I suppose Canada is good. From what I hear you inherited good french customs like very little litter on the streets and low overall crime rate. And compared to your next door neighbours, you are saints! My only beef with you is that you couldnt have come up with another name rather than Canada Day?

Im from the Republic and RJ,I know your probably an NI protestant(i dont want to start an argument)but that doesnt mean that you cant follow St Paddies day.And anyway you have July 12.I think that because Canada is such a new county,it doesnt have a good name for its national holiday.I think that if Canada ever gets full independence from Britain, the name will stay as canada day until the day that the first Prime Minister of completley new and independent Canada dies, and then they'll just rename Canada day after him. And,on Paddies Day,Jag,most people dont get drunk in Ireland, actually!

I could follow St Paddies Day but I choose not to. Although you are from the Republic, that doesn't mean you can't support July 12th. Do you? ----------------------- ASL/SGT AlanRJ/3SQD/2PLT/1COM/1RGT/1BAT/Tadath/VEA [ES2]

First of all, on the issue of the name "Canada Day", while perhaps not as forceful sounding as "Independence Day", it is a title that states what the holiday is. The holiday is to celebrate Canada. The date, July 1st, is the date when confederation occurred between the provinces of Upper and Lower Canada (Ontario and Quebec), New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia in 1867 thus bringing into existence the Dominion of Canada. I suppose we could call it Confederation Day but really, who cares about the name of the day? It is the meaning that counts in the end.
Now about Canada's independence from Britain. Aside from the fact that we share the same head of state (Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II), Canada is a completely independent country. Unlike in 1914 when WWI began, Canada no longer takes any instruction on domestic or foreign affairs from Britain. I would point you to the three key post-1867 dates in the history of Canada's evolution. The Balfour Declaration of 1926 stated that the United Kingdom and all of the Dominions (Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, Newfoundland, and South Africa) are equal in the British Empire. This was a significant granting of independence as Canada and the other Dominions were completely independent and on equal standing with the UK while remaining in the broader British Empire (and now the Commonwealth).
The next important step was in 1931 with the Statute of Westminster which put the Balfour Declaration into law thus giving all of the above complete legislative independence from Britain. Canada and the others were completely free to make their own decisions, including on issues of foreign policy. In 1914, when Britain went to war, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, etc. were automatically at war as well. Come 1939, each country had to make the decision independently and there was, at least in Canada, strong, but not majority support, for staying out of the war which Canada had the right to do. Therefore, at this point, Canada was a completely independent country though it shared the same overall head of state (which, despite my love for the monarchy, is little more than ceremonial).
Finally, the repatriation of the constitution in 1982 by Prime Minister Pierre Elliot Trudeau marked the last of the series of evolutions that really demonstrated and affirmed that fact that Canada is an independent country. In addition to bringing the constitution home to Canada and the passing of the Constitution Act of 1982 (which kept almost all of the 1867 British North America Act as the provinces refused to agree to their jurisdiction over certain affairs being altered, and added the Charter of Rights and Freedoms) also put into existence our own twist on the old British parliamentary system.
Therefore, when you say Canada isn't fully independent, I have to wonder what exactly you are talking about. ----------------------- SCAP, WADJ/LCM Corran "Arturus" Hargraves/STCR Doashim/1Flt/VE/VEN/(=A=)(=SA=)(=*MA*=)(=JCPA=)(=SCPA=)[MC:1](x3)[SV][BRC][VC:S][CBV][LoM](x2)[LSM][LoR][BWC][SWC][GWC][LoC-DD][CM-PL]
