Greetings, Feris Landala reporting for duty. Not ashamed to admit, a bit overwhelmed, but I approach every task with bravery and a 'can do' attitude.

I await further instructions and will explore as much as possible in the meantime.

Howdy- good to see your coming in with a good attitude.  If you'd like, you can jump onto mIRC and find the #Vast_Empire room or maybe #VENA - I should be on under the name 'FMJR.'  Just ask someone to get me and it should only be a moment.

Other than that though, I might as well get you started on 'Basic Training' or (BT).  You've already completed the portion we call Imperial Initiation (II) by coming in here and introducing yourself, so we'll move on to the second phase that we call 'Flight School.'  The first step of Flight School is to create the character you'll be using for, more than likely, your entire Vast Empire Navy (VEN) career.  So, if you'll follow the link below, you can find some easy reading on how we tend to make our bios, then you can create one for yourself by posting it in here.  At that point the staff will critique it and let you go on if we're satisfied.  Let us know if you have any questions whatsoever: Welcome to the Vast Empire Navy.

I do have one question. Is this based soley on participating in the various online multiplayer games or is there an RP aspect as well?

  Feris' Bio
August 19, 2006 1:14:57 AM    View the profile of Feris Landala
Physical Description:
Feris stands a mere 5'8" tall, with a build that borders between medium and large. He has a naturally golden skin tone from many years spent in the sun. His eyes are a hazel green that seem to change color depending on the ambient light, they can range from bright green to brown to the faintest hint of blue. He wears his hair in perfectly cropped military fashion, no beard and no moustache. Feris believes strongly in military discipline and as such wears his uniform with pride, always crisp and well pressed with polished boots and metal surfaces shining.

Personality:
Feris has a rather severe personality. He believes that harsh lessons are the ones best remembered. While he seems utterly controlled and disciplined on the outside, this is only a compensation for the turmoil within. Feris is desperate to prove himself at every opportunity. He sees every inspection, every exam and every seemingly routine task as a test of his personal worth, tests that he will not allow himself to fail. His perfectionism runs so deeply that for days after what he considers to be a substandard performance he will be in shambles. He will analyze every detail of what he did desperately trying to find where he went wrong.

Feris is also staunchly loyal to his friends, though it takes him quite a while to develop a true friendship. Once Feris develops a true bond with someone, he will defend that person with every ounce of strength in him. On the other hand, he is quite paranoid and has no level of trust for those he does not know well. He will at times go so far as to accuse others of plotting against him. He is not one for political games; he prefers direct action with direct results. He recognizes the need for such subtle strategies but does not feel that he has any talent or taste for such maneuvering.

History:
Much of Feris' ambition and personality can be attested to his father. Kurlovv Landala was an anti smuggling operative assigned to patrol the coreward systems. He had a brilliant career and was widely regarded as one of the best. One fateful operation brought an end to all that. Working undercover, Kurlovv was conducting a transaction with a small time smuggling outfit near the edge of the core. Everything was going according to plans until Kurlovv was ambushed in the local cantina. No one should have been able to break his cover, but somehow the smugglers had made him. Kurlovv, being no stranger to close quarters engagements, was able to take out a good number of the group before a lucky shot nearly destroyed his right hand.

Desperate to escape and discover the source of the leak, Kurlovv fled, leading the remaining smugglers on a deadly game of cat and mouse. Wounded and in unfamiliar territory, it wasn't long before Feris' father was caught. Amid the group of smugglers, Kurlovv saw what would become his end, his partner Terion Alamcz. Kurlovv had resigned himself to death, when luck intervened in the form of local security coming to investigate. Narrowly escaping death, Kurlovv was taken to an emergency medical facility where most of the functionality of his right hand was restored.

Months later, Kurlovv would give testimony on his partner and long time friend. Alamcz was sentenced to death for the crime of treason. Kurlovv himself was offered a command position due to the fact that his injury prevented further field operations. He accepted this position but was never happy again. He resigned his commission a few short months later.

Kurlovv always spoke to his son of the values of loyalty and vigilance. Feris took these lessons to heart and applied himself as best as he could. He trained himself physically and mentally. While he was a fair student in his early years, Feris' instructors could not help but notice his drive and determination to do better. When he reached the age of eighteen, Feris believed it to be nothing short of destiny that he join the Imperial Navy in the hopes of continuing his father's mission of bringing justice to every corner of the universe.

Hobbies:
Being relentlessly driven, even in his spare time Feris seeks to constantly improve himself. Depending on his mood he can be found training himself physically by lifting weights or practicing combat techniques or studying for upcoming exams. Feris will, on rare occasions join classmates at the cantina for a few drinks, but he is very reserved when it comes to consumption.

