The Second Lieutenant hadn't had an experience this serious since his early days in his career as a fighter pilot.  He could not reminisce about the situation any longer, because the inevitability of failure had now been laid out in front of the squadron, in the worst case scenario they could have ever thought would happen.

The A-wings split into their two squadrons; one stayed with its ship, the Persistence of Time, whilst the other headed straight for the pilots of Viper Squadron.  The trio of pilots were now facing the opposite direction of their newly arrived enemies, and were now putting their engines at full in an attempt to get away from the now chasing rebellion fighters.  The A-wings ability as a fighter matched that of the Imperials TIE Interceptor, and then some.  The fighters that had arrived with the Persistence of Time were now gunning through the debris that had now covered nearly the entire area, paying no attention to their surroundings.  They were, after all, just artificially created programs that carried out their duties, no matter what the cost.

These fighters are all programmed to do something in a certain way, unless controlled by a human source, so, theoretically, they can all be destroyed in the same manner, whatever that may be.  The source of their programming cannot be one that has created them flawless...

"Hmm," hummed the pilot to himself, as if he was deep in thought.

Interesting...

Jaden thought long and hard about his position within the squadron as a fighter pilot, and the things he had accomplished so far.  He couldn't deny the fact that this was one of the most challenging situations that he had experienced in a large amount of time, even if it was a simulation.  It was now beginning to affect him more emotionally than before, twisting his mind into some sort of sluggish hell.  The insanity that the pilot was now feeling take him over during his time of escape, drove him to do anything he thought was possible at the time.  Soon, the situation began to turn into more than just a simulation.

He was now entwined in a battle with himself to gain composure.  The simulation was now becoming a bitter reality to the pilot; his mental barriers were beginning to break down with each breath that he took.

These influences from the simulation had now created a monster.

And that monster was in the hot seat of one of the galaxies most powerful fighters, the TIE Interceptor.

As the A-wings continued their pursuit of the trio formation of Viper pilots, they kept their artificial minds on the one thing they were programmed to do.  Destroy the leader of their opposition before even worrying about the rest of the individuals.  Every programmed mind was dead set on the same exact thing, no matter their level of intelligence at this point.

The seemingly over skilled pilot threw the fighter into an Immelman maneuver, bringing the fighter around into the opposite direction of travel, and also to a higher point of altitude.  He watched intently as the A-wings completely ignored the heat signature and sensor readings of the fighter.  Their level of difficulty was created to bring down that which was the most powerful thing in the squadron - The leader.

Jaden had some how discovered the flaw in the programming.

Holy mother of...What?  This is sick!

And he would now take advantage of the situation; tearing the squadron of A-wings from limb to limb with the element of surprise he was sitting on.

The thought made goosebumps form all throughout the surface of his skin.

"One, they're all coming after you.  There's a flaw in their suped-up version of difficulty, and its that they are to take out the leader of the squadron, in hopes that those underneath him/her will fall shortly there after," said Jaden, a more enthusiastic yet tainted tone stuck with his voice as he explained.  "I'm going to try something that is literally impossible, and I'm going to need your cooperation in doing so"

The Commanding Officer took more than the time he should have to reply, but it was worth waiting for.

"Your last plan failed, and if this one ends up the same way...."

Jaden interrupted his superior positioned wingman abruptly.

"Then we all end up going to the same place.  Right out of these simulators and back to our regular lives"

Tomas gulped at the thought, a full squadron of A-wings all with one goal in mind: to hunt him down and destroy him. How was he possibly going to manage that.

"Touche, Viper Seven...so, got any ideas?" Tomas remarked, to be "outnumbered" 12 to 1 wasn't exactly a feeling he wanted to think about. He was sure that was a normal feeling, overwhelming...but normal. Not that many pilots ever find themselves needing to feel it. Sure he had C-3PX2 with him, but the A-wings weren't worrying about the droid...just him.

“Well...you could start by running.” Jaden replied, as if it was obvious. And for good reason when it came down to it as it was pretty clear that Tomas would have to get some distance between him and his attackers. With a chuckle, Tomas pulled himself together, and banked hard. It turned into follow the leader, as Tomas took off with the A-wings gaining ever so slowly behind. Somewhere in the rear were Jaden was pulling out of his maneuver, completely ignored by the Rebel fighters.

“They're gaining on me Viper Seven!” Tomas warned through the comm. He rechecked his sensors to confirm; the A-wings were in fact making up the distance a bit at a time.

“Just hang in there, kid.” Did he just call me kid? This simulation sure is wearing on us. How long have we been in here anyways? “There!” Jaden pulled out of the maneuver and began peppering the A-wing formation with fire. One, two, THREE, FOUR fell and still the A-wings pursued. Suddenly a turbolaser blast sizzled nearby. It was inaccurate, a warning shot more than anything but it rang bells in Tomas' head. He was approaching the edge of the Rebel capitol ships. Just then Jaden took out fifth A-wing...

Seven on three, better...but I have nowhere else to go...what now?

Its snowing outside the rumbling sound
Of engines roar in the night

The mission is near the confident men
Are waiting to drop from the sky

The blizzard goes on but still they must fly
No one should go where eagles dare

The lyrics of one of his favorite songs played over and over in his head as the Interceptor seemed to simply just 'tear' the enemy squadron of A-wings to shreds.  The fault within the simulation program was one that didn't go unnoticed, and the problem it had caused greatly reduced the number of Rebellion fighters that were currently on the offensive.  Jaden thought to himself that the one responsible was probably paying for it dearly.  Now cringing with shame, the creator had to deal with the burden of Viper Squadrons success on their shoulders.  Well, not quite yet.

"Tommy, good job on following those instructions," said Jaden, letting more of the green bolts cut through his victims shields.  The A-wing struggled to get away from the interceptor pilot; the maniac within the fighter was a blood thirsty monster now.  He toyed with the fighter as if to taunt the pilot within, hoping that somehow the actions he did towards the artificial intelligence would end up affecting the entire simulation as a whole.

Finally, he let the bitmap imaged fighter out of his clutches, only to quickly pursue it once again after his fun, destroying it with ease.  Another kill racked up for him as he continued to slay each fighter in his way, Tomas now back on the offensive, with C-3PX on his side.  Together, the three Viper pilots bagged the rest of the A-wings, and started to decide what their next plan of attack against  the Persistence of Time and its fighter compliment, would be.

* * * * *

"Did you see that?" said Ibram, his jaw nearly dropping  to the floor.

"What?" remarked Aleia, "The A-wing serial killer thats on the loose out there?"

