Crewman Brehan Kothari reporting for duty!
I was wondering if it would be possible to play a Duros in the Vast Empire?
I like the idea of playing a non-human in the Imperial service (even a faction as inclusive as this!)

Welcome, Crewman.

A member of the Academy faculty will be along soon to start your training formally, but I just wanted to pop in to say hello and to answer your question. Yes, you can absolutely play as a Duros character; as non-humans go, that's one of the more plausible species to choose, since they are relatively common throughout the Star Wars Galaxy.

If you haven't already, take a look at this page of the wiki, which'll give you some background about VE canon.

Welcome to the Vast Empire Naval Academy, Crewman Talos.

My name is Chief Warrant Officer Joamer Reistlin I'll be your Training Officer (TO) while you go through the Academy's Orientation program. Sorry this took awhile to get posted but I was at work all day. I'll be around to help get you acclimated to life in the Vast Empire (a process we call, "Basic Training"), the most important part of which is learning how to role-play as an Imperial starfighter pilot in an ongoing, collaboratively-written story (a set of skills which is taught in something we call, "Flight School").

With your first post here on the Naval Academy board, you've completed Imperial Initiation (well done) and are hereby clear to begin Flight School, which will prepare you for daily life as a pilot in a VE squadron. Please note: the wiki makes mention of Command School, but that training program is currently closed to new recruits; you will be going through Flight School.

Your next step should be to visit the VE Wiki page for Flight School, found here, and begin working on Chapter 1: Character Development by clicking the appropriate link (which I notice Hades has already posted in this thread). When you finish the assignment, post your work here in this thread (bio and ID line), so I can review it, and we'll proceed from there. Please note: here in the VE, we write stories in the third person, past tense; you should too.

Scars: A few pale scars on his knuckles and atop the left crown of his head. Deeper scars across his right rear abdomen.
Tattoos: Discreet traditional Durese symbols are tattooed on his left temple and the center of his collarbone.

Physical Description

Taltos stood shorter than the average Duros at 5' 6", but strongly built. In full Imperial flightsuit the only things to distinguish him from his human comrades were the discreetly too-long fingers of his black gloves.
He would rarely volunteer to go planetside, and wore a flightsuit even off-duty (which would help keep his skin damp in the arid, filtered air of a human vessel). When he did find himself Under the Sky, he would wear rugged chocolate-brown wool fatigue pants with a light grey tunic and a spacer's trusty leather boots.
A cut-down DL-44 rode on his hip, strapped to a wide black leather belt, the scope in a pouch to its side; two pouches for power packs, one for Lung Blasters, a sheath for his knife, and pouches for assorted other excursion necessities. He could never truly feel at home Under the Sky.

Personality

Taltos was reserved and quiet; for a species with a storytelling reputation he rarely spoke more than strictly necessary - but those who earned his trust and shared a long journey with him can attest that he had an odd, irony-laced sense of humor and a taste for old stories with plenty of blood.
Like many Duros, he was born aboard a spaceship, and saw space as the 'normal' environment of his kind. It would give great insight to know - if anyone did know - that in his youth he would take his ship to the most remote wilderness of planets where he would do business, spending the night in a tent beside his old Wayfarer Transport. The strange thrill never wore off.
He placed great importance in respect earned and shown, often to the point of grudge-holding if he felt he had been disrespected, but never allowed himself to indulge in revenge.
The surefire easy way to open him up was to discuss piloting maneuvers, performance or tactics; he had all the oldest Durese mythical cycles about starship combat memorized by adulthood, and had long aspired to be such a pilot himself.

