Helena Leucine
Medic Spec
Story 1: First Aid
“Ah, Miss Leucine is it?” A strange voice asked.

“Uh, yes, yes it is” Helena replied.

“Good, take your seat towards the left side of the room please.” The odd looking teacher said, frantically waving her hand towards a broken, mite bitten desk.

The room was large, but the amount of people contained in it made it look compact. The windows were steamed up with perspiration, the pupils had obviously been stressing about the upcoming events. The walls seemed to be glowing a lime green colour, and it was filled with medical posters containing lots of information about Trauma incidents and how to deal with them.

Helena smiled to her neighbouring classmate sat in the next desk as she sat down. Helena sighed as she took one look at the miserable desk.

“Why me…” She mumbled to herself.

“Right, settle down please. Once I put these papers down, you may begin”

Helena began scanning the paper for obvious questions that she knew. The first question baffled her.

‘What should your first priorities be when you see someone that appears to be unconscious?’

Helena put her hand to her forehead in frustration. She knew this; she just had to think what it was. Then she remembered back to when she was in training…

Helena was on her way to the training grounds when she came across someone that appeared to be lying on the cold, concrete floor. Helena quickly made her way to them, making sure she didn’t cause a scene.

“Hello? Could you tell me your name please?”

There was no response. Helena quickly went through in her head what she should do next. The ABC technique was the first thing that came to her mind from her training.  Helena needed to make sure the person’s airway was open. She slowly but gently placed one hand on the person’s forehead and gently tipped back his head, lifting his chin. Helena had to make sure his tongue hadn’t rolled back. Luckily it hadn’t, so she carried on with treating her patient. She next placed her cheek by the patient’s mouth. She looked for movement on his chest, there was nothing. She then moved her cheek closer to his mouth, she wanted to make sure feel a breath greet her cheek. Unfortunately, that didn’t happen either. Helena immediately rang for an ambulance, as she did she began to think about Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation. She began delivering 30 chest compressions in the middle of the chest, pressing the heel of her hand. She knew if she was doing that, she was helping the blood circulate around the body. After 30 compressions she followed that up with 2 rescue breaths. She had to maintain that the airway was kept clear, so she pinched the patient’s nose, she then placed her mouth over the patient’s mouth, and she began slowly blowing steadily. She made sure her blowing only lasted a second each time. She continued to do this until the ambulance came.

Helena’s pen began scribbling across the exam paper. The answer seemed pretty simple from her previous experience.

“Now onto the next question, right let’s see” She mumbled to herself quietly,

“What sort of thing would you be asked to do if you encounter an accident?”

Helena mumbled to herself for a moment before thinking in her head.

“Well, I know that first you have to check if there is any danger around the accident, then, once everything is clear, you are free to check for people injured. I need to then evaluate the concerning people injured, paying close attention to people who may seem quiet. I need to treat the quiet ones first, making sure their survival is assured.”

Helena coughed before thinking again.

“The three P’s! Of course! Preserve life by making sure everyone survives; prevent further injuries by making sure those whose injuries could worsen get treated first, and promote recovery by making sure I do all I can to stop bleedings and pain if possible.”

Helena once again began scribbling across the page. Her hand began to ache at this point, but she knew she had to finish this exam to even consider passing on to become a medic.  The course was hard, but she managed it. She had the help she needed, and she got through the basics. She longed to continue to become a medic, she loves helping people, and it showed during her training. Helena seemed to do particularly in the area of talking to patients and relatives. It was just her personality that made people smile and made them feel that everything was going to be okay.

Helena shook her head from her daydream and continued with her exam.

”You encounter an individual, who has been badly burned in a fire. How would you go about treating him?”

Helena again, placed her hand on her forehead in frustration, and began thinking about the contents of a first aid kit, and what she could use within it.

”Come on Helena! Focus for god’s sake! What do you do with burns like this? And hurry it up! This guy’s in pain over here!”

Helena panicked. She grabbed the first aid kit and began rummaging through the contents.

“Right, I know I need gloves to stop infection, the antiseptic wipes to clean the wound, Sterilised pads to reduce risk of infection again, crepe bandages to dress the wound and adhesive micro tape to secure the bandage in place.” She thought to herself.

“Right, I’m Private First Class Helena Leucine; I’m here to help you. You just need to calm down whilst I treat you.”

Helena smiled towards the injured patient before getting her gloves on. She quickly unpacked the antiseptic wipes and began lightly brushing it over the burn. She then grabbed the Sterilised pads and un-wrapped them; she took one and placed it on the burn.