All of the Viper Squadron pilots that had been knocked out were watching the observation monitor.  They were now watering at the mouth after having just witnessed the previous event of attacks made by the three remaining pilots of the squadron.

The members of Viper Squadron all laughed as they witnessed each of the events happen though their own eyes.  Most of the time, they had been interested in the functioning of each pilot individually, but now they were all nearly melting over the massive amount of skill that the trio of pilots were producing.

The stats rolled down the screen, and the "Oohs" and "Aahs" seemed to amaze the pilots even more, especialy Viper Seven's wingman, Ibram Tyrol.

He had been watching the entire mission since his knock out.  He was glued right to the screen almost immediately after returning back to the simulation room.  His interests had been more in the superior ranking officer that he had just finished flying with, and he was hell bent on figuring out how the middle-aged man managed to pull off some of the maneuvers he had done so far.  His kill count was into double digits early into the battle, and what he had achieved thus far nearly blew the pilots mind.  Viper Squadron was doing well in their fight, but now was a very trivial time for the pilots currently in the scenario.

They had to figure out a plan.

Soon.

Tomas let out a sigh as the last A-wing fell to their laser blasts. No more fighters hunting him down, at least not for now. He had a feeling they wouldn't get the same chance next time, as at this difficulty level the AI was likely capable of at least a little learning. They would see that each member of the squadron was just important and dangerous as the rest and to leave them unchecked would be disaster.

As if we needed yet another capital ship of the New Republic's to worry about, Tomas thought, muttering to himself simultaneously. They were already massively outnumbered and the few ships they had remaining were getting pelted into oblivion. Probably the most daunting realization regarding the Persistence of Time was that it sat much closer than the others of the Rebel fleet.

There was an eerie calm for several moments as for the first time in what seemed like hours the Viper pilots were left alone. Tomas circled, gathering in a view of their surroundings. They had been completely fenced in by the Rebel capital ships on all sides, and they couldn’t jump to hyperspace as the handful of interdictor-class ships sat strewn about the enemy formation. Simply put, there was nowhere to go but out … simulator ‘death’ that was. It reminded Tomas of one of those arenas he’d heard about in the past. Cultures would build coliseums and watch from the stands as two sides battled to the death. Now here they were, encircled, trapped … waiting for the next wave of opposition. Would it go like this until the AI found something to match them, all the while whittling away their numbers? Or would it eventually give in, and simply overpower the few Imperial ships that remained?

Whatever the case, Tomas really saw no other way around it except to take as many of the enemy fighters and ships with them as they fell. He’d lost count of how many kills he and the rest of the squadron had managed to pull off already, but he wasn’t satisfied. As long as his simulated fighter was running, he was going to fight his heart out.

The trio of pilots had been left alone for some time now, and it only made Jaden think of what could be coming up next in their simulation battle that never seemed to end.  The Light Mon Calamari Cruiser Persistence of Time was now edging in closer to their position, even as they did flight manuevers now packed tightly into formation again.  Jaden kept on Tomas' starboard side, as C-3 took the port side, respectively.

"Tommy, this Mon Cal is encroaching rather quickly," said Jaden, hoping that his new thoughts were not about to come true.  He was still feeling the rage that had consumed his emotions not long before, but he had settled down a bit more now.  The temptation to leap the fighter from the flight and take the Persistence of Time by himself was always there, even though he knew it was literally impossible for him to succeed in destroying it.  But then again, it was the same way with a lot of things he and the squadron had done so far in the simulation.  What would happen next?

"I can see that," said Tommy.  "Keep tight in formation, and follow my lead.  We're not going to go with any of those weird stunts this time, because I fear that this may be the end of all of us during this simulation run.  That artificial intel of those fighters learns, and I'm sure that now, it's learned that all of us pose an equal threat to their systems."

And as if right when his words rung out the enemy artificial intelligence could here it, two flight of A-wings zipped out of the MC40a's hanger, and they were heading straight for the pilots of Viper Squadron.  At least what remained.

"Two flights of A-wings sir," said C-3, "They've split up, and look to be coming to try and box us in."  C-3 had always been the one to read out the statistics during the battle, and it actually helped, because the pilots who were tied up in their fighting, didn't have time to pay attention to what fighters were being spit out, and what threats were posed to them.

"Well guys, here's the part where we try and take down eight more A-wings.  Keep in formation, we're not splitting up.  We're not going to pull any huge stunts here.  We're going to take these rebel fighters down with our pure skill here.  Like I said, they've got to be running a lot smarter than before."

Jaden thought for a moment.  It was the only time that he actually didn't get to pull something crazy when a large amount of fighters were heading towards his position.  He fought hard against the temptation to leap out and take most of them on himself, but this time it wouldn't happen.

Alright Tommy...lets see what you've got

For what felt like the umpteenth time in the simulation Tomas took a deep breath to calm his nerves, before gritting his teeth and shifting his grip on the joystick. Flying lead, with C-3PX2 and Jaden on either side the trio screamed towards the enemy A-wings. Every so often, Tomas noticed one or both of the others creep up in the formation before dropping back to their original positions. I'm anxious too guys, glad to see you are too. Tomas thought, his adrenaline somehow managing to put him on a high yet again.

Up until now Tomas had been fighting desperately to survive and stay in the simulation. As they approached the eight A-wings outnumbered, and outgunned he realized they were about to face the smartest, most difficult challenge yet. Nevertheless, as they bore down on the enemy fighters he felt in a zone … like nothing could stop him. He knew this was a dangerous way to be feeling, and tried to suppress it, but there really was no denying it. His weapon, shield and system checks were fluid, effortless as if he wasn’t actually the one performing them.

Before them, the A-wings had split off into two columns. Each flight had formed up in the typical box formation employed by New Republic fighters. The nose of Tomas’ fighter now pointed at empty space; the gap between the approaching Rebel craft.

“We can’t let them get outside of us … they’ll tear us some new holes in no time.” Tomas pointed out over the comm. But he wasn’t really sure of an alternative, if they focused on the one flight on this first pass it would allow the second to flank them, and rip them to pieces anyways. The TIEs were outnumbered against an incredibly intelligent opponent. Tomas had to think of something … and fast … if they wanted to even survive this first fly-by.

Just then, the entire situation changed. The scenario was going to be harder, but one pilot would not have to face anymore of this hell. For this pilot, the simulation was over.

An alarm blared inside C-3PX2’s cockpit, it said only one thing; Incoming Ordinance.

“Viper Lead, Viper Five; Incoming Ordnance; Bulls-eye Seven O’clock; Type SARH, I will not be able to dump this one.” C-3PX2 said over comm.

