Chipmunk Man sighed. This had been a very long week. Following the recent battle for some planet, there had been some major changes, both in the Navy and in his life. Viper had been decommissioned, its pilots placed in Kaph, and activity was still fairly low. Casualties from the battle had just been too high, and the Navy couldn't support so many squadrons. Chip was trying to recruit, but noone seemed to stay. He'd even tried to recruit his brother, Obelisk, but the pansy had gotten homesick and went AWOL. Hopefully his buddy ShadowDragon would have more balls than Ob&
Chip's elite pay had left with his squadron. Now how was he supposed to buy urinal cakes at the newly reopened Imperial Center? That extra 2,500 ICs a month had been pretty handy& But that had been nicely offset. Following the battle, Chip had gotten some promotions and a medal, plus command of a flight in Kaph. In fact, he was out on a training mission with that flight right now&
"Chatham, I want you on my starboard wing. Shazam, take port. I know you guys are tired, me too. But if we can get these formation moves right, I'll take you guys to the lounge and get you a drink. Alright, bank to port in 4& 3&. 2&"
"Holy shiznit, what the heck is that?!" Chatham was nearly plastered by a ship coming out of hyperspace. In fact, there were several ships coming out of hyperspace. And none looked especially friendly. They were almost like shuttles, but nothing Chip had ever seen.
"Alright boys, throttle up. I wanna get the Hell oughta here before the smack us. Chatham, back in formation." He switched comm channels. "Atrus, this is Kaph 3-1. I've got multiple inbound ships, unrecognized make or markings. Recommend immediate reinforcements, over."
"Kaph 3-1, Atrus. New ships have not identified themselves, appear to be going hostile."
"Aw, crap. Roger that. We're gonna need the rest of Kaph out here, ASAP. Shaz and Chath, we got work to do."

(I got a starviper!!!  Lol.  I'll be flying that this time.  Don't anyone damage it unless it's me!)

A wing of modified mini-transports left the hanger of a rather large ship, and zoomed out into all directions.
"Shazam, don't be a hero with those damned missles.  Wait till they're actually needed.  Chip, get ready to go in and out of the lines, don't expect to be too quick.  I'll loop while Shazam makes the first shot.  This is simple guys.  One Shazam is done, I take his place, we just move around a bit more than usual.  Let's do it!" He said and looped upwards as a series of rapid fire came their way.
One of the ships, a bit large, was using a ions.  "What the hell, Chip, that dudes using ions.  I bet he's got missles, what the hell is he doin using ions?"  Shazam blurted into the com just as he pulled the trigger.
Chip didn't answer for a moment, but he continued to loop, trying to position behind Shazam for the second attack.  "They must be pirates...  Damn.  We made a mistake calling in the rest of Kaph.  We gotta get our asses..." He started but was cut-off by the sudden entry of a half a dozen ties.  "Shit..." he whispered to himself.
"Alright, who are we fighting," quirked Liquid's voice.  He flew as if he were pondering something deep inside of himself.
Shazam had also recently been promoted.  It felt good to have a few medals under his belt.  But the pay was considerably better also.  No more cold soup, he would say to himself.
"I think we're dealing with some pirates sir...  It may have been inappropriate to issue your attention.  Not sure the engagement is..." Chip tried to explain but Liquid cut him off.
"I know your new here, but don't appoligize for everything.  It's okay, I won't do anything to ya...  This time..." Liquid said, and Shazam shivered.
"Shazam and Chath here too!" Shazam chirped annoyingly in.  Liquid chuckled to himself then issued the order to send three fighters towards the main cruiser."

