I was wondering, any other military hardware enthusiasts here? Topic here is jet fighters. Maybe we can start a Fighter X vs Fighter Y debate here :P

My personal favourite would be the General Dynamics F-16 Falcon aka teh Viper.

The F-16 has a badass reputation. It is one of the most reliable, manoeuvrable and versatile military aircraft in the world.

Armed with AIM-9 Sidewinders, AIM-120 AMRAAM and AGM Mavericks, it is able to fulfill a host of tactical and strike roles, in addition to being an air superiority fighter, hence the designation Multi-role Combat Aircraft.

It is also the world's most prolific fighter, with over 2000 being exported to over 20 countries worldwide, including my own country, Singapore.

The F-16 is combat proven in world hotspots, such as Iraq, duh, and Yugoslavia, where it downed Mig-29s.

Shown below is a picture of a Republic of Singapore Air Force F-16D two-seater flying in the skies of Arizona, her home base is Luke AFB. She is part of the RSAF detachment there, probably flying as part of the Black Widows Squadron.

And here is one my fav pics.. USAF F-16Cs Wild Weasels.

I get an orgasm just looking at this pic. Watch reaaal close.

A-10 Warthog. Thing is awsome. Absolutely loaded with bombs, plus that Avenger cannon on the front. It doesn't fly to fast, and I doubt it would do crap in a dog fight, but when it comes to ground support those things make some of the best tank killers.

My specialty in military trivia is the American Civil War, but the whole topic in general is pretty cool.

Aye, the A-10 is an old beauty. 30 years of stalwart service and still going strong. It can dish out 10, yes 10, Maverick AGMs. Suh-weet.

And yeah, who can forget that 30mm cannon. 30mm?! Mama mia.

Shame it's being pushed out the limelight of it's tank-buster role by the Apache..

F-16 is a classic.

I like the F-18s too.

Here's some good info about the F-18 Hornet: F/A-18 Hornet

I love all those and I really like the VTOL aircraft. My newest favorite is the Lockheed Martin F-35.

I don't have any pictures but that is my utmost favorite. Second favorite is the A-10A I was hoping I could fly either that or the F-35 when I become a pilot after ROTC.

I also got to see the F-16 being built in the Lockheed Martin plant down in Fort Worth Texas. He is a security guard there and we got a personal tour in a golf cart.

Well, the F-35 is actually the marked replacement for the F-16s. It will even replace the A-10 in the ground attack role. I reckon we will be seeing the first operational F-35 JSF squadron somewhere round 2008 or later.

Oh, I also took the liberty of posting a couple of JSF pictures up for you, FK.

I'm a man of the classics.

F-86 Saber for looks.

A-10A for sheer ground stomping power.

SU-25(I get my russian designations and model numbers mixed up once in a while) Flanker for air supoirity.

Dogfighting is largly a thing of the past with the ever increasing range, speed, and manueverability of missles being a standoff kind of plane will be much more favorable then being in a dogfighter.  Though missles aren't perfect they are getting better all the time.

Keep the gun on an airplane, they tried to take it off in Vietnam and wound up putting it right back on.  Despite the ever increasing capabilities of missles having something to back them up for strafing runs and close combat is always good.

Looks like the A-10 is a hot favourite.

Classics eh? For me, an example of a perfect classical plane from the Vietnam era would be the Douglas A-4 Skyhawk.

It's a really beautiful plane but sadly, it is gradually being phased out of service by countries worldwide due to its age.

The Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) itself will replace our A-4S Super Skyhawks with next-generation fighters (NGF) like the Dassault Rafale, Eurofighter Typhoon or the F-15T.

Pity. Real pity. I've been a fervent admirer of the A-4 Skyhawk since forever.

RSAF A-4S Super Skyhawk

RSAF TA-4S (Trainer) Super Skyhawk.

And the JSF is cool because they're for the RAF and Royal Navy too

No one's mentioned blackbird yet?

SR-71 Blackbird is an interesting aircraft pretty much doomed by a changing world.

Fast, high flying, and now pretty much useless with the advent of spy satelites that can take pictures of your liscense plate from orbit.

The U-2 and unmanned aircraft still perform the mission the Blackbird was designed for when we need it but less and less pilots are being put at risk for something that satelites and unmanned aircraft can give us.  In my book, a good thing.

Currently for any branch of the military one out of every three designs submitted for the military to choose from must be unmanned.  At least that is the current regulation in the US.

The SR-71 Blackbird is another one of my favorites. I actually had one of those kits where you glued the jet's pieces together. Sweet looking jet.

Doesn't the Black Bird hold some kind of speed record, I remember that was always my favorite jet.  Something about when I got into the atmosphere it went way faster than it should have, stretched like 8 or 9 inches...  Dunno...  But It just looks kick ass...

Another good one would have to be F-117, it's the recognizable aircraft around.  Looks great in 80 movies..

I understand your problem Kuroishi.  I mix them up all the time.  The Flanker is the Su-27 and the Frogfoot - the Sovs answer to the A-10 - is the Su-25.

I have to agree with all the A-10 afficianados but want to add one quirky craft I always liked the looks of: the Saab Viggen. While old and pretty much out of date, its unusual looks have mostly reappeared in the newer Gripen, also made by Saab.