A SARH, indicating a Semi-Active Radar Homing Missile, is one of the pilot’s worst enemies. It is difficult to dump, and almost impossible to dump off in open space.

“Copy Five; Distance?” Tomas asked.

“I can not get an exact fix on distance, I must have gotten fragged in one of the explosions; my radar is Tango Uniform. It is close, but I can not be sure how far out.”

“Can you Jam it?”

“Negative, Music is also Tango Uniform.”

“Frak, do you have a bearing for us to track it?”

“Negative. Permission to break formation.”

“Granted, try to lose it in the mix of fighters.”

“Copy, going past Military Speed, attempting to lose it.”

C-3PX2 broke off from the formation, and changed his vector to fly directly in front of the missile. His plan was suicide, but doing nothing would have no better outcome.

“Lead, Five; I am going to try to shoot it before it has time to arm. It would go with Zero Yield, Zero damage to me.” C-3PX2 said.

“Affirmative, Good Luck.” Tomas Replied.

He then passed military speed, and began to close the gap. The missile was shooting straight for him, also closing the gap.

“Weapons Range in Angels 30.”

He had a short distance to make the shot, one that would be either on his “virtual” tombstone, or the highlight of his “virtual” career.

“Bingo Vector, going for the Kill.”

C-3PX2 began to fire his Laser cannons at the SARH. Unfortunately for him, they all missed.

“Frak, no joy. Closure Rate Ten.

The missile continued to close its range.

“Time for round two.”

C-3PX2 made another attempt at taking it out. This time, be hit it, but it was not a good thing to die.

“Frak, Lead. Yield full, missile is armed.”

The missile exploded, taking parts of C-3PX2’s TIE fighter with it.

“Leave, Five; Declaring an Emergency. Bird is Foxtrot Uniform. Repeat, Foxtrot Un…” the message cut out short.

***

The Simulation Screen shut off, and the door to the simulator opened. C-3PX2 exited it. He was satisfied that he had made it that far into the simulation, but wondered what would happen next to his fellow pilots that were still “alive”.

He picked up a Mini-View screen, from that screen he would watch the remaining parts of the battle.

Jaden watched in horror as one of his best wing mates, and friends, was taken out of the simulation.  The fighter shredded to pieces as an out of nowhere homing missile collided with his fighter.  Jaden grinned as kept in pride the droids' last attempts at keeping himself in the simulation.  He had seen the missile coming, and trying to destroy something such as a homing missile such as the one that was trailing him, was a very brave act.  He would surely commend the pilot once they came together in the simulation room.

But that wouldn't be happening anytime soon.

These bastards are everywhere!  I can't even get a foothold on my position without noticing another one right on my tail or right in front of me!

"Tommy, breaking away now," said Jaden, "These sons of bitches are tearing me apart."

"Damn it seven, I thought we had this planned out to not get separated!" yelled the squadron commander, his hopes of keeping things together now completely shot down.  "You better keep yourself in the air as best as you can, we can't loose this right now!"

Three A-wings were now on his tail, and one on his nose.  He maneuvered best he could, keeping their shots at his aft.  The fighter in front was acting as an auxillary, making sure he couldn't get away from their angle of attack.  It was a devious tactic, but it was working.

The pilot now decided to use his last resort.  Something that he usually didn't do in his current situation, but it needed to be done to preserve his survival in the simulation until things got better.

Dive dive dive!

Both of his feet hit their respective rudder pedals at the same time as he jammed the control yoke straight forward.  He hadn't needed to cut the throttle, because the brakes did the job for him.

The fighter cut its immediate flight path, now sailing down off of his previous plane of flight.  He rolled the fighter as hard as he could, and warning lights began to ring out threw his fighter.  He was attempting to do something literally against the simulations restrictions, and the systems within the fighter couldn't take the speed he was now traveling at.  Energy seemed to drain from his body as his field of vision began to blur from the speed at which the view port of the fighter spun.  The enemy fighters flew straight on their previous path, un aware that he had dove straight down out of their angle of attack, but seconds later they caught wind of his actions; the fighters now pumping their throttle to catch up with him.

Oh my, theres no way I will make it out of this!

Just as he thought it was over, the one person he thought that wasn't there came to his assistance.  The lead enemy A-wing on his pursuit blacked out off his terminal, and then the second.  Tomas had played the situation out like butter.  He somehow knew the pilot would get into immediate trouble, and he had done the smart thing, he observed his surroundings and calculated exactly what needed to happen for his and also his wing man to survive.  Jaden pulled the fighter up out of the dive, one A-wing still on pursuit, and the other now in Tomas' hands.

"Man oh man Tommy, I thought I was done for."

"Keep your head in the game," said Tomas, "I don't know if I'll have the opportunity to cover your ass like that again, because we may have more to worry about next time.  That other flight of A-wings is just hanging there, and they look like they are about to come right for us."

Jaden was now very, very angry.  He didn't even feel the rage come into his emotions, but it was now controlling his every move as he S-turned on his flight plane, swinging around right behind his pursuing A-wing.  His cannons now lit up to their fullest;the green bolts of death now ripping into the enemy A-wings shields.  He was pissed, and the enemy was feeling the wrath.  But, while he continued to blast the enemy fighter, he checked around to see the other positions of its death bringing counterparts.  The rest of the fighters had formed up, and seemed to be waiting for their allies to be destroyed as they hung over the dogfight in front of them.  Their mother ship, the Persistence of Time, was now moving in closer to the fight, which only meant one thing.

The enemy was now going to attempt to finish off the fight, in the cheapest way possible.

Oh no...that MC40a has a payload that I didn't even think about.

"Tomas, watch that MC40," said Jaden, "It's got quite a payload of missiles, and it looks as if it's moving in closer to try and get a shot."

The A-wing previously on his pursuit, and now before him finally spun out of control as the green blaster bolts pelted its hull.  The fighter separated into a dozen pieces, and blipped off of his radar.  The viper pilot pulled the fighter away from the debris, noting that Tomas had taken out the other A-wing.  They instinctively formed up with each other as both pilots came to the realization that the other flight of A-wings was coming straight for them, and their mother ship, the Persistence of Time, was coming to give them a helping hand.

A payload of fifty missiles that I forgot about...and we're definitely not making it out of that situation if it decides to let them loose.

Following a miraculous save, in which Tomas destroyed a pair of A-wings off of Jaden's tail, he became acutely aware that a third had decided he was the more dangerous target at the time and had jumped in behind the squadron commander. The two Vipers had managed to be separated despite their attempts to prevent it.

