tunnel hoping to get out of the cloud of evil that surrounded the corpse. However, HammerHead was met with the opposite of his expectations as the stench became almost unbearable. To his horror, many more bodies came into the light, each seeming to suffer the same fate as the man behind him.

HammerHead turned on his com in hopes of getting a response. "Skarr, we seemed to have made a discovery."

Fear is just an excuse for someone who is to lazy to take action.
Bravery is a fools excuse for running at something without taking time to think or strategize.
Courage is being able to man up and face a problem, no matter how large or difficult it may be, and take it down.

Wraith 3/30

Reign sighted in down the road.  Senior Sergeant Dalen had thrown up a closed fist and clicked his throat mic twice to let Virus know to spread out. All of Zombie platoon preferred to communicate through clicks in their throat mics to reduce the chance of a breach in comm security.

Reign had dove for cover slamming his body against a piece of rubble and looking down his rifle.  Their HUDs were showing another Army unit approaching them from the front but transponder signals could be faked.  All troopers were taught in basic not to trust anything that hadn't been verified with their own eyes.

Dalen pulled off his helmet as he approached the leader of the approaching armored individuals. After a brief exchange a click on the throat mic told Virus that the new arrivals were allies.

Dalen motioned for Reign to come to him.

"Yes Senior Sergeant?"

"Reign you're being transferred to Wraith."

Reign was glad he had his helmet on. His jaw had dropped at the very sound of the squads name.  In basic training you heard about the specialized squads.  Most troopers only ever dreamed of being a part of one of the best.  Names like Ghost and Wraith carried heavy weight with the average trooper. To wear the screaming skull of Wraith would be the highest honor bestowed on Reign in his short career.

"I know you just lost your first squad and it has been hard for you. This battle probably hasn't even given you the time to fully process the loss of your team mates. You need to find roots in this Army.  This new squad will be your family.  Learn them and love them, they are all you have."

All Reign could do was say, "Aye, aye Senior Sergeant."

He grabbed his combat pack and moved toward his new squad and family. Halfway between the two squads Quake grabbed his arm.

Quake was a monster of a man.  He had skin thicker than armor plating and muscles that were the same size as Reign's head.  Quake was probably the hardest charging trooper that Reign would ever meet.  He would take a blaster bolt for any trooper in his squad.  This was demonstrated by the many blaster scars up and down his arms. He could walk through the fire and flames and would to save his friends.

"Reign stay strong.  Remember that you're greatest resource is your team.  Without them you are worthless. They, without you, cannot function.  You are one body. Do not forget that, no matter what may transpire between you and your team."

Reign shook his fellow troopers hand and turned without a word to continue walking.

He walked up to Major Katash and snapped off a salute.

“Ma’am.”

“At ease, go introduce yourself to the rest of the team. And for the rest of you, we’re heading out in ten.”

Reign walked into his new squad ready now, for whatever was to come.

Corporal… the young slicer was thinking to himself about the message he received on his Datapad. He was certain that there is going to be some special ceremony for everyone who received a commendation, medal or a promotion. But the newly promoted officer couldn’t care less about such assemblies. He would attend of course, but he wasn’t looking forward to the event. What mattered is the present, and that they had to destroy that power plant.

“Hey dude. I guess we’ll pair up.”

“I guess we will. Mox’s my name.” Mox nodded to the Zombie.

“What?” surprise could clearly be heard in the man’s tone “The Mox?”

“What do you mean, ‘The Mox’?” the young corporal said, trying to figure why the man seemed so familiar “Have we met?”

“Well…” the man said as he took off his helmet “What do you think?”

Suddenly he realised who he was talking to, and the memories of their operations together rushed into his mind. The body language, the voice and most importantly the face brought him back to the moments when he was just starting his real undercover missions. At the time the least experienced agents were often bundled up into fake mercenary groups, and Mox was once in the same undercover squad as the man who stood before him.

“Gav?” Mox muttered in disbelief. The man grinned as he put his helmet back on “But… they said you got KIA…”

“Well… they’re not going to say that one of their top agents, who was training the other agents, deserted right?” the man said but his tone suddenly turned serious “What about you? What are you doing here?”

“Officially? Well, the NR said no official word, apparently I stopped existing. No idea what’s going on, and frankly I don’t care... I was placed here about 2 years ago and… things changed…” Mox said as he was quickly thinking over whether he should tell Gavin Darsten about giving up on the New Republic.

“And?...” the man asked impatiently. Mox started wondering whether the man would give him away and quickly continued.

“I was discovered. Luckily the pair that found out about me were kind enough not to tell anyone about it, and then to disappear.”

“I see…” the past New Republican said as Skarr spoke up.

“Alright, Ghosts. Split off three ways, keep in contact, and stay with your partner. If possible, take another Ghost and another Zombie with you.”

“Guess we can go together.”

The group quickly split up and the largest group, consisting of Mox, Jamasis, Skarr and other Zombies started traversing through the middle tunnel. The nightvision mode in the SCOPE helmet was doing its job perfectly and Mox could clearly see nearly everything. It seemed weird to Mox for Terre and a Zombie to go on their own into a tunnel, since 14 troopers could be easily divided into 3 groups, but he dared not to question his SLs’ motives. Not after Joamer… The group was moving quickly and stealthily. Surprisingly Mox couldn’t see anything unusual or suspicious. Well… We are in the tunnels controlled by the Vast Empire… I doubt we will find a lot here. We’ll probably have to split up again…. Mox continued to search the plane of vision for anything out of place but after a few minutes Hammer’s voice boomed through the ComLinks.

“Skarr, we seemed to have made a discovery.”

“Roger that, what sort of discovery?” Skarr replied

“A lot of pretty decayed bodies.” HammerHead’s voice came through. “As in, we can’t identify them.”

“Hold on…” Skarr said as he brought up his datapad. He seemed to be checking through the maps as he was muttered to himself. After a moment he spoke again “There is a personnel tunnel connecting the two tunnels not too far from here. We will meet you there.”

After a prolonged while an acknowledgement came from HammerHead and the group was moving again. After a few minutes of hurried walking the group was already at the mentioned personnel tunnel, but it seemed to be partially caved in.

“Maybe we can squeeze through?” one of the Zombies asked

“And get crushed if a bombing raid would come?” another one replied

“She’s right, we can’t go through it like that. Looks like…” Skarr said as he looked back at his Datapad “…well, the tunnels actually connect together later on… and the distance is shorter than if we had to backtrack.”

“We may try to dig our way through… it may only be the entrance that’s blocked…” Mox said as he crouched in front of the partially caved-in tunnel.

“No, it’s already too unstable… it could recave-in at any time…” another Zombie said, scepticism apparent in the tone of his voice.

“He’s right, Mox. Let’s go.” Skarr motioned the group forward as he put away his Datapad.

It seems the 3 groups we split into are very unproportionate(4, 2, everyone else) but meh.

‘How is it even possible? No one can possibly be that unlucky for it to happen twice, how is it even possible?’

As was usually the case Karash was wrapped up in his own mind rather than paying attention to what was actually going on around him; he had been doing it for so long it had become second nature to only catch the essential parts of conversations and orders. What worried him was the fact that he had somehow ended up in another disaster bound squad, considering the number of former RAIDERS in the squad it should not have been surprising. Now that Dusk was in command it was only a matter a time before several of the newer members of the squad went mad and one or two of them died.

“I thought I would know one of you, aren’t you the weird and miserable one?” Jack, Havock’s pet, knew she could easily peeve Karash and wasted no time in doing so.

“Why the hell did they send you? Are they determined to get us all killed? And it is lovely to see you again too.” Karash hissed.

“I can tell this is going to be fun besides I enjoy a good fight.” Jack spoke as confidently as she always did.

“The first SL is gone before I had a chance to let him knew exactly what I thought of him, then they send out your keeper and then take her back before I can let her know what I think of her, it would have been just like old times. Now they send you. It is like replacing a walking corpse with psychotic dog that has just been allowed of its leash.” Karash marked the end of their conversation with a loud huff.

There had been a few occasions in the past when Karash had been forced to interact with Jack. She was just as insane as Havock, which is why they worked well together; the only difference was that Jack gave into the insanity slightly more often than her boss. Considering the amount of new people that were in the squad it was surprising that Karash was so comfortable. Usually new people made his skin crawl but the new members of the squad did not seem to be too annoying and the people of Virus squad were going to be a temporary annoyance at worst. Though thoughts could not linger, the squads had reached the entrance to the tunnels and something did not seem right.

“This is it.” The SL of Virus squad had an eerie voice; in fact they all seemed to be slightly off kilter.

“I do not like the look of this.” The medic almost whispered.

“But it looks so welcoming, why would we not walk into an enclosed space potentially filled with enemy troops? Or are you scared of the dark?” Jack continued to poke at Karash.

“We don’t have time to discuss the pros and cons, Ghost have already moved ahead and we have a job to do.” Dusk spoke with a new found authority, “Just be ready and keep close together.”

The tunnels were just as uninviting as they appeared from the outside. Although they were shielded from the worst of the weather there still appeared to be a breeze that would occasionally grow from whistle to a howl. There did not appear to be any signs of life nor was there the distant sound of a battle, that meant that either Ghost were proceeding without any trouble or they were all dead. The thought of Jack tripping over the corpse of Mox brought a smirk to Karash’s face that was quickly wiped away by the shout of a squad mate. There was a body.

“Medic!” Dalen shouted.

“Yes!” Karash and one of the Virus troopers shouted in unison.

For a moment the two stood looking at one another in a clear state of bemusement, rarely had Karash been forced to share his duties with another medic and on the occasion that it did happen, it did not end well.

“Aww, he found a friend? They have been looking for a mate, perhaps his species will survive now.” Jack was trying to hold back laughter, she was failing miserably.

“I think I had better deal with this.” The Virus medic spoke pompously.

“Well then think again, I am more than capable of looking at a corpse.” Karash was becoming annoyed with the Virus trooper.

“How do you know it is a corpse?” The man’s voice was mixed with curiosity and impatience.

“Oh please, I could tell it was dead as soon as I saw it.” Karash’s voice oozed arrogance.

“Stimz, is he one of ours?” Delan seemed slightly taken back by the two medics’ competitive dialogue.

“Of course it is not one of ours . . . what a stupid name.” The Wraith medic smirked.

“It does not look like it sir, he looks like he has been down here for a while.” Stimz seemed determined to remain professional.

“Watching you two is going to be so fun, you should know I am rooting for you Karash.” Jack was still failing to hold back laughter as the group moved off once again.

‘They should have left us with the walking corpse. . .’

However that body ended up there, it did not seem likely that it was as a result of the current conflict but it made both squads pay slightly more attention to their surroundings. It was clear that they could end up being in those tunnels for quite some time and they were all determined to make sure the tunnels would not become their tombs.

“I am a much better medic than him, Stimz . . .  stupid name.” Karash mumbled to himself like a petulant child.

Therex had seen decay in the body. In his medical training they often talked about post mortem investigations. But this was different. The flesh not only had decayed, it almost seemed to sag on the bones. Like it had been pulled and stretched over the skeletal frame, only a little too far. Running his fingers through several of the corpse's pouches, Therex was disappointed when his pickings came up scarce. A few spare rotted rations, half chewed credit chips, and two quarter full clips.

