Welcome to the Vast Empire Naval Academy, Crewman Aaasir.

My name is Warrant Officer 2nd Class Wyl Trykon, and I'll be your Training Officer (TO) while you go through the Academy's Orientation program.  I'll be around to help get you acclimated to life in the Vast Empire (a process we call, "Basic Training"), the most important part of which is learning how to role-play as an Imperial character (a starfighter pilot or junior officer aboard a capital ship) in an ongoing, collaboratively-written story.  If you choose to serve in the Starfighter Corps, these skills will be taught in a program we call, "Flight School," and if you choose to serve in Fleet Command as a junior bridge officer aboard a capital ship, you'll learn these skills in a program called, "Command School."

But with all that said, Training is fairly straightforward, and very quick.  Heck, with your first post here on the Naval Academy board, you've already completed Imperial Initiation, (well done) and are hereby clear to choose a training School, which will prepare you for daily life as a pilot in a VE squadron or on a ship.  Glad to hear you have rp-ing experience: let's get you up to speed on how we do things here, and delve into writing, shall we?

Your next step should be to visit the VE Wiki page for Basic Training, found here, and read through the information provided.  Choose a School (Flight School if you want to pilot a starfighter, or Command School if you want to serve on the bridge of a capital ship), and begin working on Chapter 1: Character Development by clicking the appropriate link.  When you finish the assignment, post your work here (bio and ID line), so I can review it, and we'll proceed from there.  Please note: here in the VE, we write stories in the third person, past tense; you should too.

If you need further guidance, please send a Private Message with your questions to "Trykon" here on the ComNet, or go to the Naval Academy channel on IRC, which is #VENA, and make an inquiry of any staff member.  Good luck with your training, Crewman, and again, welcome to the Vast Empire.

Sincerely,

WO2 Wyl Trykon, your TO

Physical Description
Tosth is a very disciplined Mon Calamari. Very fit and proud, his Imperial uniform makes others know that he is all business and will not stand for any idiocy from his fellow officers. When not in uniform, he prefers to wear long, flowing robes of shades of brown and black. Most can see, when he is deep in thought or overcome with stress, that his left hand will constantly stroke his barbel, as if it helps him to think.
Personality
As if trying to make up for the flaws of his entire race, Tosth is a very stern and disciplined Mon Calamari, not obsessed with gaining power. His obsession lies in wiping out all of the traitors of his species in the Rebel Alliance, most of all, the entire who has gained the rank of Admiral, Ackbar. As most of his species, he loves the exploration of space. In his free time, Tosth studies as much as possible in the field of engineering, for it is his dream to one day to become one of the leading researchers for the Imperial Navy.
Character’s Background
As would be expected from the Mon Calamari, Tosth is very knowledgeable in the field of space exploration and ships. Although no member of his family was enlisted in the ranks of the Empire, everyone supported it and despised the Rebel Alliance. They lived in relative peace, always with the Quarren threat. Then, one day, when Tosth was 15 and working in the family owned shipyard, there was a surprise raid by the Quarren. His father and uncle died in the raid and Tosth was lucky to survive, coming out with major torso burns. Ever since that day, Tosth has wanted to exact revenge on every Quarren in existence, but has not had a chance.
Upon his coming of age at 17, Tosth made a decision to gather the funds to travel to Coruscant to enlist into the Imperial Navy. However, given the position of Dac and its allegiance to the Rebel Alliance, he could not directly head to Coruscant. Tosth’s first stop was at Wayland. He decided to work at a shipyard and as a pilot for a year to make some credits, given the support of the Empire on the planet and to refine his piloting skills. A year later, however, he was ambushed by pirates and lost everything but his ship. Yet again, he was stranded, seeing the Rebel Alliance as the reason for the cause of disunity and chaos in the galaxy.
His next stop was at Kuat, where he knew most of the planet sy mpathized with the Empire. He knew of their shipbuilding capabilities and applied for job there. During the interview, he explained his past and his desire to enlist in the Imperial Navy. Kuat gladly hired him and his treasury started to grow.
After he finished working at Kuat, he left for Coruscant to apply for the Naval Academy. He applied and was accepted on his twentieth birthday. He knew this was his only chance to avenge his family from the Quarren and to purge the traitorous Mon Calamari from the galaxy. So begins his journey into the Vast Empire.

Okay, "Fishhead," great work so far.  I love that callsign.    There are a couple other Mon Cals in the VE; I'm sure they'll be glad to interact with another loyal Imperial from Dac.  I have a couple of suggestions for improvements before you move on:

1.  Wayland was an incredibly secret base for the Emperor's most guarded secrets - it's unlikely anyone would just happen to stop there... substitute another world, please.