Tomas swung his fighter in seemingly wild fashion, though each one had become a precisely planned out maneuver. The A-wing managed to match him move for move, but the unpredictability prevented the Rebel fighter to get off any damaging shots. Curiously, the second flight of A-wings had decided to hold back. As a result, rather than having 3 on 1 odds, the pair of Vipers were matched mono a mono with their opposition. As smart as the AI had become, there was just no substitute for a flesh and blood, human pilot behind the stick and in a one on one situation it would be hard to expect the simulated fighters to compete.

Tomas banked and through his fighter ‘upwards’ briefly before leveling out and swinging the craft around. The A-wing had bit on the upward climb and as Tomas turned he realized that neither fighter really held the advantage. Perfect, he thought, prepping for another maneuver to get the upper hand. With another roll, Tomas swooped into the side of his prey placing several shot off it’s shields and hull before it exploded spectacurally.

“Tomas, watch that MC40,” Jaden spoke up over the comm. “It’s got quite a payload of missiles, and it looks as if it’s moving closer to try and get a shot.” Tomas sighed as the two Vipers formed back up. It seemed it was just a matter of time before the person in control of the simulation pressed the theoretical (and physical) ‘death switch’.

The enemy A-wing exploded amazing as Jaden threw the interceptor back into a variety of maneuvers.  He couldn't figure out how he'd still lasted this long without his shields; he'd rerouted them earlier into the simulation.  Throughout the mission, things hadn't usually worked out to his individual favoring, due to his mis-judgment as a fighter pilot.  Most of his wing mates had sacrificed themselves just so that he could have stayed in the battle a little longer, but he also came the realization that he'd done nearly the same a couple of different times throughout the mission, especially in Tomas' favor.  The two of them had been working so well together, but the pressing issue involving the insanely skilled flight of A-wings, and their assistance, the Light Mon Calamari cruiser, could prove to be a much worse situation than those before.

Tommy we've gotta pull through this somehow.  There has got to be some way to figure this out where at least one of us doesn't go straight into the dirt.

There has got to be...some...way.  Some way to prevail against these computer generated foes!

The flight of A-wing fighters now finally began to move from their position, circling around the Mon Calamari for some unknown reason.

"They're stalling," called out Tomas, "They want us to move closer so that the Persistence of Time can get a better shot at us."

Jaden laughed.

"Those simulated foes of ours are acting a hell of a lot smarter than they're supposed to," said Jaden, "And that Mon Cal is somehow their ticket to our defeat.  I'm starting to think that not every one of those fighters is being controlled via computer intelligence."

The thought that one or more of the High Council members, or even better, one of the more distinguished pilots in the Navy, have being placed in a simulator to battle against the two remaining Viper Pilots, completely blew Jaden's mind.  He didn't think that the punch of that sort would end up being pulled, but his accusations could have possibly been wrong.

Son of a bitch...who else would be in this simulation besides...Shazam? Riel? Japheth?

"Well lets give them what they want," said Jaden, rerouting his energy to half of his shields.  He knew that he would have some sort of survival method ready for the A-wing pilots, if he at least had some sort of protection that he wasn't used to.  "If its not really computers controlling those enemy fighters, we're bound to find out somehow."

"Give them what they want?" yelled Tomas, "What do you mean?  The payload that cruiser is packing is not something we can go up against.  Thats suicide!  And the chances of our survival are based on sheer luck!"

Finally, he has come to spelling out the odds against him.  Now, we will succeed.

"Tomas, follow your instinct.  Those warheads that the enemy cruiser is going to start spitting out can be avoided quite easily, especially if we get their own fighters mixed in with us," said Jaden,  his voice now beginning to come to an 'evil cackle' type. "Just remember, there's not an impossibility factor affecting us anymore

"We're Viper Squadron pilots, and thats exactly what we do."

"Stare death straight in the eye with laughter."

With Jaden's confidence level at yet another level that Tomas didn't even really realize was possible, the two Viper pilots plotted their next move. The A-wings had held back, waiting for them to enter into range for the Persistence of Time's missiles. If that's what they wanted, that was what that is what the Rebels were going to get as the Vipers hurtled towards the formation and certain doom. The enemy would never expect them to attempt such a maneuver, and that very same reason was why it just might work.

With a loud battle cry, the two pilots raced into firing range getting off several pot shots at the A-wing formation in the process. None really doing any damage, but it did a good job of keeping the A-wings at bay.

“We fly...” Tomas shouted, adrenaline pumping through his veins. How he kept getting up for skirmish after skirmish was startling. It couldn't be healthy, the state they were putting their bodies in time and again. He recalled reading somewhere that too much adrenaline could kill, and wondering if prolonged levels such as this could be just as dangerous.

“They die!!!” Jaden finished off the squadron's motto. With quick adjustments, the two fighters screamed through the A-wing formation. The six fighters now intertwined, began the final dance. It was almost a matter of time before they were eliminated in Tomas' opinion. Either to these A-wings, or if the they somehow managed to get rid of them all they would be clean pickings for the Mon Cal cruiser.

If we get to that point, perhaps we'll come up with something to prolong our stay. Until then, we've got smaller fish to fry...

Jaden poured all that the interceptor had into the A-wing that was within his targeting reticule.  He couldn't seem to get a good lead on the fighter; both of them had been following each other for some time.  He wouldn't dare drop his speed and roll off into another maneuver, because another A-wing had been close on his pursuit for some time now.  His shields were set fully aft, in all hopes of bouncing back or absorbing any shots that his pursuer got off.  He hated relying on the sheilds strength while he kicked his own manuevers into gear, because he rarely had time to pay attention to what their exact strength actually was.  Which meant he could be caught off guard at any moment.

Every so often, the Light Mon Calamari cruiser would spit off a couple of warheads, but their targeting locks had been off; none of them had even touched the Viper pilots.  Though they hadn't come within a good range of the cruiser yet, the threat of them being shot down by a large volley of missiles was still there, and they headed that warning with good intentions in mind.

Tomas, on the other had, had already taken down one of the A-wings, despite his tone that Jaden had heard earlier.  For some reason, their morale had boosted lately, and their achievements had been towards the positive side of things.  They were working together, even though their flight manuevers were of completely different styles.  Tomas chose to do things more maturely than Jaden, but the veteran pilot knew how to get out of some terrible situations that the younger pilot did not.  Their level of experience had clashed with each other earlier in the simulation run, but now it seemed to have some sort of odd connection, brining them to a good level of success.

He is definitely going to be a very, very good fighter pilot in his career within this Navy.  I only wish I could have started off as good as he has...

"Tomas, heads up, you've got another A-wing on your six," said Jaden, struggling to get out of the cannon fire that was painting the rear end of his fighter.  "I can't help you out, I'm stuck here."