Sighing, he placed the clips on his own belt. In this situation, every shot helped. He next checked his satchel. Frowning at his dwindling supplies, he stood up and out of the puddle of various bodily fluids. Turning he glared at the short trooper who had followed him since they had started.

His name was Thomas. Therex only knew this because ever since they had entered the tunnels, the Private couldn't keep his mouth shut. Apparently he was a recent recruit, still green and very optimistic. His Squad Leader had suggested Therex as a partner because of Thomas' background in medicine. Hopefully being on a mission like this one would help shape him up a bit.

"Tom," Therex called him over. The greenie jumped when he heard his name and rushed over.

"Y-yeah?"

Therex grinned under his helmet. Most of these recruit grunts were anxious to fight, and were terrified of those of higher rank. He remembered his first few days in Wraith Squad, fresh out of training. Never before had he been grateful for a full helmet.

"I need some medical supplies, plus I want a scan done on some of these bodies please."

Thomas threw him a quick salute and scuttled off. Therex was kind of enjoying having a lackey. Tromping through the multitudes of bodies, Therex found Hammer.

"Hey," he said, knocking on the troopers helmet.

He whipped around, a little high strung for some reason. It was understandable though.

"Calm down," Therex said, chuckling. "I was just curious if everyone else was ready to head out."

Hammer tilted his head to the side slightly, almost questioning him.

"Myself and Thomas have been checking the bodies. We'll have a full scan report in like two minutes. We should keep moving on."

Hammer merely nodded and raised his blaster.

"Private," Therex said, turning back towards Thomas and the bodies.

The trooper was leaning over one body, brushing rats and bugs away from the faceplate, using a scanner to get readouts on the decay rate, toxicology, etc.

It was quiet.

I hate the quiet.

Therex shook his head and saw that Thomas had completed his scan. The greenie walked over and handed him a datapad with the results. Nothing seemed out of the ordinary. Just dead bodies in a bad environment. He shrugged at thomas and handed the datapad back.

"I guess we'll just keep going," Therex said, smirking. He was kind of hoping for something more substantial. Some mystery to explore. Something to break up this gorramn monotony. Sighing in defeat, he placed on hand on Thomas' shoulder and motioned back towards the group.

When Thomas was out of earshot, he flipped his comm onto a private channel and clicked it a couple times, waiting. Soon a familiar voice came on.

"Therex," Terre asked "What's up?"

"Something doesn't feel right..." he said, scanning the room one last time. "It's just a hunch."

"I feel that too. I can't quite place it though."

"Just stay safe, okay?" Therex said, the concern escaping his voice.

"You too."

Sighing, Therex turned the channel off and walked over to the group.

"Therex," Thomas said, almost tripping over the bodies as he ran. "We're leaving. We need to meet up with your squad leader. He believes we need to regroup."

Good, Therex thought, nodding in agreement. Maybe we'll find some trouble.
"He has his orders, and when a Chiss accepts orders he carries them out, period."

Terre heard the clicks over her comm and jumped slightly.

“Therex,” she replied, relieved. “What’s up?”

“Something doesn’t feel right…” he murmured. “Just a hunch.”

“I feel that too. I can’t quite place it, though.”

“Just stay safe, okay?” Terre smiled at the concern in his voice.

“You too,” she said, hoping he could hear the smile in her voice. She ended the transmission and turned to Vidia, who looked antsy. “Something’s off, huh?”

The other woman nodded. “I can’t… I don’t know how to explain it, but something feels…”

“Wrong,” Terre finished. “I know.”

“I don’t like it here. Let’s go meet up with the others, we didn’t find anything,” Vidia murmured, her blaster at waist height, jumping at every unexpected noise.

They headed back down the tunnel when Vidia whirled to her right, her HUD shining down a previously unnoticed branch of the tunnel.

“Terre…?” she asked, her voice shaking. “Something’s down there…”

“What do you mean?” Terre asked, sidling closer to her.

“I mean I saw something. I don’t know what, but I saw something move.”

Terre looked down the pass. She clicked the comm a couple times until Therex responded.

“Terre? Are you okay?”

“We’re… going to look down a side tunnel. Vidia saw something alive down there. I have to check it out.”

“Terre…” She heard Therex groan and curse softly. “Be careful… I don’t want to rescue you again…”

“I know, Rex…” She sighed. “I don’t like this… But I’ve got to do it…”

“I know you do… Stay safe.”

“I will. I’ll even leave the comm open so you can listen.”

“Good.”

Terre turned to Vidia. “Lead the way.”

It was a hard squeeze to get past the initial opening of the tunnel, and Terre had to move on tiptoe. Slick under her feet and scraping against the chest plate, she had to fight to get through. Vidia moved with relative ease, a more lithe figure than Terre herself. Terre was jealous for a moment, but sighed in resignation as the tunnel opened, leaving the bottleneck.

“KRIFF!” Vidia shrieked suddenly. Terre jumped, momentarily wedging herself back into the small tunnel, then extracting herself. Vidia cowered back, pointing. Terre looked closer. Rex was yelling in her ear.

“Terre? Terre! What was that? Are you okay? What’s wrong? Terre!”

“Rex, we found refugees.” Terre’s disgust was evident in her voice.

“Alive?”

“No. A group of them, though. Ten or less. Family or a cult, judging by their dress and similar talismans…” Terre studied the braided rope and metal necklaces before rifling through their pockets. “No weaponry. Cause of death, blaster bolt or other such laser.”

“That’s my girl.” Terre smiled at the pride in his voice. “Find anything else?”

“No, but the tunnel keeps going. We still haven’t found anything close to living. We’re going to keep going.”

She heard Therex’s long-suffering sigh. “Alright…”

Vidia had already turned the corner and Terre was close behind. “It bottlenecks again, Terre… Should we keep going?”

Terre nodded. “Yeah… I don’t like it, but what choice do we have?” Vidia nodded, then crept forward, easily slipping through to the other side. Terre was just coming out when she heard an all-too-familiar beeping. “GET DOWN!” she cried, tackling Vidia to the ground.

BOOM!!!

The mine exploded, closing the tunnel behind them, half-burying them in rubble. Terre choked, gasping for air. Something was compressing her chest, and she couldn’t feel her left leg. Vidia squirmed beneath her.

“Terre? What was that?” Therex’s voice rang tinny in her ear.

“Mine,” she rasped, trying to move. “Or a grenade…” She choked, causing a racking cough that made her back arch. She pushed herself up, pulling Vidia with her. Vidia seemed fine; Terre had caught most of the damage. Terre pushed Vidia in front of her, hurrying her forward. “The tunnel collapsed. We have to hope this leads out somewhere.”

“Terre…” Therex sounded pained. “I told you to be careful…”

“It’s not like I was hoping for a disaster,” Terre hissed. “We just missed something. My fault. I’m sorry.”

“Are you okay?” Vidia asked.

“I’ll be fine.” Terre winced, clutching her left side. “We need to get out. I won't worry until after that happens.”

"Hey, what's your name?" asked the Corporal to his right. He was a member of Zombie Platoon, a unit that he had never heard of before today and probably would forget in a weeks time. The soldier was anxious, curious and probably the older of the pair.

"Jamasis."

"My name's Jos'Var, but my friends just call me Jos. Do you have a family?"

"Nope." Jamasis couldn't care less about making idle chit-chat. Though the way the man stared at him eagerly forced him to cave in. "Do you have any family?"

"Yeah, they're amazing." The man was visibly relaxed by being able to take his mind off of the mission. "I've got a Dad, he's always complaining I don't do enough manual labour, I mean I'm a soldier for God's sake. And my Mum, she's an amazing cook. Also I've got a beautiful wife and daughter. Y'know I'm actually leaving the army so I can be with them?"

"No, I didn't."

"Yeah, gonna leave as soon as I can. I can't wait," Jos beamed under his helmet.

"You might not have realised, but the only way to get out of the army at the moment is to desert, and telling me about it wasn't the best idea."

"Oh no, I'm not deserting. I decided to quit just before this mission, so they're gonna let me go when we've captured the planet."

"What the hell's wrong with you?" asked Jamasis with mock anger.

"I'm sorry?"

"You're telling me this is your last job, then you're gonna go and be with your family? This means that at some point you're gonna get shot and make me promise to tell them you love them. Then I'm gonna have to go into some sort of righteous rage and kill thousands of enemy soldiers with no regard for my own safety. That's not how I want to spend the week."

"What?"

"You're one day away from retirement? One big last job?" The man slowly seemed to understand.

"Oh, I get it," he laughed for much longer than was necessary. This is going to be a long day. Something clattered behind them, in the distance. Jamasis stopped Jos immediately, cocked his head to listen.

"Skarr, we're going to drop back for abit. Five minutes," said Jamasis through his comm, and his Squad Leader nodded. Jos aimed his rifle through the tunnel, and they moved forwards together. Even with night vision visibility was limited, the constant damage to the structure had created a lot of dust and debris, in addition to numerous branching tunnels. Enemy soldiers could be waiting almost anywhere. If the surface of this planet was heaven for a strike team then this was hell. One incompetent trooper with a light machine gun could decimate a whole platoon with no skill and no escape.

"Go left, I'll go forwards," murmured Jamasis when they reached an offshoot. If there was anyone here at all, they couldn't be much further back. Ahead all he could see was a seemingly endless stretch of tunnel that lead back to the subway station. "We should go back Jos," he said through his comm.

A loud noise came from the other tunnel, followed by shouting. Jamasis ran back to the offshoot, in time to see two troopers, one Thrawnist and one of Zombie platoon, clawing at each other on the floor. He tried to aim his rifle, but couldn't fire for the risk of hitting the wrong man, and instead simply clubbed the troopers with the butt of the gun.

"Ow!" came the annoyed shout from Jos, as Jamasis continued to batter the Thrawnist.

"Oops, my mistake." He shot the stunned trooper three times in the chest, then pulled his partner back to his feet. "Pay attention in the tunnels! How hard is it? Get back to the others." Jamasis crouched down and relieved the dead soldier of his ammunition before being kicked in the back of the head. His eyes focused on the business end of an enemy rifle in time to see the man wielding it crumple to the floor.

"Pay attention in the tunnels!" mocked Jos from several metres away. Jamasis shook his head and activated his comm.

"Skarr, there are enemy troopers in these tunnels. It's better than that though," he said, glancing at the dead soldiers uniforms," apparently this is the route enemy special forces take."

HammerHead looked at the chared black flesh of a corpse, and wondered What happened here?

Therex, HammerHead, Duke, and Thomas had remained in this section of the tunnel for quite some time, as they were all very curious. Therex, and Thomas were examening the bodies from a medical standpoint, while HammerHead and Duke were trying their hardest to find out what had happened. However, no matter how hard they group looked, nothing made any sense.

Most of the men died from wounds inflicted by a blaster, but others died from more abnormal causes, such as decapitation and blood loss. This Thomas, however Therex was relativley un impressed. However, HammerHead was more focused on the setting of the massacre. As he scanned the walls, HammerHead had a realization.

"Therex, come here."

"What is it?" he said in a hushed tone.

"Do you see it?"

"What?"

"Look at the walls, they're covered in scorch marks."

"So? That probably happened during the fighting."

"Therex, these blast marks are coming from the positions that thier bodies now occupy. These men were shooting in all directions. But the thing is, it dosn't look like they hit anything."

"Son of a Bitch!" Therex said in shock.

"Well, I have news for you too, though it isn't as important. Judging by the amount of decay on these soldiers, they've been down here for a few weeks, at least."