Chip dodged another bolt. Stupid TIE bombers. It seemed like he was continually being issued worse craft. First, he had flown a TIE Advanced. Then they'd given him an unshielded TIE Interceptor. Now he was stuck with a slow, barely manuverable bomber. It could take more hits than an Interceptor, but the blasted thing had half the cannons and could barely dodge. The crusier was still firing what looked like ion bolts, but when they hit Chip's left solar panel, he realized there was now way in Hell that they were ions.
"Holy crap! What the heck?! Shazam, you ever see something like that? I don't know who in God's name these guys are, but they've got some funky weapons!"
There were now about a dozen enemy fighters, 9 mini-transports. and a cruiser. None of which were recognized by the targeting computer. they were an unknown make and model, with bizarre markings that didn't show up in any records. Who WERE these guys? chip pulled up hard on the stick, climbing as fast as he could. Stupid shuttle-looking fighters. Blasted things didn't know when to leave well enough alone. Well. Chip would show 'em. He managed to get a slight angle on the one trying to follow him, and loosed a burst of lasers, one of which grazed the fighter's wing. Heh. Now the thing was backing off some.
Liquid came over the comm. "All TIE's, back off and regroup near the Atrus. I want some time to figure out what we're up against."

(OOC: There will be no more personal craft on training missions, it's alright to fly one into combat if you're solo outside of VE Space, or if the TIE the Navy issued you is out of commission. )

"Alright, now that we're all here," Liquid said, looking around his cockpit into the space and noting that all the pilots were there, "We need to get back into shape, and this, by chance and chance alone, is a great start up for Kaph."

"So we're going to try going this alone??" Chipmunk chimed in.

"Yes, but we have to be careful. These Bombers that we have aren't to agile, but they will do in a pinch. The only reason I'm saying we're going this alone is because the Navy is short of personnel right now. We need to get out and about and do some recruiting, but nobody seems to want to fight with us and stay loyal."

"So, we're going alone?" Lonewolf added, almost sarcastically.

"Yes, but do not fear, we have the entire Atrus at our back going against their Cruiser, but it's good that they haven't strayed too close yet to the Atrus." Liquid said, noting that there were only 12 or so of the enemy fighters presently emerged from hyperspace. "I don't see any signs that more fighters will be coming, so unless they jump in another cruiser, we stand a chance."

---------

"Sir, what are we going to do about this 'Vast Empire' that appears to have came out of nowhere?" a young Petty Officer asked.

"We shall destroy them at all costs. Make sure the pilots know that we have backup on the way. They'll fight harder knowing that."

"Yes, Sir."

The older gentleman sighed inwardly, knowing that there would be no rescue mission for them on this day. He also knew who this 'Vast Empire' was, having battled with them before. They were formidible opponents then, and he doubted things could change that quickly.

"Alright folks, let's get a rundown on what these guys are using. Anyone seen these weird craft before?"
"Well, they look like Lambada-class shuttles, but the wings are swept back, and they have weapons that resemble ion cannons but hit like upgraded lasers. Shields on the fighters are better than standard. They are quick and effective. Pilots don't seem that well experienced, though. They may not be used to fighting TIE's. Targeting computers are unable to recognize either ship models or insignia."
    "Fine. How about the transports?"
"Small, slow, but heavy. Better shields than the fighters, probably take two or three proton torpedoes to down one.  Carry warheads and the same odd blasters. Cruiser has about the same power as a Corellian corvette, but smaller. The hangar was either nearly empty, or doesn't hold much. Third possibility is that they haven't launched all craft. Current count of enemy ships is as follows: 12 fighter/shuttles, 9 transport/torpedo gunships, and one cruiser capital ship."
"Fine. Any ideas on how to bring them down?"

(OOC:Come on, people! Five days and no posts. Shaz and Cath, lets show 'em we're the best flight in the VEN!"

(Sorry...  Been caught up in writing my own book.  Alrighty...  Let me see what I can do here.  And sorry for the personal craft...  But I don't wanna bail out of it now...  I'll just have to make it less effective...)