“Here! Hold this!” She ordered the teacher, who looked speechless at the time.

Helena grabbed a roll of crepe bandages and began cutting it to size; she quickly bandaged the burn tightly and secured it in place with adhesive micro tape.

“There, that should hold it.” She smiled,

“T-Thank you”

‘I would apply water to the burn, if none is present, apply an antiseptic wipe, and then pack it up with sterilised pads to ensure no infection is spread. Then I would apply a crepe bandage and secure in place with adhesive micro tape.’ She wrote, feeling rather proud of herself.

“There, that should do it” Helena mumbled and smiled to herself, looking very pleased and satisfied with her answer.

She gazed up to the clock to see how much time he had left, just as she was doing so the bell rang.

“Right, I need all papers to be passed to the front and I need you all to remain seated, once all papers are collected at the end, you may then leave. I shall keep you noted on your marks”

“Thanks Miss”

Story 2 - Bacta Therapy

Helena gazed at the Bacta tank, there was a slim, slender female inside, and wearing the ugliest white gown you have ever seen. Not that she would care about her appearance, with her being in that tank.

“Right Helena,” Came a voice, submerging from the shadows of the closet in the next room.

It was Dr. Tregor; she was your typical everyday stereotype of a doctor. She had a white lab coat, a seriously excessive amount of pens overflowing her right pocket of her lab coat, she's always seen with her clipboard in her left hand and carried a pocket watch in her pocket.

Helena smiled as she saw the Doctor walk in. To her relief, Dr. Tregor would be explaining her training to her. She looked up to the Doctor; it was her dream to become a fully qualified medic.

“As I was saying” She coughed lightly before briefly looking over her notes made on her clipboard.

“I’m here to train you about the wonderful world of Bacta therapy. Do you know anything about it?” She smiled lightly, looking up from her half circle spectacles.

Helena’s heart was racing as she was put on the spot for some answers. She coughed before answering.

“Bacta therapy is when a patient has some serious injuries and they need to be healed. The Bacta tank is used for more serious injuries, where as normally on a battle field; bacta patches are used as a quick and easier way of getting the bacta to heal the severe lacerations. The patient could die of blood loss if they don’t get the Bacta in. The patches are easy to use, and quick if you are on the move. As well as treating external injuries, the injections can treat the internal.”

Helena smiled to herself, very pleased with her answer. She had been studying before today. She wanted to impress the Doctor.

“Very good Helena! You surely have studied hard! One thing I need to check you know is though, what exactly is Bacta?”

Helena knew this; it was on the tip of her tongue.

“Bacta was a synthetic chemical substance that consisted of gelatinous, translucent red alazhi and kavam bacterial particles that were mixed within a colorless, viscous fluid known as ambori.”

“Very good!”

Dr. Tregor gracefully walked over to the Bacta tank. The tank was big in size, bronze and chrome fittings and fixtures, thick long tubes intertwining the tank. And the woman was still in there.

“This is Legora; she has severe internal organ damage. She unfortunately, got caught in crossfire and got hit. She’s been in the tank for a few days now. She should be ready to come out in a few more hours. She’ll be fine; she was one of the lucky ones. “

Helena gazed back to the tank. The woman seemed dead, just hanging there, trying to recover.

“I-I’m glad she’s going to be alright” She said, in a sympathetic tone.

“So are we, we thought she was a goner” She laughed lightly, giving her clipboard to a passing droid.

“Thank you, Mistress”

“Anyway, as I was saying. I need you to type in this new person’s details. He’s male, of course, around 200lb, aged around 21, severe lacerations and internal bleeding and injuries to the left lung, heart and also the stomach.”

“O-Of course, I’ll do that right away”

Helena typed in the information at the data pad. It beeped a few times before a droid came to assess what she was doing.

“Oh! Hello, I’m only here for training”

“I’m droid 217, nice to meet you. I can tell you’re new here, you’re entering the information all wrong.” The droid mumbled.

“I’m sorry?”

“You better be, let me do it” The droid snapped.

Helena took a step back and let the droid continue his work.

“Now Helena,” Dr Tregor announced.

“You need to know that we must keep all patients in the tanks under close supervision at all times. I repeat, ALL TIMES

“Yes Dr. Tregor” Helena nodded in understanding.

“The bacta can cause unwanted cell tissue growth, causing such diseases as Cancer. We don’t want that now do we Helena?”