2.  Go ahead and give a quick pass for typos and misspelled words, and flesh out the three sections of the bio a little more.  For physical description, make sure you actual describe what he looks like.  For personality, try to give more of a sense of how he typically acts.  For the bio, don't neglect to answer why he's specifically choosing the Vast Empire (so far from his homeworld) out of all the post-Imperial factions.

Once you work in those things, go ahead and put it all on a wiki page, and place a link to the page here in your training thread.    Good work so far; just a little more and you'll be ready for the next Chapter.  Incidentally, are you interested in Capital Ships or Starfighters?

Thank you for your initial patience, and your work since my first response to your hello message; onward!

The choice is entirely up to you, Fishhead.  When you move to Chapter 2, the training schools diverge, so just focus on these changes for now, and then pick whichever career path seems more exciting to you, before you move on to the next Chapter.

One quick question: As one of the post-Imperial factions, which part of the galaxy is it located? I know I said Coruscant, but that's probably not right... And if I were to mention other factions.... What factions can I add? I know of the Imperial Remnant...

This is something that's not immediately clear without doing some research, as things are now, so don't feel bad about not really knowing.  There's actually a big interdivisional effort going on right now to clarify this information for new people.

In the mean time, just to briefly answer your question: The Vast Empire controls several systems in an out-of-the-way corner of the Galaxy, near Cerea.  The year is 12 ABY.  In our club's timeline (which has diverged slightly from standard SW canon), Grand Admiral Thrawn survived the Battle of Bilbringi, and his faction and Isard's are still very active on the Galactic stage.  The New Republic, and the various warlord-led Imperial successor states, are all vying for dominance, and they have all (except for the VE) resorted to biological warfare, in a series of attacks and counters known as the Plague Wars.  See this thread for a little more information.

Thanks for the extra information. I'll spend some time looking at it.

While I'm working on the Background, I believe I have the Physical Description and Personality up to par. Anything else I can do to make it any better?

Physical Description Tosth is a very disciplined Mon Calamari, evident in mind and body. Very fit and proud, his Imperial uniform makes others know that he is all business and will not stand for any idiocy from his fellow officers.
His bulbous eyes do not show any emotion whatsoever; they are pits of darkness. His body is in an almost perfect condition, from his daily swims and working in shipyards. However, his torso bears scars that still pain him when he becomes too active.
When not in uniform, he prefers to wear long, flowing robes of shades of brown and black. Most can see, when he is deep in thought or overcome with stress that his left hand will constantly stroke his barbel, as if it helps him to think. Even out of uniform, Tosth is a very cold, powerful Mon Calamari.
Personality   As if trying to make up for the flaws of his entire race, Tosth is a very stern and disciplined Mon Calamari, not obsessed with gaining power. His obsession lies in wiping out all of the traitors of his species in the Rebel Alliance, most of all, the entire who has gained the rank of Admiral, Ackbar. As most of his species, he loves the exploration of space. Serving the Empire is his life. He does not stand at all for jokes, nor does he tell jokes. He only associates with his fellow Mon Calamari officers and very rarely does he take towards other races.

He is also seen often in cantinas located near where he is assigned, drinking Sapphire Fogblasters. He is often viewed as a loner to individuals not of his race.

He is also seen often in cantinas located near where he is assigned, drinking Sapphire Fogblasters. He is often viewed as a loner to individuals not of his race.

Character’s Background:
As would be expected from the Mon Calamari, Tosth is very knowledgeable in the field of space exploration and ships. His family owned one of the few local shipyards on the planet, and due to the Imperial presence, which gave them a greater ability for trade, they were relatively wealthy. From a young age, Tosth began studying ship design and realized that he wanted to be an engineer someday.

The first raid happened when he was 10. The Quarren, who had openly despised the Aaaiser family, never attacking, finally made their move. While Tosth was inside his home studying hyperspace drives, a small band of Quarrens, equipped with blaster rifles attacked the shipyard and his home. His mother hid him so they could not find him. “Stay here,” she said. “There are bad people about.” As soon as she had turned away from him and made sure he was safe, a Quarren shot her and ran. Even through his mother’s wails of agony, he stayed put, crying for his mother, not wanting her to die. Soon, though, his father and one of his uncles came into the room where he was hiding and his mother was dead. Tosth clambered out of hiding realizing what had happened. Soon, he found out that in this raid, his grandfather had also perished, when the Quarren had blown up the engine his grandfather had been building. “I’ll kill them,” he said. “I’ll kill every single one of them one day.”

