I wanted to post this under another thread (For Kami) first but then I realised I'd go terribly offtopic. So here it goes.
What's this CS craze all about... I can't understand it. Of course, one or two rounds of CS on a Lan Party with some friends are nice, but on the Internet. No... Well I generally don't like playing on the Internet that much, but that's because I don't like how people act there.
Back to CS. I think it'overrated. It is not that realistic (for realism play Firearms or The Trenches) and personally I don't think it has style (for style play The Specialists).
Let me give you one example of Gameplay for CS, one for
The Trenches, and one for The Specialists.
Counterstrike:
Map:CS Assault
Players:8
Skill:Normal (not Überl337pwnage or what you call it and not n00b. Just Langamers.)
Everyone buys an Assault Rifle and a Deagle and there we go. The CT's do the classic Attack, trying to rush the T's from both sides. The T's camp inside, waiting for the CT's to enter the building. CT's enter, crouch, some bursts are fired, some people on both sides killed and in the end we will have one winning fraction. Repeat this 30 minutes for a normal length. It get's boring after a while.
The Trenches:
Map:don't remember the name, it's basically two trenches facing each other with a cratered battlefield in the Middle.
Players:8
Skill:Normal
You choose your class and start with a fitting loadout (WWI themed so don't expect automatic weapons. Only rifles, and stuff. I don't go into details here :-D) then you rush out, to reach one of the forward craters. You spot an enemy who tries to do the same. After going prone you acquire target and shoot. After each shot you have to operate the bolt manually by pressing the right mousebutton, which leads to strategical firing. The final objective is to reach the enemy trench with enough people. So you slowly fight your way forward. Here, one round often takes 30 minutes but doesn't get boring as it is really atmospheric (ever tried aiming while artillery was shaking the ground?).
The Specialists
Map:TS_Lobby (yup, THE Lobby from Matrix complete with destroyable pillars, helicopter on the roof and such sweet stuff.)
Players:8
Skill:Normal
You pick your loadout keeping three things in mind: Personal Skill, Style, and Weight.
Concerning Personal Skill: Everyone has his weapon that he is best with ^^
Concerning Style: In a game focusing on cool movie fights where a lot of people are wielding Pistols, it's not so cool to sport an M4A1 or even M60 (looks a bit... frightened i think).
Concerning Weight: Each weapon you carry takes up slots. The more slots you use, the less stunts you can perform.
Stunts Include: Shootdodges, Summersaults, Walljumps and a lot more. No Problem you think, I don't need many Stunts when I got a big beefy automatic rifle to kick ass. You're wrong. If you frag an enemy while performing a stunt it gives you extra points (e.g.: Fragging an enemy while you are being in the Air brings you three frags instead of one while on the ground.) So you see, stunts enable you to get a lot of points.
And now we come to my favourite subject, Pickups. Pickups include a lot of things like health, armour but also two things that need a closer look: Slow Motion and Slow Pause.
Slow Motion slows the game down around you only slightly but enough to help you aim. It doesn't work only for you, but also for other people next to you (don't ask me how it works exactly though). You get one second of Slow Motion per frag or five if you find the corresponding pickup.
Slow Pause works similar but slows the game even more. Also it makes those nifty Matrix bullettrails appear. Slow Pause can only be acquired by picking up it's Item and only works for 3 seconds.
So now when you know all this (If you've really taken time to read through all this: WOW ^^) I'll give you an example.
You are on the rooftop of the building in which the lobby is. You dive through one of the rofflights, enable slow motion and kill three people with your Revolver. Then you run down the stairs and enter the lobby from the side of the elevators. You spot an enemy, dodge forward again, activating Slow Mowtion once more. You fire but he performs the neo like lean backward move (yes you can do this too ^^ but it requires luck and timing) to dodge all your five bullets. Deciding that the time is too short to reload you throw away your weapon and try to engage him in close combat with kung fu moves. Bad luck... he was sporting a double barreled shotgun and frags you. You wait to respawn, have the chance to reconfigure your equipment and are back in the action.
Now that's what I call fun. Sure, not much tactics or teamplay, but it makes you feel like you are playing a movie.
So far...

P.s.:Sorry for stealing your precious time
