  Remorse is for The Dead

The view from the platform on the bridge of the Victory-II class Star Destroyer was one of amazing proportions. The seasoned pilot, now turned officer, took in the beauty of the nebulae as he observed the space surrounding Abrae, the home of the Vast Empire Naval Headquarters. Although the planet had a bit of a plain look, this is where he had taken part in a majority of his training throughout his career in the Vast Empire Navy. Hundreds of simulation scenarios, written exams, and most important, time spent with friends. It had some sort of "sentimental" feeling to it, Jaden thought, as the capital ship hung overhead.

Jaden Khaar was now the commander of this star ship, known to the Navy as the Dead Gun. It was nearly as old as he, and the looks of the ship showed it. From the outside many scars from battle could be seen on the hull of the ship, although the hulls rating itself remained in excellent condition. It had seen enough time in between repair yards, but the war torn battleship was in prime condition. The shielding system was also running in tip top shape, along with a brand new generator to make sure it could withhold nearly anything thrown against it.  Inside, the interior had been completely overhauled. It was in pristine condition, compared to it's brethren that had been commissioned at the same time. Though it was aged, the ships firepower matched that of any Star Destroyer in the fleet. To complement everything else, this capital ship housed three squadrons; the 58th Vast Imperial Fighter Wing, known as Javelin Wing.

Jaden was snapped back into reality as one of his lieutenants coughed to grab his attention. The long haired officer stopped in his tracks as Jaden gave him a stiff glare.

"Yes Lieutenant Harris?" said Jaden, in a rough tone.

"Sir, a systems check shows we are running at 100% efficiency. All crew members are accounted for, and we're waiting for your orders. Shall we hold position?"

"Yes, Lieutenant. We will be holding here for some time, until I come into contact with my superiors. I'm going to step away for some time, you may assume command for the time being."

"Yes sir!" said Harris, snapping with a salute. Jaden quickly returned and stepped away from the platform.

1st Lieutenant R.T. Harris was the Executive Officer of the ship, second in command of the Dead Gun. He had been serving the Vast Empire for nearly ten years, and was a bit overzealous at times. Though his excitement was a good sign of character, it became a bit... annoying at times. Given, he had some of the greatest tactical skills known to any one person aboard the Dead Gun, which was one skill that this ship would definitely need in the future.

This kid sure does like to make sure I'm updated on whats going on around here... which isn't necessarily a bad thing.

Jaden stepped off of the command post and made his way to his personal quarters. He was patiently waiting for word from Captain Stormz and Vice Admiral Denethor about the current state of the Navy, as well as word about his next order of business. For now, he would relax and patiently await the coming news.

*****

A few hours later, Jaden was now strolling through the halls of his newly assigned ship. Being a captain meant he would have to know and cherish each and every inch of the craft that he was commanding. It was even better to know that the entire Star Fighter Corps had moved their Base of Operations to the Dead Gun, because he would be that much closer to his fellow pilots. Having a closely knit relationship with the pilots meant that he would be a better commander to them in the long run, which was his number one goal as Javelin Wing Commander.

The Line Captain had now made his way to the port-side turbolaser emplacements, where he found his Weapons Officer, Malachi Hzarr, scolding the weapons crew overseer about making sure that everything was in tip top shape. Jaden grinned as he approached the man, who now had sweat dripping down his forehead. The weapons overseer snapped to attention as the ship captain presented himself. Jaden quickly returned the salute and let out a chuckle as Hzarr ordered the man back to his post immediately.

"Having yourself quite the time I see?" said Jaden.

"Heh, most of the time I've got to give them hell. Half of these kids can't get it through their heads that at any time we could be deployed into action or be in the sights of the enemy," said Kai, out of breath.  "You seem to be doing alright, how's it going on the other end?"

Jaden shook his head, looking towards the ground.  "I'm just getting sick and tired of sitting here waiting. I realize I'm a fresh captain, and I should be cherishing this time I have with no action... but," Jaden let out a sigh.

"But what?" Kai interrupted. "I'm just as ready as you are to see some action. It's been quite some time since this ship has seen any as well, but I feel for you. Any word from upstairs?"

Jaden pulled out a cigarette and gave it a light, "Nope. I'm still waiting."

Taking a drag from the cigarette, Jaden followed Kai in step as they surveyed the gun emplacements. The two chit chatted for quite some time about war stories, their bellows of laughter could be heard throughout the entire room. The two men had been good friends for much longer than the ship captain could remember. He was the only person that Jaden could trust running the entire weapons operations aboard the Dead Gun. The man had it all figured out. He had been dealing with weapons systems since before the Galactic Civil War, and knew anything and everything there was to know.

"So," said Jaden, taking the last drag off of the cigarette before dropping it to the ground and stamping it out with his boot, "Make sure you check out the starboard side before stepping out for a break, who knows when I'll get a call for us to be heading out."

"You got it, I'll send a report your way once we're finished."

The two men parted ways, Jaden couldn't believe how intertwined he was with a few of the commanding officers aboard the ship. It was nice to have such a tightly knit crew, it made them stronger as one. Now, heading back to the bridge, Jaden knew it was time to check up on the other officers aboard the ship and make sure all reports checked out. Everything needed to be perfection, just in case the call came for duty.

I hate the waiting game...