Biography
Like many Duros, Taltos was born and raised aboard spaceships. By 17 he was living independently as a "Traveler", a term of respect for Duros spacers. Taltos served on the Wayfarer Transport Red Rock as helmsman, alongside his cousin Bechesmy, the Corellian captain Artoc, and a young Rodian mechanic named Kjell. Together they jumped from world to world, making a profit in both legal and illegal goods as well as a bounty here or there. The chaos - and lax customs oversight - left by the fall of the Empire had been profitable for the Travelers, but the good times wouldn't last.
T's parents were among the first to be infected when Ysanne Isard's Krytos virus hit Coruscant, both passing away not long after. As the Plague Wars raged Taltos began to lose faith in a galaxy that would kill so many with such ephemeral justification. When the Emperor's Plague hit the shipyards of Kuat, they found Artoc lying in his rented room, dead like so many other humans. The now-captainless crew soon took on more and more dangerous jobs to make ends meet.
When they came across a "pro-human" rally on Tralus, Taltos was barely able to pull his cousin out of the mob before they carried her away, and the two were able to make the spaceport before riot control locked it down. Kjell was not so lucky; they saw his body strung up on the Holonews the next day.
His cousin left Taltos with the ship, intending to weather out the war on the neutral planet of Duro; but Taltos had no desire to withdraw from the galaxy. There was evil out there - perhaps too much to ever be fought and overcome - but he'd been raised on traditional Durese stories of heroic snubfighter pilots braving all odds to bring justice to the universe, and a galaxy of evil seemed to be a galaxy with many opportunities for heroism.
Taltos looked beyond the murderous regimes of Isard, Thrawn and Frey'la; he made his way to the one part of space that had launched no biological attacks, arranged no massacres, yet reflected the stability and power he had seen growing up under the New Order, and most of all didn't look twice at the amino acids a being was made of - The Vast Empire.

Just a basic bio for now. Any feedback will be greatly appreciated, and I'll be adding more details once I've gotten a feel for Taltos IC.

Well this is a new one for sure. I've been here a very long time and spent more years in the Army Academy then I care to remember. However no one has used a bio anywhere close to this one. You've laid the ground work for a character that could prove to be very interesting.

A few tiny things. We use a slightly modified version of SW history here but most of it is small things. With your bio nothing majorly is impacted I believe and all the tiny stuff is easily fixed if it comes into play at all. For now you are good though.

You are free to move to chapter 2 also. And if you would like you can get on IRC. Either by the java chat link in my original post or using another IRC client and using irc.vastempire.com then joining #Vast_Empire our main channel. #VEN our main Navy channel and #VENA the Naval Academy channel.

I like the club's image of post-ROTJ canon. T's age makes him born in 11 BBY, coming of age and leaving home in 6 ABY, just before the Krytos Virus. With the Emperor's Plague in 10 ABY bookending his career as a spacer, that leaves two years for him to find his way to the Vast Empire and make it into training.
I tried to incorporate the Plague Wars in a decent way, and I figure if Borsk Frey-la wasn't in the Diversity Alliance, he would at least be prominent in a faction that tacitly supported them. I'm eager to learn as many details about this canon as I can, so nitpick away!
More edits will be coming to the wikipedia page under Personality as the ideas hit me.

Ooooook. Biggest thing. Farscape references keep them coming.

Second thing someone pointed out and I saw too. You have a tendency to use run-on sentences so just keep an eye out for that. But, overall very nicely done. I would probably add more in but I've been sick for a week and I'm beyond tired. Move on to chapter 3.

Been reading your stuff and I have to say, the research you put into your writing is pretty amazing and, being a more emotional writer myself, I envy that ability. Thank you for the consideration! I've read your wiki page, and Strill Squadron seems like it might be an ideal posting for Taltos! The Rogue Squadron and Wraith Squadron books in particular were a formative element of my Star Wars geekdom.

General Question: It seems unclear what I should do for the two story posts and report for phase three. Am I now free to post in general (non-chain-of-command) stories, with a report in this thread after a minimum of two posts?

You're not quite there yet. You'll need to knock out the report and then your TO and CNW will assign you a squadron. Then your graduation will be considered complete. We'll have you out of here as soon as you do the model report.

Happy to serve. Although T may not be a 'washout' per se, his *ahem* checkered past fits the bill. Given that he arrived in VE space with little other than a broken-down freighter and an ill-tempered astromech, he'll be grateful to be given a chance at sitting in a TIE cockpit at all; and while his past makes him a less-than-ideal recruit for an SCO looking for essentially a blue-eyed, broad-shouldered, crisp and obedient uniform, his more 'unorthodox', low-budget skillset might make him an appealing candidate to Joamer, IC.