Shazam barreled in his viper away from a blast of fire; the bulky enemy fighters were having a hard time keeping up with the ties.
The thought of another wave or two of incoming fighters, menaced in Shazam's head.  He needed a target, he didn't like thinking on his feet.  "Chip?  Do we have a goal in mind other than beating the bad guys?"  Shazam asked.
"Well...  I see what your getting at.  Let's go after that cruiser at 3 o' clock.  We'll work our way up to the big cruisers." Chip answered.
Shazam nodded his head and attempted to fall back in line when another pair of blast targeted him.  Three fighters were on his tail...  The pilot counted them over and over again, and decided to pull away from the group.  The second blast missed him by inches, but the third nailed him.
"You okay, man?" Chath's voice rang out of the com unit as Shazam rolled and emergency lights went off.  A schematic in the cockpit showed his missle system inoperative.  Shazam smacked the controls and made a large loop to compensate for his lack of stability.  His ship wobbled wearilly as another pair of blast came at him.
Chip and Chatham had slowed, and managed to change direction without the fighter's mere notice.
Inside the cockpit of the enemy ship behind Shazam, warning lights went off and the soft hum Shazam would have known all to well sent off as well.
Shazam made a quick glance backwards, wondering why he hadn't just been shot down...  Chip was flying solo behind the three fighters; one of the fighters broke off in an attempt to get behind the young flight leader, but Chip's lasers, shattered the sheilds and left it defenseless.  Chath appeared below the group, and destroyed on the flanking fighter.  Shazam took his chances and pushed it to full throttle...  I know this won't work everytime, he thought to himself...
"Chip, Chath?  Spread out back there, and don't fly behind the remaining fighter, got it?" Shazam said into the com.  A quick jarble of words came from Chath's end, and Chip said he'd be sure to stay clear.
The fighter seemed to have fallen for the trick, because he decided to speed up as well.  This had been one of the flight's little tricks that Chatham had come up with.
Shazam made a slight pull at the controls, bringing his craft to a soft, but stern drift.  It arched, as if beckoning to the fighter behind him to follow; and he did.  For a few moments everyone was momentarilly blinded by the eruption of light, but star only made it that much more of a dramatic loop.
A star had small glowing star had erupted behind a planet 14 klicks away.  At that moment, Shazam twisted in his fighter, and screamed away as Chip and Chatham came from the opposite direction at full speed.  The bulky enemy fighter didn't know what hit him.
"I didn't expect that star to pop up!" Shazam yelled with joy.
"Man, never seen any thing like that. Heh, your lucky he didn't get his shot off, you'd been toast...  Speaking of food, I'm devestatingly hungry.  What I'd do for something to eat right now." Chatham said.
"Get your minds back on the mission guys...  Alrighty, before we were engaged by those fighters, we were going after that cruiser.  Let's do something a little special, we won't be risking much against this thing.  Chatham fly slant right, and make sure to flank it when Shazam get's around.  I'll be ready." Chip figured they knew what he was talking about, but if they didn't, they'd probably figure up some crazy stunt anyways.
Chatham pushed it to full throttle as Shazam barreled off to the right, and Chip fell back to medium throttle.  Chath pulled up and barreled his fighter so that the top hatch of his craft faced the left side of the cruiser.  He began a long loop around the side of the ship; the cruiser's gunners became aware and opened fire on the small tie.  Chath threw in a few sweeps and dives to throw the guns off of him as Chip dived below the ship and made a belly run.
Shazam got a good start at about three klicks away, and started firing at about medium throttle.  His fire battered down on the sheilds, and drew the gunner's fire towards him.  He continued his rapid fire while running in and out of the fire lanes.  Chip suddenly changed pace, and pulled up, straight towards the belly of the ship.  He left a bruise by pummeling it with his laser cannons.  He lay untouched because of all the attention Shazam had managed.
Chath had finished his loop and had begun a round of bolts at the gunneries.  The gunner's were surprised and looked for the nearest target besides Shazam.  Shazam made the moment into a quick stop, he took careful time to aim...  And fired away from his spot, he sped towards the gunners.  He suddenly opened fire and pulled up revealing a new flight of enemy fighters.  He opened fire and took down to of them immedietly.  The last one seemed to be looking for some one less obvious to shoot at, and mad his way towards Chath.  Chath continued to fire, but Chip circled the cruiser very closelly and then pulled around to blast the enemy fighter to pieces.
Shards of debris battered Shazam fighter as he continued blasting away at the ship.  The shield flickered for a moment, then turned purple and faded.  "Shields down, hit er' with all ya got guys." Chip blurped in.
Chip and Shazam lined up and started rapid fire on the center of the ship.  Chatham looped from under them, and dragged his ship around the line of fire, falling in line with them; he two began rapid fire.  Small explosions rocketed the surface an large pieces of the outer covering on the cruiser, fell and shredded away.
A hanger bay opened as an explosion rocked the three imperials.  As the enemy fighter group exited, they were completelly engulfed in fire, and sent flying through space.  A large piece of debris sliced off the rear engine of a nearby light cruiser.  The light from the star, emitted a glow showing how dark the smoke from the ship was.  It spun very slowly and recieve a missle on it's dorsal side.  It floated and exploded.  It made no sound but the ships around it got the shock.

