I figured now would be the time to bring up options for realtime chat options, IRC or otherwise. How about Slack? It has a free plan, client apps for almost every platform, including in-browser, and a lot of superficial similarities to IRC like channels that should make the transition easier. It even lets XMPP/Jabber/IRC clients connect to it, if I remember correctly. The only real gotcha I can think of is that it's invitation-based. We tried using Jabber for the Empire's Edge, and that proved to be more than we needed, in my opinion. Never found a decent mobile client for it, either. We could try to use a free IRC host, although that limits the channel control we have and requires us to prefix everything. Lastly, I can set up an IRC server on my end, although I can't promise there won't be very occasional outages. My dealings with Slack have generally been favorable. Jabber was kind of a nightmare to set up and was pretty universally unloved and I just feel that IRC is just too dated. I don't have a solution, I may come up with one it the future, but probably not, I'm just pointing this out. Bitch! I eat people.

TeamSpeak is a decent option, although I've heard hosting a TS server requires a lot more system resources.

Oh, I have a teamspeak that we can use, now that I think about it.
Can hold 30 clients currently and waiting on a Non-profit license for a 512 slot server.
