OOC: I will be handling this story.

"I thought ol' Santiago would never shut up." grumbled newly promoted Sergeant Chase Kempt of the Absolut Squad. Chase was very impatient and always wanted things done his way and right away. Luckily for his squad that his assistant was not as harsh. Corporal Kortax Hent was a very understanding, caring person; a rare gem in the midst of the empire.

The reason Chase was so grumpy was that his squad just got out of a big long briefing by their platoon commander. Of the three squads that came down to Malastare...Absolut Squad was on their way to take control over the water supply. The other squads each had a different objective and when all three were accomplished surely it would help negotiations for the better.

***********

Candy Squad on the other hand...had another goal on their mind. Sergeant Detric Zarga was charged with intercepting the Imperials before they got to the central power supply. Detric was rejected at one point from joining the empire due to his being from an alien race. The New Republic on the other hand welcomed him with open arms. Detric's assistant was none other than Corporal Uzen Hill, hero of many battles for the New Republic. Uzen was quick to anger, but very loyal to the New Republic.

It was hoped that the Imperials would manage to get to the power generators in secret, but it didn't look that way with the New Republic aware of their presence. Things could go either way at this point and it was unclear of which way things would end up turning out in the end. Each side thought they had bested the other, but in the end: there would one final truth that one had been victorious and the other had failed. What the outcome would be...only time could tell.

The squad stopped briefly to check their bearings to the dislike of many. Among those displeased was Chase. His assistant had demanded they stopped and checked where they were going, and most of the squad agreed, giving him pretty much no say in the matter. He had already gone through all the maps, directions, satellite images and every other piece of crap he'd been given on the ship here, he knew exactly what was happening.

"Okay, I'm pretty sure where we're heading is that way" Kortax called, looking up from his map and pointing to Chase's left.

"Then let's move" Chase replied. He didn't wait to check the squad were following him, he just assumed they were.

Absolut squad had been given possibly the worst job out of all the squads, at least in terms of situation. Malastare as a planet had much higher gravity than they were used to on Tadath, which much to Chase's dismay, made them walk far slower than he would of liked. It was necessary though, he didn't want to pile so much strain on their initial pace that they're unable to run for cover if the NR decides to jump them.

And to make things worse, they were in the middle of a forest, which not only made navigation difficult, but also assured everything was damn hot. The high trees were blocking out the sky, creating some sort of shield where heat cant escape, and worse in his opinion, cold air couldn't get in.

He turned his attention back to the mission at hand. The water supply of the area was right on the edge of one the nearby city, roughly two to three miles away. They decided to take the forest around the city, which although it is a substantially longer route, is far safer than risking a trip through the city. Although this was technically an 'invasion', he wasn't keen to bring that much attention down on his squad.

"Guys, be on your guard, rumours are that we have NR squads prowling the area for us" Chase called back, as quietly as possible with the whole squad still hearing.

"I thought this mission was top secret?" Kortax asked, tapping Chase on the shoulder.

"It was" He nodded in response "But I think one of our 'friendlies' got a little bit too chatty"

"Figures, so you expecting an attack?"

"If we don't get one, my luck should be strong enough for me to win the lottery at the same time. Make sure the squad are ready to react quickly"

"Got it sarge" Kortax replied, dropping back to the rest of th squad.

Elara seemed occupied with trying to keep up; she didn’t see the point in rushing if it was a secret mission, why should she be rushed, it wasn’t like she knew there were NR squads after them. That’s what she thought anyway.

“Uh, excuse me Sir, I was just wondering if we could slow down a bit?” she panted heavily, as soon as she actually caught up with the Squad Leader.

“No chance! We have very important things to be doing, and I’m not ready to be dealing with you complaining, I have enough of that back home” Chase spat, he meant well, he was focused on getting them through to the actual mission before anyone causing them hassle.

Elara kept her head down and continued marching on with the Squad. Absolut squad seemed extremely focused on their mission. And they were ready for anything that they may come across in their tracks.

The trees seemed eerie, dark and forbidden. It wasn’t a place the squad would like to have encountered alone as individuals. Elara held back from the front of the squad and placed herself into the middle so she wasn’t in danger in any way. She wasn’t ready to give her life away to NR.

“Kortax is there any chance of you telling me why Sir was on about a lottery?” she spoke up.

Kortax smiled to himself, rubbing his chin slightly before ushering everyone into a light jog to keep up with Chase. He seemed to be in his own world forgetting the rest of the squad.

“Ah, it was nothing but some slight humour my dear, nothing to worry about. Now come on, keep moving, or we will be forced into seeing Chase’s bad side, now I’m sure none of you lot want to see that. So come on!” He replied and nodded sternly in his authority over the rest.

“One more question Sir, if I may?” She cleared her throat.

“Proceed” He nodded

“What are the chances of us getting out of here alive?”

“Very slim if you doubt yourself, although, if you have confidence in what you are doing, the chances are great” he smiled lightly in her direction, giving her a warm feeling to carry on. He wasn’t too sure of the answer he gave, but if it seemed to drive on the squad more, then he was all for it.

Alema had every confidence to take down the rebels, after all even though her father didn’t do so, she had to, it was all for the family’s honor, although sometimes she’d doubt herself on whether there was really such a thing as honor, it seem to her that honor was the same thing as money and power and all that fake stuff, nothing real to her, only the mission to save the future of the Empire was, it was time to take the fight to the rebels.

She followed the squad through thick vegetations and tall trees that covered the sun and any chance of cold air, for the air to her felt very, very hot and dry, almost hot enough to bake a couple of fried eggs, and the gravity was much higher than what she was used to, at least the rebels have to get used to the same mileage. She had packed all the meals she’d need on the mission in her rucksack, wore the female armor with night and thermal vision that she herself added onto, held the E-11 rifle and vibrobayonet in her hand and on her belt at the ready, equipped with the best medical kit also in her rucksack, for she had learned from her own mother how to be the best medic the galaxy has yet to see. Even though her mother had passed away and left her to inherit the cause, Alema hoped, to the point of making herself believe she was up to it, her name literally meant protector, which meant that she had to protect her fellow squadmates from dying; it was her duty from the day she was born; now it’ll be fulfilled.

Alema heard voices of complaint from Elara to Chase, but she resisted to say anything, for she knew what her mother had said, that whenever someone complained about something, it’s their personality, they have nothing to do but complain, especially in bad weather. She’d say the same thing right now if it wasn’t for the high gravity and the swamps that she occasionally stepped in. Alema saw Kortax calming her, and her asking one more question before going on. It was rare to see Chase try to cheer up the young ones, but still he had to give the squad confidence, a warm feeling to carry on, and a kind of support that can help muster strength. Alema decided it was time she wasn’t so selfish like her father and started making friends, not enemies, like her mother, so she introduced herself and intiative took out her hand to shake:

“Hello there, my name is Lance Corporeal Alema Horrak, I heard you’re having trouble keeping up and I want to help.” Elara seem afraid, both in her expression of ‘I’m fine’ and her staring at the forest beyond, Elara still shook Alema’s hand, but the hand seems to be shaking and cold with fear.

“Alright, I won’t stop you from keeping up with Chase, but here’s the thing. My father has always wanted me to take his place as Senator because he thinks that female Twi’leks can be Senators as well, not just prostitutes, he’s seen my potential as a good Senator and I knew, but still the fire in my heart of being a medic in the imperial army couldn’t be blown out that quick. He had several tasks set out for me, cruel tasks, but my mother thought if I could complete them I could gain his trust and confidence. You want to know how cruel? I convince people to ally with a dictatorship government, that’s how cruel, I torture people, interrogate them, even my friends too, to see if they’re loyal to the Empire. I blackmail and I deceive, I did a lot of things I didn’t want to do, I wanted to quit, to give up, I wanted to ask why I had to do it, I didn’t see the point in doing it either. But still, Elara, I continued as I always have now with confidence, because he trained my stamina, my resistance to being selfish, he knew that the daughter he raised couldn’t be selfish like him, it would smear the family name and ruin his career. Elara, he’s dying with cancer and there’s nothing I can do, my friends tell me to move on, they support when I have ill-used them, such wonders why I fear then for their coming. Elara, no matter how bad the situation may seem, it can’t get worse than the end of the Empire, right? So let’s keep going and going, for whoever is in your heart, let us keep up with Chase for them.”

After that rather nice support speech, Alema saw, for the first time, the invisible fires in Elara’s eyes that firmed the confidence Alema had set in her heart. She knew that one more person had more confidence, the better progress the squad could make. Let the rebels laugh about our dying situation, ‘cause in the end, we’ll be the ones that have the last laugh. Alema thought with scorn at the trees as if they were rebels right now, laughing and mocking at them.

For a second, Chase almost felt left out. Although he was quite a while ahead of the rest of the squad, every now and again when the animals around them calmed, he heard the mutter of conversation. It was calming to know the squad were relaxed, but also worrying. He couldn't help thinking they were leaving themselves too vulnerable. it only took a group of NR soldiers to be sneaking up on them, and they'd be done for.

"Guys, concentrate and pick up the pace, I want this mission over and done with as soon as possible" He called back, his feet carrying him as quickly as possible without making a noise.