JMac muttered something foul as he pulled the sluggish TIE bomber into another roll.  he was all in favor of Squadron drilling, but after his masterpeice of a ship, this felt like flying a box.  As he watched, a one of the transports was taken down by flight three, and a few more of the strange shuttles/fighters were taken down by two flight.

Alerted by a jolt from the force, he yanked his stick down and to the left, dodging around a blast from one of the closer ships.  The blast shot past his cockpit, momentarily darkening his viewscreen.

"Oh, we can't have that."

The dark Jedi pulled his fighter down into a tight dive, leaving Hawkman to watch his friend Liquid's back.  His targeting recticle flashed first yellow, then red, as he let a pair of torpedoes loose.    The torps slammed down into the larger ships shields in a brilliant fireball, momentarily blackiing out its sensors.  In that instant, he cut his thrusters and landed on just behind its bridge, out of sight.  A quickb encoded burst to his squadron to leave the ship alone, and he was ready.  He climbed out of the cockpit into the darkness of space, yanked some gear out of his cockpit, and started his trip across the hull.

Shazam blinked his eyes in disbeleif.  JMac was on the hull of one of the cruisers...  "You see'n what I'm seeing guys?" Shazam said into the com.
"Hmph...  I was waiting for him to do something like that..." Chip said.
"Never seen anything like it...  I'll have to try that some time." Chath put in.
Suddenly, all three of the imperial craft had the faint beep sound filling their cockpits.
"What the hell?  Not taking any time for laser's are we?" cam Chip's voice.

JMac knew that he didn't have long, his suit wasn't rated for that much vacuum, and the force wouldn't be able to keep his body heat in for too long.  Still, what he had in mind would be a lot more fun the he had had in awhile, and that was worth the slight risk.

The Corellian paused at the main sensor dish and affixed a small package that he had grabbed, then continued.  He stayed away from the engine cowlings so as to avoid radiation, but managed to place another package on the engine generators.  Lastly, the final directional charge was placed on the main hatchway, leading in.  Knowing that the impact would be huge, JMac ran away from the charges he had placed as quickly as his magnetic boots would take him, and fixed a safety line to one of the gun turrets.  His preparations complete, he pushed  a key on his datapad.

Although the vast majority of the charges was directed downwards, the remainder of the blast was enough to dislodge him from the hull and send him spinning off into space.  A tug on his safety cord redirected his flight a bit, and in a wide arc he glided through the vaccuum and into the twisted remains of the airlock.  The outpouring of atmosphere into the emptyness of space was almost enough to send him flying backwards, but he managed to slam on his magnetic boots, and with a bit of aid from the Force, he ran against the rushing wind and dodged under the closing energency door.