"I'll do my best to keep him off of my six, and you do your damn well best to make sure those two A-wings don't get you boxed in and take you out," said Tomas, "I'm not so completely sure I could handle all of these on my own."

Jaden cut the throttle and rolled downwards, letting his rear pursuit overshoot his position, flying out straight in front of his fighter.  He quickly latched on to the fighters position; the bursts of linked bolts ramming straight into the aft shields of the A-wing, and within seconds, crippling those shields.

"Woo! Shields are down and the hull is critical," yelled Jaden, "Scratch my last call for help."

The veteran pilot was feeling great, and his shots were showing it.  The marksmanship he had gained throughout his years of piloting for the Imperial Navy had finally came back to him.  The enemy A-wing soon thereafter lost control, and the systems within began to fail.  The explosion marked another kill that the pilot had somehow mustered up enough strength to achieve.

"Scratch that A-wing that I had a little problem with also," said Tomas, "This is odd...."

The veteran pilot fighter felt the same way.

"Keep that last fighter in your sights Tommy, because it looks like we've got more company," said Jaden, his previous thoughts in the battle now finally coming true.

"I completely forgot that Mon Cal had another squadron within its hanger," said Jaden, "I played that last one out completely against all things I should have already seen here."

"That last fighter is mine, and good thinking all around," said Tomas, in a very sarcastic tone.  Jaden bit his lip, taking it to the head, but noting that it wasn't meant to be serious at this point.  Just as he did, something else came into view that made the situation somewhat better.

"I'm reading two lancer frigates on a flight pattern for our position," said Jaden, "And it looks like they've got two flights of TIE fighters with them."

Jaden sighed, knowing that once more he had made a mistake that could end up causing the pilots their simulated lives.

"Where the hell did those come from?" said Tomas, coming to the same state of disbelief as his Viper counter-part.

"I don't know, but lets hope they can help us out here!"

Another random situation to set off this already insane battle...

Tomas let out a sigh as of relief as Jaden informed him of the new arrivals. They weren't out of the hot water, not by a long shot but reinforcements were always happy to have when they came by. Seems something buried in the simulation decided that the High Command, or whoever it is in charge was being a little to hard on us. Tomas thought with a grin.

Reinforcements or not, they were a bit of a ways off and would take some time to get in range to do any good. Tomas hoped they'd arrive before this squadron of approaching A-wings, but he couldn't count on it. In fact, part of him was waiting for the guy in charge to realize what the simulator had done and do whatever it is he had to in order to vaporize the backup instantly. It didn't happen, but it made Tomas smile to think about such a thing happening and in such a dark, backs to the wall time he'd take any good feelings he could get.

The other concern that came to mind was the current flight engaged with the two Viper pilots. The first three A-wings, albeit smart could hardly be considered elite and especially not some higher up popping in to have some fun. Someone had to have instructed them to stick back and carry out the tactic they had. For Tomas, all those signs pointed to the A-wing now currently dead ahead and in his sights. Either that, or he had been one of those fighters and the officer had gotten a bit rusty after being behind a desk for so long.

As the A-wing managed to allude Tomas' fire and break out of his targets, Tomas was willing to bet this was the man. Masterfully, the opposing fighter danced somehow coming close to, but staying out of Tomas' fire.

Then it happened, the squadron of A-wings, as well as the TIE reinforcements converged on their position simultaneously. The remaining fighter from before managed to slip away amongst the fray, much to Tomas' dismay. Really would've liked to take him down ... I had him ... damnit. Tomas could only hope he lasted long enough to get another shot.

Finally, someone else to deal with the shit we're getting handed here...

Jaden watched in joy as the TIE fighters began to eliminate part of the A-wings on the playing field.  The lancer frigates, armed completely for anti-fighter support, we're now coming into play.  The lead lancer-class frigate had been named Gun it, and the slowly trailing counter-part to that was quizzically named Run it.  The lead was acting as a firefight beginner, its AG-2G quad laser cannons completely obliterating the A-wing squadron fighter support, while the one at the rear seemed to have been equipped with 20 different concussion missile launching tubes, each with a payload of 20 missiles per.  It would somehow be used against the Light Mon Calamari Cruiser, Persistence of Time.  Jaden knew they would each clear out most of the attackers in the current field of battle, but the thought of what would happen next always came back to his mind.

What's gunna happen next?

Jaden threw the fighter into a number of rolls, coming up on different A-wings, attempting to get a shot at them.  His efforts were nearly taken away at every chance to get a kill due to the fact that the Gun It was wiping out the entire fighter support, this same thing occurring with the Commanding Officer of the squadron, Tomas Dagoram.

"Holy shit!" yelled Jaden, "There's 3 A-wings left and they're all heading back to the Mon Cal!"

"And those TIE's are chasing them down..." said Tomas, "How thoughtful of them!"

Jaden laughed in amazement as the Gun It and Run It, respectively, moved in on the Persistence of Time.  Warheads rang out through the blackness of space from the Run It as it moved into a good firing position, while the Gun It moved in to suppress the rebellion cruisers shields.

"They sure are putting on quite a show," said Tomas, "Our next goal is going to have to do with them some how, I already know it."

Within seconds, the lancer-class frigates threw the Light Mon Calamari Cruiser into the depth of space, it's explosion nearly rocking the fighter pilots out of their seats.  The Viper Squadron pilots moved into formation with the frigates as the make shift TIE squadron also took up the escort.

What is really gunna happen next?

Booyah. Tomas thought as the reinforcements ripped through opposing A-wings. Alright, let's see what else to these guys. Tomas suddenly brightened up as he realized the High Command fighter was likely one of the three remaining fighters that had been retreating to the Mon Cal cruiser. With it now destroyed in balls of fire, they had moved on and were making a break for the outer ring of Republic capital ships. Not on my watch.

"Viper Seven, on me. Let's see if we can't teach catch these guys. You know you wanna get some payback on the High Command guy or whoever it is piloting that fighter for putting us through all this." If he's feeling anything like I am at the moment, there's no doubt in my mind what his answer will be...

"Hells yeah," Jaden replied through the comm. as the two Vipers broke off after their prey, bringing a pair of the reinforcement TIEs with them for backup. "What's the deal? Don't trust our abilities?" Jaden commented upon noticing them.

"Pfft, no Viper Seven. They're for support with those extra two A-wings. I don't know about you but I'm getting downright sick of destroying these computer simulated piles of bantha fodder.

“Amen to that Tommy,” Jaden replied with a chuckle. The four fighters raced off through the depth of space.  Slowly they gained on the trio of Rebels, Tomas just hoped they could catch them  before they got to close to the surrounding capital ships of the New Republic.