Pilot Personality:
Having only been in the flight school for a short time, Feris has not yet developed a concrete flying style yet. He leans towards a combination of a bandit and duke. In flight, as well as in the rest of his pursuits, Feris is driven towards accomplishing his goals. He will strive for a high kill count unless a better opportunity to prove himself is available. Feris routinely will expose himself to the greatest risks, which puts any wingman he serves with in an unenviable position. The greatest challenge Feris would have to face in the sky is being partnered with a mediocre pilot. His drive to prove himself would directly conflict with his need to loyally keep his partner safe.

Very, very nice bio, man- probably one of the best I've seen just coming in.  Its very well written, you don't trip over words and it seems like you know you're character.  However, since its my job, lol, I'm going to point out a few things for you.

The thing I like to do first and foremost, is to create a problem for your character- that leads way for better character developement.  Perhaps there is a goal in mind- I suppose yours is to be the best.  However, maybe there are problems at home, some discomfort or fear of failfure- you didn't mention the mother at all here, maybe she could come in on this.  I won't attempt to lead you on, but its something to think about it and I'm sure would certainly benefit you in the future.

Now, if you'd like, you can continue on with your bio and correct that a little but either way I'd like you to continue on to 'Chapter 2: Pilot Procedure' .  There's an assignment there, so make sure you post it here so we can see it.  After that, I'll critique it quick, but in the meantime, you can start looking over the third and final chapter 'The Post.'  Those can all be found off the site I gave you above.  And to your question about if there is some RPGing- we're primarilly story based RPGing, not so much on the gaming.  That's more of the army division's affair, so expect to be writing here.  And if you're looking to prove yourself, I have just the squadron for you :>  Can't wait to see what you can do- Rock On.

Thanks for the feedback, I really enjoyed writing it.

As far as the problem/character flaw, I had considered Feris' perfectionism combined with his dual natured unwillingness to trust/staunch loyalty to those he does befriend to be a bit of a problem.

Beyond that I'm certain I can come up with some other appropriate troubles, I had thought of giving him some wingman troubles such as leaving his wingman high and dry or (more safely) being a kill hog. I just wasn't certain how appropriate either of these would be considering that Feris has only just entered the acadamy.

I'll play around with some ideas and let you know once I come up with something.

Also regarding chapter 2 and 3... I kind of cheated and read ahead.
At some point over the weekend I'll be re-reading everything to make sure I've got it then working on the assignments.

Thanks for all the assistance.

  Offensive/Defensive Tactics Assignment
August 20, 2006 6:48:20 PM    View the profile of Feris Landala
The Split S

Execution: While turning, invert your craft and pull back on the stick.

Implementation:
The Split S is a great defensive maneuver to lose a bandit on your tail in gun range. While it is not likely to assist you with oncoming missiles, it can help you to shake a target lock to prevent the missile from being launched.
There is limited offensive potential for this maneuver; however it does result in a dramatic increase in speed. One possible use for the Split S in an offensive manner is if a bandit were to pass underneath you flying in the opposite direction. The Split S would allow you to drop your altitude and gain enough speed to catch the bandit.

The High Speed Yo-Yo

Execution: Roll slightly and ease into a climb. At the top of the climb roll again slightly and dive back down.

Implementation: The High Speed Yo-Yo is a perfect offensive counter to the break turn. As the bandit heads through his turn, you can re-gain optimum firing position with the High Speed Yo-Yo. The initial roll and climb will allow the bandit to fly through his turn and put a bit of distance between himself and you. However, on the second roll and dive you will effectively cut off his turn putting you back into firing position.

Be aware that if the bandit recognizes the tactic, one option left for him would be to at the edge of his turn, pull up into a heavy climb. Because of the additional speed granted to you by the dive, your turning radius at this point will be increased. Therefore it is recommended that you make the climb as quick and subtle as possible.

Started working on some basic stuff for part three (the posts) and ran into a bit of difficulty. I didn't click on every single name, but I did look through the training roster looking for at least a few people with profiles.

Just wondering how I should approach my squadron for the posts, just make some stuff up about them?

Also, in my experience the leader of a squadron is addressed as Commander, regardless of rank, refering to his or her command of the squadron. Is this the correct protocol? (I'm sure this will be addressed at some point in the future, but for my post I'd like to make sure that I am addressing everyone by their proper rank.)

Your experience?  Intriguing- indulge me.

As to your questions: Commander is usually addressed to the Squadron Commander for position, yes.  However, when speaking in terms of rank, one doesn't have to call someone by their exact rank either- for instance: an Ensign, a Second Lieutenant, a first Lieutenant and a Lieutenant commander are all known as- 'Lieutenent.'  This goes the same for crewman ranks, petty offices and warrant officers.  That would usually be the case of a higher-up speaking to a commander, though.