"What the hell went on down here?"

"I don't know, buy what ever it was, it must have been brutal."

Suddely Therex lifted his comlink to his helmet, “Terre? Are you okay?” he asked  fearfully.

HammerHead then proceded to leave his comrade to his personal buisiness, and went to tell the others of the news. Thomas's responce was that of shock and Duke's was equally grim.

"We have to get out of here, and soon." Duke said with a touch of fear in his voice.

"I agree, I signal Skarr that we are moving on. Tell Thomas and Therex."

HammerHead gave Skarr the signal, to witch Skarr responded with a private comlink transmition. "What did you find out?" Hammer informed Skarr of the gruesome details as well as the obvious fear that clung to him and his fellow soldiers in the tunnel.

Duke gave Hammer a pat on the sholder, and HammerHead turned around to acompany his friend deeper into the tunnel system.

As time passed, the frearful quartet arrived at thier destination, only to find that it was blocked by a mound of rubble.

"It's sad Rex old boy, I know much you love using explosives in this kind of situation."

Therex used his comlink to talk to Skarr, and informed the group that they were to move ahead and regroup later on.

As time passed, the men started to relax. They farther the were from the bodies, the better they felt. The only one who was still edgy was HammerHead. He still felt like there was somthing wrong, like they were being watched...or even hunted. He then came to his senses and dismissed the idea of something hunting them. My past is finally coming back to haunt me, both in and outside of my dreams.

The former was completely true, as HammerHead had been suffering from horrible nightmares for weeks on end. Seens from his past, wether it was swarms of mutants or being hunted by  ferocious  beast, started to become a reality once more inside his mind. These horrific dreams were tormenting him, and his lack of sleep was starting to affect him heavly. In short, his lack of rest was making him extra jumpy.

While the group descended deeper into the tunnels, there came a change in scenery. There were no longer  small puddles here and there along the tunnel, as the entire bottom of the tunnel was filled with water. The water level came just over and inch high, so every step made caused a splash that echoed down the tunnel.

HammerHead was startled out of his thought process by a shrill sceam coming from far down the tunnel.

What have we gotten are selves into?

Fear is just an excuse for someone who is to lazy to take action.
Bravery is a fools excuse for running at something without taking time to think or strategize.
Courage is being able to man up and face a problem, no matter how large or difficult it may be, and take it down.

Wraiths: 5/30

Wraith and Virus moved throughout the tunnels with no encounters. The two groups seemed to get along with each other well enough, other than the two medics. Dusk had spoken with Dalen a few times, mostly if he had any tips on command, but also about the Sergeant himself. He had grown up on a back water planet and joined up with the Empire back in Palpatine’s area. He had only been a grunt but after their defeat, he’d joined the Vast Empire and was gladly accepted into their ranks. “So how’d you lose your eye?” Dusk asked the Virus SL.

“It was Thyvek, I’m sure you’ve heard of it, one of the worst battles I’ve ever been in.”

“I know, it was when I was first deployed. My squad, RAIDERS, left quite the dent in the city after the VE pulled out.”

“Sorry to hear it, a campaign like that is no place for a green, least you made it out unscathed.” He said giving Dusk a pat on the shoulder. “But I owe my eye to a NR commando, the bastard came at me with his wrist blade and got a couple of hits on me, but I took his arm and shoved the blade through his skull. I got some field medicine and an eye-patch and was put right back onto the front lines. Only after I got back to Tadath was I given real treatment and my cybernetics.”

“At least you got the guy. I can’t really get the person who took my arm, ‘cause it was just bad luck. But it turned out for the best in the end.” Dusk said deploying and examining his wrist blade. As he looked at the polished metal he was briefly blinded by a laser sight reflecting off of it. “Contact he shouted as he dove to the side, barely missing being shot.

Arcs of light shot across his vision as he got himself behind cover; he popped up for a moment to spot where the shots were coming from. He saw the armored figures briefly illuminated by their rifles as they pelted the two groups with blaster fire. He pulled his EE-3 up to his shoulder and squeezed off a few bolts before being forced back behind cover. “Wraith, Virus!” He called into his comms, “They’re on the platform overhead.”

Fire was exchanged between the two forces. The Thrawnists were at an obvious disadvantage number wise, but they had a well defendable location above them. So a direct approach was impossible. Looking around he saw a maintenance hatch on one of the walls nearby. “Cover me!” Dusk called as he sprinted for the door. Once inside the cramped space, he felt the metal slightly heat from the missed blaster fire. He climbed the ladder to the second hatch and pried it open just enough to poke his blaster out. He brought the soldier on the E-web into his sights and put three shots into the man’s chest, dropping him. “Heavy support is down, increase your fire, and let’s finish this.” New found confidence pulsed through the new SL.

“Skarr, there are enemy troopers in these tunnels. It's better than that though,” Jamasis’ voice boomed through the ComLink “apparently this is the route enemy special forces take.”

“Roger that. Do your best to hide whatever evidence that shows we’re in here. Then return to this tunnel and catch up to us.” Skarr ordered, apparently not willing to split the group any more. “We’ll let you know if we take any deviations.”

“Understood. Jamasis out.” The sergeant ended the short conversation and the comm went dead.

Skarr motioned the squad forward, but soon enough HammerHead’s voice also came through the comlink.

“We’re going to move forward and meet you the next intersection.”

“Roger that…” Skarr replied, but instead of moving on, he stood there, apparently still talking on the comm. It took a good while for him to finish whoever he was talking with, but after he finished he just motioned the squad forward. Mox wondered what happened, and what was on Skarr’s mind, but he knew that there was nothing that SCOPEs can’t handle.

The uneventful walk was interrupted when Jamasis and Jos returned to the group. The Zombie quickly shared what happened, but Jamasis simply waited for the group to continue to move. It seemed he did not find the situation as exhilarating like the other trooper did. Skarr ordered the group to move forward and the Vast Imperialists, with Jos still yapping about the brawl with the Thrawnist, moved forward.

Mox was constantly worried about the tunnels collapsing. That and being attacked by the enemy special forces seemed the only danger that could stop Ghosts and Zombies from achieving their objective. Of course there were many other factors, but these two seemed most likely. The young slicer was certain that any opposition they would face, they would survive it, but if the tunnels collapsed they would be stopped immediately. Being buried once already, he did not enjoy the idea of being caved-in forever, possibly with crushed arm or legs. For it was on another icy planet that he lost his arm, forcing him to replace it with a cybernetic, and even though it gave him many benefits, Mox would rather keep his biological limbs. Let’s just get his over with and leave…

But it seemed that even thinking of trouble invited it. Suddenly Skarr raised his hand and the whole grouped dropped. Jos’s voice in the ComLink finally stopped and they were all silent, awaiting further orders. After a short moment Mox started seeing what Skarr had seen in his night vision: humanoid silhouettes.

“Thrawnists?” he asked into the ComLink, making sure that the speakers in his helmet were off.

“Possibly.” Skarr replied “HammerHead, Terre, is any in my group’s tunnel?”

“No…” Therex’s voice came through “But we’re going to move now.”

“…no, at least we don’t think so…” Terre’s voice panted through the ComLink. It seemed as if she was struggling.

“Terre, are you two ok?” Skarr asked, worry in his voice.

“Yes, we’re fine... Had a little run-in with a mine… but we’re fine.” the female voice commed over “The tunnel behind us collapsed, but we’ll regroup with you.”

“Well… Report such happening to me from now on.” Skarr’s worried voice became more firm now, sounding like an order.

“Of… course. Terre out.” The ComLink connection closed.

“So… they are definitively not one of ours. Prepare yourself, they’re coming nearer.”

The group crawled over to a side of the tunnel, but they knew it would be impossible to hide in the long run. So at the moment that Skarr seemed fit for their shots to hit, he ordered the Vast Imperialists to fire. But it seemed that the enemy already spotted them, for the moment the group moved their guns to give fire, the Thrawnists dodged to their sides, taking cover for whatever they could find. Ghosts and Zombies pushed themselves off the ground and did the same, and soon the failed surprise attacked turned into a blaster skirmish. Shots were given off from both sides, but none hit their targets.

Mox looked into his anti-armor pouch, and found that he only had a few cartridges left. Being as unique as his weapon was, used by the Imperial Commandoes themselves, he doubted that he would find more ammo for it. He decided against the idea off wasting them on the enemy troopers and instead continued to attempt to hit them with the blaster bolts. The near cakewalk they experienced on the ground has turned into hell beneath the surface. The night vision was blinded each time a blaster shot was given off and so Mox had very limited visibility, but he couldn’t turn it off either: he would then not be able to see anything at all.

But clearly, if the skill of the skirmishers was similar, numbers would begin to play a larger role. It seemed that the enemy had fewer members than Skarr’s group, and soon enough the Vast Imperialists were managing to land hits on the enemies. And when they did, the balance of the battle became more and more shattered and the slowly it became obvious that the Thrawnists were losing.

Come on… we can finish them off. Mox thought as he aimed at the enemy. At the same time, one of the enemy troopers gave an aimed shot at Mox.

Jamasis placed shot after shot down the tunnel, aiming in the few brief moments that blaster bolts didn’t impede his vision.

“Looks like we’re winning,” said Jos lightly.

“Don’t you ever shut up?”

“Woah, sorry.”

He aimed his rifle ahead and Jamasis thought he clipped one of the Thrawnists, but they didn’t go down. A shout came from his side and he turned irritably.

“What now Jos?”

“Wasn’t me.”

“You sure you weren’t too busy talking to notice?” The words were a little too spiteful all things considered, but they would all probably be dead by the end of this campaign anyway. That didn’t mean an awful lot of Thrawnists wouldn’t die at his hands though. Jamasis fired quickly at the outlines of the enemy, missed, and swore out loud.

The pain seared through his arm and it had gone dead on impact. He tried to hoist his rifle up to his shoulder but it was too heavy. One of the enemy special forces had clipped his right shoulder and it stung worse than anything he could remember. Actually it stings just as much as the last time I got shot. Funny that. Jos moved towards him and started to loosen the armour around his arm.

“What are you doing now?”

“I’ve trained as a medic, this is nothing.” Jamasis grimaced as he touched and probed. Jos shook his head. “Don’t be such a wimp, there’s barely any damage. It’s looser now and everything will be fine in a few minutes. You might want to take some painkillers though.” He took two pills out from his belt and Jamasis swallowed them.

“Thanks.”

“Don’t mention it, some of us have shooting to do.” Jamasis smiled inside his helmet. He propped himself up and tried to aim but the majority of Thrawnists had been killed and the last few were retreating. The rest of his own squad seemed intact, though Mox looked to be in pain and some of the others including Skarr had gathered around him.

“I think we have a few minutes. You’re a medic, huh?”

“Yes.”

“Are you a good one or what?” Some part of him was amused by the sudden role reversal, that he was now the one asking annoying questions.

“I’m fairly good. Why?”

“Do you do mental problems?”

“Yes, you have one. No I do not know what it is. And yes, you probably are going to go on a murderous rampage at some point.”

“The proper doctors were a little bit kinder but that does seem to be the general opinion of me. Can you suggest any way for me to avoid killing everyone?”

Skarr walked over to the pair of them, “Both of you okay?” he asked motioning to Jamasis in particular. Jamasis gave him a thumbs up and clambered back to his feet. “Everyone is still standing, so we keep going. We need to regroup and take down the generators ASAP.”