"Stang! Stupid shuttle things! Chatham, get this freak off me!" Chip yanked left, trying to get the blasted fighter/shuttle off his tail. The swept-back wings gave them more manueverablility than normal lambda shuttles, and so these things were dang sticky when they got behind you. The odd blue energy bolts were streaking past him. It reminded Chip of the dark-force lightining he'd seen in an action holo once. They really did look like ion blasts, but one had contacted with his solar panels, and it was no simple electronic overload.
"Cath, Shaz, where are you guys? You're not gonna have a flight leader if you don't hurry up here!" Stupid shuttle thing. It was right on his tail. It had actually pulled so close, it couldn't fire. Of course, that made it very hard for Chip to get away. Then he remembered a little move he'd seen Rusty pull back in Aegis. He went to full throttle, and even transfered power from his lasers to engines. The shuttle matched his speed, but pulled back just a little. Perfect.
"Ha. Watch this, sucker." All power from engines to lasers, throttle zero. The TIE stopped dead, and the shuttle went right by. Throttle back up, but lasers still on extra power. Nice thing about TIE bombers was they carried proton torpedoes. A torpedo, some boosted lasers, and the freaking shuttle was no more. "Serves you right, ya son-of-a-crack-whore."
"Chip, where's this shuttle you're having trouble with?"
"You're a little late, guys. Next time I scream for help, would you mind taking less than a year to save me?"

Shazam's fighter rolled around freely as it scurried away from bolts.  He had the desperate feeling he needed something to eat.  That's how he was of course, mind was never one the mission.
Shazam headed towards one of the flagship cruisers at full speed; man what I'd do for a hot...
A flash of light caught his eye and Shazam turned to find a small enemy wing knocked out by odd fighters...  "Three more cruisers just jumped in, launching fighters..."
"I don't think we can handle much more of this!" Chip said to Liquid over the intercom.
"Maybe we won't have too...  It looks like these guy's who just jumped in arn't interested in sharing the prize.  I'm guessing they're pirates as well.  They'll probably tear eachother appart.  We'll take whatever's left." Liquid quircked.
Lasers burst from the side of one of the large incoming cruisers, they blasted into belly of the flagship Shazam flew above.  The engines of the small ship flared and twisted, then with a loud wine, the explosion rocked Shazam's ship.  He flew threw the remains of the ship in haste, peices of debris skimmed his ship.  He couldn't see for a moment, some heavy smoke still hung in space.
As he drifted threw, a bright light flashed and he was blinded, suddenly his vision returned and bolt fire was every where.  A ship flashed by him and a large freighter appeared before him.  Light's blinked on and off.

OK, this was getting funky. More cruisers and fighters escorting freighters. The pirates either wanted to load up the VE craft and ship 'em off to auction, or they had no idea that the VE was going to be here. Was it possible that the first group of pirates had been mere skirmishers, sent ahead of the convoy to secure the area?
"Woa, heads up boys! The two pirate groups are tearing each other apart! What the heck is goin' on here?"
"Looks like the first group was waiting to ambush the second, and we just happened to be in the way," answered Liquid. "All VE elements, pull back to defense positions. We're gonna wait this thing out, then sock it to however is left."
The pirate fighters were ripping each other apart, and were obviously well matched. Of course, at the rate they were killing each other neither side would last long. But that was more than fine with Chip.

As the emergency hatch slammed shut behings him, JMac ripped off his suit, leaving him wearing nothing but his black jumpsuit.  He sorely missed his armor, but that wasn't something that he could worry about right now.  Instead, he quickly dumped out his equipment bag and arrayed the equipment on his body.  Now all he had to do was single-handedly take down the entire ship.

The dark man walked over the the computer terminal that was stuck in the wall and quickly cracked through the minor security, then pulled up the ship's maps.  There was really only one thing that concerned him at that point, the bridge.  It wasn't that far away, but it wasn't too close either.  Luckily, they wouldn't be expecting him, because what idiot in his right mind would try something like what he was attempting.

Finding the info, he switched off the screen and walked towards the door.  It swept open, revealing two very surpised looking crewmen that had taken the wrong way back to their quarters.  Before they could so much as breath, JMac's hand twitched, sending two daggers into their throats.  He bent down and wiped the blades clean, and then continued on his way.