How shoudl you approach the story?  That's all you man, I really don't have much say in how creative you can get.  I mean, as long as you're keeping things 'realistic' in our sense, I'll probably be fine with it.  The way I expect most people to do it is to create some breif introductions for the people you'll by flying with as well as both you and your commander (that of which you choose).  From there you might build a conflict, perhaps with the other members, yourself or both, but the idea is to give some idea of a story though you're only really making a post.  That post basically goes something like- this is your first time flying in a real fighter and you need to make it seem that way.  At the same time, you have to make it apparent you're being tested as well as being taught, perhaps he sends out some drones for you to shoot out, after some flying practice of course, or maybe a race is coordinated, or- maybe you can think of something :>  I try my best not to give the recruits their own ideas.  I like to see you guys get creative, so I'll leave it at that.

Well done on your maneuvers btw- you got those pretty much right on the money.  Can't wait to see how you do here man- thanks for stayin with us and keepin it up.  Rock on.

By 'in my experience' I was merely refering to the protocol for addressing commanding officers that I have read in most of the books, and also familiar with from my time in the US Navy.

Sorry its taking so long for my post, it's been a rough couple of days, but I have sometime this evening and I will be diving into it pretty hard.

It was 5 a.m. when the alarm clock went off in Feris' shabby apartment. With a grumble he flicked the switch to turn off the wailing alarm. Only six hours earlier, Feris had lain down to sleep. One agonizing hour after that he had realized it was pointless. Today was the day he would, for the very first time, enter the cockpit and fly an Interceptor. He had done several training missions in the simulators and spent hours studying all the technical information on the fighter craft, but today would be the real test. Instead of sleeping he had spent the late hours of the night reviewing everything he could, from tactical maneuvers to basic maintenance procedures. He knew from the moment he and his class set foot in the hangar, everything would be graded.

Now that it was time to start getting ready, the nervousness set in much more. Feris' hands were shaking slightly and he developed a light layer of sweat no matter how cold he set the room's temperature. It would be routine that saved him. He made his way to the refresher and washed himself, becoming less groggy with each passing moment. In his tiny closet hung his pride and joy, the only possession he had that he took any pride in, his Imperial flight suit. To others it might just be a uniform, but to Feris, the deep black flight suit represented the promise of hope; hope for achievement, hope to prove himself worthy and most of all hope to never fail and disappoint the great traditions associated with wearing the uniform.

Feris stepped into the flight suit and sealed it tightly. He looked himself over in the mirror and found a bit of reassurance there. It was as if, by putting on the uniform, Feris had stepped into a different person, not the paranoid and uncertain Feris of everyday life, but the confident and disciplined Feris that he always strove to become. Feris gathered his helmet, gear bag and identification badge and headed toward the door. Before he left though, he set his gear down and turned to a picture of his father he had crudely taped to the wall and gave it a sharp salute. 'I won't let you down', he promised to himself and the photo.

He made his way through the halls of the VENA headquarters, already buzzing with pilots and trainees heading to their stations, towards hangar 23G-1 where he was to meet up with his class. From there they would board the bulk cruiser that would take them to the 'Perser Summit', an Interceptor cruiser that held their fighters.
Arriving at hangar 23G-1 he saw a few students from his training class already there. Feris chastised himself for not being the first one to arrive. Crewmen thrawn, Chimera and Zedi were casually talking with Line Captain Denar, one of the two training officers. It didn't help matters for Feris that he knew these three were the top three in the class. Feris was currently ranked fourth, good, but not good enough for any special attention. Setting down his gear by his classmates he gave Captain Denar a rigid salute. Smiling and nodding to Feris, Captain Denar gave his own salute back, a casual victim of routine salute. Feris never liked Captain Denar's approach to discipline and training, he was very laid back and casual. Of course the lessons that he had to give were no less valuable, but it was hard to respect a captain that acted more like a backwater Rebellion pilot than an officer of the Vast Empire.

As if to answer his distress, Feris heard the sharp voice of the second training officer, 1st Lieutenant Courtney, call out "Crewmen form up at attention!" At this, the rest of the class who had filtered in all scrambled to form ranks. Captain Denar, being the senior officer, began to address the class.

"Crewmen, today marks a day you will not likely forget for the rest of your lives. Today you will fly the finest fighting craft in the sky, the Tie Interceptor. You've all done your fair share of time in the simulators but as any pilot will tell you, they don't compare to the real thing.

When we get aboard the 'Perser Summit' we will be dividing into two groups of six. One group will be with me and the other with Lieutenant Courtney. Lieutenant Courtney's team will consist of Crewmen thrawn, honcoop, Saracirce, shadowbane, Awitz and robedino. The rest of you will be with me so please form up with your team and we will get  underway."