Terre left the comm on, listening to the confusion going on with the other group. Apparently, Jamasis had been hurt, too. Now that the adrenaline rush was fading, she could feel a sharp pain in her left side, but was doing her best to ignore it. Suddenly, the pain overwhelmed her, and she slumped against the wall for a moment.

“Vidia, you need to go ahead and tell me what we’re dealing with. Come back and report to me and we’ll figure something out.” The young girl nodded, slithering forward into the darkness. Terre opened a private line with Therex again. “Therex?” she whimpered.

“Yeah?” he responded immediately. “Terre, are you okay?”

“No… Therex, I’m scared… That mine got me better than I originally thought… You have to meet us at this tunnel’s end… I sent Vidia ahead…” Terre’s voice was getting breathy and faint.

“Terre, keep talking to me. What’s wrong?”

“It hurts… My left side… Especially… And across my back…” The pauses between fragments were getting longer and longer. Therex began to panic.

“Terre, stay with me, okay?” he tried to keep her talking. Vidia came back and he heard her conversing with Terre.

“The end of the tunnel isn’t much more than fifteen meters from here,” she said. Terre grunted, hauling herself to her feet. “Skarr, William, Jamasis, Jos, and some of the others are up ahead. I didn’t see Hammer, Duke, Thomas or Therex, though...”

“Therex, where are you?” Terre gasped into the comm as she stumbled forward.

“Behind Skarr’s group. I think. Listen, Terre, I’ll be there as soon as I can, okay?” Terre nodded before she realized he couldn’t see her.

“Yeah. See you soon...” She stumbled forward and nearly fell, but Vidia caught her, slinging her arm over her shoulder.

“I look out for my comrades,” Vidia chuckled, helping her out of the tunnel. They ran into the middle of Skarr’s group, and Terre tried to stand up straight, but wound up listing to one side, supporting herself on Vidia. Skarr noticed them first and was just turning to talk to them when Terre heard a familiar voice.

"Terre!" She turned her head sharply, trying to identify who was speaking.

"Therex!" He was barreling towards her and she braced herself, grimacing. He stopped just in front of her, obviously restraining himself from clasping her to himself. She tried to move towards him, but stumbled. He caught her easily, every gesture conveying concern, then he picked her up and carried her a little ways away from everyone else. He yanked his helmet and gloves off, then helped her take her own armor off, finally revealing the extent of the damage.

"Holy... Terre, how were you walking?!"

She made a strangled noise, somewhere between a laugh and a sob. "That bad, huh?"

Therex gently lifted the left side of her shirt, grimacing. "Terre... You must have smashed every rib on this side..."

"Can you fix it?"

"I can try..." Therex dug through what supplies he had. They were scant, and he needed some way to anesthetize her, or at least, help take her mind off the pain. Fumbling through his pouches, his hand struck a small, half crumpled box, still wrapped in cellophane. Therex pulled out the cigarette box and tapped it,  praying. It had been a long past couple weeks, and he had gone through most of them. When a small paper cylinder bumped his palm, he sighed heavily.

Taking the wrapped paper into his mouth, Therex lit it and inhaled heavily, allowing the tip to glow red. He then removed it and sighed, smoke trailing from his lips.

"Here," he said, holding it in front of Terre's lips. "Suck on this while I prepare your bandages and a splint for your leg."

Terre reached out with her lips, grasping the end and began puffing it slowly, her body quivering less with every breath. Therex turned back to his pouch of medical supplies. There was nothing for a splint or a bandage here, but he whipped up a quick concoction for the bleeding and to help clean any open wounds of infection. After injecting Terre with his drugs, Therex sat back and tried to use his imagination. Thomas eventually approached and asked if he could assist. Therex sent him to find a splint, while Therex focused on the bandages.

An idea struck him. He used his knife to cut away Terre's shirt on the side with the wound, but saved the cloth. Next, he exposed her thigh the same way, again salvaging anything useful for later. He then looked around and saw one of the dead corpses. Crawling over, Therex silently apologized and undid the man's boot. He then unthreaded the lace and scooted back over to Terre.

"You ready?" he asked, placing one hand one her ribs.

Terre merely nodded, her cigarette already half burnt out. Returning the nod, Therex began tearing the cloth he had found into strips and laying them across Terre's midsection. He tried to keep her lying flat, but every so often, he would hit a tender spot and she would jolt. Sighing,  Therex applied the last of his makeshift bandage and started to tie it down with the bootlace.

"There, " he said, almost chuckling. "It's not pretty, but I guess you can make up for that."

Terre chuckled softly, her breathing still shallow. “That’s funny,” she murmured. Therex bent close to her, and her eyes fluttered shut.

“Would these work?” Thomas asked, a little too loudly for him not to know what was going on. Therex grumbled softly, then took the materials from him. Terre chuckled again, gently cupping his cheek.

“Are you going to finish fixing me?” she asked, smiling at him.

Therex had patched up Terre pretty resourcefully, and he was now leaning over her, their lips barely centimeters apart.

“Would these work?”

Therex hung his head and swore silently to himself. He had wondered where Thomas had gone. Standing, he turned towards his temporary assistant. Drawing himself to full height, he towered over Thomas and tried to act menacing.

“Yes,” Therex growled lowly, “Now go somewhere else. I’ll deal with you later.”

As Thomas walked away, still in bewilderment about what had happened, Therex knelt down by Terre again. Thomas went to check on some of the others who had been injured. Still incensed with his assistant’s interruption, Therex felt Terre’s hand on his face, lifting his chin.

“Are you going to finish fixing me?” she asked, her smile calming Therex slightly. Placing two pieces of some stiff material that Thomas had brought him underneath Terre’s leg, and gently brushed her knee.

“This might hurt a bit,” he said, grimacing slightly.

Terre sighed and relaxed, preparing for him. Therex grabbed her ankle, and pulled gently. When she bucked, he stopped and tried to flash her a grin.

“Sorry.”

Returning to his work, Therex pulled lightly, trying to reposition her leg. Weighing his options, he shrugged, and jerked hard. He heard a light crack, and Terre grunted rather loud.

It’s better than going slow.

“You okay,” he asked, bandaging the leg and moving the splint back.

Gritting through her teeth, Terre nodded, her breathing coming in gasps.

“I wish I could give you something for the pain”

Therex checked his pouch and pulled out a hypo. Handing it to her, he wrapped her fingers around it.

“If the pain gets too bad, use this. But not until then. I can’t guarantee there won’t be side effects.”

She smiled and held the syringe close as Therex helped her tentatively to her feet. When she wobbled slightly, Therex helped keep her upright. She leaned against his shoulder, her eyes closing to slits. Picking up pieces of her armor, he replaced the ones he could, skipping over her leg. Walking her over to her comrade, Therex stopped before they rejoined the group and placed his hands on her shoulders. Terre looked up at him, and he opened his mouth to speak, but she stopped him with a kiss. He was surprised for a moment, then held her closer to himself, exhaling in a sigh when she pulled away.

“That was to make up for Thomas interrupting the first time,” she whispered, her eyelids halfway shut.

Therex opened his mouth to reply, but Skarr cut him off.

“Therex, come here.”

Sighing, Therex handed Terre her helmet.

“Be safe,” he whispered before walking away and finding Skarr. He was standing with Hammer, and Mox around an upturned crate with a map. They were all filling him in, and Skarr was working on their next move. When he walked up, all three nodded at him.

“Fill me in Rex, how is the crew?”

“Well,” Therex said, removing his gauntlets. “I just patched up Terre, and I think she was the worst case. Everyone else just has minor scratches, burns, or breaks.”

“Any recommendations to add to our little brain pool here?” Skarr asked, motioning for him to sit at their makeshift table.

“I think we could use some rest. I could go around patching up the small injuries as needed. Maybe ten minutes or so. If that’s okay, I can go assign the priorities of our wounded.”

Skarr scratched his stubbled chin, and nodded.
“I agree. Go ahead. Keep your eyes open though.”

Replacing his gauntlet, Therex stood, and threw Skarr a quick salute before turning back to the squad...

And ran right into Terre.

“I heard you talking,” she murmured, looking up at him with a smirk on her face. “Thomas is flirting with Vidia, I thought I’d take a turn with you. Let me help.” Therex began to protest, but she stopped him, putting a finger over his mouth.

“Please?”

He sighed, then nodded slowly. “Just follow me, okay?”

“I’m not a newbie, Therex. I know how to work with you,” Terre said, raising an eyebrow at him. He sighed, laughing a little. “Besides, many hands make light work... And we might even have a little free time after.” She took his arm, leading him to the nearest wounded squadmate.

Therex knelt down and started examining the soldier, tearing bandages from whatever cloth he could find. It wasn’t very clean work, but it would hold them long enough to get out. Sighing, he knew he was going to see most of these men a second time, either under a white sheet, or on the operating table with an infection.

While he was focusing most of his attention on this new patient, he noticed Terre limping off to another soldier. She took his helmet off, and Therex recognized Jamasis. Terre looked around nervously, as though someone would catch her doing something, then whispered a few words in Jamasis’ ear, which he responded to by shaking his head vehemently. Terre seemed firm, and finally, Jamasis heaved a sigh, and nodded. Terre glanced around again, then slipped something into his hand. She hunched forward, and Therex couldn’t see for a moment. Then she stood and hobbled back to Therex.

“What was that?” he asked.

“Nothing,” Terre said, shifting her weight off of her right leg, not making eye contact with him.

“You’re lying to me. Why?”

“It’s nothing, Therex,” she said firmly, a warning in her voice.

“Terre, just tell me. What. Did. You. Do?”

She shifted again, then sighed. “I... I gave him my stim...”

Therex stared at her blankly for a moment. “What?”

“He needed it more than I did... I have a pack of cigs in my knapsack. I’ll be okay. He needed... /Something/...”

“I gave that to you for a reason. Mere cigarettes aren’t gonna do bullshit if you go into shock.” Terre looked down at the floor, stunned at his reaction. Therex sat back and covered his face with one hand. “I’m sorry. Sometimes I forget that a medic can’t let personal feelings get in the way. All that oath shit they made me do in the classes would have had me do the same.”

He brushed Terre’s cheek lightly, “I’m sorry.” Before Terre could reply, Therex shot up and looked around.

Steps. Footsteps. Not booted, like a Stormie, but light. Switching through several filters on his eye, Therex found the source. A small group of about six men were patrolling the tunnel ahead of them. Swearing, Therex ran over to Skarr.

“We have a problem.”

Just when the dust seemed to be settled, a new wave of blasts shook the place up. The death of their comrades either had not enough ill effect on the Thrawnists, or just the right amount. They’re angry. Let’s give them something to be angry about. Urakai  threw his helmet in the air and leapt out from his cover, firing five shots before the sights were on him again. Sailing back behind the ever thinning cover, he kicked a brick in frustration. He landed no hits, not even a glancing burn. He excused his laying low majority of the mission as getting back in the swing of things. It had been two years after all, and he always scoped out his new squads from afar. But what If he had lost his touch? Killing may have got easier, but perhaps some deep seated burning in Urakai longed for something different. Maybe I’m not ready, maybe I’ve been out of the game too long. Three headshots, all by Ura directly into one advancing Thrawnist’s skull laid that all to rest. He chuckled to himself, and rejected the thought with a Nope.