He realised he was walking too quickly too late, and staggered over a tree branch, nearly collapsing flat on his face. He cursed under his breath before picking up the pace again, only slightly slower than last time.

He couldn't quite put a finger on what was wrong. Maybe it was the high gravity, or the intense heat that seemed to be encasing him. Maybe he'd caught something from the wildlife, but he hoped not. Whatever it was, it was bugging him, and he wanted it gone. He'd been promoted mere days before leaving on this mission, something about him had obviously impressed his higher-ups. He needed to keep up that streak, and who knows what would come of it.

He thought back to Tadath, to the nights the squad spent in downtime before their active duty resumed. They spent virtually every night playing pool, throwing dice and drinking far too much. He enjoyed it, and wished it would never end, especially now they found themselves in this place. He;d made sure the squad were ready for their service, they'd all passed a field test with flying colours. The Ellara girl seemed a little unconfident, and Alema was a bit chatty, but everyone carried out their jobs perfectly. When it came down to it, he trusted his squad to get the job done, and it made him feel a bit better. It's just nerves.

The city wall was coming into site on their right, and the noise picked up noticeably as well. Somehow, the squad had expected the city to be somewhat barren, although deep down they all knew that wouldn't happen. There was no war, and there was no imminent attack, the people within the walls simply lived out their life day by day. Sure, there was rumour after rumour about what was happening in the negotiations, and what would become of the planet, but no one expected something this radical to happen today. It was probably easier that way, would end up less messy if things went wrong. Chase at least hoped the NR would not want to involve themselves in a heated gunfight with that much risk of human casualty. But this was the NR he was talking about.

Raising a hand to gather the squad together, and the gathered around in a crouched circle. Chase nodded, and Kortax pulled out a map from his supplies bag. Unrolling it, he placed a finger on a greenish area close to the solid black lines of the city wall.

"We're roughly here at the moment, and the station supplying water to the city" He began to explain, moving his finger to follow a snaking pipe, out about two or three centimetres away from where they were, to a large box shaped building "Is right here, about fifteen minutes away"

"How'd you work out where we were so easily?" Chase asked

"Well, I'm organised for one. Unlike some people" Kortax replied, winking at his squad leader.

"Alright smartass, just get on with the plan"

"Aye sarge" Kortax smiled "Okay, we're going to be infiltrating the complex via the pipe system. Its a complicated structure, but we'll only be playing with two actual pipes, the inflow and the outflow. The inflow is pretty much flooded to the rim, and highly pressured, our odds of being able to swim down it are pretty much zero. However, the outflow pipe is"

"We're swimming through crap?" One of the squad called, somewhat shocked.

"Not swimming, no, we should be able to walk"

"So we're walking through crap?"

"Pretty much yeah, any better ideas?" Kortax smiled.

"Just get on with it" Chase laughed, taking the squad aback suddenly. it had been a while since they heard him do that.

"Right, well we'll infiltrate the pipe through an incision we're going to make, in about five minutes, then walk through that and into the belly of the complex. We're counting on it not being heavily guarded, so we'll then try and take the complex from the inside out. Minimum casualties, minimum amount of fuss. Hopefully. Any questions?

The squad members each placed one of their hands into the circle and smiled to one another. It was a team thing, and for some reason they thought it would bring them good luck and it was thought to be some sort of bonding session between them all. As soon as they nodded they began off to the pipeline.

The walk wasn’t long, but also wasn’t pleasant to say the very least. The air seemed to be filled with a musty smell to begin with, but that rapidly progressed into an awful, deadly stench as the squad grew closer. Elara gazed around to the trooper next to her. It was Davis; his eyes seemed to be closing more and more due to them getting closer. They could obviously tell they weren’t far off track.

The scenery changed as soon as they were beginning to reach their destination. The tall, green trees from earlier seemed to be shrunken and an orangey lime-like mould colour. The squad stopped in their tracks just metres from the actual pipe to realise they were standing in what looked like sloppy mud, which they knew wasn’t it.

“Uh Sarge? Why the hell are we just stood here in this?!” Davis shouted to the front to where Chase was.

“I figured you’d like to just take in the scenery” He paused sarcastically before finishing the reply.

“What the hell do think you’re stood in it for? I thought I heard something okay? And my bad, there’s nothing here, so continue into the pipe before I make you eat it” He joked, he knew this was a serious mission, but he thought he had to add a little humour into it.

The squad moaned and hesitated before stepping in. The yellow, thick liquid came to each trooper’s waist, forcing them to walk through it at a slower pace than they anticipated.

“What the hell is that?!” Elara called out jumping up and down frantically and pointing her finger to a traumatic sight.

“You don’t want to know…” Chase called out, sniggering to himself.

The whole squad laughed at Elara shouting ‘eww’ after every step she took.

“Stupid child” Davis called out.

Detric Zalga sat in the barracks as he had been doing usually of late. With news that the Imperials were trying to get to the power supply station, the entire base had been on full alert. Uzen, his second-in-command, had suggested that they charge in and take them out before they could even get a chance to make a move, but as always, the higher-ups had taken their time with a decision, which inevitably became to wait them out and see what they would do. Detric sighed as his he looked down at his A280 and saw its black frame shimmer in the fluorescent lighting. As he started to drift off in though, Uzen walked in.

“How’re you holding up Sarge? Think you ready for whatever the Imps throw at us?”

Detrick got up, his camouflage fatigues giving his already large frame a more menacing presence.

“I’d hope so. I’ve been cleaning and retooling my kit for the last hour and a half now. I just hope I don’t run out of ammo when the time comes actually fight.”

Uzen laughed; Detric figured that after all of Uzen’s years of service to the New Republic, he knew what to expect from the Imperial Stormtrooper Corps. Detric had to remember that while he may have only joined three years before, Uzen had been a member since the battle of Hoth.

“No worries, Sarge. If worse comes to worse, we can always just push them back like we’ve managed to do so many times before. And from what I can you, the armory is plenty stocked with tech that can make some very nice dents in plastoid armor.”

Detric laughed at that; he had tried to join the Empire many years before, during the Civil War, but was refused because he was a Chagrian. Because of that, he had a somewhat of a bitter afterthought of the Imperial army. He walked over to a mirror and check his horns to make sure they were well filed and kept short. Uzen started to laugh.

“I’ve never met such a vain commanding officer in all of my life.”

Detric snorted. “You try having foot long horns sticking out of your head and wearing a military issue helmet. Trust me, if you had to deal with these things like I did, you’d want to keep them filed down.”

As he finished that sentence, the datapad at his hip beeped. He took it out of his pocket and gave it a look. Across the screen it read that he and Uzen were needed in the Intel wing. He put the datapad back in his pocket and nodded to Uzen. They both walked out the door and towards the Intel wing. Detric just hoped it wasn’t going to be bad news.

--- --- --- ---

Detric and Uzen walked through the door and heard a hiss as it closed behind them. The Intel wing was bustling with activity as always, but something seemed different; something seemed a lot more urgent than a typical protocol. Detric walked over to the head analyst and looked over his shoulder, staring at an internal readout of the facility.

“Well Mical, you called us down here for a reason. So what is it?”

Mical jumped, spilling his caf on the floor. He swore, well Uzen stood in back, attempting to stifle his laughter at the technician.

“Well, other than to sacre the living hell out of me, I called you down here because It looks like we have a slight situation. Sensors picked up a breach in the waste pipe in the water treatment plant. There are no engineers down there, so I can only assume that there was some Dianoga has managed to get into the piping. At any rate, we’re not taking any chances given the current situation. HC wants Candy Squad to get down there and to check it out. You have to leave ASAP.”

Detric nodded as he turned around and out of the Intel wing back towards the barracks. He sent out a message to all of Candy squad to meet him in the Candy squad ready room as soon as possible. Uzen tapped him on the shoulder after he put the datapad away.

“Well, looks like we’ll get a chance to shoot something after all.”

Detric nodded; for his sake, he really hoped it was just a Dianoga.

PVT Liason Travias was wiping some mud and dirt off his rifle's scope when the call came in:

Sgt.Zalga to all Candy Squad members:

Squad Briefing in 10 minutes. Meet in the ready room.

The young PVT's eyes hardened. He'd been working on his A-280 blaster rifle. Usually, it was the staple of New Republic riflemen, having excellent accuracy and a good rate of fire while being powerful.

Travias had never been a fan of 'full auto,' unlike many normal soldiers, generally favoring finesse over blunt strength, and so favored 3- or 5-round bursts and semi-automatic. So he'd taken his rifle into his own hands.

He'd replaced the built in scope with a rail and a securing system. That way, he could change his scope as the event required. If it was night, he'd place a night-vision scope on.

He was an experienced sniper as well as rifleman, and his rifle showed- it could mount a super-range class scope able to zoom a few dozen times the norm, as well as an increased barrel length. This allowed him to shoot even more accurately, but also made the rifle and extra equipment a lot heavier. It also required more cleaning and tune-ups.

The man looped his shoulder harness into the loops of the rifle. Over his fatigues went a light body armor suit.

