The way it's setup, if you play more individual games rather than team games, you get more points.  Just because as an individual, you don't share any of the points with other players.

I might have to check, but I think awhile ago one of the IMPs that was on the council or whatever said that once a faction was eliminated, they didn't know if they were not allowed to participate or just not in the running for winning and such. Not sure. You might still be able to play.