The enemy mounting the heavy blaster cursed loudly, which lead to Urakai taking a significant amount of fire. The rubble he covered behind was dwindling, and he could feel the scorch of the blasts growing hotter. Before Ura contemplated making a run for it, Dusk had leapt up and obliterated the gunner with a single shot, inspiring the remaining squad to break cover and assist. In a matter of seconds the surroundings were cleared and the remaining Thrawnists fled without pride or a weapon. Urakai picked himself up and joined the squad, passing the partially headless trooper and smirking.

When he wondered if he should be worried that he just felt gratified by a mutilated corpse, Dusk called out, “You wanna put a bandage on that, buddy?”

Ura looked down at his armour, he saw nothing. He then turned his head and brushed his back. His hand returned stained with blood.

Bemused, he jokingly concealed his fear, “Heat of the moment hehe.”

“I thought your armour was gonna melt off.” Dusk replied, unconvinced.

“Job for a bacta patch.”

A trooper from the Virus squad ran over with one but Urakai shooed him away, grabbing one from his own medkit and applying it. He didn’t know whether to be worried he couldn’t feel the scorching or grateful. He brushed the thought off and rallied with the rest.

Dusk took the lead and turned to the squad, “Alright boys, we’re behind, we’re down, and we’re alone until we get this objective completed.”

“Look sir, you can see their tracks in the ash.” A squadmate reported, following the trails of a fleeing Thrawnist.

“What’s the bet he’s heading where we need to go.” Urakai said to anyone.

“They’re odds I’ll take. Let’s move.” Dusk replied.

The squads mobilised, following the tracks through the rubble.

“I’ll take point.” Urakai said, filled with a new sense of competence.

GHOST 13/30

“Everyone back away, and spread out. Break out into your pairs and stay quiet, but try to make as much progress towards the target as possible.” Skarr ordered the moment Therex finished talking. “We can’t risk another firefight here; this whole place is about to fall on our heads...”

The two squads immediately separated into 7 pairs, and these backed away, each going into a different tunnel as it found one. Mox, his shoulder still hurting deeply from the shot, followed Gavin away from the patrol. Suddenly the foreign footsteps loudened: the patrol gave chase. Try to find us, idiots... Mox thought as he reached for Gavin, and threw him towards a smaller tunnel, more of a deep hole in the wall.

“What are you doing?” the man asked through the comm as he regained balance

“We gotta hide. We can’t just run away, these guys are sure to notice us.” Mox said as he crept into the hole. “This looks small enough not to collapse, but large enough for them not to notice us.”

The Zombie stood there for a second, apparently baffled by Mox’s idea. “Have I not taught you… anything?”

“Get in here, or run. But do it now, or they’ll see you.” Mox ignored his former mentor’s question, and pushed himself further into the hole. “Come on…”

“Fine, but we’ll regret this…” he said as put away his gun, while going into the hole, and readied his pistol.

The two Vast Imperialists waited for a while, before three pairs of white boots flashed across the corridor. The visibility wasn’t great, and so Mox couldn’t tell whether it was an enemy or friendly. They waited there for a few minutes, until the footsteps became nothing but mere echo, and then they left their hiding place, their carbines up to their eyes, ready to shoot.

“Right’s clear.” Mox said as strained his eyes to detect even faintest differences in the color, on his visor.

“Same as left…” Gavin replied, disbelief in his voice “It worked… Since when did Thrawn allow such idiots to be his scouts…”

“Come on, Gav. We gotta move ahead, remember what Skarr said.”

“Of course. Let’s move.”

The two troopers slowly moved forward, their carbines up to their faces. Mox connected his DataPad to his helmet, to show the VE’s map of the tunnels. Unfortunately, the map was fairly inaccurate, to the degree that almost 80% of the tunnels were either closed off – and they couldn’t risk the noise of breaking through them – or caved-in. Some were only partially caved in, and Mox wanted to try go through them, but Gav insisted on not risking an airstrike squashing them. “And you saw what happened to that girl from your squad. There could be more mines in there. Also, these ‘tunnels’ could become a dead end…”.

As the two men moved through the tunnels they started meeting up with other pairs, but each time they split at the next opportunity, following Skarr’s order. But soon enough the pair has ran into a couple of Vast Imperilist, taking cover behind various objects, constantly glancing over the edge. Mox quickly used his DataPad to identify the group, and it turned out to be Skarr’s, Hark’s and Therex’s pairs.

“What’s going on?” Gavin asked as he crouched next to one of the Zombies.

“There’s a Thrawnist checkpoint up ahead, and all the other entrances are either blocked off, more heavily guarded or just caved-in.” the man responded

“We’ll have to eliminate them silently…” Mox said as he peeked out at the enemy troopers. It was a noticeable group and Mox could see light more deeper on. “And it seems that they have power over there.”

“Yeah, we’re getting close…” Skarr said, leaning on a wall. “We’ll wait for everyone else, and then we’ll take them out.”

“But you said yourself that you don’t want to risk fire-“ Mox said, but was cut by his SL

“I know what I said, but we have to somehow to get through” the 1st Lieutenant looked over the cover into the enemy checkpoint. “And besides, it looks like this area wasn’t bombarded much; I don’t see a lot of cave-ins. It must be commonly used by the Thrawnist, as well as much sturdier.”

“So we wait?” Therex asked

“Yes.” The SL nodded “Hopefully they all managed to escape or evade that patrol and they’ll be here.”

Mox looked around. Having to crouch so that the enemy would not see them, the situation looked preety dire. The cover was plenty, but he bet that it was easily destroyable. They would have to most likely charge in and use an element of surprise to get into melee range and hopefully overpower the enemy.

=============================================

“So, Strike Leader, what are we going to do?” corporal asked once the two squads reassembled, making sure his DC-17M was reloaded.

We're preparing to enter the part of the tunnels where our maps end, but first we must get rid of the Thrawnist checkpoint.

Ghost 14/30

Vidia pulled Terre towards another side-tunnel, stepping in first herself, then helping Terre towards the back, checking for mines and other traps or snares. Terre settled in, trying to use the shadows to hide her white armor.

“You know, whoever made this wasn’t thinking of stealth,” she hissed to Vidia, shifting so her leg was in a comfortable position. Vidia chuckled softly, then shushed her. Terre listened for a moment and heard the clicking of boots as the trio passed by. Neither breathed, and the troopers were running by too quickly to hear them anyway. Terre and Vidia both crawled out a few moments later, after everything had fallen silent.

“What the hell?” Vidia murmured, peering around the corner. “They didn’t even stop.”

“Yeah, someone’s in a hurry,” Terre replied, her brow furrowing. “Since when does Thrawn have such imbeciles for troops?”

“You mean you’ve run into him before?”

“You could say that.” Terre felt another presence behind her. “You want to fill her in?” she asked Therex over her shoulder, limping a ways off and sitting down against the wall. She sighed heavily, pulling her smokes out of her bag and lighting one up.

“What’s she on about?” Vidia asked, her head cocked.

Therex sighed heavily. “She originally came from Obroa-skai. Her family was murdered there by Thrawn and his army while they were traveling to Wayland.”

Vidia gasped. “That’s awful!”

Therex nodded. “And she doesn’t talk about it often. Not with me, not with Skarr, not with anyone. It’s very painful for her. And he doesn’t stop. I doubt he remembers her. But he keeps coming back into her life.”

Vidia winced and looked towards Terre. “I feel so sorry for her… At least I still have a family…”

Therex nodded. “So just… If she panics, or if she has a breakdown… Let me know. And try to keep her calm.” Vidia nodded, and Therex walked over to Terre. Her face was covered by one hand, and her still-burning smoke was in the other. Therex squatted next to her and took her hand in his, pulling it away from her face. Tear tracks streaked her cheeks, and he sighed.

“It’s not something I can really get over, you know?” she whispered. “I can fight as many battles as I want against his armies, but they still outnumber me, and I won’t be any closer to him…”

“Yeah, I know.” Therex sighed. Terre wiped her eyes, then took a pull on her smoke, passing it to him before exhaling. He took it in his lips, taking a long pull before crushing it out. Terre sighed as he stood, closing her eyes. Therex smiled at her, then took her hands in his, helping her to her feet. She leaned against him for a moment, and he held her tight before releasing her. “I’ll be fighting with you, though. You aren’t in this alone.”

“Thank you…” Terre smiled at him, and he kissed her forehead before disappearing again, presumably to find Thomas. Vidia stood next to her, then put one hand on her shoulder.

“Come on,” she said. “Let’s go follow them.”

Terre nodded, letting Vidia lead her down the hallway, quick and quiet. They rounded the corner and saw Skarr and the rest of the group. Terre snapped off a salute, which was returned.

“Terre, report,” Skarr ordered.

“Sir, we saw three Thrawnist scouts heading down this way about ten minutes ago,” Terre stated, still standing at attention. “Have you seen them?”

“Yes, we have. Good work, Terre.” Skarr stepped back to allow her a space in the group. She stepped forward, shifting her weight to her right leg. Therex smiled at her from across the circle, and she smiled back, then turned her attentions back to Skarr.

“We need ideas. Come on, guys, how are we going to take them silently?” he was saying, his face concerned.

“No firefights, huh?” Hammer asked, looking a little disappointed. Terre sighed when Skarr shook his head.

“Could we over power them?” she asked. Skarr looked at her, cocking his head. “I don’t see how they could be hiding a massive arsenal there… If we all work together, we ought to be able to take them.”

“And then what?” Mox asked. “What do we do with them then?”

Terre thought for a moment before answering. “I’ll stay behind with them. We can hold them hostage. My leg won’t hold out too much longer, and I’ll just be slowing you down.” She saw Therex glare at her and she stared back, holding his gaze until he broke eye contact, looking away and blinking a few times. Terre grimaced, before turning to Skarr, who was pondering her idea.

“Okay, Terre. I’ll buy, but I want someone else with you, including Vidia. It seems like every time you’re alone, something happens.”

Terre snorted a laugh. “That’s because something does happen.”

Skarr scanned his group, sizing each of them up. “Jos, Jamasis, you two stay with Terre and Vidia after we take this checkpoint.” Both nodded, and he addressed the group again. “Okay, let’s go. Remember, no shots fired, we only want to take them hostage. Move out.”

Wraith 7/30

Dark and damp with noticeable cracked and crusting walls, it was all too narrow for his comfort, Drex chuckled reminiscing of time spent in more comfortable holes in the ground. He held his breath for a moment and wondered why he found this amusing as he had done many times in the past, making him a sceptic of his own thoughts. Grimacing slightly as he stepped into a gritty paste like substance he crouched to examine his boot please don’t be a ground up trooper, that’s not a good signhe thought as he brought two coated fingers up to eye level. Drexhel sighed with relief, it appeared to be common water thickened by collecting dust, he stepped forward and continued briskly down the tunnel system, he had banked on catching his new squad before they’d gotten this far, he was once again paying the price for selectively hearing his briefing. He had captured the major details but had entirely neglected to pay attention to things like com channels, names or the loud complaints about him not listening.

*SMACK* Drex struck his wrist com in frustration after tampering irresponsibly during the last few minutes of absent wandering, he stopped with sudden attention to his surroundings, still dark but a faint shuffling could be heard up ahead. He drew his side arm and began to trot, hunched over and light footed after a few seconds he could see the lone silhouette of a man standing in the wake of a very recent fire fight, he broke into a shoulder forward sprint, tackling the figure as he turned to meet Drex. Both men fell, as Drexhel landed he rolled, redirecting his aim on bended knee to his suspected enemy, he could see the armour was not friendly as he dropped the butt of his pistol, hard, onto his grounded opponents face. Standing up the Lance Corporal aimed a disarming kick and dragged the thrawnist to his feet, with the sharp ridge of his forearm he held the man by the throat, gun barrel pressed against his head.