Travias thought for a moment - the ready room was for spur-of-the-moment briefings like that armed burglary last week, and pointed towards action out-of-base.

He peered out the window, to feel the heat radiating off of the building. He pulled on one of his light camo jackets and a combat helmet, then belted on his sidearm, a combat knife, and a bunch of extra ammo.

He quickly sorted through the half-dozen scopes in his bag. Night vision, extra length, durable, combat, heavy combat; his scopes were his pride and joy. He selected the normal combat scope, then slipped the heavy combat scope in on a whim. Rise polished the scope's tough lens, then picked up his cleaned scope, attached it to the rifle. He then picked up his bi-pod as well, folding that snug with the rifle.

He hung it over his shoulder, and placed a pair of frag grenades and smoke grenades into his belt as well, before quickly walking from his barracks room towards the briefing.

Nor Jacbsan looked out into the forest for any sign of movement amongst the trees. Private Blake Denex was sitting on a tree stump beside him. They were on watch outside the small compound in which most of there platoon was stationed. All Republic compounds and forts where on high alert all over the planet since the report of enemy movement.

"Think we'll see any action?" Blake said resting his chin on the butt of his rifle with the other end in the dirt.

"Well intelligence says there's at least a platoon of stormtroopers moving around out here and since our platoons creation we've always been placed on the front lines or to counter something or on some suicidal mission or other. Secondly, don't do that," Nor said pointing at Blakes weapon, "You'll clog the barrel."

They both sat in silence for another while then got up and started for there hourly patrol. Moving around a corner they walked along a flat concrete wall looking around out into the never-ending forest. After another hour or so they reached the point they'd started at.

"Nothing again," Blake said disappointedly.

"Weren't you listening to me earlier, we're always on the front line, in the trenches, at the front of the advance. you'll get your chance, I know I've had my share."

"What's it like?"

"Terrifying. Now c'mon, our shift is up."

They moved down a bland poorly lit corridor when Nors' datapad started to buzz slightly. He heard a buzzing noise coming from Blakes as well. They both reached for their datapads and read the message stored.

"What does yours say?" Nor said,

"Meeting,"

"Same, lets go."

They moved quickly further down the corridor. The message had only given them ten minutes and it was a good bit to the meeting room. They weren't going to get a chance to change out of there full combat gear they were required to wear when patrolling. Though judging by the short notice of the message they wouldn't be required to.

*********

Nor and Blake reached the mission briefing room and walked in. The rest of Candy squad was assembled. Their squad leader was standing ruffling through papers. No one said anything as they sat down on a pair of durasteal chairs.

"How far away did you say this complex would be?" Chase called back, trying to avoid showing disgust in his voice.

"Cant be far now, like 15 minute tops" Kortax replied

"I thought out entire journey wouldn't take fifteen minutes"

"It wouldn't, if we were on dry land. In this stuff it would take far longer"

"Typical" Chase muttered.

To his surprise, the waste around him had shrunken from waist level to just below his kneecaps. It made the smell all the more worse, as now his trousers were giving it off and not only the pipe. He presumed there was some sort of mechanism keeping it at a regular place, so that they could monitor it correctly without having it overwhelm them. Possibly a few fans cutting away at it under their feet, but he definitely hoped now. Hadn't heard any whirring, anyway.

The squad behind him were still complaining, much to his amusement. Half of the squad were shouting out in disgust, and the other half were telling that half to be quiet. He wasn't that worried about the noise at the moment, as the equipment he could hear up ahead was making a lot more than they were. Later on he would ask them to pipe down, but not a for a few more minutes.

"Glad I got you all to bring spare clothes huh?" Kortax called, Chase catching a smirk on his face as he glanced over his shoulder.

"Well if you told us what the clothes were for, we wouldn't of come!" Davis growled back.

"Oh you would, Chase would of shoved you in here naked if he had to"

"Sounds like a good idea to me, someone strip him" Chase said.

"Anyone touch me and I'll kill you all" Davis cried "I mean it! Back off!"

"Relax, we're kidding" Kortax patted him on the shoulder after dropping back to his speed "We're leave your boxers intact"

"Not funny"

"No more talking guys, and look sharply"

The squad looked forward to where Chase was pointing. Now, in a a line along the 'water', was a row of bubbles. Not the bubbles they had met for some while now, that would pop at the surface and release a horrible smell, but proper bubbles, caused by impact with the waste. Which meant only one thing, something was hitting at the waste down there, most likely fans.

Alema went through the muck, trying not to puke or get disgusted at everything around her, plus try to stop the squad from complaining even more, while keeping her guard up from any sudden movement in the pipe. It’s bad enough with the smell now it’s getting really annoying now; even the squad isn’t making any progress. My mom taught me to be patient, but I’ve been patient throughout this whole thing, trying to help them realize that they’ll have to bear the complaints in their hearts, telling them life’s hard but your ambition will drive you to do impossible things. That’s it, I’ll have to do— She told herself in her mind annoyingly before something happened that didn’t go in her favor or to her liking, bubbles popped up

“Oh perfect, what the hell more could add to our troubles, bubbles, coming from the fans, probably, my god, what could be more troubling, a couple of guards coming to----” Alema heard what she feared worst, her teammate, private Harvey complaining with a childish voice, while some of his teammates agreed, others snapped at them, and then even more terrible was Chase’s quick and raging response, with that desperate look on his face:

“That’s enough! I’ve had it with the complaints, alright?! What is this, a boy scout, huh? We are trained for anything to happen, even if the enemy were well aware of our arrival, which I doubt they would be, we can adapt to the situation, we have to figure out what’s going on and stop complaining!”

“Chase, stop, please, for the sake of the squad, for once, alright? Some of them know the harsh environment, understand it, and some of them aren’t used to this, it’ll give them more pressure if you keep---“ Alema calmed Chase with a easing look, but it wasn’t going to ease Chase as he stood firm on his response, saying confidently:

“The squad can keep calm if they’re less complaining and more moving, the bubbles mean that fans or no fans, this waste is getting higher. We won’t rule out the possibility that the rebels know we’re here, but we still have to keep moving, to get out alive, I want all of you to get yourself in a confident position, for like Alema said, it can’t get any worse than the end of the Empire, let’s go!”

“Yeah, wake up and smell the flowers, people, because it ain’t gonna get any more fresh and sweet like this. Let’s go!” Alema also supported the squad, but it still seemed forever to convince them to keep going, Alema thought that Chase was almost considering a whip for those mules that didn’t listen, and while other students kept persuading the students to move on; Alema was more worried about Elara.

“Elara, do you know what I mean by smelling the flowers?” Alema questioned her like questioning a five year old child, while she answered simply, smiling:

“Just imagine this is somewhere else, that’s all. A really simple moral lesson yet again, you are the master.”

“No, all this time I told you it was my father who taught me the most important lessons in life, while it was really my mother. She taught me that think of nothing but protecting those who need to be protected from death, worrying is not gonna help, whining isn’t either, the world can’t revolve around you, so you’ll have to learn to adapt.” Alema told Elara, whispering it to her ears, even with Private Harvey mocking softly behind her ears about Chase.

I can’t change him even if my sharp ears can hear him. I can only change Elara, she has hope to become a great soldier for the Empire yet, I just have to build confidence in her, that’s all, like what my mother’s been doing, thanks mom! Alema reflected, looking at Elara, her eyes burning with a little bit more fire, but more depression in her breath than hope. She’ll pull through; I know she will, I just gotta have faith, just like my mother always have.

They were fans up ahead. Even if they were submerged a few feet below them, the noise somehow permeated the barrier. Plus, as the sqaud stood still for a while, they could see the dark brownish colour of the water becoming lighter, almost instantaneously after passing over that area of the tunnel.

"So, what'd we do?" Elara called forward.

"Well, we cant go back, we're too far behind schedule already. There has to be some way through" Chase said, crouching down as low as he could to the surface of the waste.

"And risk being chopped to pieces by the cleaning devices?"

"Any better ideas Kortax?" Chase growled back. Something caught his eye on the surface of the water, and suddenly something came to him "Wait, everyone, go through your packs and pull me out anything that isn't vital"

If the squad didn't think he was mad before, they did now. Stood in the middle of a waste tunnel, stinking to high heaven, he now wanted them to have a clearout. The squad looked to Kortax, who they hoped to be the voice of reason, but he just nodded and did as he was told. No one argued with Chase.

Chase was hoping for some sort of holy grail in the discarded items, but he was nowhere near finding it. A pack of playing cards, a few used water bottles, a half used pack of condoms that Davis was reluctant to give up, and some business cards for a taxi company. He took a second look at the water bottles. They weren't exactly huge, being able to hold no more than a litre, but they'd have to do. Placing one of the bottles in both hands, he submerged them down till he felt them hit the bottom of the tunnel, and began to walk forward, keeping the bottles about two feet ahead of him. He managed to walk far further then he thought he would before he felt one of the bottles break in half from the force of the fan. Checking the bottle, he he had just over half of it left, it was enough so he leaned forward, very carefully, and touched the floor with the bottle on the other side of the fans, and pulled it back towards him until it got cup up again.

"The fans aren't that far across, less than half a metre. We could get across them" He smiled

"How?"