Over the next few years, the raids continued. Tosth’s family became better prepared for the raids and usually could fend off the Quarren. Then, one day, after Alderaan had been destroyed, as if in retaliation, a combined force of Mon Calamarians and Quarren attacked the shipyard. Everyone in his family died. Tosth escaped narrowly, but with massive wounds on his torso. He found refuge, where he recuperated. From that day on, though, he had a new objective: Join the Empire and crush the Rebellion and all of the Quarren in the galaxy. But before he could do that, he had to leave Dac. Leaving Dac to join the Empire would be nearly impossible, given the position of Dac. So he took the remaining credits his family owned and bought a XS Light Freighter from a local merchant. But, unfortunately, his credits were fast disappearing. There was no way that he could make it to Coruscant with the few credits he had left…

Deciding that he could not make a direct run to Coruscant to apply for the Naval Academy, Tosth decided to stop at Commenor. He knew that Commenor was well-known for its trade; almost as prestigious as some of the Core Worlds. He was also interested in studying at the University of Commenor. So once he arrived at Commenor, he traveled to the University to begin studies. It didn’t take long for him to find that he did not fit in among the other students; they constantly scorned him, calling him “Fishhead” and, because he was from Dac, considered him to be a Rebel sympathizer. So, at the age of 20, Tosth withdrew from the University of Commenor, with a little under a year of studies in engineering. He did not leave Commenor, however. He traveled to Chasin City and sought employment there, as a pilot. One of the local restaurants hired him to transport spices throughout the Core Worlds. When asked his name, Tosth answered simply with “Fishhead.”

Over the next few years, Tosth gained renown throughout the Core Worlds for his piloting skills. Every time pirates attacked, he easily fended them off. He never lost a single shipment.  He was happy, but had not yet trekked towards Coruscant. Then came the news of the Emperor’s death and the end of the Empire. The Core had exploded with piracy. Tosth finally lost a load. He returned back to the restaurant he had been working for so many years, turning in his resignation. His employer, distraught with  this news, tried to convince him otherwise. “You sure, son? It’s one load. You’re the best pilot around these parts…”

Tosth replied smoothly with, “I’m sure. I’ve been honored working with you. But my name has been dishonored. I have to bring honor back to my name.” Knowing his employer still supported the Empire, continued, saying “The only way I can regain my honor is by serving in the Imperial Navy. By bringing unity back into the galaxy. Destroying the traitors and the pirates.”

“Alright, son. Just know that the Empire’s not what it used to be. They’ve turned into warring factions. Thrawn’s in charge of one of them, Isard’s got another, and there’s other small factions. They’ve all got biological warfare. I would advise not joining them. Your death would come too easily…. There’s one other Imperial faction, though. It’s called the Vast Empire and it’s near Cerea. Relatively small, but from what I’ve heard, is growing quite quickly. It’s your best shot. Good luck out there, Fishhead.”

With these words still in his head, Tosth left to find this Vast Empire to join their Navy. To command capital ships. To fulfill his dreams. To bring order and justice into this hugely immoral and unjustified galaxy. He walked the stairs into the Vast Empire Naval Academy, with huge visions of domination of Dac and anyone not supportive of the Empire. So begins his journey into the Vast Empire…

The speed with which you completed the assignment is impressive, Fishhead, and the quality of prose is certainly sufficient to pass the Chapter of Command School.  I'm going to take the unusual step, though, of saying that in-story, your character actually failed the exercise with that performance.  It won't actually make any difference OOC: I'm passing you to the third and final Chapter of Command School now.  But, for IC purposes, imagine your character had to repeat the exercise before progressing: it should give you more psychological stuff to work with as you develop him moving forward (maybe he resents the instructors for "holding him back," or maybe he's ashamed of showing weakness, or... again, specifics are up to you.  ).

Congratulations!  For Chapter 3, send a sample report in to Atrasin and to myself, and go ahead and post a copy of said report here in your training thread for reference.  Assuming everything is in order, we'll get you placed aboard a ship!

Thanks, Trykon. I was hoping for some feedback on the approach I took to it. I'm glad to hear that it worked. I'll get chapter 3 up as soon as I can.

I've got a few questions, though. The way I wrote the prose for chapter 2; will that hurt my chances for the Star of the Academy as I believe it to be IC?

And the Ancilliary Skills and Certifications. Could you explain how that works? I'm afraid I got a bit confused beforehand. Do you have a set of skills needed before you can get certified or do you gain the skills during certification?