Feris cursed to himself, he would have much preferred to be in Lieutenant Courtney's group, but then they were probably aware of this and put him with Captain Denar just to spite him. He grabbed his gear and gathered with his group by Captain Denar. It was an interesting group to say the least, Crewmen Chimera and Zedi being the number two and three students respectively, then there was Crewman Albatrossian, the lowest of the class. Albatrossian was the type that always showed up late with a disheveled uniform, but he performed well on his technical tests which was why he had not been dropped yet. More than likely he would end up as a technician and not a pilot. Feris surveyed his class again on the way to the bulk cruiser and wondered how many would make it past this day. While officially the day was not to be graded and only intended to acquaint pilots with the reality of flying, Feris knew that the bulk of dropouts happened after this day.

As the cruiser lifted gently out of the hangar Captain Denar proceeded to give them more information about their upcoming flight.

"Alright lads, it's just a short flight to the 'Perser Summit' and we will be in the air almost immediately thereafter so I want to cover some basic information with you. First and foremost, think safety. We need every pilot and craft we have so we don't want to see you sacrifice yourself over pride. If you think you need to bail out, do so. We will have an emergency craft on station that will recover you and your craft if anything should go wrong. I don't want to worry you, we've never had a major accident during a training flight and the Ties you'll be flying are in perfect condition, but it's always best to err on the side of caution.

Also remember this is not a competition or a graded activity. In other words no showboating! We're going up just to give you a basic feel of actual space flight, nothing more. There will be plenty of chances for you to show your stuff in the near future."

Captain Denar sat back down began discussing something with Lieutenant Courtney. Most of the class sat in silence for the short ride, nervously fidgeting and adjusting their flight suits. The tension in the air was almost tangible.

They soon arrived to their destination, the planet Tague. Tague was an uninhabitable gas planet that would have been a beautiful sight were it not for the more inspiring sight of the Interceptor cruiser that seemed to take up a large portion of the sky in front of them. The wedge shaped vessel sent a shiver down Feris' spine as it seemed to resonate with power. Laser turrets seemed to sprout from every surface of the massive warship. Feris looked around and saw that he was not alone in his awe, for many of his classmates this was their first time seeing such a large vessel up close.

The bulk cruiser eased along side the 'Perser Summit' and shuddered a bit as it docked with the larger ship. The two training officer stood and ushered the class through the docking arm and into the hangar of the 'Summit'. The hangar itself was just as impressive as the exterior, busy technicians working on several fighter craft as security patrols made their rounds. The class didn't have time to stand wide eyed though, they were quickly ushered to a neighboring hangar where they were greeted by a squadron of gleaming Tie Interceptors. The excitement was almost too much to bear. Feris felt like he was in some different reality.

"All right crewmen," called out Captain Denar, "now let's split of into our groups. To make things simple, my group will form up by last name. Start with Crewman Albatrossian here at the first ship and so forth. Begin by performing your pre-flight checks."

Feris noted with a bit of dismay that he was assigned the last Tie in his group. Too excited to be too concerned with the superstitious implications of this he trotted over to the fighter and began to check all outboard systems for faults. Finding none, he stood at attention in front of his fighter and awaited further instructions.

"Next, the moment you've been waiting for, hop in your fighter and finish your final checks and await my signal to begin launch. I'll be boarding my own fighter and launching just ahead of you all. Good luck pilots!"

Feris unlatched the hatch that led to the cockpit of the Interceptor and eased himself into the seat. First, he strapped himself in snuggly latching the several interlacing restraints that kept the pilot safely in the chair. He then attached the life support hose to his helmet and put it on, testing to ensure there was a secure seal and good airflow. Finally he checked each of the fighter's many systems; communication equipment, targeting computer, navigation systems and all the supporting systems that filled the craft's highly complex interior. Now he waited impatiently for the signal from Captain Denar to begin launch.

The comm. system crackled with Captain Denar's voice, "Pilot's we will be using the designation 'Trainer' for this exercise. I am Trainer Lead, Crewman Albatrossian is Trainer One and so on. Report now, in order, with your status."

"Trainer One reports all systems green"
"Trainer Two, all systems green"
"Trainer Three reports all systems green"
"Trainer Four, all systems up and ready, let's burn some space dust"
"Trainer Five, all systems green"

Feris groaned at Four's lack of discipline, he couldn't believe how the Empire allowed such disrespect.

"Trainer Six reports all systems green"

Captain Denar came back over the comm., "Alright pilots, begin launch procedures and launch in order beginning with One. Do not move towards the hangar door until the pilot before you has cleared."

Feris powered up the engines on his Tie and marveled at the barely noticeable hum the engines produced when not in motion. Turning on the repulsorlifts, Feris felt the craft lift gently into the air. He watched as Albatrossian made his slow approach toward the hangar door and exit into the vast expanse of space beyond. Each pilot made the same slow and steady approach and exit until finally it came to Feris' time to fly. He eased forward on the yoke, gauging his speed and made the same steady approach toward the hangar door. Then he was out, in the middle of space surrounded by a blanket of twinkling stars. Flying next to the huge Interceptor cruiser in the fighter, Feris gained a new appreciation of just how large the cruiser really was.

