  Lucky's Amazing Story

(This is partly for practice and partly because I wanted to write my own)

When Lucky's parents found out that they were expecting a child. they didn't know how special and different she was going to be.
Her mother's name was Joanne. Her father's Yves. When they found out that their child wich was later determined to be a girl would have multiple anomalies. The doctors had more unanswered questions than they wanted to admit. They didn't know if the girl would be a vegetable, born-dead or perfectly normal.

They didn't really have to wait long. In order to survive their daughter had to be born one month premature. They decided to give her the name of the first female pilot. Because she was special. She was born with Hydrocephaly also known as water on the brain. She would have many difficulties learning, they said,. Wich was partially true. Her speech center was affected , so was her short-term memory and thinking abilities. (Math) She had to spend the first two weeks of her life in ICU (Intensive Care Unit) . She had a surgery to place a shunt in a brain (three plastic piecess inserted in the body to pump excess fluid out of the brain) It consists of three parts. A thin tube inserted in the brain itself, near the ventricles in my case, a valve wich is attached to the thin tube and the skull. You need to have a hole made in your skull to insert it. And a long tube wich led from the valve to her stomach.

A few months later she got gravely sick. The doctors wouldn't listen to her mom who said that her shunt was broken. They said it was the stomach flu, until during the night at midnight precisely. She turned blue and practically died in her mother's arms. The doctors brough ther back to life, scanned her, and realised that her mother was right.

Joanne got really mad and ever since then her speech imapirment switched to a visual impairment (the doctors had to put me in a coma and told my parents that i wouldn't be the same)

For the next four years of her life she would be admitted to the hospital more than 250 times. During that time she would be administered anti-seizure medication wich made her agressiva and at 16 months she finally learned to walk by wich time she had a younger brother.

Her parents found it hard, because she would have migraines almost every night , make her brother cry so much he woud spit up his milk. It would go on like thais for six nights out of seven.

Her mother went to go see the psychiatrist and the psych said that Lucky would get used to it and stop the tantrums sometime.  The tantrums stopped when she was two years old. They still had to keep the mattress nailed to her door, just in case and so that she would not hurt herself.

At the age of five and nine she had to get her shunt replaced. When she was nine they left the old one in because it was calcified and put one that only had a 20% chance of breaking down. During her primary school years she went to a special school in kindergarten, went to a school for the blind when she was in second grade. And went back to ordinary school after that.

Lucky is now in her Junior year in High school and is as accident prone as ever.

She's now physically stronger than when she was at the beginning of last year. She is teased at school , and people poke her in the back and ask her questions.

She met a 23-year-old teacher named Cara Walker. She is her Orientation and Mobility teacher. She teaches techniques and the proper ways to use a white cane.  She thinks they have developped a silent frinedship, like with ther math teacher she had in ninth grade.

Right now she is stronger than all the girls in her gym class and is getting stronger every day. The teachers make life much harder because they are unfair with her. They expect more than she can give them. she's looking forward to some salsa and merengue lessons which will be taught by a traditional spnish instructor. it will be taught in a club in the city's downtown area. The club is called Caliente.

She is alos looking forward to another O&M lesson this Tuesday. She hopes they will go outside again because it is litterally 100 degrees in the school in the winter. It is twice as bad in the summer because her ghetto school has low-grade computers, no air-conditioning and only certain teachers enforce the use of the french lanfuage in the hallways.

Lucky hopes life will get better from here.

Lucky is looking forward to the school year. Yes, that is very hard to believe but summer is very boring. She has only worked for a total of nine days since the end of school because her father doesn't really need her.

So, she sits at home, goes on the computer, takes walks with the dog, does push-ups and sit-ups, and plans to use her brother's bench for some exercises she had been taught.

She misses her teachers Cara Walker and Mme Lacroix alot. The good about jher summer is she can stay in her room all day at her mother's, which is the coldest room in the house because of the window air-conditioner.

this year is her final year of high-school. After that, she would be going to College. She couldn't wait.

The checks for her Disablity pension will start coming in at her birthday. this will mean many changes in her ife.  Her mother will start treating her like an adult, and she will have more freedom. She does not like it when people say that she cannot do something, she will show her parents that she could do anything. She will prove them and the doctors wrong.  She will achieve her goals and will try to keep pushing the boundaries that the doctors had set for her when she was just a little girl.

She will decide what she wants, she will be herself. Her real self.

lucky is a little frustrated by people still, her parents are pretty much doing decisions for her even though she doesn't want it to be that way. Her brother and sister aren't quite fair to her, and she found out at the last minute that her mother was taking control  of her disability pension. HER money!

On top of that, her mother won't lisen to her when she says she needs a longer cane. Her mother is taking over her life, she doesn't know how dangerous having a too-short cane is. She has already unintentionally tripped herself with it.

She plans to convince someone in her family that her cane is in fact 8 to 10 inches too short. if her mother won't listen to her, someone will have to.

Finally! Someone's gonna do something about her cane problem. Her sister plans to buy her one for her birthday. She just hopes that that will really happen.

So school has started once more, and once more she meets her friends. Her firends are the schoolteachers. No one wants to be friends with her, because they are afraid and don't want to be friedns with THE only visually impaired student in the school.

why, just yeasterday, she went to the computer lab with her Co-op class to work on her resume, and two girls had reserved a computer for their friend, because they had seen Lucky walk toward them. So all the computers were taken, so she had to go to a different lab to work on her stuff.

Her sister finds it really sad, but there's nothing they can do about it. everyone's just so afraid of her, taht they're maing her anti-social. And her parents wonder why she's that way! It's been like that since elememtary school.

Lucky hopes that she will make real non-teacher friends in college next year.

Sorry, it was really beginning to bother me . So this post kinda helped me with my frustration.

lucky is going to do coop at Jules-Leger (french school for the deaf/blind) she wishes she could switch schools and study there for her last year of HS.

The people over there respect her, she went there yesterday for a meeting and she knows she woud be respected.

At home, people treat her quite unfairly and she feels lonely. Everyone is concentrating on making her brother happy, so he wouldn't get mad at them. But what about her? Her needs seem to come in last.

She wonders if she'll have to stay unhappy for long.

well...COOP is going superbly well , wich Lucky is happy about. Everyone loves her there...or almost everyone, there's this 4 and a half year-old who hates her guts for some reason.

She got her heck from the place for disability pensions a couple days ago , so she can take out loads of money and buy good Christmas gifts this year.

Something else she's happy about , is that she lost weight since she went for her physical exam a few weeks ago.

Her dad hasn't fixed the light in her room yet , so she still has to use the lamp. But yesterday, it burnt out and she ran into the wall which hurt alot.

what's more, tomorrow she will really start her project fro COOP which she can't wait for. she wants to show all thenormal  kids how great that place is using a kiosk like everyone else in her class.

And the best thing of all , is that she will receive a longer cane in a few weeks from now. Worst comes to worse, she'll get it in mid- January which is OK.

As long as she gets ity befre the second semester starts she's happy.