"Well, you could try and step across them...Or we could climb"

"Climb? Sir you've seriously lost it..." Davis shouted.

Chase shot Davis a dirty look, before pulling a pair of knives from his trouser pocket and ramming them through the roof of the pipe. They made it all the way through up to the hilt before jamming. Chase took a deep breath, before placing one hand on each of the knife hilts, and pulling. The knives, to his relief, didn't budge an inch, but instead he managed to pull himself several feet off the ground.

"This tunnel isn't no normal material" Chase smiled quite smugly " They cant have this sort of stuff leaking out, it could do some major damage to the wildlife around here. This material is quite hard to puncture but if it happens, its designed to hold onto to what it is punctured by, keeping the vacuum intact. Its strong enough to hold a human body, we it is possible to clamber over"

"Chase, that's genius" Kortax smiled, pulling out whatever blades he had on him, instructing the squad to do likewise. Between them they managed to create a makeshift ladder consisting of four rungs made up of eight blades. It should be enough. The squad had a game of rock, paper, scissors to decide who would go first, it was a lame idea but effective. Elena was chosen, so Chase and Kortax lifted her up to the knife hilts. They let her get her grip and become comfortable, before stepping back and watching her lurch her way to the next rung. She lifted her legs as high as she could over the area the fans were in and kept going. Her toes were still submerged in the water, and the squad cringed as they watched them wade through the water, but sighed with relief as they came to no harm.

One by one, the rest of the squad followed, all slowly but steadily making their way across to no harm. Chase went last, being the member of the squad with the most upper-body strength, he spent time trying to pull the knives out behind him. He got two or three loose, but the rest weren't moving.

Up ahead, they could see the platform up into the complex, they'd finally arrived. It wasn't as will lit as he'd expected, nor as busy. There were five or six wires leading out of the water, tying themselves into a bundle and working their way up a stairway to where they assumed the real work happened. The squad visibly picked up their pace, eager to finally get onto dry land.

Chase paused them just before they emerged onto the platform, using the lack of light to check for security. There were no surveillance cameras, there was no need for them in a sewage pipe, and he presumed no one really wanted to risk their health to this smell, no wonder it was quiet. The squad silently made their way out of the water, and huddled in the corner to change their clothes. The men couldn't give the women much privacy apart from turning around, but there wasn't many complaints, everyone couldn't wait to get the stinking clothes off.

"Alright guys" Kortax whispered "We'll going to make our way up those stairs in a while, but because of the open-ness of the situation, we're going to have to take hostages. Once we're public, we're probably going to get into a situation if we don't take control"

"So, threaten to kill anyone that moves, and if they pull a gun or go for a button, put a round through their head" Chase finished the sentence.

There wasn't much more to be said after that, everyone just kind of nodded and got to their feet, waiting for Chase or Kortax to take the lead. Everyone checked their weapons had their safety's off, and a full cartridge, before silently moving up the stairs. They made it up about half way before the room came into sight. One large circular table dominated the room, beeping computers and flashing lights creating that lab feeling. Around the outside there were several more large computers, with various scientists pressing things and taking readings. With one wave of the hand, the squad ran and made their move.

A particularly loud step caused one of the scientists to turn around, he was at the terminals closest to the squad, and took a blaster butt to the face for it, dropping him instantly. This caused the rest to turn around and a cry to break out, but the squad quickly regained control. They spaced out around the room, making sure no corner was left unwatched, shouting orders out. Chase and Davis were among the loudest, noticeably demanding the scientists "Get on their knees before they blow their fucking heads off".

Kortax took his eye off of two scientists in the corner for a split second to throw a hand signal to Chase, but it was enough. Enough time for one of the soldiers to send the pre-written message he had left on his comlink, just in case. It had really paid off, he pressed one button and it disappeared from the screen, once again leaving him innocent.

Alema was glad to be out of the disgusting sewers and into some new and fresh clothes. She had followed the squad to one of the main control room and took hostages immediately, sworn to be peacekeepers and nothing else. She kept a close watch on the scientists, quickly noticing something strange about one of them besides Kortax, who had waited for Kortax to look away for one sec to send out a message on a comlink, and erasing it in the process. This is quite serious; I’ll have to report to Chase about this. Alema said to herself in her mind, considering how she should carry this out before giving out a signal to Chase, pointing out the scientist who had done it. Chase paid no mercy to him and threw him against the wall, pointing his rifle against his left knee, asking angrily:

“I hate to have to shoot your kneecap off, so let’s have it, what the hell did you sent, our teammate here told us all about it.”

“Never, you’ll have to kill me for that information; I’ll never reveal what I did. Candy squad will be here in about ten minutes tops, anyways, so, you’re well out of luck.” Once the man stopped to gulp, Alema saw Chase pull the trigger with his right hand and holding the man still with his left hand, further doing so by pressing the wound with his right hand. Chase continued, smiling at the scared look on the man’s face:

“Not so smart now, are you? Now tell us about this Candy squad that you’re eagering to come and where the rest of the facility staff are?”

“Ahh--- I’ll never tell you where--- ahh!”He screamed again as his resisted to answer, getting another bullet in the other kneecap, putting his left foot slowly on it to keep adding pressure to it. The man finally came to senses and answered, with some hesitation and pain:

“Alright, Alright, I’ll tell you, I’ll tell you. Just stop and let me live, I want to go back to my wife and kids, I don’t want to die. The Candy squad is especially to help us watch the complex, in case a imperial squad like you infiltrates. I was to prepare a pager to sent to them in case that we were taken as hostages. The message is already gone, but backup will be coming. The rest of the facility probably stayed in the other main control rooms to avoid getting caught alone, you won’t have much time to catch them anyway, they’ll be coming.”

“Well, let them come, we have the hostages, what are they going to do, kill the hostages for the sake of the Republic.” After his short, confident response, he relaxed his grip on the man’s kneecaps, not taking his eyes off him as Alema heard him relay to the squad: “David, Harvey, go check out the rooms in the complex, make sure they all come to us on their knees and not moving a tick, alright? And Alema, get this guy patched up, I won’t have the other employees see him like this, they just might resist us.”

“Yes, sir, we’ll get on it, right away.” David and Harvey nodded, while Alema watched as Chase stood up and left Alema to watch the other scietntists. Alema got to patching up the man right away, applying bacta and bandages, as the man said, taking out a box of great craftsmanship to give to Alema:

“If I die here, take this to my wife and children, add on to my corpse. I’m the only scientist willing to marry for my next generation to have a better future. I know that you people are no more willing to be killing us than they are, but they’ll do it because you have your orders not to. Thank you, my dear, thank you for the tremendous help.”

“You don’t have to this, you know, you aren’t going to die here. I’ll make sure of that. But I’ll do what you ask, for a man’s last wish, no matter whether he is with the New Republic or the Empire.” Alema promised the man with her firm look and calm voice as she continued to patch up the man’s wounds. For I am the protector, I’ll make sure every person in this room gets out of here alive, today, if I have to sacrifice my own life for it.

Spark sighed heavily, waiting just wasn't in his nature. It just wasn't something he was trained to do, he would rather be here than anywhere else at the moment. Specially considering the un avoidable was coming and very fast.

“So how long do you think it will take for them to get here?” Spark asked out loud, he wanted some action and soon.

“I don't know, but we will know when they get here, that's for sure. I hope they get here fast, I'm hungry for some Candy.” Harem said. Spark just stared at her, the joke was lame, but he knew it was just to try and lighten the situation considering all that had happened.

“Right.. Candy.” Spark just shook his head and went back to waiting.

Harem on the other hand was watching Alema. There was something strange about Harem, every time someone was dieing or hurt she would start shaking and just stand there doing nothing, but that was only if it was someone she cared about. In this occasion she was just watching, as if trying to take in everything that Alena was doing.

“is he going to be alright?” Harem asked.

“He'll be fine, I just need some space.” Alema replied.

Harem quickly obliged and got up, quickly taking a seat next to Spark. Who didn't mind, but was still worried about her.

“Hey are you okay?” Spark asked, waiting for a reply, but only got silence. Spark was truly worried, not only was this one of his squad mates down, but this was his friend.

Yea, I'm fine,  I just can't bear to lose the one's I love again, including you. She couldn't tell him that, It would show that she was weak, and nothing was more important to her than showing her fellow squad mates that she was just as tough as they were. “Yea, I'm fine.”

Spark just left it at that, he didn't want to bother her to much. I hope these Candy people get here soon....

“Alright everyone get ready, we have company, make sure you give them, a warm welcome.” Chase said,a grin spread across his face.

“I hope they like their food burnt.” Spark side standing up. He heard Harem laugh behind him.

Uzen wasn’t a happy camper.

He hated confined spaces. He hated being covered in filth. He hated being in complete darkness.

Somehow, as fate would have it, he would have to tackle all three of these undesirables in one setting. He was beginning to question now whether the life of a New Republic soldier was indeed for him.

Detric walked on towards the briefing room and made no noise, fully enveloped in his thoughts. His filed down horns were a strange look for a Chagrian, and Uzen had never quite got accustomed to them.

