Yes, the media focusses on what gives them the fastest and cheapest shot at good ratings. For that reason, we focus on stuff that's flashy and grabs your attention rather than things that really matter.

One, that's the most basic rule of marketing, and hence capitalism in general. It doesn't make it a brilliant political statement as I think we all learned that when we were deluged by advertising while watching Captain Kangaroo...or Barney or whatever the hell you younger folks had.
As for why people mourn Columbia and not a noted dignitary is easy. We pay for the space program and we expect it to perform some magical kind of wish fulfillment for us while we drift through our everyday life. If Stephen Hawking died in a car wreck I was also a part of, that would be depressing. It would prove that he was no more better in the eyes of fate than I. Face it, the brilliant, the beautiful, and powerful all have the same odds of drowning, getting shot, and choking on their own vomit while on the can as the rest of us. That makes such an event something we'd rather forget.
As for the shuttle crew, they did something all but of a handful of us hairless monkeys (damn I love The Prophecy) will even come close to doing. For them to have failed while doing that is not only a very public act, but one which, even in death, defies imagination. -----------------------
