Temperature is considered the rate at which molecules vibrate. Higher vibration=higher temp. And while noone has ever gotten to 0 kelvin (the point at which all motion stops completely), some scientists came extremely close. The used lasers to trap some molecules, and I think gotten to a little less than 1 kelvin...

But we're getting off topic...

Off topic is always good when it involves physics!!

As chip stated we have reached very low temperatures. the process involves shining lasers from all different directions at a group of atoms.  if the atoms move in any direction they will be hit by more photons from one direction than the other (kind of like the doppler effect with sound)
It's possible to get down to something like a billionth of a kelvin using this and the nobel prize for physics was won for this in 1997.

have a look at this site for some info:
http://www.colorado.edu/physics/2000/bec/

Also due to quantum mechanics we can never really get complete 0k, thats like trying to reach the speed of light. Its because of heisenberg uncertainty.

While we're on physics didnt someone go and say centrifugal force doesnt exist a while ago?

Also an amusing note:
in "Chronicles of Riddick" they say that the planet goes down to -300 degrees C, which of course with middle school education some of you have pointed out doesnt even exist lol

There are various spellings, including "centrifugul" and "centrivigul." Sometimes "motion" is even used in place of "force." All are wrong. Such a a spelling does not exist. It is, in fact, "centripital force. Why the hell people can never get that right is beyond me. That was always my physics teacher's pet peeve, so he drilled that into us pretty hard.

actually you'd be wrong there.

Centripedal force is the force is the force towards the centre of rotation. e.g. on a swing, it pushes against your arse accelerating you towards the middle.

Centrifugal force is indeed a fictional force, however when you start to use inertial reference frames centrifugal and coriolis forces have to be considered. Coriolis force is what makes storms spin a certain way depending on which hemisphere you are in (another common myth that water goes down the plug hole depending on what hemisphere you are in is absolute rubbish.) Centrifugal force is the force outwards away from the centre of rotation, like when you are thrown to the side of a car when it corners.

For high school education, yes centrifugal force is considered fictional, but it does actually exist. It's what makes a centrifuge work, not centripedal force

(I'm not the best at explaining things, but i can always get my astrophysics professor to give me a better explanation if anyone wants)

As per usual hyperphysics has the answers:
http://hyperphysics.phy-astr.gsu.edu/hbase/hframe.html
goto "mechanics" - "circular motion" - "centrifugal force"

by the way this is an excellent site covering a wide range of topics

Isn't centrifugal force the opposite of centripetal force?

Though the actual force applied is centripetal force, an equal an opposite reaction occurs (by Newton's laws of motion), and this is described as centrifugal force.

When a car turns sharply, you do not actually move outwards in the car, you are stationary (or continuing in a straight line if the car was moving), and the car moves under you until it presses against you - when it has moved such that it's side is pressing you in and forcing you to adopt its acceleration since you can't actually pass through the door and out of the car :P

I could be wrong.

The things is the laws of physics should be the same no matter which reference frame you are in.

So if you are in the middle of a circle, spinning round then the laws of physics should apply from your point of view.

So in this frame a car going round a roundabout may appear stationary, but things within it are moving away from you, so there has to be a force pulling them outwards.

They are moving away - in a straight line until centripetal force acts to change their velocity pulling them around in the circle.

Wait a minute here. You lost me (though that may be due to my massive headache and puking. Gotta hate the flu...).

Cenrtipital force is the force required to keep an object spinning in a circle instead of continuing in a straight line. For example, if I'm spinning a ball on a string over my head. The ball naturally wants to just fly away in a straight line. I have to pull a certain amount on the string inorder to change the ball's flight and make it turn. The amount I have to pull is the centripital force.

No. The centripetal force is the force of the string pulling the ball in. It will not be precisely the force you apply to the string due to elasticity.

I was told by my Physics teacher that centripetal force is actually an illusion, caused by the inertia of the object.

ok to try and make it clear:
Newtons Law:
Every object moves at constant velocity unless some force acts to change this.

What your physics teacher told you is crap Jmac, he must have meant centrifugal force, but even then he wouldnt be 100% correct.
Centripetal force is a definate force. it is the force you exert on an object to make it move in a circle. For an object to move in a circle it is accelerated towards the centre at a rate of a=(v^2)/r
Centripetal force is defined as the force that is exerted on an object towards the centre of rotation to keep it in an orbit etc.

Centrifugal force is defined as a fictional force. However, despite what high school teachers say to the contrary it does in fact exist. To be fair you may as well accept that it does not exist if you are not carrying on your education in science. However you must take into account the following:

For the laws of physics to be correct they muct apply no matter which reference frame you look at things from. so to take the descrition from hyper physics:

"Whereas the centripetal force is seen as a force which must be applied by an external agent to force an object to move in a curved path, the centrifugal and coriolis forces are "effective forces" which are invoked to explain the behavior of objects from a frame of reference which is rotating.

The driver of a car on a curve is in a rotating reference frame and he could invoke a "centrifugal" force to explain why his coffee cup and the carton of eggs he has on the seat beside him tend to slide sideways. The friction of the seat or dashboard may not be sufficient to accelerate these objects in the curved path.

A person in a hovering helicopter above the car could describe the movement of the cup and the egg carton as just going straight while the car travels in a curved path.

The centrifugal force is a useful concept when the most convenient reference frame is one which is moving in a curved path, and therefore experiencing a centripetal acceleration. Since the car above will be experiencing a centripetal acceleration v2/r, then an object of mass m on the seat will require a force mv2/r toward the center of the circle to stay at the same spot on the seat. From the reference frame of a person in the car, there seems to be an outward centrifugal force mv2/r acting to move the mass radially outward. In practical descriptive terms, you would say that your carton of eggs is more likely to slide outward if you have a higher speed around the curve (the velocity squared factor) and more likely to slide outward if you go around a sharper curve ( the inverse dependence upon r).

To be honest you may as well go on saying that centrifugal forces don't exist, it'll hurt your head less if you dont do anything physics based. To truly explain everything from every possible reference frame you have to use Relativity, which is a tricky concept. (I've done special relativity, but i wont do general relativity for a long time)

Although if anyone's interested i can give a brief summary of what happens to things that are close to the speed of light?

Ah yes, I know some about relativity. The faster you move, the more time slows. And there's also the part about how you can't tell you're moving unless you see something else that is not moving at the same rate. We actually learned that I think in elementary school. The teacher showed us a film on one of those antique movie projector things.

Here's something I threw together. It doesn't use much in the way of clever physics, but it makes sense to me :P

...and doesn't need Einstein.

As you can see, 'centrifugal force' is an effect of centripetal force not being strong enough to accelerate the object in a circle, hence the object follows its tendency to continue in a straight line and appears to move away, even with your reference fixed on the object.

This is just like an old science book. Without inertia, a planet would go in a straight line forever, but thanks to gravity it doesn't.

Um, Jack? Wouldn't inertia make the planet want to drift away straight, and gravity acts as the centripital force that keeps it in orbit?

We've gone from heat-lightning to centripital force. might as well just start a physics thread.

the only way i see how wierdness can be related to physics is that the weak minded consider physics to be wierd because they can't understand it.

hahahaha you think there is no weirdness in physics? ah thats a good one.

Try some quantum mechanics

(by the way i dont think anyone has really got the idea behind the rotational reference frame argument, but i think i'll leave it be now)

Physics is one thing I was never able to comprehend in high school.  I barely understood a word of what you guys were saying.  Maybe that's why I failed that class...

Sorry to hear that, Slick. I don't have a good grasp on physics as well, that is, for now.