Down the hallway they could both see the many faces of Candy squad begin to pour into the briefing room. There were still a few missing, by the looks of it, but it was early. He was almost positive they would all get there in time, lest they incur their squad leader’s wrath.

Detric walked in first and gave a nod and a wave to his underlings. They all returned crisp salutes almost at the same time. Uzen waved and got no response back. He hated his job.

“I’ll begin when everyone has arrived. Until then, at ease.”

With that the small room burst into the quiet rumble of casual chatter. It was such that Uzen couldn’t pinpoint on any one conversation, and would only catch fragments of sentences here and there. He took the chance to look at his squad leader’s data pad and try to gather a little more information about the task at hand.

With a few taps of his finger, he had accessed the briefing file.

He read carefully, and even re-read some parts to make sure he didn’t miss a detail. He wasn’t sure why he felt this way, but he was almost certain that the hole had not been made naturally. Dismissing it as just paranoia, he put the data pad down just as the last trooper of Candy squad arrived into the room.

Detric checked the time, and with a smile, looked up and addressed his squad.

“Well, let’s begin.”

--- After the Briefing---

It troubled Uzen that everyone took this mission so lightly. Everyone except him and Detric seemed convinced that this would just be a routine check to check a hole in a sewage pipe.

“You know, I have a bad feeling about this, Sarge” said Uzen as he tightened the strap on his breastplate of armor, and holstered his heavy blaster pistol.

He wasn’t sure whether Detric hadn’t heard him or had simply ignored him.

Uzen kept his hand close to his pistol.

Any chance of a well earned rest had gone flying out the window with the leaked message. Chase wanted to be angry at someone, anyone for allowing that slip-up, but when it comes down to it it was no one's fault but his own.

The squad were busy passing ammo between themselves, making sure every weapon they had contained a full cartridge, and that they had all entrances sorted. They weren't going to be caught by surprise a second time.

Claustrophobia snuck in suddenly. They were in one room, that wasn't all that big, with really only one fast escape route. And that was the way Candy squad were coming. This was the NR they were dealing with, the horrifying things they've done spread far and wide quickly. They could just throw a handful of grenades in and have it be done with. So what if they lost a handful of scientists and some computers, both are easily replaced, and they'd dealt a swift blow to the Empire.

"Kortax, take Alema with you and find your way into another room with a good sight on this one, Davis, take Sparks and do the same but on the other side of the doorway. We'll catch them in a pincer and rip them to shreds before they can pull a trigger" Chase shouted, suddenly panicked "Elara, search everyone here and take any sort of electrical devices off them, no more mistakes"

The called people passed words between themselves, before the two pairs snuck out of the room and down the hallway. Kortax wandered around the scientists, helping out Elara while also checking everyone were in the right positions.

Candy Squad, Absolut presumed, were specially trained to deal with such a threat as their own. The fact they were already on the premises was worrying, as if they knew that trouble was brewing. The nervous glances passed between various members of the squad supported Kortax's thought pattern, he hoped the other squads were okay. Some of the others had more dangerous, gunfight filled missions, with far more ability for them to go wrong. Although there route here was by far the least pleasant, at least they had been safe. Until now.

Private First Class Brace Trevers was never one to turn down a challenge. As a child and former amateur kickboxing champion, he had had his fair share of them. And as a soldier of the New Republic, he refused to back down from a fight. He had only been a member of Malta platoon for six months, and his first assignment was the liberation of Malastare. Of course, he hadn’t counted on running into the Imperial Army so soon. From what his father had said, the Imperials were a tenacious bunch, but had the tendency to sorely underestimate their opponents. Brace figured that after the Death Star was destroyed at Endor, that thought process went way out the window. As he stood there, kicking at a hanging training bag, he heard his datapad beep. Hmm, I wonder what it could be now. If its another practice lockdown, I may just go insane, Brace thought. He looked down at his screen and saw that a meeting had been called for Candy squad. His eyes widened in excitement. Finally, a mission! Oh thanks the stars. I thought I was going to be in this bunker for the rest of my life. Brace grabbed his things and ran down to the meeting room. It may turn out to be an exciting day after all.

---Some time after the meeting…---

Brace couldn’t believe it. He had a dead stare as he fastened his armor plates to his blast vest and strapped his holster to his right hip. A dianoga? They want me to get in full gear for a dianoga? Command must really be paranoid to send an entire squad into a sewer. As he grabbed his Power-5 from his locker and strapped it into his holster, he felt a tap at his shoulder. Jonathon Gaines, one of his friends from basic training, stood there smiling. As Brace turned around the smile faded from his face.

“What’s wrong Brace? I thought you’d be happy to get out of here. You’ve been talking about going on an extended vacation just so you’d never have to see duracrete again.”

Brace sighed as he put on his camo shirt and started to attach his breastplates onto his chest; he didn’t even understand why he was putting them on, but he wasn’t about to disobey his sergeant.

“Jon, I’m getting in full combat gear that weighs 20 kilos, lugging around an assault rifle than can punch a half meter hole in durasteel and going into a sewer to go squid hunting. What exactly do I have to be happy about?”

Jon put his hands up in mock defense; he always was one to downplay the current situation.

“Woah now. You make it sound like you’re trying to get yourself killed. Are you hoping we run into the Imps down there? If you are, I’m bringing you down to the psych ward right now.”

Brace laughed; despite his personality, Jonathon always had a way of cheering Brace up.

“No, no it’s not that. It’s just… I dunno. When I joined the New Republic Army, I was under the impression that I would travel the galaxy and visit exotic places. Ya know, fight the good fight. I did not, however, think that I would be going hunting for a cephalopod in a sewer underneath a military installation.”

As Jon was about to open his mouth with a retort, Corporal Uzen came over and gave them both a rather dirty look.

“When you two girls are done talking, I’d appreciate it if you’d hurry up. The sarge is ready to move out.”

Brace went back to fastening his armor to his suit and grabbed his A280 and some spare blaster clips. He donned his helmet and walked outside where the others were waiting. Sergeant Zarga nodded at the squad and turned around and pointed to the lift, leading down to the water treatment plant. Candy squad piled in and Brace stood towards the back, the rifle butt on the floor with his hands over the bore. All the way down, he was shaking his head at the situation. Dianogas. What a joke.

The lift ride down to the water treatment plant was an uncomfortably silent one.

The entire squad fit into the industrial repulsor lift, which was convenient. If they had told Private Jet Pottes to stay behind and wait for the next lift, there was a good chance he'd make a run for it and feign some sudden ailment or injury.

He was nervous as hell. The prospect of going on a wild squid chase through what could be kilometers of dark, dank sewage pipe wasn't exactly helping his mental state either.

A greenhorn, Jet was the typical New Republic recruit. A young man from a relatively poor family, he wanted to leave the boring country life and seek adventure in the armed forces. After just barely graduating from the academy, he was tossed into Candy squad. His experience in the last 2 months had not been as sweet as the name of his group suggested.

He stood all the way in the back, his holster open, his pistol dangling, his helmet on crooked, his blast plates not on tight enough. He was what their squad leader Sergeant Detric Zarga called "a sorry excuse for a soldier." Jet just hoped that if he stayed quiet enough, they'd forget he was even there and leave without him.

And maybe his plan would have worked, if he wasn't scared half to death and his teeth weren't chattering inside of his head.

LCPL Hoffman took notice and moved in for the kill, as was the custom for most lance corporals who thought they were much better, even though in all likeliness he had only been in the new republic a few more months than Jet.

"I bet you're missing the moisture farm now, eh Pottes?"

This got a rise from the other troopers on the lift. It was so damn quiet that they likely heard him a floor above and below.

Jet didn't respond. He tightened the chin strap on his helmet to the point where it secured his jaw firmly to the rest of his head. The shaking stopped.

"you know..." Hoffman leaned in and whispered. "...dianogas have been known to bite a hole straight through the chest of a grown man." His intimidation tactics were too much for Jet. He let out an audible gulp.

The lift came to a jolt, slowed down, and then completely stopped.

Sergeant Zarga and Corporal Hill stepped out and prepared to split into groups.

Meanwhile, Private Pottes prepared for what would most likely be the straw to break the bantha's back. He already wanted out. If he came back alive, he would make sure he didn't spend one more day in Candy squad.

Alema finished bandaging up the scentist’s kneecaps as she saw another female trooper, probably Harem with laughs across her face, she could see the trooper’s sad expression underneath that faint laugh, but Alema had no time to ponder on it as she heard Chase’s orders. Alema put the box carefully in her rucksack, promised to the man once again she was going to keep him from death, and nodded at the word passed from Kortax.

Soon they made their way down the hall with their backs facing each other and into the second office opposite the main control room that they were just in, covering each others’ backs all the way. When they made their way to the office, there was no sign of Candy squad as they took up positions inside the office by the windows, where they were able to get a perfect view of the control room and the entrances leading to the control room.

“So, Alema, you were looking at Harem at one of her woeful moments. She usually has them when someone close to her or someone that she cares about dies or is hurting in front of her. You can help Elara, but you can’t help her, she has dealt with that pain for a long time.” Kortax remarked, a sign of pity in his voice, helping Alema set up a makeshift cover with the round table in the office.