The aroma of coffee seeped through the commander's nostrils as he raised the cup towards his mouth. Mmmm honey nut, my favorite. Jaden took a sip from the cup and sat it down on the desk. Rings from the cup could be seen throughout the surface of the desk. It had been a long morning filled with paperwork and administrative duties. Many a day had he spent with stacks of paperwork strung before him, and it all ended the same, a lack of satisfaction. Something new had presented itself though, this time, the loss of a good friend to retirement, as well as the loss of a great squadron commander. Both of the hologram reports he had received earlier in the morning spelled out bad news, which meant the day hadn't started as he would have liked. Oh Casabian, what have you done this time...

This meant that there was an immediate position to be filled, as a new squadron commander was needed for Tuk'ata. This wasn't the first time that the Line Captain had been put in this sort of position, one where he would have to make a decision based on his very own judgment of the pilots within the wing; the effects of those actions most likely taking it's toll on any or possibly every member of the Star Fighter Corps. I've got to get it together, there's too much responsibility on my shoulders to be having a mental battle of my own going on inside of my head. The lack of experience among the pilots of the squadron meant he would either have to hand pick the next squadron commander, or draw out of a hat; either decision not something that he wanted to take on at this point in time. There was already enough on his plate as it was, waiting for new orders directly from the Naval High Command. Whatever the situation, Captain Stormz would have to fill the position for now. He had commanded squadrons in his time, and had the perfect skills to lead the younger pilots to some sort of victory, whatever it may be.

Jaden's personal protocol droid had been creeping around the corridor for some amount of time, which meant that there was much more to be done. The droid never let up on the commander as to his duties for the day, as well as giving him full detail on everything that had been going on whilst he had been dealing with other things. IZ-33 was a top end model, having such a useful amount of knowledge and intellegence to keep the captain on his toes at every turn.

"Izzy, you've been quiet this morning," said Jaden, questioning the intellegence droid.

"Sir, much is to be done. It comes to mind that you haven't nearly completed all of your paperwork for the day, nor collected results from the rest of your officers aboard the ship. I must say, the lack of responsibility on your part is... incriminating, at most."

"I realize this, but there is so much more to be done than," Jaden slid the paperwork across the desk in a huff, "Pencil pushing and keeping papers in order. I feel like I'm a pawn, just sitting here waiting for the next move. I've been commanding this ship for nearly a galactic month now, and yet, I haven't received a single order about what our next course of action will be."

Izzy twitched a bit, looking as if he was glaring at the commanding officer, "Sir, you must give it some more time. The day will come when we are called on for duty, and then you'll be wishing you had it like this."

Jaden laughed, "You know me all to well for a hunk of metal."

Izzy quickly replied, "Hey now sir! I resent that!"

OOC:
There will be more to come on the situation of filling the position of Tuk'ata Squadron commander, this is just a bit of a foreshadow of what is to come.

The crew of the Victory II-class Star Destroyer sat dormant. Screams from ion engines were the only thing that split the silence in the dead of space as they patrolled the perimeter surrounding the ever aging capital ship. The Dead Gun hadn't seen action in such a long period of time that the crew had begun to forget the caliber of battle entirely. Even it's commander, Line Captain Jaden Khaar, was beginning to wonder if he would ever get the chance to take the cruiser on it's first shake down run.

Been here for three months now, and I haven't experience a single slice of excitement.

Throwing the wing's personnel file down onto his desk with a slap, the commander slid his hands over his forehead and through his hair. A sigh of boredom bellowed out of the man as he plopped down onto the chair, now staring at the bright lights above. He couldn't help but to find himself caught up with memories of the past; vivid imagery of the pilot whisking around the battlefield in a fighter, gallivanting alongside his brethren. Those days had been gone for what seemed like forever. What this man would give to put himself in a cockpit and feel the essence of carnage again. To have a sortie with a handful of enemy fighters and climb out on top knowing that he had significantly dominated each of them, and had enjoyed every moment of it.

Jaden was pulled out of his fantasy world by an incoming hologram message. Startled, the man quickly sat up and brought his attention to the desk in front of him where an image of a wookie was materializing. It was Ph'rranix Krazanr, the Vast Empire Navy's Executive Officer. Known to the Navy as Captain Stormz, this beast even looked intimidating on a miniature holo-vid.

[[Daydreaming, are we?]] a male's robotic voice translated the creatures words for the Jaden, as he couldn't understand a word the Captain was saying.

"No sir, just drowning myself in memories of the glory days," said Jaden, now directing his full attention to the image before him.

[[I'm going to be brief, I'm pressed for time and have a meeting with the High Council in a few minutes.]]

"Go ahead sir, I'm all ears," said Jaden.

[[Tuk'ata Squadron has been officially closed, due to the lack of membership. They will be consolidating with Rhegent's Reign. Therefore, we're assigning the Wing back to the Vectra System for a rendezvous. In light of new information that has been handed to me just moments ago, you will be briefed upon arrival for an up and coming mission. I won't go into detail because the information is classified, but you're finally getting the action you've been begging for.]]

"Acknowledged," said Jaden, doing his best to conceal the excitement that was brewing from within. "See you on the other side, sir."

The holo-vid cut out, and the room filled with silence once again.

This comes as interesting news. I know the Rhegent's just returned home from a mission, but it's time I met these pilots and showed them a thing or two about how things are going to be done as a new era is ushered in for the Star Fighter Corps.