“Hello” Drex said with gleeful elevation in his voice “you’re a scout right? Following some troopers?” he grinned with a make my day kind of expression.

He could feel his captive gulp under the pressure of his arm as a managed to rasp a few words “Wha? No? Please?” Drexhels eyes shone with rage barely visible at a distance but he had drawn his head eye to eye with the man.

“You’re lying” he half sung in a shrill pitch “If you point me in the right direction” he paused for effect “I might not kill you”.

He pointed to a pathway of scattered rubble and scorch marks and gulped “They can’t be to far ahead, so you let me go?”.

Drex stifled a laugh as he pressed his gun to his skull “Um, no? Are you stupid?” he pulled the trigger replacing face with a large burning hole.

He looked at the scene ahead and muttered to himself “Kinda obvious now that I think about it, that hardly seemed necessary” he looked down at the corpse, knelt down and began rummaging, finding some credit chits, a spare clip and a seemingly active small datapad.

Drex walked carefully over the former battle zone, there had been very heavy fire, an almost decimated pile of rubble struck his notice as it has a small amount of burnt blood on it Someone’s hurt? That’s my job! this thought like many others struck him as odd as he broke into a full run in attempt to catch his future squad. He passed an E-WEB to meet two mangled sets of tracks perusing the runners? this one spurred him further he was not going to miss out on anymore fighting. He came to a small patch where the tracks seemed fresher, where the squad may have stood for a weapons check and a tactical talk, he knelt to confirm this and Drex was by no means a tracker. No sooner had he touched the ground was he barked upon with commands.

He cursed under his breath as he listened “Rank and name! Now!” there was no hesitance in this voice.

Drex decided he’d best not screw with them just yet “Lance Corporal Drex Helban, late assign to Wraith. Permission to not be shot at?”.  He was more nervous with being at gunpoint than anything else.

The speaker moved forward still with gun at the ready “can you prove it?”.

Drexhel fumbled around his pack looking for his datapad containing his brief on finding it he handed it over.

The man looked over it cautiously “It checks out but I don’t remember being notified of this” he lowered his weapon as did the two approaching troopers behind him “Sargent Dusk, squad leader of wraith” he spoke with an uplifted tone of pride.

“My assignment was very last minute, I’ve been trying to catch up for long enough, you guys move quick” Drex felt the tension leave but felt they may still be sceptical.

“fall in trooper we’re on the move, try to be a little more quiet, we heard you coming from miles off” Dusk had turned on heel to get back to the squad, one of his supports stood glancing him up and down with a measuring look about her, the other threw a quick nonchalant wave before he spoke.

“Sargent First Class Urakai, hope you pull your weight here” there was an almost joking side hint to his tone but with the sincere enough hope to be expected when stating something along those lines.

Urakai and the unidentified woman had now rushed off to now viewable larger pack, Drex didn’t take time to count as he joined, switching to his rifle and lightening his step, they moved at pace and with intensity, again if Drexhel had done more that skim the brief he’d know why. Urakai took the forward position, closely with the squad leader, the tracks they followed had a harder pat on the ash than when they began, deeper and more pronounced until a spilt in the pathway occurred.

Ura spoke to Dusk but audibly heard by all “More prints to the left, but I wonder why they broke apart?”

Dusk thought for a second “They could be leading us astray? They must know we’re following, but they could also be protecting something”.

Drex remembered the little datapad he’d taken from the scout on the way here “Maybe this has something on it?” he shook the thing eagerly.

Dusk extended his hand and retrieved it, with focus he looked it over. Drexhel stepped back to analyse the situation, he hadn’t yet decided where to place his own brand of fun.

Wraiths: 8/30

Dusk read over the data-pad that he was recently given by the new member of Wraith. It was mostly details on the VE’s movements and personal logs, but one interesting message surfaced. The sergeant smirked as he read it. “Dalen, Jack; it appears that we have come into possession of a map of the tunnels and the location of an enemy outpost.”

The two looked over the new data, “Well now we know where those goram soldiers split off to.” Jack chuckled at the impending firefight.

“Wraith, Virus; let’s move out!” The Virus SL called to the group.

With the three commanders on point, the rest of the troopers filled in behind them. Dusk looked at the grimy walls with a touch of frost on the edges. He hadn’t really looked at how dank and depressing the place really was. They followed the path that the fleeing Thrawnist had taken, or their best guess of their path. They entered into a larger tunnel that had signs of frequent travel. The group split off to the two sides of the tunnel, they slowly moved up through the passageway. Seeing carbon scoring on rubble ahead. As he pressed his biological hand to the burnt stone, it was warm to the touch. “There was fighting here, not too long ago. It’s probably Ghost and Voodoo, let’s hurry and see if we can catch up with them.

With a quickened pace, the two squads made decent time. When friendly signatures appeared ahead Dusk switched to an inter-squad channel. “Ghost, is that you?”

A few of the soldiers ahead turned their blasters toward them. A familiar voice called to them, “Who’s this?”

“Skarr, it’s Wraith and Virus. We thought you could use a hand with that base.”

“We were just going to overwhelm the outpost and take them hostage. No help necessary.”

“There is a lot more to the outpost than you’re seeing, we have intel about their numbers. Together, we have a chance to take ‘em on.”

“Alright, let’s join up and hit the bastards hard.”

The two groups amassed into a platoon sized force. After sharing the intel with everyone present, they took positions. Dusk and the rest of Wraith took the far right of the tunnel, while the three other squads took their respective quarters. Lining up his EE-3 with one of the soldiers guarding the entrance, he turned on his comms.

“Open fire in three…

Two…

One…”

“What do you mean we can’t contact the squads down there?” High Colonel Arde Sorak shouted. In the Vast Empire’s Forward Operating Base a number of junior officers turned to look at the ranking member of staff.
“They’re deep into the subway system, that’s far too much duracrete to send a signal though,” Garryll Gates replied. The movement of individual platoons was normally well beneath and officer of his level, but the individual situation concerned him greatly.
“Well, send a scout down into the tunnels and pull your special forces out of there, now!”

The firefight was already dying down. The combined forces had overrun the Thrawnist checkpoint after a few exchanges of fire and the use of a few grenades. Now the narrow tunnels were full of a thick, opaque smoke. The forces defending the checkpoint clearly had some control over the functioning subway systems, as they had cut the lights shortly after the attack had begun. Even with the advanced SCOPEtrooper visors, visibility was poor now.
Skarr strode across the remains of the mobile barricades that had formed part of the defences. A number of their opponents had escaped and fallen back. This concerned him, he suspected they would lay traps or try and ambush. In these conditions, and with the enemy’s superior knowledge of the tunnels, they would have to proceed slowly.
That was a problem. They had been instructed to come out of the tunnels behind enemy lines and hit the banks of generators. They had dawdled for too long in the tunnels instead of pressing ahead.
Skarr was a seasoned veteran of many campaigns. He knew that if command had ordered the enemies main power supplies destroyed before nightfall, that it was part of a wider plan. If they failed everything could fall apart. His train of thought was interrupted by a burst of static on the comms.
“Phantom Platoon, are you receiving this?” The voice was unfamiliar. Skarr signalled for his squadmates to advance with caution and he moved to a position of cover.
“Ghost strike leader here, this is a noisy channel, please switch to something more secure.” Skarr replied. No one who was a part of a special operations squad used their real name over open comms. Even on secure channels the names of such soldiers were kept
“Cannot comply, cannot reach you on comms on a different band.”
“Please present appropriate credentials.” Skarr replied. The man on the other end of the transmission rattled off a series of codewords. Skarr took a moment to decide if they were correct.
“What’s with the urgent transmission?” Skarr asked.
“You’re to pull back out of the tunnels now,”
    “Why?”
“I cannot relay that over a noisy channel sir,”
    “Understood,”

When Phantom Platoon emerged from the subway station they had originally entered they found a very different scene. Several squads of troopers had set up behind barricades. A range of heavy weapons lined the barricade and were now pointing down into the tunnels. There was enough weaponry on display to hold up an armored platoon.
Skarr rushed forwards to to friendly soldiers and addressing the first officer he saw, “The platoon lost two men down there, we nearly lost more pulling back out. What’s with the change of plans?”
“Lieutenant, we had orders to fortify this point because . . .”
“Scanners show two more, approaching!” another soldier behind the barricade shouted.
“More of yours?” the man asked Skarr. Skarr shook his head. “Get into cover then,”
The combined force waited behind the barricade. Skarr saw that the soldiers around him were visibly tense.
Two figures emerged from the darkness. Though barely visible Skarr was able to make out two men garbed in scarlet robes. Then two streaks of red light appeared in their hands.
    “Fire!”
Blaster fire poured into the tunnels towards the two figures. Every man across the defensive line rattled off shot after shot. The repeaters screamed as the torrent deadly particle blasts filled Skarr’s vision. After just a couple of seconds someone called to ceasefire.
There was no sign of the two men, but the soldiers waited a few seconds before sending a scout forward to look for bodies.
“No sign of them,” he reported.
    “What’s going on?” Skarr asked.
“Hostile Jedi,” the group’s officer replied. “They’ve been spotted around the city. Wiped out a few squads already, though three-four platoon killed out with a barrage of fire. Don’t ask where they came from, but a scout saw some head into the tunnels. Command figured you wouldn’t stand a chance down there so pulled you out.”
Skarr didn’t reply. He just looked back down the tunnel where the two figures had been stood.
“Your men are to head to where we’re hiding the LAAT’s behind our lines and wait for more orders,”

Jedi. The word lingered as a bad taste on Skarr’s tongue. The semi-mythical warriors had rarely been seen in the war or at least very few had been seen during the campaigns Skarr had participated in. In fact, the Ghost leader’s only experience with Jedi had been during the Agea Campaign. Norith had pushed his squad ahead and decided to lay in wait for the Jedi. Not one of his blaster bolts had touched the man. Even the explosives Skarr had triggered in that icy cavern had somehow left the Jedi unharmed.

He had heard whispered rumors of the Thrawnist Jedi. Injured men coming back from the front lines had spoken of ferocity unlike any they had seen. If these type of Jedi were here on Colaris, Skarr did not wish to be anywhere near them. The man nodded his thanks to the officer commanding the barricade and grabbed the chip with the LAAT coordinates. He plugged the chip into his helmet and watched the map and coordinates pop up on his HUD. Skarr motioned for his squad to gather around.

“We’re going to be meeting a few LAATs in our own territory. Our orders are a stealth attack on Ginnetti Tower. We’re to inflict as much damage as possible. When we have been discovered things will only get tougher. Reinforcements, heavy weapons, possibly even Jedi. In the event that we’re discovered, we have to make our way down to their vehicle garage. Disabling their vehicles is key to make this attack successful. Are we clear?”

The squad looked at each other hesitantly as all of them contemplated the appearance of Jedi. Despite the hesitance, they sounded the affirmative. Skarr clapped each of them on the shoulder and waited for Wraith to finish their talk. Dusk walked over to stand beside the strike leader of Ghost. The Wraith leader waited several seconds before speaking.