“Jeez, since when did you get so pitiful about Harem, I’ve dealt with the pain of losing someone for a long time too, if you didn’t notice, although I’ve give her peace by knowing what she has taught me, will be taught to everyone else.” Alema replyed, with every sense of remorse for her mother’s death, while Kortax looked at her and couldn’t help patting her shoulders to comfort her. Alema heard Chase interrupt with updates:

“Kortax, we’ve gotten all the electronical devices out of the scientists. One of the them was uncooperative, but we were lucky that Alema made such a good friend in that ‘SOS scientist.’”

“His name is Marcus, and you Chase, should learn to respect people more. He’s just an NR scientist trying to make a living and avoid death, with wife and children all worrying about when he’ll get back.” But Chase quick cut in her explanation of the ‘SOS scientist’ to continue his updates:

“Thank you Alema, for the wonderful reminder. I’ll be sure to do that when they don’t always point their guns at me or complain about my peacekeeping laws, like confiscating their electronic device. Now, Kortax, Davis has told me that he’s ready on the opposite side of this room, are you ready?”

“Of course, we have heard no enemy activity yet, but with Alema’s sharp ears and eyes, we won’t miss them, we’ll hope Davis is keeping their eyes and ears sharp too.” Kortax responded with a bit of sarcasm in his kind voice, while Davis seems to have heard it, chuckled a bit and only said with confidence:

“No worries, we’ll be listening and watching, easy as cake to concentrate with this kind of silence. You just take care of those scientists in there for Alema’s sake, Chase, alright?”

“Yeah, Yeah, I sure will. For Alema’s sake, I----”

“Hold on a sec, Chase, I hear someone coming and it’s not a friendly either. It just might be Candy, they’re not far off.” Alema relayed what she heard to everyone, giving them shock and excitement at the same time. Finally we get to play the notes of death, let their blood be sacrificed for the lives of these scientist and these men here, sworn to protect them, I being one of them, wish me luck, mother, I’ll need it. Alema prayed to herself as she trained her rifle on the battle ahead, wherever they may come out.

Hendal Luchivik wasn’t in the mood for sewer diving or spelunking or any other euphemism the troopers attached to it. A sewer is a sewer, and any way you look at it, it stinks, both literally and figuratively. He turned on his helmet light and looked around. There were rats the size of his foot running along the ground, and while he was a soldier of the New Republic, the sight of giant sewer rats creeped him out a little. As he tightened his grip on his rifle, the sergeant called the squad around him.

“Okay, listen up. Command wants us down here, and we’re not going to fuss about it. If you want to complain, keep it to yourselves, because I sure as hell don’t want to hear it. So, with that little bit out of the way, we can get down to business. We’re taking two groups into the sewers, and we’re going to meet in the offices in the water treatment plant. From there, we’ll regroup and go further down if command tells us, because they’re the ones that give us food and a bed.”

Zalga took out his datapad and started thumbing through the schematics of the facility; Hendal just wished he would hurry the hell up so he could out of here and eat something hot in the mess hall. Zalga finally looked up at the squad and started calling out names.

“All right. Uzen, you take Luchivik, Vla’ask, Gaines, Travias and Orda. I’ll take the others. As I said, we’ll meet up in offices. Oh, and try not to step in anything. Move out.”

Luchivik grimaced a little bit; he could have shown him at least a little bit of respect by calling him by his first name. With that, Zalga turned on his heel and went off into the dark, dank sewers. Uzen turned to his group and nodded.

“All right. Let’s get this over with. Travias, Orda, you two take point. Vlas’ask and Luchivik, you take the rear. Gaines, you stay near me. If you see anything bigger than a rat and it charges, shoot to kill.”

Uzen turned on his headlamp and pointed down the sewers into a pitch-black tunnel. Hendal sighed. It was going to be a bad day.

--- --- --- ---

After a while, Hendal was starting to get impatient. He needed action, and he highly doubted sewer hunting would give him the thrill of true combat. He had seen all of the old war holos, about the battles of Hoth and Endor. He really would have shined then. But of course he had to be stuck with a bunch of misfits, most of whom barely even knew how to hold a rifle, much less fire one. Hendal looked around in the sewer, watching as his late chased away shadows on the walls, only to give a deeper sense of dread as the shadows grew deeper and deeper. After some time, Uzen stopped them with an abrupt hand to the air. Hendal shook his head in disgust; what could it possibly be now?

“Do you guys hear that?”

Hendal looked at Uzen as if he was crazy. What noise could he possibly be talking about? But then after staring at him, he began to hear it too. Hendal began to wonder if he was going crazy too, but then it became slightly more audible. Was that… clanking? And why was it coming from behind the walls? Uzen seemed to realize it before anyone else.

“We have to move. Now!”

And with that, he jumped over a gap of water and sprinted across the duracrete walkway. The rest of the squad went after him. Hendal had a very strange look on his face. What could that have been about?

Spark crouched down behind Harem and tapped her on the shoulder. “Hey, your coming with us.” Harem looked up at him, her helmet was removed revealing her long-straight brunette  hair and bright green eyes, which showed the worry and fear that was deep down inside of her.

“Okay.” She replied, picking up her gear and following Spark and Davis out of the small room.

“Hey need any help with that stuff?” Spark asked, hoping she would at least say something to him. They had been friends since they met during training, and he had never seen her like this, it was odd.

“Naw, I'm fine.” Harem lied.

“Would you two cut the chatter, here, this is the room.” Davis ducked inside. The room was about the same size as the room they had just come from. Light greeted them as they entered the room, a window about two feet off the ground, and three feet-by-four feet, just enough room to duck under it and keep safe as well as throw grenades it was the perfect lookout point. “Alright, let's get set up.”

It took them thirty-minutes for them to set up, they didn't have much to do except make a permenant hole in the window to fire out of. “Alright here's the deal man, and woman. Spark and me will fire out of the window; Harem you will throw the grenade. Understood?”

“Understood.” Spark and Harem said  in unison. Harem giggled at it. It was nice to see her smile again, but both Spark and Davis knew that wouldn't last long.

“Alright, that's settled, get ready Candy squad will be here any second. so be prepared.”

Spark headed for the window. Putting his blaster up, Davis followed him, they were close together, but they still had enough room to maneuver and fire. Harem on the other hand stayed sitting down, she didn't need to do anything until the enemy was upon them, after all she just had to throw them.

“So you think they are called candy squad cause their armor is candy?” Spark said, realizing how lame the joke was when Davis turned and gave him the shut up look.

“Now's not the time for Lame joke's keep your eyes open.” Davis said.

Harem grinned as Spark looked at him. It was a sad attempt he knew, but she still understood his concern. She hadn't been the same for a long time, she tried to hide it through training, but it didn't work. She couldn't get the memories out of her head, and every passing moment that came was another worry, she had to figure out way to douse the worries, but she cared so much about Spark and her whole squad. I won't let you down, not this time.

“How much longer do you think?” Harem said, she had to get her mind off of everything going on inside of it.

Nobody responded, they all kept their eyes on the window,  “They're coming.” Spark said under his breath, not to anyone specific, but they all knew the truth, their enemy was almost upon them.

Uzen's blood was pumping now.

His squad was having a hard time keeping up with him, whether for fear of some dangerous situation, or just for the mere fact that they were in crappy condition.

By this time, everyone in Uzen's group had arrived at a similar conclusion.

A) Whatever blasted a hole in the side of the sewage pipe wasn't a dianoga.

B) Whatever blasted the hole in the side of the sewage pipe had company, and it was moving outside of the pipes, directly above them.

C) Directly above them was the waste treatment facility.

They ran as fast as their legs could carry them, still taking care not to fall in the putrid stream of water and solid waste coursing its way through the sewage pipe on its way to the cleaners.

Uzen fumbled with his communicator, and it almost slipped into the water. He grabbed hold as best as a man who was in a dead sprint could and hailed the sergeant.

"Detric, we have company! They came through the hole and they're in the facility! I repeat! They're in the facility!"

"They? what do you mean they?" Detric was confused. The fact that Uzen was huffing and puffing wasn't helping his comprehend the situation.

Then it hit him.

--- --- --- ---

Uzen's group came out of the sewage pipe, guns ready. Before they could take even a whiff of the untainted air, blaster rifle fire scorched the ground in front of them. Uzen, turned back with superhuman speed and grabbed ahold of Gaines and tossed him back into the safety of the sewage tunnel.

"What the hell was that?!" Gaines was flabbergasted.

Uzen didn't want to tell him. The last thing he needed was a handful of terrified soldiers, incapable of fighting back.

"Orda! Hail the sergeant. The rest of you, keep your wits about you. We just might get out of this jam alive."

Blake followed their squad leader down through the sewers. They moved swiftly through the sewers searching for any sign of a leakage or any unwanted pests. They smell made Blake retch slightly. He would've gotten sick if it hadn't been for his armour tight around his stomach. His helmet sat on his head the strap swinging loosely. He clutched his weapon in the position he'd been shown with the butt of his rifle pressed tightly against his shoulder.