"All right pilots, form up on me and we will begin some basic maneuvering" Captain Denar ordered. Feris pushed the yoke forward a bit more and angled himself toward the training group. The Interceptor let out the high pitched whine that struck fear in the hearts of Rebellion pilots everywhere and Feris couldn't help but to smile.

The training group formed up next to Captain Denar and eagerly awaited their first order.

"Now, just to get a feel for your craft I want each of you to fly out about 100 meters, turn then fly back into formation. Again start with Trainer One."

Albatrossian shot forward, Interceptor screaming through the air, and made a wide right turn to come back over the training group and fall back into rank. Again each pilot repeated the procedure, this time subtle differences were noted between them. Trainer Two and Three each seemed to move a bit faster and made their turns much sharper than Albatrossian. Four flew a bit slower and made an even wider turn than One. Five fell somewhere in between. Again last among his group, Feris pushed forward on the yoke and shot forward, the feeling of speed was thrilling and it seemed that 100 meters passed by in an instant. He eased back on the yoke, slightly reducing his speed, and pushed the foot pedal to begin his right turn. Even with the fighter's gravitational compensators functioning perfectly, the sharp turn pressed Feris against the side of his seat. In an instant he was through the turn and rocketing back towards the waiting class. Nearing the class he eased back on the yoke again, turned and fell back into ranks.

"Good, now we are going to try a simple squadron exercise. Trainers One, Two and Three are together and Four, Five and Six. First form up into a triangular pattern, then fly out again, same distance and return. Try to keep it close, but if you run into trouble feel free to spread farther apart. Flight One, go!"

Feris watched as Flight One made its run, a bit slower than their individual flights. Two of the top students paired with the worst. It was clear who was who just by watching them. Trainer One was weaving in and out of formation. It was apparent that he was quite nervous and wasn't confident in his ability to fly straight. They made their turn and Trainer One might as well have not been in the Flight at all, lagging behind and cutting a much wider arc, Two and Three had to slow to almost a crawl to allow him to catch back up to the formation.

Flight One returned and fell back into ranks, then Captain Denar gave the signal for Flight Two to begin its run. Feris eased forward on the yoke once more and angled himself to the bottom right corner of the formation, this would be the most difficult position during the turn as he would have to cut the corner much sharper than Trainer Five to his left. He watched his sensor display to make sure that he was keeping pace with the other two pilots. As before the 100 meters passed in what seemed to be an instant. Approaching the turn, Feris eased back slightly on the yoke and began his turn. Checking his sensor display again, he saw that he was still reasonably within formation and eased the yoke forward again increasing his speed for the run back to the rest of the class.

As Flight Two formed back up with the class Captain Denar came over the comm. once again. "Good job pilots, room for improvement of course but a good start. One more exercise and then we will be heading back in. This is the fun one. I am going to fly out and each of you is going to take turns trying to get a lock on me. Use any means you can. Once you get a lock or I say times up, then you head back to the 'Summit'."

Captain Denar flew out a short distance to get a small lead on his would be attackers then called out, "Trainer One, come and get me."

Feris hoped that he was not the only one that sat wide eyed at the burst of speed with which the Captain shot forward. Trainer One shot after him and immediately tried to angle for the Captains tail. The Captain would not present such an easy target though, jukeing left and right, in the blink of an eye it seemed he dove down and away from his attacker. Trainer One desperately tried to match the Captain's dive but was far behind now. Feris was frantically trying to figure out what he would be doing in this situation. No great option was coming to him, but he thought it would be best not to pursue at full speed. Odds were good that the Captain was going to change direction again and if he were caught at full throttle he would be stuck trying to play catch up again. After a few minutes of cat and mouse, Captain Denar called time and Trainer One flew back to the 'Summit'. Next was Trainer Two, which promised to be interesting to see how the third best student flew in a combat situation. Surprisingly, Two was not able to get a lock on the Captain either, though he kept pace with him through several tight turns. He just never managed to get a lock. Trainer Three was much more fortunate, after a similar series of turns and dives, the Captain pulled into a high speed break turn which Three responded to by performing a low speed yo-yo. Instead of aiming directly for his tail, Three was content to get a lock from underneath the Captain.

Feris took several deep breaths as he prepared for his attempt. The Captain called, "Trainer Six, go!" and shot off again into the distance. Feris shoved the yoke forward and heard the scream of the Interceptor as it flew off in pursuit of the Captain. Instead of attempting to get an immediate lock, Feris figured he would attempt some form of tactics.  As the Captain juked from side to side, Feris angled upward and begun a gradual climb, putting him further from the Captain. The Captain realizing that Feris was making some form of attempt, executed a sharp break turn to port, then dove. Feris took this opportunity to show that he had been paying attention in class and performed the 'Split S'. Pitching slightly to starboard, he began to turn away from the Captain's path. Feris then hurled himself forward in a dive that plastered him to the back of his seat. When he had almost reached the Captain's level, he turned back to port and watched his sensor display to see if he had timed it correctly. The Captain now seeing Feris back in pursuit leveled off his dive and in doing so, lost some of the speed he had gained. Feris was now in a perfect position to get a sensor lock. Adjusting his craft just slightly so his targeting computer could get the lock, Feris felt a swell of pride. He was about to be one of the few who were able to lock on to the Captain.