Jaden split the Interceptors shields thinly all across the fighter, what he had of them at least.  They had been recharging for some time, and it wouldn't be long before their full potential was regained.

Tomas recent chain of ideas through the veteran pilot off guard.  He hadn't thought about the fact that the lead A-wing that had escaped their clutches earlier could have very well been the leader of the simulation, but now he could finally see through the squadrons commanding officer's eyes.  He was probably correct in his assumptions, and Jaden wasn't afraid at all to go with whatever he had in mind.  It had worked before.

This guy is just as crazy as I am, so I'll do whatever it takes...As long as we make it out of this thing together as one.  Either when we go down it be together, or succeed and make it through together.  Whatever happens, I'm here to kick it till the end...

If we can pull it off....

Jaden threw the fighter into another barrel roll, coming up onto Tomas' starboard side.  He liked this area while flying with the Chief Warrant Officer, because it usually seemed to work out for both of them.  Jaden had a weak left side of attack, and Tomas had a weak right side, from what the Second Lieutenant had observed thus far.  They needed to do whatever it would take to make sure the A-wings in their sights were brought down, and hopefully the assistance of the subliminal TIE fighters would bring them the littlest bit of help they would need to achieve such a feat.

"Tommy, are you ready for this?" questioned the now overly seasoned pilot.  "Are you ready to destroy the opposition and rise to be the victors of this impossibly planned out simulation?"

"As damn well ready that I'll ever be at this point.  Wait, what the hell are you talking about?"

Jaden paused to reply for a moment, then went with the flow.

"Hell, I don't even know!"

Haha, I think my buddy Jaden here has gone mad. Hey, what the hell it feels like we've spent hours in this simulation, I'm feeling a bit nutty too. I mean I must be suggesting to chase three scared A-wings back to their main fleet. Tomas thought with a wild grin on his face. That's right you High Command guy, I got you a scared sissy!!! Shit, I think I just lost feeling in my rear end. Tomas sighed, they had been in this simulator way, way too long. The only thing keeping him from Kamikazeing the nearest capital ship was a strange desire of revenge on the guy in charge for putting them through this ridiculous mission.

The squadron commander watched as Jaden formed up directly to his right. The two pilots were in this together to the end now, whatever their individual fates might turn out to be. Tomas knew full well that there would've been no way for him to survive this long without the assistance of his squadronmates and Jaden in particular for this past stretch of combat. Sure his plans had had the tendency to backfire and cause only more trouble for the pair, but hey he was taking initiative and think outside the box. Tomas liked and admired that, given he was generally unable to do the latter himself for the most part. This crazy scheme was a rare exception. The guy in command must've gotten bored just watching the action and decided to jump in himself. Maybe if we knock him out, he'll decide we can all go back to reality.

Whether or not it worked, Tomas was seeing it though. With a battle cry the chase continued...

Well...this simulation really is getting us somewhere.  I've made about...thirty or more virtual kills, and I think I may have actually gained a little experience here!  We've made it out of situations that are literally impossible to make it out of, we've danced with death more times than I could ever imagine, and yet, we're still in this simulation, chasing these pix elated A-wings down, in hopes that the person commanding this thing is actually controlling one of them.

Even if we destroy it, what the hell is going to happen?  Are we going to win?

Jaden bore down on the A-wing that had just come into his firing range.  His cannons did better at a linked fire, their radius more spread out, thus, giving him a better chance at taking down the enemies shields faster.  Time after time of pulling the trigger and holding his aiming reticule steady, finally brought the enemy A-wing down.  Though it wasn't the lead fighter, Jaden felt as though he had accomplished yet another impossible task.

Defeating the enemy before him.

"Bring yourself back around into formation with me," said Jaden, coaxing Tomas, "These A-wings could prove to be more than meets the eye."

"More than meets the eye?" replied Tomas, "What are you talking about?"

"Well, since you didn't kill off one of the fighters, I thought I should say something witty to throw off you're little roll you had going there," said Jaden, "Did it work?"

Tomas could be heard laughing through the Com frequency.  Jaden let out a little chuckle, knowing that the man was near insanity at this point, as was he.

"It sure did work," said Tomas, "Now, lets take care of these fighters and get back to work."

"Work?" replied Jaden, "You mean flying around randomly trying to kill every fighter in sight, while we wait for our comrades to be destroyed by some figment of our imaginations?"

"Exactly," replied Tomas.

Oh yes...the time has come for all to bow down.  We will prevail!

Tomas laughed at their further plunge into insanity. First it had been the adrenaline of such a long simulation making him question the physical ramifications of such an adventure, now it was the mental health such a lengthy endeavor would have on them that made Tomas wonder why they were going through all this.

Jaden had destroyed one fighter already, as the flight caught up to the fleeing Rebel fighters. Tomas wasn't having quite so much, hammering his trigger repeatedly until it had nearly drained. Damn he's slippery. Tomas had just rolled to take a chance at a second angle when something shot from the back of the lead A-wing. Tomas watched as it took out the viewport of the first simulated TIE. A second and third popped out taking out the second crippling its wing and sending it into a death spin.

“What the Frak was that!?!” Tomas exclaimed, truly unsure of what he had just witnessed.

“Countermeasure, I guess. I've seen them take out warheads in my years of service, but to do it to entire fighters. This guy knows what he's doing. Stay awake over their, Tommy.” Jaden replied. Leave it to the veteran to know everything. Seriously, is there anything this guy isn't good for?

“Screw it, Jay. I'm taking out his support fighter, watch my back. Not even he can outlast the two of us ... I hope ...” Tomas informed his wingmate as he shifted his trajectory to attempt a shot at the second A-wing.

Jaden watched in horror as one of their supporting fighters, the TIE from the Gun It, was completely obliterated by the enemy A-wings countermeasures.

I haven't seen that done in years....which means that it must be him.

Jaden laughed evilly as his wingman began to make a move on the other supporting A-wing.  It wasn't long before the two were entwined in each others manuevers.  Jaden watched intently as the fighters wrapped around each other, their shots going in each and every direction.  The two fighter pilots were matching each others speeds almost instantly out of their manuevers; it looked as if it was a cat and mouse engagement.

"Come on Tommy, take him out!" yelled Jaden, giving his wingman the hype boost that he hoped would help him eliminate the enemy A-wing.

Jaden looked before him.  The lead A-wing was starting to drift out of his line of sight, and he could do nothing but watch Tomas in his valiant efforts against his currently targeted A-wing.  His attention span was beginning to get away from him, which only meant that his survival within the simulation wouldn't last much longer.