They walked along the sewers in complete silence. Their squad leader never let anyone talk when on a mission set by command no matter how big or small, if it was trivial or had some importance. He always ordered complete silence unless it was giving orders to the squad or through the radio. He said conversation would cause a lapse in concentration which could be fatal on the battlefield.

Blake thought about this their squad leaders voice in his head. He tried to remember any advice his superiors gave him. The training and system of the New Republic military had churned him out as just another obedient soldier who was eager to move up the ranks while serving his planet.

"Sergeant, do you copy," they heard the voice over the squad radio followed by blaster fire,

"What's happening down there,"

"We're under heavy fire sir requesting assistance,"

"Roger that we're on our way, hold you position. Alright squad you heard them on the radio, they need help so lets move it,"

Blake ran after the rest of the group. This was the moment he had been waiting for. Finally some action, this is what he'd spent the past months training for. Blake psyched himself up for the inevitable combat and his first.

Gaines clung to his rifle for dear life. As it stood, he was between a sewage tunnel and a hard place. The blaster rifles pinged and panged against everything around him. The best he could force his petrified body to do was to blind fire a few rounds into the air, hoping to hit something.

Instead of deterring the enemy squad, it only made them angrier. They retaliated by intensifying their volly on their position.

"Where the hell is our backup!?" yelled Travias. His voice was almost muffled out by the sounds of blaster fire being exchanged in such cramped quarters.

"They'll be here shortly." Uzen was unusually calm. The adrenaline rush had died down and now he was able to think more clearly, and act more responsibly.

"Conserve your ammo. Wait to get a clear shot."

The blaster fire died down for just a brief amount of time. Uzen crossed his fingers and took advantage of the lull in action.
He peeped around the corner of the sewage pipe and caught a glimpse at their attackers.

IMPERIALS!, he thought to himself. Just an hour before he had dismissed the idea of an imperial attack on their water treatment facility as unrealistic, and now here he was.

He popped back into cover before anyone could notice him and slumped down to the ground, his back against the cold, hard concrete.

He motioned for Orda to come over and snatched the communicator out of his hand in one hostile movement. Orda stepped back and diverted his attention elsewhere.

"Detric... we have a situation here..."

"I know, i know. We're on our way to assi-" Detric sounded off before being interrupted by Uzen. "No, you don't understand. It's the imperials. Everyone in his group heard that ominous word and dropped whatever they were doing.

"Hm..." The sergeant replied. "We'll be right there. Exercise caution, team. I want you all in one piece when i get there."

"Aye, sir."

His group was talking amongst themselves, probably nervous about having to face a trained group of attackers. Most of them hadn't had much experience, or a whole lot of training for that matter.

Uzen didn't care. As long as they had the balls to do what he needed them to do, they'd work out just fine.

"Okay, Luchivik, Vla'ask, Orda. Fire on your three o' clock. The rest of you, come with me. We're sitting ducks in this damn tunnel. We're gonna have to make a run for the control room."

He paused to think the next phase of his plan through.

"When we've cleared the control room, i'll give the signal and Luchivik can bring up the rear. Am i clear?!" He got a somewhat enthusiastic response from his group. They were nervous, but they would fight if he commanded them.

"Alright, on my mark."

Uzen gave the signal to open fire, but it proved useless. Absolut Squad was nearby but not where Candy thought. The signal had however given Absolut the advantage. When they heard the blaster shots, they decided against keeping the hostages safe. They decided to use the hostages as a human shield. Aleema in particular felt badly about this because she had spent so much time talking with the man who could only think of his wife and children and how she assured him that he wouldn't die.

"I thought it would come to this." said the scientist.

"If we are right, they won't shoot." Aleema assured him once again.

"And if you're wrong?"

Aleema had no answer. She knew all too well that there was a good chance the New Republic could open fire on the captives. There was also a good chance things could go as planned. I refuse to believe that this world is devoid of all hope. Whether for good or bad, there is always hope: and in that hope lies the chance that things will go as planned. After all if there is no hope, then what would be the use of anything? I...just....refuse....

Candy Squad figuring that Uzen wasn't completely off and came charging into the room to find Absolut Squad holding the hostages in front of them as a shield.

"Cowards!" yelled one of the hostages. "Let us go! We're not part of your fight!"

"Shut your mouth!" Shouted Spark. "Do as your told. You're serving a greater good."

"So...you must be the infamous Candy Squad." said Chase as he addressed the "intruders". "We've been expecting you since our new friends here told us about you. I'll offer you a trade: their lives for our mission."

Detric scratched his head. "So...you'll let them live if we agree to allow you to posion the water supply? I don't think so!"

Absolut squad looked shocked. How was it that Candy Squad knew their mission? There must be a traitor amoung them they began thinking. But who was it? Detric looked at their shock and decided to continue taunting.

"Ah yes...we know you're little secret. Poison the water supply but don't drink it yourselves so you won't be prone to suggestion....brilliant plan I must say but doomed to failure. At any rate this is what I think of your generous offer."

Detric went to shoot the scientist that Aleema had become quite fond of, but Aleema had gone soft while treating him and decided to honor her promise. Aleema had knocked the man sideways so the blaster bolt missed him, but it hit Aleema dead on. Aleema dropped to her knees from the hit, but was just hanging on. Detric took advantage of the situation and shot once more.

The scientist recovered and ran over to Aleema. She was struggling to stay alive...but she had to. She barely had enough energy left to do it, but she wearily gave the man back what he had given her. "T....this belongsssss......to.....you." she said with the last of her strength and died on the floor.

"How touching" Detric said with no sympathy. "Maybe next time you imperials won't be so clever with human lives. Now....do you want to try a different plan or maybe you think we still won't shoot just because we value life? Trust me...I know what it takes to succeed in a mission and I am by no means afraid of doing whatever it takes for us to succeed."

This was when the scientist spoke up. He had tears rolling down his cheeks. "You...MONSTER!" he cried and took a thermal detenator from his pocket. "I always have one on hand....not even they knew about it. This was the one person who seemed HUMAN to me in a long while of dealing with Imperials. And you...you killed her." The scientist armed the detonator and tossed it at the Candy Squad hoping that his efforts were not in vein. He knew it would only kill one if he was lucky. What he was actually hoping for was for some wall to collapse to buy the Imperials some precious time to either prepare or release them (which he very much doubted would happen even if he got lucky...he had a feeling the walls were too strong). If he was wrong though....Aleema would have sacrificed her life for nothing. He had to flee he knew it, and he hoped that his gesture would buy his loyalties with the Imperials and they would let him flee to save his life. Either way, things looked ill for the scientist...

"Everyone, back off" Chase ordered "Scientists too"

No one was brave enough to argue, and ever so slowly, everyone inched back against the far wall. A number of times they fell out of their cover, but Candy never fired. There was a man sat in front of them with a thermal detonator, and he was already on edge. Kortax positioned himself next to Chase.

"What do we do? This is bad" He whispered

"Squad, listen up" Chase responded, as if ignoring Kortax completely "Once he throws that detonator, it's probably going to cave in that wall. We might get lucky and it kills them all, but its unlikely. Kill every one of them that is unlucky enough to fall this side and still be alive, then run. Clear?"

Chase had a remarkable knack of being able to talk loudly enough so that everyone he wants to hear him can, and the people he doesn't want hearing cant. And by the looks of it, Candy squad hadn't heard him, they still all had their eyes fixed on the detonator.

A flick of the wrist and the plan changed entirely. The grenade landed just in front of chases feet, but it happened so fast he didn't see who threw it. Acting instinctively, he jumped to his feet and kicked the grenade towards Candy. It followed the perfect path in the air along, Chase thanked his lucky stars for all those months he'd spent in the local soccer team. It only made it halfway though, and exploded somewhere over the middle terminal, sending sparks and pieces of machinery flying everywhere. The scientist panicked and threw the thermal detonator towards Candy, who dived for cover out back towards the sewer. The blast seemed to swallow up the entire squad, but he couldn't be sure of that.

"Is everyone okay!?" Kortax shouted, staggering to his feet. Everyone was moving, that was the first good sign. Some of the scientists seemed to be a little dazed, and some had a few cuts from the debris, but they were fire. Absolut squad, remarkably, were completely unharmed.

"Guys lets move, they could be back any second. Lets get to the roof and signal the base" Chase called, running out of the room.

Elara nodded towards Chase, her heart racing as she got up from her knees. Davis looked towards Elara.

“You okay to carry on?” He questioned concerned.

“Yeah, I’ll be fine” she replied, trying to catch her breath back from her near death experience.

The squad quickly got up to their feet and sprinted to a near by door. They were light on their feet so no one could tell where they were heading off to. The door seemed to be locked; it was containing some special water samples, so the door was clamped down and needed a key to get in. Chase elbowed his way to the front.

“What’s the hold up guys?”

“Sir, the door seems to be locked” Kortax pointed to the closed door.

“Nonsense!”

Chase quickly checked the door over by tapping it. He then took a deep breath and ran full pelt in to the hard heavy door. His foot slammed into the weakest point in the door and caused it to fly off its hinges and land with a thud on the floor, causing dust particles to fly in all directions from the floor.