"Time", Captain Denar called out. It took a moment for Feris to register it, the Captain just called time on him right before he was about to get a lock. This was impossible, the Captain must have known Feris was about to score. How could he do that?

"Good flying Six, meet you back at the 'Summit' for debriefing. Trainer Lead out."

'Good flying indeed', Feris thought to himself. If he weren't in the middle of flying he would have been tempted to lash out in his anger. As it was, he had no such option, so he angled his Interceptor back towards the 'Summit' and headed for the hangar bay.

When he arrived back in the hangar, he eased his craft back into the line of fighters that had already landed. Feris eased the repulsorlifts off and felt the slight rumble as his craft settled down. Still filled with anger, he shut down the engines and all the support systems quickly and proceeded to unstrap himself and exit the craft.  The rest of his class were all gathered together, talking and laughing about the days events, but Feris had no mind to join them. He simply stood next to his fighter and waited for the Captain to release them. He would be spending a few hours in the base gym this evening to vent some of the frustration of being robbed of his target lock today.

Imperial Flight School class 17329 gathered once again in the pristine hangar of the Interceptor class cruiser 'Perser Summit'. And once again Feris felt the weakening affects of nervousness course through his stomach and spread to every part of his body. True, his class had been through several space flight training sessions already, but today would be different. Today class 17329 would be introduced to atmospheric flight. They had watched countless holovids on safe procedures for atmospheric flight and heard several lectures on how different it would be. Part of Feris wished they wouldn't have explained all the dangers in such detail, part of him felt that shock was much easier to deal with than the agony of anticipation.

The members of his class were casually talking with friends, discussing the upcoming day's activities, waiting for their two flight instructors to arrive and brief them one last time. Despite his best efforts to not get close with anyone in his class, Feris had made a friend in Crewman Shadowbane. He was much like Feris in that he would rather someone tell him harshly that he was a terrible pilot, as opposed to them sugar coating the truth and letting him get killed in an actual engagement. Shadowbane also flew in Lieutenant Courtney's group, so he and Feris often would discuss the differences between Lieutenant Courtney's training methods and those of Captain Denar.

"So Denar actually said, 'Let's try one of those spinning type moves.'?' Shadowbane had asked Feris with a look of utter amazement.
"Heh, yea. So much for Imperial discipline eh?" Feris gave him a look that conveyed both his disappointment and amusement at the situation.
"You know I dropped from number four in the class to number six because of him? He keeps telling me I need to relax and let my piloting come more naturally. Hey, I'm sorry but I tend to take flying a craft that costs more than ten times everything I own a bit seriously."
Shadowbane chuckled and nodded in agreement. "Well I've got to tell you that sounds nice compared to Cranky Courtney, he makes it seem like if our boots are polished just so, somehow that will make us fly better."

As the two Crewmen were chuckling together, Captain Denar entered the hangar followed immediately by Lieutenant Courtney who bellowed out his usual, "Form up at attention Crewmen!" The class shuffled to line up at attention leaving the hangar quiet enough to hear the two officer's footsteps that fell in sync with each other.

"Alright crewmen, today is another milestone in your hopefully long Naval careers" Captain Denar said with his usual smile. "Now we've all seen the vids over and over, flying in atmosphere is going to be a lot different. You will feel the pressure and your fighter will not move the same. I want you pilots to take it nice and slow, get a feel for how your craft moves in atmosphere. Myself and Lieutenant Courtney will be taking each of you down through the atmosphere of Berchat, this way we can give you whatever assistance you might need on your way down. Once the whole class is in the atmosphere, we will be going through some basic maneuvers. Nothing too fancy, but we want you to be able to see how differently your craft will fly. I know you all are ready to get out there and show us what you're made of so let's get moving. Crewmen, fall out to your fighters and begin preflight checks."

With that the class headed up to the catwalks where their fighters waited in the launch racks. Upon reaching his fighter, Feris immediately began checking the outboard systems to ensure everything was functional and then proceeded to enter the craft, checking all the internal systems as well. Strapping himself into the pilot's chair snuggly and attaching his air supply, Feris turned on the interceptor's twin ion engine and reported, "Trainer 6, all systems green."

Once the rest of the class had reported in, Captain Denar and Lieutenant Courtney flew smoothly out of the hangar and into the open space beyond. "Crewmen launch in order" Captain Denar's voice crackled over the comm. system and one by one the class flew out to form up in line as was the standard procedure.