So Jaden's surprise, the other assisting TIE fighter managed to keep on track with the lead A-wing, popping off shots at its aft shields, while rolling around in attempts to make sure the fighter didn't come back around on it.

Thats one hell of an attempt made by a computer controlled fighter.

Come on man!  Get 'em!
thought Jaden as he watched the artificially controlled fighter attempt to take down the lead A-wing.

His hopes and dreams were shattered before him as the A-wing seemed to loop around faster than the speed of light, right onto the supporting TIE fighters aft.  The red bolts caught the fighter off guard, tearing through the hexagonal panels that kept the fighter stabilized.  Within seconds the eyeball erupted into flames, and began twirling off into the depths of space.

Jaden looked over to see that Tomas had finished off his A-wing, and was now coming back into formation.

"We can't let him get away, he just took out our last support," said Jaden, "Bear down! Get him!"

Tomas laughed into the microphone, his chuckles coming through the com frequency ever so clearly.

"Bring it on buddy," said Tomas, "I'm ready for you this time."

Oh here we go!

Tomas twisted and turned with the support fighter. Human controlled or not, the fighter was being incredibly stubborn. Perhaps it was fatigue of such a long simulation, perhaps it was just skills of the fighter, either way it simply refused to go away.

“Come on Tommy, take him out!" Jaden called out through the the comm. yet again in an attempt to encourage his wingmate in the late stages of the the battle. At this point things like that that could only help with the morale of the pilots rather than hurt. It had its desired effect, as Tomas banked sharply and popped off a few shots that lowered his target's shields before it got away yet again. Curse you, damn Rebel. Just die already!

Although he hadn't destroyed it, the damage had thrown the computer off its game and opened the fighter up to Tomas' next maneuver. With a twist, Tomas came up from under the A-wing and blasted to pieces with a hoot.

Tomas once again reformed with Jaden following the destruction of the second to last Rebel fighter. His eyes zeroed in on the remaining enemy craft and for a brief moment his surroundings were completely forgotten.

You are SO mine. No squadron of A-wings to save you now are there? Tomas knew his emotions and desire to kill off this member of High Command or whoever it was at the 'stick were teetering on overboard, but he really didn't care. This had become his goal of the entire simulation, and he was sure as hell going to see it through.

The skirmish with the support A-wing had allowed the lead fighter to regain a bit of distance from the hunting TIEs. The attack, albeit brief by one of the simulated TIEs had held him up slightly. Although the Imperial fighter was destroyed with ease, it had now limited the head start towards the outer rim of capital ships that the remaining A-wing was able to attain.

Dropping his shield to the aft of his craft, Tomas picked up his speed in pursuit. Beside him, Jaden did the same with surprising willingness. In any other situation, the squadron commander may have considered dropping his forward shields as well, but did not want to risk it after seeing what the High Command pilot had done to his flightmate. There was no way he was going out in that fashion, too.

“We're not going to make it Tommy,” Jaden pointed out with disappointment in his voice. “He's almost there.”

“Oh we're going to make it, just a little ... further ...” Tomas decided to go all in, dropping all shields for a couple moments to get an extra boost of speed. He watched as they drained and allowed him to come into range. “There!” Tomas unleashed bursts of fire, the first hitting the A-wings shields the second missing as it broke off its path to engage. Tomas had put power back into his shields almost immediately after getting in range and watched as they slowly rose once again. It was questionable whether the A-wing could've survived had it continued to flee, and apparently the pilot felt the same way as it positioned itself to finish the simulation with his own skill.

What followed was a dance the likes of which Tomas had not yet to encounter while flying as a pilot of the Vast Empire. It was instantly obvious that any prior reservations to the identity of the A-wing pilot were pointless, as the two fighters twisted and turned with one another. Tomas' shield drop had come so instantly and unexpected that it had left Jaden trailing for a few moments, though after a couple moments of a one on one dogfight, the fellow Viper joined the fray.

Thus far in the skirmish with the member of High Command, Tomas had decided it would've been questionable as to whether or not he would have succeeded at marking up the kill. Although it might not have seemed it to the unknowing observer, Tomas had basically been relegated to defense almost immediately after the A-wing came around to engage. He had to commend the pilot on his skill, as even as Jaden joined the fray the Rebel fighter still managed to evade the Viper pilots' target reticules. The momentum of the fight had switched to their favour as the Vipers had clearly moved on the offensive, but time after time they would set each other up for a chance only to have their target masterfully escape their clutches.

“Gotta admit Jay, this old fogey's still got some chops.” Tomas commented, making a crack at the A-wing pilot. I wonder if he'll be watching this later and hear that?

“Hey now Tommy, he could very well be right around my age. That hurts you know.”

“Your point?” Tomas replied with a simple chuckle.

Tomas was somewhat shocked how long this dogfight had been lasting without producing a casualty. Given the length of time the trio had been in the simulator and the skill level they each possessed he figured one of them would have possibly slipped up by now which would result in their immediate departure.

“He's yours Jay,” Tomas said over the comm. He had just performed another maneuver forcing the A-wing to change direction. It was a predicted direction caused by the move, and Jaden had performed similarly in attempt to get a direct shot at the elusive foe.

“Damn it. He slipped through again ... How the Frak does he keep doing that?” Jaden cried with a sense of exasperation in his voice. “Hold on Tommy, I'll direct him your direction. Damn, damn, damn ... that was my best opportunity I've had yet, too.” Once again, Jaden fired shots at the A-wing. They had no chance at hitting their target, but they served their purpose to herd the Rebel fighter where he wanted it to go. The dogfight for all intensive purposes had become a stalemate, neither side offering themselves up for the kill.

“Copy that,” Tomas replied. The way the A-wing was flying, the hunter had to be on his toes. It had managed to break containment on a few occasions thus far. On a couple of these the pilot had gotten a swing back in at the fighter bent on destroying it only to experience the same frustrating feeling of his prey slipping through the net.

Jade watched the enemy A-wing separate itself even further from the Viper Pilots' position.  He could have been able to do it the entire time, and now he was just toying with them.  Jaden had only hoped for the best outcome, and now his hopes had been shot down; the enemy A-wing had pulled a quick Immelman when the Viper Pilots had let their guard around, and was now coming on an immediate attack vector for Tomas, the lead fighter of Viper Squadron and thus, commanding officer.

"Good bye, Tomas," said a voice through the Com Frequency.

BLAST! It's Arturus!

"Tommy, thats fraking Art!" said Jaden, his thoughts all coming together now.  His fighter gained a little more speed, he wouldn't let the man take out his commanding officer and friend, it wouldn't happen.