“Jedi, huh?” Dusk asked.

“Seems like it.” was Skarr’s short reply. “Congratulations on your promotion. I’m sure you’ll do the Empire proud.”

“Thanks. Should we go now?”

Norith motioned for him to lead the way. The platoon formed up and made their way through the snow. The LAAT rendezvous was a few kilometers away, so the platoon spread out a bit. Skarr wanted clear warnings of patrols. He shifted the rifle in his hands and fell in beside Therex and Terre. The two of them looked slightly harried, but otherwise fine. Skarr realized that he had been hoping for a bit of rest. Looking at his squad made him feel tired. He looked down and noticed just how battered his armor really was. The only piece of his armament that actually worked within the 90% range was his dual pistols. Which had been barely used the whole campaign.

He switched on one of his rarely used HUD features, the mirror. The man who stared back at him was haggard looking. It seemed to be an accurate portrayal of how Skarr felt. He shook his head and turned the mirror off. It was not time for him to rest yet. But he was going to go on a much needed leave after this campaign. If all went well and he didn’t die, he’d feel like he deserved it.

“Keep it tight,” the SL advised as the squad advanced through the snow. In black armour the Storm-Commandos' stood out against the pure snow, but as night fell they would feel less exposed.
“Intersection ahead is the rendezvous point,” one of the squad members advised after checking a mapping device. The Vast Empire were not able to use their own military satellites, with Thrawn having space-superiority. Instead they relied on the inaccurate civilian system in place and old fashioned map reading skills.
This section of the city was relatively intact. On the outskirts of the city's business sector, the buildings around them were generally ten-story high office blocks. It was disturbingly quiet at the moment, usually the sound of fire-fights started to ring out across the city early in the evening as special forces squads started to work. The crunching of boots on thick snow seemed concerningly loud.
“This is the spot,” the map reader added as they reached a cross road between four buildings. The group kept close to one building and waited. They had been instructed to meet an individual who was taking part in “special operations.” The vague instruction did not sit well with the squad leader.
One of the squad shouted a warning and the group turned towards an alleyway, rifles shouldered. A small man in civilian dress approached the group with his arms held out to the side. It concerned the squad leader that the approaching man had not been spotted earlier. Then he noticed that the civilian was garbed in clothing made of shades of grey that would be hard to pick out in the dark. This was probably the man they had been sent to meet then.
“Who are you?” Chaval, the squad leader asked. Seeing little threat in the approaching man, half of the squad had turned away and were scanning the rest of their surroundings.
“I believe you are looking for a Stephen Jones,” the man replied. There was a pause before Chaval nodded at his squad, who turned their weapons away from the man. Chaval had been working behind enemy lines for enough time to know that if you were told to pick someone up, no questions asked, and that the person was dressed as a civilian that they were likely a spook.
“We were instructed to pick you up and proceed back to our lines,”
“Correct,” replied to man, who lowered his arms and smiled thinly.
“Is there a specific location?” Chaval asked. He noticed the large bag slung across “Stephen's” back. Maybe a spy, maybe bringing back enemy plans or computers?” he thought to himself.
“Yes there is,” he replied, handing over a datapad.
“Good,” Chaval replied. He handed the map to the squad member who had been navigating before. “We can pick a route that . . .”
“Not necessary,” Raziel replied. “I believe this is a meeting of circumstance as your squad was close by. I already have a route back that will avoid running into any opposition.”
“Then why are we coming with you?” Chaval replied. He was perhaps crossing a line here, command had told him to do as instructed. Commandos rarely followed formal protocol though.
“You're needed for another mission, an assault on a Thrawnist base of operations via LAAT. I can guide you on a safe path back to our side of the city.” Raziel paused for a moment, feeling the commando's apprehension. “Of course it would be safer for me to go back through the city with a squad of seasoned commandos,” he decided to add.
“Very well, if you're guiding us I want clear instructions and one of my men will take point.” Chaval said.
“Fine, how are you for supplies?” Raziel asked.
“Surviving, we'll need to restock ASAP” Chaval replied.
“I assume you've been living off half rations?” Raziel asked.
“Quarter,” Chaval replied. It was hard working keeping up your strength in the freezing cold with not enough food to go around. The shops had been looted by civilians or soldiers long ago.
“Ah well then, you might like these,” Raziel reached into his large bag and pulled out a smaller satchel. He tossed it to the squad leader. Chaval opened it to find it stuffed with packets of condensed food. A veritable treasure trove in these conditions.
“Appreciated,” Chaval said, nodding to the small man. He tossed the satchel to one of his squad, who had a look before shouldering it.
“Awesome, he even had the good flavours,” the squad member quipped.
“You guys ever had Kuati-spiced nerf that tasted as fucking hideous as those packets?” Raziel asked.
“Heh, there's a reason we only had the Kuati-spiced nerf packets left!” another squad member replied.
“I was going to try eating the yellow snow first!” another said with a chuckle.
“Quiet now,” Chaval instructed. “If you're leading you'll also need to . . .” the squad leader's train of thought was interrupted by a burst of static on the comms.
    “Pinned down . . . lost the repeater . . . Jedi . . .”
Chaval turned to the rest of his squad and ignored Raziel. “Where did that come from?” he asked.
“South,” replied one of the squad. “That's the spec ops channel, must be one of ours.” The channel was only for emergencies, Chavel knew. Even a private encrypted signal could be picked up, even if not decoded when behind enemy lines. Another transmission came through, this time much clearer.
“Four-two can you hear us? This is Four-seven. We are in the tower block opposite you. We will provide covering fire, what floor are you on”
“That's Nige's squad,” Chaval said to himself.
    “Receiving your tr . . . comms damaged . . . se . . . repeat seventh floor. We require ur . . .” the broken signal resumed.
“Four-seven this is Four-nine.” Chaval spoke after switching his broadcast signal to the appropriate channel. “What is your position?”
“Sector C5, the AlCom building, Regency Street,”
Chaval looked to his mapper, who said: “That's only half a click north,”
“Four-nine, we are en-route. ETA five minutes,” Chaval said. Then he turned to look at Raziel.    “Some men from our Company are under fire near here. We're providing assistance: you can stick close; hunker down here; or head off on your own.”
“I know,” Raziel replied. It was only then that Chaval noticed the flesh coloured speaker in his ear.
A civvie-dressed bloke walking behind enemy lines with access to spec-ops channels is definitely a spook, Chaval thought to himself.
“You won't be able to help those men,” Raziel said.
“And how can you be sure?” Chaval asked. Raziel didn't reply. “We move North.”

~

“We're exposed here,” one of Chaval's men said as they approached the source of the distress signal. The two buildings that Four-seven and Four-two were in stood on opposite sides of a six lane wide road. If there were enemy soldiers in those buildings, Chaval's squad had very little cover.
“That one is AlCom!” said one of the men, pointing to the building on their right. Several of the windows on the building on the left lit up, and the sound of blaster fire reached them.
“We head into the building on the left and work out way up to extract Four-two,” Chaval instructed. He counted up to the floor where the reflections of blaster fire had been seen. Seventh floor, he confirmed to himself.
“Where did the spook go?” one of the squad asked. Chaval looked around. Their guide has vanished on the journey.
“Don't call him a damn spook out loud, and did anyone see him go?” Chaval said. No one replied. “Right then, Four-seven this is Four-nine. We are going to try and reach Four-two and assist them in . . .”
“Negative, hold your position. Four-two is lost, we're making our way down.”
    “Damnit,”
Blaster fire raced between the two buildings then. Chaval's squad dropped to their knees and scanned the buildings above them as glass rained down on the pavement below. Blast fire arced from the building on the right only, there was no return fire.
With a crash part a whole section of windows broke away from the building on the left. Then the impossible happened. A scarlet robed figure leapt from that building and sailed through the air. A red lightsaber was held out before him. With a crash he smashed through the windows on the AlCom building. The blaster fire intensified as bolts came back out through the same window. Then they abruptly halted.
“That's not possible,” one of the squad said. Looking back and forward at the fifty metre jump.
“The Jedi are supposed to be gone,” another said.
“Four-seven, this is Four-nine.” Chaval said into his comms. There was no reply.
“Suggest we fall back,” another commando said. No one said a word, but the squad started falling back from the buildings, covering each other's retreat.
Then the Jedi appeared at the entrance to the AlCom building. The squad froze as the lone man stepped out into the road. His scarlet robes fluttered in the breeze behind him, and he tilted his head to one side as he regarded the commando squad curiously.

There was a snap-hiss as he brought his lightsaber to life. The red blade matched his robes and he pointed it towards the squad and smiled.
“Open fire!” Chaval ordered, but before a single shot had been fired and unseen force smashed into his chest and threw him from his feet.
Chaval was quick to recover, grimacing against the pain and reaching for his blaster carbine. The Jedi was rushing towards them now.
He took aim quickly and fired three shots in rapid succession. The Jedi blocked them all with his weapon. He appeared to move to block each shot before Chaval had even depressed the trigger.
Another squad member was on his feet and firing a moment later, and then a third. As they poured blaster fire towards the Jedi he seemed to struggle. The Jedi slowed his approach, keeping the lightsaber closer to his chest. Chaval began to hold some hope as they tested their opponent's limits. But as a fourth squad member raised his rifle there was a sickening crack and he fell to the ground with a scream. Chaval paid it no heed and carried on firing.
Then the Jedi stopped dead. Blood splattered forwards from a wound in his chest and the saber fell from his grip. Chaval's squad continued to fire, and the Jedi was peppered with blaster bolts as he dropped to the ground.
It was only when Chaval started to approach the body that he noticed the missing spook. He was standing about twenty metres behind the Jedi's body and was casually holstering a blaster pistol.
As Chaval approached the body of the Jedi he fired another pair of shots into it's skull, just to be certain.
“Kailen is dead sir,” he heard from behind him. Chaval briefly turned around to look. The fourth man who had gone for his rifle - Kailen - was still on the ground, his head twisted all the way around. Gruesome, Chaval thought to himself.
“I suggest we get back to our route,” Raziel suggested as he approached the group.
“We thought you'd left us, that was a tidy shot,” Chaval said.
“I had, and it was a lucky shot,” Raziel corrected. “I happened to be in a good position, so took advantage of the situation.”
    “Thanks,” Chaval replied.

Raziel looked down at the Reborn corpse. That's two down, he thought to himself. Hiding his presence in the Force so that the Jedi hadn't sensed his approach had been trivial. Clouding the Reborn Jedi's mind so that he didn't sense the danger, and also manipulating events so that the Commando squad actually thanked him for using them as bait had been far more difficult.
There was much more work to be done tonight, he knew. For now he would guide the commando squad to the location of the LAATs and Phantom Platoon. There were ten more Reborn Jedi in this city that would be dealt with.

For once Drex had given his ear to the words of his command, the Vast Empire paid him and in return he shot things, mere enemy grunts didn’t bother him so much, after all they were only men. But these jedi and the discontent within the ranks brought with an outspoken mention troubled him They bleed and they die like anything else, right? He summarized uncertainly against the weight  this newly added threat carried.

Dusk had spoken, briefly, on the tasks at hand and the dangers present before conferring with Skarr, his tone had maintained professionalism throughout. Yet to Drexhels limited understanding his squad leader had attained his position both recently and on field. While he couldn't sympathize to this plight Drex felt the lack of his usual distilled judgement towards his peer If he carries us through this I might even listen to him in the future he smirked and cocked his head at the men in charge as they called the order for movement.