"Trainers break off into groups. When we fly down with you we will let you know at intervals when to turn up your gravitational compensators. The pressure may get intense at some points but you need to gradually adjust to it. Once we get down there, I will be flying back up to get the next pilot, I would ask that you stay on station and wait for everyone to get down. Trainer One, fall in beside me and we will begin."
Albatrossian glided gently forward to come along side Captain Denar and they began their decent into Berchat's atmosphere. It seemed like it took an eternity, but by the chronometer it had only been about fifteen minutes before Captain Denar could be seen flying back from the surface.

"Trainer Two, same procedure."

Captain Denar repeated this procedure with each of the Crewmen until finally it was Feris' turn.

"Trainer Six, fall in on me and we will begin."

With a resurgence of nerves, Feris eased his craft forward and fell in next to the Captain. The arced gently to port, heading towards the wasteland planet below.

"Alright Six, we are approaching atmosphere now, it may get a bit warm and rough, once you pass through the outer layer you will begin to feel the pressure. As soon as you are through, turn on your gravitational compensator just barely."

As the Captain said, a few moments later they began to push through the outer layer of the planet's atmosphere. The craft rocked a bit, and Feris was definitely sweating, though he couldn't say whether it was from heat or just nerves. Just as quickly as it began, the rattling stopped and Feris could feel the weight of the atmosphere pressing every inch of his body. His lungs felt as though they would burst. It took a moment for him to remember to turn on the gravitational compensator, once he did there was a minor drop in pressure but Feris could still feel it pressing into him.

"Report your status Six"

"Six reports all systems green Lead"

"I meant you Six, how are you handling the pressure?"

"Oh, right. Fine, Lead, I can handle it."

"Good to hear, we are going to fly down a bit further now and then stop again to readjust your compensator."

Following the Captain's lead, Feris pushed the yoke forward sending the fighter diving towards the solid ground now visible beneath them. About halfway to the surface the Captain signaled Feris to stop again and readjust his compensator. The pressure had again built to near crushing levels and was relieved only slightly by the slight increase to the compensator.

Finally they began the last leg of their journey. Feris could see the rest of the class waiting near the surface in the distance. As they neared surface level, much before Feris would have, the Captain called for him to ease back on his speed and begin to level off. It didn't take long for Feris to realize why, the pull of gravity from the planet had added to his momentum increasing his speed. It took him much longer to slow to an even patrol speed. His leveling arc was a learning experience in itself. As he pressed the foot pedal to arc relatively upward he felt as if his craft weighed a hundred times more than it did. He came to hover in line with the rest of his flight group, exactly as they had in space.

"Good job Crewmen. That was the most traumatic part for most pilots. While there is still a lot to cover as far as adjusting to atmospheric flight, entry into atmosphere is the most violent and shocking part. Now one by one we are going to make a large figure eight. We are just going to get a good feel for how some nice tight turns are going to feel. I will be flying a distance above you in case you run into trouble. Of course safety is our primary concern but I want you all to put on as much speed as you can handle. We won't likely be chasing down Rebels or criminals at half speed. Trainer One, whenever you are ready."

As with every exercise they had done, Feris had to wait and watch every other pilot take his turn before he was able to go. Accustomed to the wait now, Feris sat and patiently watched the other pilots. He didn't see any huge mistakes, a lot of overcorrecting though. Feris made a note to be aware of this tendency during his own flight.

It wasn't long before the rest of the class had finished their short runs and the Captain called for Feris to begin his. He took a deep breath and pushed forward on the yoke and shot forward in his fighter. In a straight line flight there wasn't much difference flying in the atmosphere, though Feris had already seen the increased time it took to slow down on a dive. They quickly approached the rock formation that the Captain had identified as the midpoint of the figure eight. Feris eased the foot pedal to turn his fighter to port and immediately noticed the slow response time. This was probably where the other pilots had overcompensated, once they felt the slow turn they probably jammed on the pedal. Feris eased back slightly on the yoke, reducing his speed and continued to turn to port. His fighter shot past the rock formation so closely that he could see dust and debris being thrown into the air in his wake.

He had made it through and not overcompensated, though Captain Denar would probably fault him for cutting it too close. Feris didn't care though; he knew that the rest of the class was probably watching with wide eyes. The second turn was much easier as it was a naturally wide turn. To minimize speed loss, Feris rolled his fighter so his port solar panel was above him and made a gradual relative climb, arcing him wide through the turn very quickly. Once he was through the wide turn, Feris leveled off his fighter and shot forward towards the second tight turn of the figure eight. This time he was ready and began his deceleration and gradual turn a bit earlier. This time he did not pass as close to the formation but still managed to pull through quickly and smoothly.