Did you think about this happening, Arturus?

Jaden inserted his fighter straight into the A-wings flight path, taking nearly all the shots he had sent straight for Tomas.  The red bolts pierced through his shields, some absorbing, some not.  The two fighters nearly collided, throwing Arturus into a tailspin, and Jaden into even worse.

"Systems failing, he hit my hull pretty hard," said Jaden, letting Tomas know that he was done.

"I can't pull out of this one buddy," said Jaden, nearly coming to tears.  "Best of luck."

Tomas watched as the Interceptor drifted off, whilst spinning in the circle of fire it was becoming.  Jaden's radar blip sizzled out.  He was done, it was over.

"It was good flying man, see you in a little bit."

Tomas let out a sigh, it was now only him, and the member of the Naval High Command.  Mono e Mono.  He would have to push himself to the limits to make sure his mission outcome was successful.

And the A-wing had already started its recovery from the last fault.

Go get 'em Tommy

Shit, it's Arturus, Tomas thought as he watched Jaden's fighter vanish in flames. You are SO mine. I've got you Tomas' reserves were kicked into high gear, his nerves tightening up as the young squadron commander focused all his energy on finishing what he had come to do. With Jaden, the two fighters had pursued Arturus several clicks and now the only thing on Tomas' mind was revenge.

Arturus took the moment of opportunity provided by Tomas' brief shock that his wingmate was out of the game to move into strike the remaining Viper. The squadron commander had to do something ... fast, if he wanted to have any satisfaction out of this simulation. Hands constantly moving, Tomas did all he can to shake the Lieutenant Commander, cutting throttle and looping around. Throwing in a barrel roll, the lone Viper was pulling out all the stops to stay alive.

Arturus's voice had sent shivers down Tomas' spine and the feeling worsened as he fought for his simulator life. Then it happened ... Tomas broke sharply and unexpected and kicked his fighter into high gear. Meanwhile, the Lieutenant Commander underpursued the turn and with a vertical loop Arturus now found the squadron commander breathing down his neck.

How do ya like me now!?!? Tomas thought harshly, hammering his lasers into the A-wing's shields. Arturus managed to evade just before his shields were completely shot, but was unable to shake off his pursuer completely. [i]It's going to take more than that, sir.[i] Tomas continued hammering watch with complete and utter satisfaction as the A-wing broke apart piece by piece.

The veteran pilot smiled. Tomas had been in the simulation for hours now, and the stress was beginning to take its toll. He was entirely focused on the three A-Wings, which had been the older pilot's intention all along. Bringing Arturus along worked perfectly. As soon as Art had finished off Jaden, Tomas had taken the bait.

Too bad for you, Rear Admiral Riel Fury thought with a smile.

Tomas and Jaden's intense focus on Arturus and the other A-Wings had bought Riel enough time to sneak his figher into the fray. He wanted this to be a "fair" fight, though, so he flipped a switch on his comm and hailed the Viper Squadron Commander.

"Hello, Tomas."

And then he opened fire.

*          *          *          *          *          *          *          *          *          *

"Hello, Tomas."

The voice froze Tomas's train of thought right on the tracks. No way. He thought Arturus had been the last line of defense, the final assault by whoever was running the simulation. But he had been wrong. Before he could respond, laser bolts began to slam into the back of his Interceptor.

Instinct kicked in and he juked out of the way right before the last of his shields failed. Looking down at his displays, he saw that a Z-95 Headhunter was right on his tail, blasting away. How the frak did Riel sneak up on me like that? Then realization dawned on him. He and Jaden had been so preoccupied with gunning down Arturus that he had stopped paying attention to the rest of the fight.

He flipped on his communicator. "Hello, Sir," he replied with a strained voice.

No reponse. Apparently the Rear Admiral wasn't feeling chatty. Fine by me, Tomas thought. He might have gotten the drop on me, but there's no way I'm letting a Z-95 Headhunter get the best of me.

Using his superior maneuverability, he brought his TIE Interceptor around in a complete 360-degree maneuver, expecting to face Riel's Z-95 head on. But there was no one there. What?

Riel had brought his Z-95 to a screaming halt just beforehand, and was sitting calmly in the space right behind Tomas. He opened fire with his lasers, tearing Tomas's fighter to pieces. The Chief Warrant Officer tried to juke away, but Riel didn't have to worry about pursuing him. Because he wasn't moving, it a simple matter or adjusting his fighters yaw and keeping a bead on Tomas.

I can't believe this is happening, Tomas thought. He madly began flipping switches, trying to boost power to his shields, not even realizing his shield has already failed. A second later the simulation went dark, and it was finally all over.

*          *          *          *          *          *          *          *          *          *

Tomas sat in the simulator a long, long time before he dared emerge. When he finally exited, Riel Fury was waiting there to greet him.

"Tomas."

Hastily, Tomas threw up a salute. "Sir!"

Riel just stared at him. There was a long pause before the admiral returned the salute. "You flew exceptionally well, Tomas."

"Thank ... thank you, sir."

"And you feel cheated."

The Viper Squadron Commander said nothing. Of course I do...

"You became preoccupied with gunning down Arturus, with getting revenge for Jaden. If this had been a real simulation, anyone could've snuck up on you and gunned you down, not just me. On top of that, you underestimated by skills because you were in a superior fighter. Do you honestly think that a TIE Interceptor gives you an easy win over another pilot just because he's in an old piece of junk?" Riel paused, a slight smile creeping onto his face. "You have to keep a clear mind at all times, no matter what."

"But, sir -"

"-no matter what, Tomas." The smile on Riel's face was gone as quickly as it had come. "Do you understand?"

The Chief Warrant Officer nodded. Arguing about it isn't going to do me any good. I guess he's right...

"There's still a lot you have to learn if you're going to command Viper Squadron, but this was a good first step. Be proud of what you accomplished here, okay?"

"Yes, sir."

"Now, head on down to the debriefing room. The rest of your squadron is already there, waiting for you, as well as the Atrus's new captain."

New captain? Well, guess I'll see who it is soon enough. Bracing himself, Tomas walked out, trying to feel proud of what he had accomplished, rather than frustrated by his defeat.

*          *          *          *          *          *          *          *          *          *

Riel sighed. He didn't need his ... special gift ... to sense Tomas's frustration. But his statements had been honest - there was still much the younger man had to learn if he was going to effectively lead Viper Squadron in a real battle.

Well, hopefully he's learned something from this.

Whistling a happy little tune, the Rear Admiral followed Tomas down toward the debriefing room, where there were several imporant announcements to be made.