“Nothing to it guys, now quickly, we need to get up to the roof!”

The whole squad in unison nodded and ran through the room they just broke into. The room was filled with test tubes in holders containing different colour dyes and colour charts over the walls. It seemed to be some sort of testing area; the squad didn’t hang around the long room for long for they had reached a stair well.

“We must be on the right track, come on, up you go, before the other find out where we are”

The stairwell was narrow and winding, they had to go up one by one, and each step was getting steeper and steeper. The sound of the clanging on the metal steps became louder and louder as each squad member began climbing this everlasting mountain as it seemed. One by one, they pacing was getting slower, they just couldn’t keep to Chase’s pace, he was in the zone, and no one could break him out of it.

Private Alexis was crying, every step of the way up the stairwell she was crying, hurting in her heart She told everything to the scientist, Marcus, who had survived the blast and wanted out of this hellhole, and insisted on following them out of this hellhole and into a safe haven, he explained everything to the squad seriously while running after them, handing the box to Alexis:

“The two had been friends, best friends, and lovers even, Alexis admired Alema’s life of a protector, but Alema sometimes even admired Alexis’ life of a free woman with whatever she wanted to do, when she wanted to do it, and a happy, unsorrowful life. But Alexis never thought so, her brothers were the cruelest relatives in the world, they’d beat her around and make use of her as a heartless joke or a punching bag they can punch around. Soon the brother even become traitors of their own Empire and sold Alema’s mother out for the kill, the reason being that she had protected too much, even people from the Republic, whom she believed to be influential to the cause. A peace deal, she wanted, between the divided factions of the Empire and a ceasefire treaty with the Republic, diplomatic talks, you get my meaning. Alema was the successor for it, the successor for protection and peace, and Private Alexis’ first name, Aola, was the flower for it, these two were the peacekeepers of our time and the greatest sisters that were able to get along and fall in love. Life hit them hard, but life picked them back up. Alexis, I’ll let you take this.”

“You don’t have to, you don’t. All she wanted was peace before she died peacefully that was her only wish, not peace for her, but peace for the entire galaxy. I don’t know what else I can say, we were as close as Marcus says, sisters, and we gotten through the worst of times with prayer and hope, no wonder my parents gave me the first name that meant flower, flower is the first life that opens its leaves to shine to the sun in Spring, and Spring is the sign of hope, hope for all of the galaxy that wars may end and people may come together in harmony.” Alexis finished, resisting taking the box, for it reminded her of Alema, but under the moving story, the squad helped persuade Alexis to take the box, her tears dripping onto the box.

Alexis had pats on her shoulders and words of comfort from everyone as she ran up the stairs to the roof, and it was everyone, including Chase, David, Harvey, the people who wouldn’t usually show sympathy and remorse. Alexis looked at the body of Alema that she insisted on taking back to her father, the blaster bolts that hit her and made her die, the bastard who did it with no heart, firmed her stand on peace, for war had cost too much lives, too much hatred, no love, not even in the Republic, where once Alexis had embraced, had met a cold and marblehearted man like that bastard who’d killed Alema, had married him and have a child, what would Alema think of it, what good would it be on her memory. Although at the moment, as if Alema were guiding her, she spoke as if she was still here, an angel, in her mind:

Alexis, don’t cry now, I forgive for what you’ve done, you don’t have to cry now, I know why you didn’t want to tell me, you thought I’d hate you, well, when I found out about it on my own. They all do this for the success of the mission and the prosperity of their Republic, nothing else, we cannot ultimately change it, but we can try, we can try, we just gotta have faith. For faithless is he that says farewell when the road darkens.

Alexis then heard that sign of hope from Kortax, who had now started a war cry for them:

    “For Alema!

“FOR ALEMA!” Alexis was the first to respond, for it was the only thing in which she could do to commorate her life sacrifice, to honor that would have to be to live life as if every day is another precious one. The whole squad yelled it all the way as they made their way up the stairwell, encouraging them to fight on for her peaceful cause.

Harem gunned her way up the stairs, trying to keep up with every pace. Her hand was shaking from the events that had just unfolded before her. She had tried to keep a straight head about it, but she knew she couldn't. Alema was dead.

The whole squad was trying to get up as fast as the could, their every step was fueled with escape. Spark just wanted this nightmare to be over, he could tell by the look on Chase's face that things weren't going as he would have liked them to, but that was thing about War, things could change in an instant.

Something made Spark look back, Harem was running trying to keep up,but her shaking held her down. He just wanted to hold her and let her know it was alright, but this wasn't the time or the place. He just let it go and put his eyes back in front of him.

Harem kept running, trying to  keep up with Spark who had also ended up near the end, but she knew she wasn't going to keep up for long. She would be left behind if she didn't control herself and fast. Come on,it's over, leave it go. She couldn't, she had watched Alema die. Just like everyone else, what's so different about you? She just wanted this nightmare to be over.

Spark paced himself, they were nearing the top. He couldn't wait to get up these stairs and just take a breather before having to run again. Just th thought of having to run continuously was enough to make him want to stop right there.

“Spark, I...” Harem's voice made it's way to Spark's ears, regardless of the loud pounding of stairs that was also making it hard to hear.

He looked back to see her three stairs down and shaking. “Harem, get up we don't have time.”

“Hurry up were almost there.” Chaser's voice came in between there chattering, but it was true the just had a little further to go.

“I'm sorry, I just can't deal with it anymore.” Harem said, ignoring what Chase has said.

Spark ignored what she had just said, he was already moving towards her. If had to he would drag her up the stairs by force. “Come one, were almost up.”

Harem just looked at him. She didn't care they were all going to die here anyway. “Spark, forget it were going to die.”

“We are if you just site there, come one.” He held out his hand, mostly to help her the rest of the way,but partly as a comforting gesture. She looked up, her face was red, but she accepted the hand anyway. She couldn't help it, but a smile spread across her face, while her shaking stopped. “Glad to have you back Harem”

They both ran up the stairs to catch up. As they did they could see Chase looking back to make sure everyone was with them.

“Hang in there, just a little further to go.” Chase said, a grin spreading across his face. Revenge was coming.

Alexis saw the look of revenge across Chase’s face as they made their way to the top, she never liked the idea of revenge, but it gave the people murdered the sense of peace and happiness in afterlife, so for Alema’s peace and happiness, she would kill that bastard of a sarge. Alexis saw that Harem was being escorted by Spark quite quickly up the stairs with red on her face. Look at that face, you’d think that girl liked him or something, that’s the shiest face I have ever seen in my life. Alexis wondered as she too smiled and brushed away the tears on her face.

“One more flight of stairs, come on, guys, we’re nearly there.” Chase encouraged the squad, hurrying on as the squad made their way to the roof, which looked upon to the city walls and the forests they had come from. People were going about their everyday life, still unaware of what was happening inside the complex, while Alexis rested a bit along with the rest of the squad, sweat running down their faces along with her.

“Candy squad won’t be far behind, I doubt that little explosion would kill them all, maybe only hurt them a bit. Everyone, prepare yourselves and take cover. Davis, keep a watch on the stairs, if there’s any movement, get back here and report to me. I’ll need to call base for supplies and support.” Chase said orderly as Alexis took cover along with the squad, readying their rifles on the only entrance to the roof. Alexis then heard Chase relay to base, sending the coordinates along on his datapad:

“Base, this is Chase. We are under attack from highly-trained NR squad and requesting backup and supplies at the location being sent to you right there. Also, we request evac for a scientist named Marcus who wants safe passage to a location which only he knows.”

“Understood, we will send supplies along ASAP, as for backup, we’ll see. And about that man you have there, well, we have orders to evac him through the Vengence, don’t ask me why, they have connections with Admiral Thrawn, apprenately they saved him from an assassin, and it’s true also, odd...” Alexis felt a sense of familiarity at this response and then it came to her who it was when she saw Chase switch to a private channel when he heard the incoming call and heard that all too familiar voice that belonged to Shakka, who waved and smiled at them from the cockpit of the Vengence, a Modular Taskforce Crusier landed on the roof, replying to Chase’s unbelievable shock at the modified cruiser:

“Hello, Alexis, nice to see you again, hope you can make it out alive, Pampy is very worried about Alema, is that her?” Alexis saw a look of shock, horror and pain on her face as she confirmed Shakka’s fears:

“Tell her Alema died by the squad leader of an NR squad named Candy, I have her body right here to prove it, as you’ve already have seen. She can rest easy, knowing you’ll send her to her family. Marcus, take this to Pampy and tell her she died to save you, she died for a good cause.” With a strong and firm voice, trying hard not to cry, she handed the dead body of Alema, holding her E-11 rifle, to Marcus, who got on the cruiser by the deck that opened for him, which closed quickly. After that the cruiser took off into space with goodbyes and promise of getting back safely, although Alexis wasn’t sure if she was going to with Alema dead.

“Alexis, quite the team you have here, I’m proud.” Chase commented, still looking shocked and confused at what just happened. Yeah, you should be confused, I was even shocked to meet someone that great, and I don’t mean just normal great, I mean the more higher great. Alexis thought, smiling as she continued to wait for Candy squad, rifle ready.