“Oh no, of course not”

“Exactly, right, I think I’ve covered everything for your training. I expect to see you in the exam room in exactly 2 hours. Swat up before you enter”

Helena nodded once more before leaving the lab.

---------------------- 2 Hours Later ----------------------------------------------------

Helena brushed herself off before entering that dull classroom once more, she hated it in there…

“I wish someone would upgrade this room already” She mumbled to herself before taking her seat.

“You may start as soon as I put the paper on your desks” The small strange Professor added.

Helena began writing reams and reams. She felt her hand beginning to ache by the end of the final page of the exam.

She was happy it was over. She sat in silence as she watched the other students finish off frantically writing their answers.

“You may remain seated until I say so”

Story 3 - Pathology (humanoid)

The loud echoing sound of Helena’s alarm clock rang around the sleeping quarters. It had been for the last 15 minutes. To Helena’s surprise she was actually late. She had to make her way around the campus and into the simulation room in the space of 20 minutes, which she knew was impossible.

It was impossible enough to get Helena out of the door in 40 minutes, let alone 20. She had no time to lose, she quickly hopped to her feet, slipping into her combats and sliding her shoes on. She had no time to sort her hair out so she just tied it up into a ponytail. With that she sprinted out of the door, turning every corner tight, trying to make as many shortcuts as possible. She finally reached the out building, noticing someone was already tapping their foot in disgust.

“I’m so sorry; I’m only a bit late aren’t I?” She panted, holding her side from the pain.

“Just don’t let it happen again Miss Leucine” The woman smiled, taking Helena by the arm showing her in the building.

“Now, I trust you know what to do, I did send you a message last night to swat up”

Helena’s face went blank, she didn’t even bother checking her messages she was in such a rush.

“Yes, but remind me again?” She wiped her brow from the bead of sweat.

“Just enter the simulation and it’ll refresh your memory”

With that, the woman pushed Helena in, closing the door tightly behind her. Helena found herself in a doctor’s waiting room. It was filled with people sat on chairs, coughing and sneezing, and the odd doctor or two running around with notes in their hand. One caught Helena’s eye, he had dropped his file and paper seemed to spraying across the floor as if there had been a paper bomb. Helena crouched down to help him.

“Ah! You’re Helena! We’ve been expecting you!”

“Y-You have?” She stumbled.

“Yes, we’re swamped here. Any chance you could help us out in one of our diagnosis rooms? I could seriously do with the help”

Helena nodded firmly, and then smiled.

She entered an off room to the left of the waiting area. There were a pile of patient notes stacked on an over crowded desk.

“You only have to see a few people, just until the rush hour stops”

With that the man left, sending in the first person.

It was a female, middle aged and complained of stomach cramps. First Helena had her explain how much pain she was in before getting her to lay down on the examining table. As the woman lay flat, Helena pressed lightly into her pressure points, trying to work out if there were any abnormalities lurking around inside her. Helena found nothing. She then began to work her fingers into her abdomen. All of a sudden the woman wretched in pain.

“I’m sorry, didn’t mean to hurt you. According to your symptoms, you have signs of gastritis. I’ll write you up some antibiotics and I suggest plenty of bed rest” She smiled politely.

The woman smiled back, taking the paper and heading out the door. The sound of footsteps grew closer and stopped by the door. This was followed by a knock.

“Come in and sit yourself down. What seems to be the problem?”

“I’ve come up in a rash all over my arms 3 days ago. I’m not sure what it could be. It’s rather itchy to.”

Helena sighed to herself, before gently taking his arm and rolling up his shirt sleeves. She lightly rubbed her finger over the bumps of red skin. It wasn’t inflamed much; it just seemed to go once her cold hands hit it.

“It seems to be a heat rash, I’ll send you home with some cool acting gel to soothe the pain and also reduce the bumps. I suggest you keep using it until the tube is out, and that you stay in the shade until it stops” She smiled.

“Thank you Doc”

Helena found herself teleported to the receptionist desk again. She was thanked by the staff before finding herself once again exiting the simulation doors.

“Good work Helena; I’ll message you with the results”

OOC:
Good work here, very refreshing to see proper spelling and grammar after some of the stuff I've read lately. Now that you are moving out of level one, I hope to see your specs become a little longer.  Shouldn't be too hard for you to hit another 300 words or extra if not more.  Good luck and I look forward to the next one.  Need any help or ideas, feel free to toss me a line, I'm a medic myself. ~Doc