1.  The way you wrote the training story post was just fine.  Well formatted, with good spelling and grammar, with a clear beginning, middle, and end.  You demonstrated your character performing his role aboard ship, you touched on the concept of morality and the Navy virtues given the circumstances, and you let us inside his head.  The only thing I might have wished for more of was detail: we could have afforded to read a little more, if we got to see some more in-depth descriptions of tactics and/or your guy's interactions with other crew members.  In all, though, it was a more-than-competent post, so you pass the assignment.

2.  Because you acquitted yourself well, as a writer and new member of the club, that means you pass the Chapter of training school, and helps your chances of earning the Star of the Academy medal.  For me, Academy medals (and indeed, most awards) are reflective of OOC activity, not IC contributions...  If we were just giving awards based on how awesome a given player-character was, everyone would simply write their PCs doing awesome things all the time, and it would be pretty unrealistic to have a bunch of superheroes running around Star Wars never messing up.  Instead, when a member of the VE club does well, they are rewarded for their activity - the in-story explanation is secondary, as far as I'm concerned.  So, if you do receive the Star of the Academy, it will be because you did well as a member, but the award will also be applied in-story to your character, as if he did very well during his Academy days.  We don't write out the entire Academy process, so there's plenty of room for interpretation.  Hope that's clear.

3.  Ah, Naval Ancillary Skills and Naval Certifications.  Okay, here goes.  The Naval Certification program is a system whereby player-characters can specialize in different areas of military-related expertise.  For example, many pilots begin the Top Gun Certification track, primarily to become "Certified" to fly more advanced starfighters in official missions.  You can think of Certifications as reflecting your specialty in the Navy, beyond just whether you serve in fighters or cap ships.  The Ancillary Skills are almost entirely separate from that system (there are some skills which are pre-requisites for some of the Certs, but in general, you should think of them as two different things).  Whereas there are rank requirements for Certs (so that you can only progress a little at a time), Skills may be completed as fast as you can write the story posts for them.  The Skills system is designed to let you personalize your character, and prevent folks from "god-moding" in official stories, by preventing them from using named "Skills" in official club stories until they have proven they can responsibly write about having those abilities in a Skills post.  So, first you write a skills mission post where you show your character using a skill (like interrogation, say), and explain where/how/why he learned the skill, and if you write it well enough, then you're cleared to use that skill in official story posts (if you find yourself with a prisoner, in-story, after completed the Interrogation skill post, for example, you could then interrogate that prisoner).  Hope that makes sense, too.

Congratulations, Fishhead!  As you can see from the post after this one, you've been promoted to Senior Crewman, awarded the Star of the Academy medal, and placed as the Junior Bridge Officer aboard the Chrome Fox, under Rocketman!  Welcome to active duty!

Well Fishhead, you've got a lot of options now.  Let's explore some of 'em.

If you check the "On-line Roster" from the main page, you'll note that you've been placed on the Chrome Fox, which is a part of Task Force Aurek, which is in turn part of Second Fleet.  Knowing your assignment, you can then check the Navy Story Board ComNet, and look for active official stories involving your ship.  A quick look reveals no stories specifically for the Chrome Fox, and no active overall 2nd Fleet story, but there is a story involving Task Force Aurek, here.

Active, official stories are the first priority for active members, so the first thing you should do is read through that story, familiarize yourself with the plot, characters, and VE members involved, and then talk to those members about the story.  Once you know what's going on, and have discussed options for joining the story with some more senior people (in this particular case, I'd speak with Drac about how to contribute), you should post to the story!

Now, sometimes commanders will prefer you sit out a story until it wraps up, as a new member, to avoid the situation where you've been silent the whole story and then just appear, but since the current Aurek story is a bit of an NPC challenge, you may be able to join.  Either way, though, the tale is almost over, if I remember correctly, so you should be ready for a new official story starting in the next couple of weeks.

Whether you end up waiting for the new official story or contributing right away to this one, your secondary priority as an active-duty member is up to you.    You've got plenty of options:
1.  Work on a character development story about your character, immediately before he joins the VE, perhaps, or maybe just after, getting him situated aboard his new ship.
2.  Work on Ancillary Skills posts or your first tier of your first Certification, to "level-up" you character in preparation for future stories.
3.  Do some development work, improving a wiki page which looks a little sparse, or sharing some interesting online Star Wars resource.

All activity is welcome, and is rewarded, so there's always something worthwhile to do.    Hope that gives you some ideas about where to proceed from here: start reading, especially the official Navy stories (beginning with the current Aurek one), and then start contributing!

-Trick

ADDITION:  It's sometimes easiest to collaborate via irc, so make sure you get on the appropriate channels there, for second fleet and the VEN, as often as possible.