Approaching his classmates he looped around behind them and fell back into line. "Nice one Six, any closer and I think you would have left some paint on that formation" Captain Denar commented. "For our last exercise of the day we have a special treat for you all. Live fire practice." Captain Denar waited for the collective cheering to end before he continued, "We have a sensor droid for each of you to have a go on, you will each have two minutes to score as many hits or locks as you can. Your weapons should be powered down to zero, this means that you will be firing inert blasts, blanks if you will, but there will be enough energy for the droid to register your hits. This will also guarantee that if one of you decides to shoot wild, the rest of your classmates won't be in danger."

As if on command, six sensor droids floated down from the cruiser that hovered above them. "For this first combat exercise you will be flying individually. This is mainly to keep you all safe; we don't need any of you crashing into each other while trying to score a hit. Trainer One, if you would start us off please."

Trainer One flew off towards the first of the sensor droids. The droid in response shot off into a frantic series of twists and turns attempting to elude One. Trainer One made valiant attempts to stay on the tail of the droid but it was simply too fast and maneuverable. A few times One was close to the droids tail and fired off a few shots, but it was difficult to tell from a distance whether he had scored or not. Each pilot repeated the same procedure until at last Feris had the opportunity to make his attempt.

Feris knew from what he had seen of the other pilot's attempts that he would not be able to score by attempting to out fly the droid. Shooting forward after the twisting and turning droid, Feris knew he would have to outthink the droid. He figured the sensor droid would have several common tactics programmed into it, so none of those would work. Approaching the same formation where the class had performed their figure eights, the droid turned smoothly around the formation at a speed Feris could not match. Instead Feris popped his fighter into a quick climb over the formation, and spotted the droid streaking off to his starboard. Now Feris had the advantage of altitude on the tiny bandit, despite the droids chaotic movements, Feris had a good view of where he was going. He was within range to hit the droid with guns but the droids constant movement would make it difficult so Feris flicked the switch to activate his missile targeting system. Making a few small adjustments to the targeting computer while struggling to remain on the droids tail from above, Feris was able to get a target lock within a few tense moments.

He let out a deep sigh of relief as he turned off the missile system and continued to follow the droid. No matter what happened now at least he had scored a lock. Feris arced in wide of the droid, now he pursued at full speed. The droid continued with its erratic twists and turns while Feris tried to get a good firing position for his guns. Seeing that his time was almost up, Feris switched the guns to single fire and fired off a series of wild shots hoping to get at a few last minute points. He knew a few shots had hit but at this speed he didn't have the time to focus on how many.

"Time" Captain Denar called out through the comm, "Fall back into ranks and we will begin our ascent back to the 'Summit' as a group. Two groups of three, standard formation."

The class formed up again, with Captain Denar in the lead. As they made their ascent back to the 'Perser Summit', Feris noted with a bit of pride that the trip up did not seem as bad as the trip down. Again it seemed that the expectation of the event was much worse than the thing itself. Now Feris only had to confront the expectation of the last few weeks of flight school. Soon he would be placed with a squad and would face a new host of challenges.

You've heard what I have to say- great post.  Get that test in to me and I'll get you off to a squadron- graduation is next Sunday for your info though.

Also, this is just a thought, if you'd like to make an extra post talking about some final test after a few more months of extensive flying and showing where you've grown and maybe how relationships have changed- something like that, then I'd be more than willing to take that into my grading for your rank amongst the rest of the people currently doing BT.  More than anything, you have seriously been building your character and it might be good to present a series of post rather than just one or two as a basis- this way you have some conclusion and you've really started a journey with your character.  Just a thought though- get that Avaitor's in and I'll have it corrected so we can send you off to a squadron.  ROCK ON!

Test submitted.

Also Re: Series of Posts for a third post.

Let me see if I understand correctly or if my idea works for you. I was thinking something along the lines of:

*1 month to finals*
Feris discusses the final exam with friend A, mentions something other guyB did. Goes through sim or actual flying exercise

*2 weeks to finals*
Feris observes class on edge due to study stress, more exercises. Perhaps mistakes are made due to lack of sleep

*1 week to finals*
Feris does some more interesting things

etc. etc. You get the idea. Is that what you had in mind, or if not does something like that work for you?

Hah, Trevor, as much as you request him to be in your flight, he's going to become part of my squadron.

If you've looked at things around Aegis lately, its not so bright, and I think we really need him more than anyone else, even though Nazgul is a great squadron and all, I'm trying to build a "New" name for aegis.

Feris, when you get your results back from that test, let me know.  And just a prior welcome from me to Aegis Squadron.

*me tips hat

Have a great time in the Vast Empire Navy

It's already been done, lol- sory man.  Jaden and Feris have the information for their records but just for anyone who was wondering, he passed with a 100 percentile and is first in the rankings thus far, should two more people graduate within the week.  Congratulations, pilot.  Welcome to Active Duty.
