May Basket Day is the where you put candy in a "basket" or cups and leave it anonomously at the front door of your neighbors. You ring the door bell and run away, but traditionally if the person catches you, they have to kiss you, but that isn't practiced very much. We have a neighborhood filled with kids so our door has been ringing all day.

Unlike the rest of trhe civilized world, the US doesn't recognize May Day, mostly because we are: a) run by people who suppress the voices of the common man, and b) the average American common man is angry, well-armed, and prone to violent, bigoted groupthink.

Therefore, all the nice basket and other fun aspects of the day are the baby thrown out with the bathwater.

Happy May Day!

We sadly don't have May Day in Canada either.  However, a little later in the month we get a day off for Victoria Day (named after Queen Victoria for those who don't need the history of the British monarchs.

I know who Victoria was. They named the era of the mid-1800's to the early-1900's after her. She was also a personal friend of President James Buchanan (he was just before Lincoln. No, he did NOT start the Civil War, and he was NOT gay, despite what the revisionist idiots claim). I give tours at Buchanan's home in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and we have portraits of Victoria and Prince Albert in the parlor.

Well you have Labour Day, how is that much different?  It is still a day off for labour, just a national one instead of the international one.

It is an iowan thing actually...  Or atleast we're the only ones brave enough to do so.  The public is pretty well involved, but I forgot all about it and was actually thinking it was on April 1st for a while and that the event had disappeared.

You know, maybe you guys can tell me why when I look at my birthday on the callender, it says 'Boxing Day'.  A canadian holiday supposebly, but I seriously have no idea what the hell it is.  Any insight would be nice...

It's the day when most boxes are made.
Kidding.
It's the historical day when boxes starting fighting, giving birth to boxing.
Joking.
I have no clue to what the hell Boxing Day is.
Correct!!

It is a British holiday, which, like many other customs, spread to Canada.  The day after Christmas, historically, the Brits would box up food and other items for the poor.  At least that is my understanding of it's historical background, I am sure the Brits in VE will correct me if I am mistaken.

That's Cinco de Mayo foo.

Which, given the current political climate, should be more of a big thing in the US as it signified a Mexican army of 4000 kicking the pants off of an elite French force of 8000; an army which would have been capable of assisting the Confederacy during the Civil War.

So yeah, consider that as you swill your crappy Coronas and cheap tequila.
