Alexandre Tormak had perhaps the most laughable job in the entire Vast
Empire. His colleagues talk of his branch in hushed tones behind
Tormak's back. The man was whispered in barracks to be crazy. Right now
though he was perfectly sane, staring at the papers piled on his steel,
government issue desk in pure boredom. He hated this part of the job,
he urged to be in the field, tracking the species he has spent the last
ten years of his life searching for.
"Major Tormark? It's Kevin." The holo-phone sitting beside his caf mug
turned itself on, that was not usually a good sign.
"Speaking, what you need Captain?" Alexandre acknowledge his partner,
Captain Kevin Chelsy.
"Can you get down to tech room on the third floor? I got something
that might be of interest to you, they called me up to see it."
Sighing as he got out of the steel chair, Alexandre figured he was in
for another false alarm just like every case for the past ten years,
"Sure I'll be there in a little bit." Flicking the switch to end the call
he rubbed his palms against his forehead.
Figures that they call
Chelsy first, he wasn't "crazy" about intergalactic aliens.
"What do we have, another old lady seeing things?" Alexandre
referenced last week's call.
"Actually no," Kevin shook his head, "I hate to say it... but we got a
distress message that fits your..." Tormak's partner reflected for a
moment on the right word. "...research perfectly."
Alexandre's eyes lit up instantly, "Species X?" He looked like a child
holding a large present that must certainly hold the gift he wanted all
his life.
"It would be better if you see it yourself," Kevin nodded to a tech
sitting at a consol, who brushed his long brown hair back and started to
pull up the video clip. "We received a distress call from an abandoned
Imperial listening post on Rhen Var, apparently the emergency comms
relay was still activated there. It was coded with an old Imperial
distress code from the Galactic Civil War era. Just watch."

The screen flickered a little bit, then a man about forty years with
fiery red hair appeared on screen. "This thing on? Looks like it...
Ahem. This is Ryan Dante of Omega Corp, my group and I were
scouting Rhen Var until we were attacked by a species I cannot identify; they
were humanoid, but very different. My party currently has sixteen
dead, twelve critically wounded. Only myself and Nylander are unharmed.
Over the last three weeks, we ran from the threat and defended ourselves
against weapons I have never encountered in my military career."
"Clank!"
Ryan span around, "What was that? Nylander check it out." On the left
side of the screen a twenty something blond male readied his repeating
rifle and headed down a flickering corridor.
"Anyways," Ryan lowered his pistol, "these weapons were very unusual.
I was able to grab one.." He held up a stick that appeared to be
covered in a lumpy green fungus, "It seems to be organic, but I know..."
"CLANK!"
Nylander came back into view, "Sir, they are about to breack the outer
blast doors!"
"Damn it, Fredrick, turn this thing off. Everyone else, take up
defensive positions. For the Republic!"
The screen suddenly blacked out
Transmission Lost//
Alexandre was nodding slowly, "Organic weapons, exactly what every
dependable sighting reports." He took a moment to think before turning to
the tech, "Can you replay that and pause at a certain point?" The man
sitting at the consol nodded. "Pause it right after the first clank."
Kevin looked at the screen unsure of why his partner requested that
point rather than a pause on the strange weapon.
"Zoom in on the window in the upper right."
Everyone in the room except Alexandre jumped back from the sinister
face that appeared on the screen.
A small smile escaped from the Major's lips, "Chelsy, this is it.
Follow our Gamma procedure. That is pick up our usual team and whatever
professionals you can from the nearest barracks. We leave from a shuttle
on our roof in an hour. I will get the equipment."
Kevin Chelsy jogged into the Storm Barracks and flashed his ID at the
nearest receptionist. He then ran into the lounge area where five
troopers were relaxing.
"Attention! I need you to come with me NOW!"