Spread by estimated gaps of ten to twenty meters, apart but still visible they made off, the air was crisp enough to sting the throat of a naked breath and the snow compressed under foot of weighted boots. Drex wore a face cold and straight as he tried to stay out of his own head, these daydreams in important settings had started to compromise his ability as a soldier, it was only to easy to hesitate in the face of shock, this proved the case as a hand tapped his quickly ridging back.

“Drex right?” said an uplifted voice, Drexhel turned to find the trooper from earlier introduced as Urakai.

He nodded and resumed pace “Do you do that often?” he asked with a surly tone, he did not like surprises.

“What? Sneak up on the overly tense? Sure why not” Drex could feel the casual little smile beaming even through a face guard “Why so tense anyway? Worried about something?”.

Drexhel paused a moment and removed his facial obstructions then lit up a cig “I’m thinking about trying not to think, I know that sounds strange but it helps” he took a drag and inhaled deeply.

“You shouldn't do that” Urakai shook his head.

“What? Smoke? Are you a doctor or something?”  He quizzed flicking the surplus ash from his fingers.

“Yep, medic, and I was talking about taking your helmet off, I can’t replace your head you know”. He said, pointing at Drex with a light chuckle barely detectable in the back of his more upfront tone.

He threw the cig down with a hiss it was extinguished by the snow and shoved his helmet back on “Happy?”.

“I’m always happy” Urakai elongated the middle word of his phrase for effect, sarcastic, joking or sincere Drex could not tell.

There was a long pause in replying which took the lead for silence when Drex started checking over his odds and ends clips and rummaging his pack for whatever inconsiderable items he might have placed on his person. These marching times bored Drex, he actually valued being shot at more than he ever did walking, even over a short distance, it was most likely the waiting or the tension it brought about him, he disliked that uncomfortable feeling with intense passion.

“Did you see that?” Urakai had placed a halting hand on Drexhels chest plate.

“Yup” he replied as his finger jabbed his com unit “Strike team leaders, do we expect wildlife locally or is unidentified movement a problem here?”.

His shoulder ached; the drugs had removed the pain but the arm still felt sluggish and heavy. On a more optimistic note, whether it was the drugs or a simple placebo effect, he definitely felt more upbeat. The same could not be said of anybody else. The squads were subdued, quieter than even Jamasis was comfortable with.

“You’d have thought someone had just died or something,” he remarked to nobody in particular. Apparently the recent loss of a few men in the withdrawal from the tunnels made that particular comment inappropriate as nobody deigned to reply to him. “Hey, wraith-person, what’s your name?” he continued, nudging the trooper closest to him.

“Reign.”

“Pretend for a minute that I’m an idiot-“

“Already done.”

“and explain to me why everybody’s freaking out right now.” Despite the helmet and tinted visor Jamasis could feel the eyes on him, uncertain if he was genuinely ignorant or not.

“Maybe because of the Jedi?”

“Now pretend I don’t know what a Jedi is.”

“A mythical warrior that apparently fights for our enemy? Whispered legends of heroism, of secret orders and so forth that dozens of soldiers have come back from the front line with? Supernatural powers and a weapon, like a vibroblade, but made of pure light that can cut through armour like paper?”

“Strike Team leaders, do we expect wildlife locally or is unidentified movement a problem here?

It’s a problem. Spread out and take cover.

Jamasis pressed himself up against a wall and peered inside the building. It had been burnt out from the inside though the exterior seemed intact. He clambered in through the window and made his way down the road from inside. There was nobody, nothing visible though the sound of distant fighting was more intense than it had been for weeks. Across the street other members of the strike teams crept along, all looking for the source of the disturbance. The sudden sound of footsteps to his left almost set Jamasis off firing, controlling himself just short of decimating a rather large, but clearly domesticated, dog. Stupid bastard, he thought as he let it lick his glove.

“It’s a dog,” Jamasis muttered into the comlink, and the squad continued onwards. Irritatingly the dog seemed inclined to follow, most likely having been abandoned since the majority of the population fled. In fact it seemed surprising no desperate trooper had decided to make the hound into a moderately tasty lunch. “You’re lucky I prefer cats for dinner,” he walked back towards the wraith trooper.

“So is a Jedi just a type of special forces trooper, or do they actually have some weird magical powers?”

“From what I heard they’re the most dangerous people in the galaxy. Most of the survivors were the last of their unit.”

“So if I shoot one in the face he dies?”

“It’s not that simple, they destroy entire units on their own. We haven’t killed or captured a single one. I didn’t even think the reports were accurate.”

“I’ve destroyed entire units on my own- I’ve even done it by accident. I sure as hell die if I get shot in the face. There’s nothing to worry about.”

“How are you even alive?”

“Hostiles are ahead, do we engage?” came the message over the comlink.

Is it another dog? Jamasis asked sarcastically.

“A dozen thrawnists one fifty metres ahead.

“Have the spotted us?” Dusk queried in a hurried tone as the platoon moved to protected positions behind rubble and mortar cracked buildings.

“They’re moving to cover, I’d say that’s a positive, Phantom, engage at will” Skarr called the order almost in time with the squeeze of the first trigger.

Drex could feel the heat of the bolt he barely avoided as he pulled his head back behind the cracked wall he’d chosen for cover.  This is more like it! his thoughts raced for some clever tactical manoeuvre that may put the strike teams ahead but he came up empty under the situations pressure. He’d been marching near the back of the spread out platoon and now gave himself the challenge of an inferior line of site. He could clearly see four of his counterparts if he stuck his head out and only one from full cover.

“Got him!” Yelled one of the Ghost troopers as a thrawnist trying to switch cover fell, twitched and died with a large smoking bolt hole in the right side of his armor.

“Well done Mox, now let’s push this home, we've got places to be!” Cried Skarr as he rushed forward to a closer cover.

Drex could see only Urakai from his standing point, the man had been in a relatively close position when the fire fight started. Drexhel decided to follow his lead as Ura too pushed forward, breaking into a run as he turned towards the fight, he could see the man he followed sliding into cover and now the rest of the squad with their mass of return fire.  The short run granted him enough time to see two more dead enemies sprawled and bleeding into the snow.  He covered five meters before panic struck, finding himself in the open and in line with the barrel of an enemy rifle so he sprung forwards and to the left hoping to make it through the window nearby. Drexs body passed unscathed but out of the three shots fired one scuffed his hip and a second caught his foot. The impact drove his lower back into the frame behind him and his legs swung forward hitting the opposite end of the window, his head collided with the hard floor of the building interior before he could get his hands out to stop himself.

“Drex is hit!” Urakai called being the only man in position to see it.

“Drex, report!” Dusk demanded urgently through the short range com.

His vision blurred and his foot burned, he grunted a reply as he attempted to climb upright “I’m fine, I’ll be back out there in a second”

There was no hesitation in Dusks next order as he spoke “Karash, Reign, get to an upper level of one of these buildings and lay down an elevated suppression fire”

Skarr followed up the order with one of his own “Hammer, Therex , do the same, support them from the opposite flank”.

Drex had managed to pull his weight vertically though he stood on one foot, the room he had landed in was almost stripped bare. Whoever had been her before the fighting started had taken what they could. There where stairs leading to a second floor, if they needed suppression fire that was something he could certainly do. He pushed himself from the wall he rested on and hopped quickly to the steps. The support rail was damaged and the steps where missing large chunks, scorch marks scored the walls, this place had seen gunfire long before they had arrived. Carefully he tackled the incline and at the last three straight cut bumps he made a jump for the end. His wounded foot bumped the last step, he clenched his jaw and cringed, falling to his knees, he crawled with his chin tucked to his chest, taking drawn out inhalations and short sharp exhales.

The battle outside had picked up, the increase in gunfire could be heard more clearly from his own side looks like things are going well he thought as he grabbed the frame of the upper level window. He smashed through the glass with the butt of his E-45 to see that victory was not long off, the last four thrawnists where attempting a retreat and failing. He shouldered his weight against the edge of the window and took aim, firing bursts he caught the legs of an open enemy, taking a second to aim he fired again to finish his target.  The last three had now given in to terror and ran into the open, the quickly advancing Phantom platoon made short and easy work of them with a few precise rounds.

“Sound off and regroup!” Skarr issued in an assured tone after looking over the street where the enemy had been.

A chorus of call signs verified by the word here complied with the order. Drex took longer to meet the squad as he hobbled out of the building wincing every time the toes of his right leg touched the ground. His head hurt and the probable impairment of normal instincts may have helped with the pain of his foot.

Dusk was speaking with the Platoon commander, Drex assumed it was on the course of action they should take next, Dusk walked ahead a little, looked over the road ahead and returned to Skarrs side who spoke to the men.

“Make a quick check over your equipment, do a search of the dead, they may have something useful and could one of our medics take a look and Drexhel, see if you can get him in working order, we move in five” he proceeded to start looking over his own equipment.

Drex sighed the moved to an upbeat little smile as he thought to himself this is definitely more like it.

The problem with being the best; and as far as Jamasis was concerned the strike teams were undoubtedly so, was that your needs tend to differ from the norm. Thrawnist soldiers almost exclusively used E-11 rifles, the same model as many of the empire’s troopers, and that meant both sides could survive off of each other’s lost supplies. Except when you were the best. Then you had a much greater selection of equipment to select from and Jamasis invariably went with his A280 rifle. This was ideal if not least because it meant he could always trust his gun to fire, whatever the conditions, provided he took good care of it. The downside was that useful ammunition was much harder to come across.

“They really should give them better weapons. For all his success grand admiral Thrawn could have killed me a dozen times over if more of his soldiers used armour-piercing rifles.”

“I’m sure killing you is his priority Jamasis. Do they have anything useful?” replied Skarr.

“Ammo for E-11’s, guess you could steal the armour if you’re really desperate.” He kept going through the dead men’s personal possessions and was amazed to find something resembling food. It tasted awful, in all honesty, but he had been on the move for hours now.

There was also a photograph in the trooper’s pouch. A young girl of around ten beamed at something behind the lens, presumably a daughter, perhaps a sister? Would she be waiting for this rapidly freezing corpse to come home and embrace her? She would probably cry when she found out, if she ever found out more than M.I.A. There would be upset family, devastated friends, those who hadn’t already been killed in the conflict. Jamasis was pretty sure he didn’t feel guilt over any of this, but he felt something out of place. Again his memories couldn’t explain the feeling in his stomach that something was missing.

Salken, you’re one good explanation away from me removing every organ from your body individually.

“Jamasis, we’re moving out.” He looked around and noticed everybody else seemed to be getting to leave, whilst one of the wraith troopers was being helped to his feet by a medic. He silently berated himself for completely losing focus.

That was the other drawback of being the best. Regular troopers got sleep, not much, but they got a little. Strike teams could function more effectively with less, but a tired strike team would be given another job to do, then another and then another. It built up beyond what anybody could handle.

“How far is it back to our area?” Jamasis asked.

“Apparently things are shifting around right now. It’s only around a kilometre to our destination though.”

“Isn’t that supposed to be deep behind our lines?” queried someone else.

“Like I said, things are shifting around. Until we get told something else we keep going forwards,” ordered Skarr.

So we’re going from fight to fight without a break and the lines are more blurred than ever? This should be fun. The possibility of testing himself in some massive conflict set in a ruined city actually cheered him up.