"What is this about?" The tallest stormtrooper demanded, Chelsy glanced
at his name plate,
"Jelly Bean"
Kevin flashed his badge, "IBI, no time to explain. I also outrank you
Corporal. You five are needed for a critical mission. You will
be briefed en route by Major Tormak."
Wicket looked confused, not an easy feat for a Sullustan, "ISB?"
Chelsy smiled politely, his patience growing thin, "Imperial B of
Investigation. If you will come with me
now it would be appreciated.
Your platoon leader will be made aware of your absence."
Seeing no way out except by refusal to follow a direct order and thus
be court-martialed, the five Storm Platoon members rose from the their
table to grab their equipment.
"Where are
you going?" Kevin bellowed, his patience gone.
"We need our equipment, don't we?" Tanus moved slightly behind Alan.
"It will be provided, now FOLLOW ME! The safety of the galaxy is at
risk!" With that the Captain stomped out of the room and the members of
Storm Platoon shuffled nervously after him.
"Only six Chelsy? Well I will take whatever I can get," Alexandre
paced the shuttle, now speeding away from Tadath. "I am Major Alexandre
Tormak, IBI, head of the Y-files branch." He saw the confused looks and
sighed. "What I do is investigate unexplained phenomenon. When our
calls are not false alarms, I have evidence of an intergalactic species
infiltrating our galaxy waiting for the right moment to attack." Their
faces all contained an expression very familiar to Tormak. "Yes, I may
seem crazy, but one day you will see, trust me. And if I'm not, I got
you a little vacation." The major looked about and tried to break the
ice, "How many from Eclipse here?"
Two raised their hands. "Nice, I did some work with your ASL once,
Riqimo's a nice fellow. He doesn't think I'm
crazy."
Jelly looked straight at the commanding officer in the eye, "Sir, it
would be appreciated if we knew what we were doing."
"Straight to the point, eh? Fine. I have video evidence of what is an
unidentified species using unknown weapons on Rhen Var. Nothing in the
Imperial Databank makes a match even remotely. Here, see the video."
He nodded to a short man leaning against the shuttle's cold steel wall,
"That's Lance Corporal Tobis Sherman, he's our Tech expert. Tobby,
show them the clip."
Tobis grinned as he tossed six data pads out, "Boosting their security
clearance Major?"
"We are outside Imperial jurisdiction now, what I say is now law."
Tobis shrugged and hooked the data pads up to another datapad and
uploaded the clip.
... ... ...
"See?" Tormak was grinning, "Now this Ryan Dante fellow, he is a
former Rebel/NR Captain, now working in private sector. He is not our
target; the unknown species is. But in case we bump into his group, we
obviously cannot be wearing snowtrooper armor. Instead I have suits
similar to the ones the Rebels used on Hoth. No heat unit, but still warm.
Weapons are simple as well, anything too heavy and you will be sweating
a lot. Only Corporal Sandoval here," he pointed to a Corellian
cleaning an ESPO Missile Launcher, "will be carrying anything of significant
weight. He is our Heavy Weapons professional."
Douglas Sandoval cracked a wry smile, "I got a nice flamer in case you
folks get cold."
Alexandre ignored the remark and continued his speech, "As for the rest
of my IBI team, we have Agen Lopate piloting our shuttle right now. He
is a Bothan and does Special Forces operations frequently. Also Ralph
Brooking is in the corner over there sleeping at the moment."
The Six stormtroopers turned their heads to see a young man hugging a
sniper rifle while snoring softly.
"Any questions?"
"Err... What are
we doing?" Luckystar asked.
"You are coming with us as extra firepower. You are stormies you can
take whatever's gonna be thrown at you. Anyways, let's follow Sergeant
Brooking's example, it's a long ride." Tormak grinned as he tossed
everyone a Backpack, "Blankets, tent pieces, winter gear, weapons,
rations, flares, a small medkit, and everything else you may need is stuffed
in here."
With that, Tormak walked over to the only bunk on the ship and went to
sleep almost instantly.
