Story 1: First Aid

This was it; the day of the final exam had come. Karash was nervous as he walked to the training facility because he knew if he had failed, his ambition to become a medic would be in tatters. Before he knew it Karash was outside of the room were his fate shall be decided.

“Karash I presume?” said an old, rather eccentric looking man.

“Yes, sir” replied Karash.

“Well come in, and take that look of fear off your face, because you haven’t experienced the half of it yet” said the man, who now had a large grin on his face.

The room was full of equipment, books and other odd looking items, though the thing that stood out was the solitary desk that sat in the middle of the room with, what was obviously, Karash’s exam sat on it.

“I am Professor Sinal and I will be examining you, now sit” he said, with an ever growing tone of enjoyment in his voice.

Karash sat at his desk, took a deep breathe and began. Know the pressure was on, Karash had two hours to complete what seemed like an impossible task and he ‘Professor Sinal’ staring at him, like he was a piece of meat.

“Question one: What are the primary objectives of each case requiring first aid?”

“Easy” Karash, thought.

‘The primary objectives are described as the three P’s. The first is to preserve life – this means to stop the person from dying. The second is to prevent further injury – this is to stop any further injury, stop the current injury from developing and if possible to relieve pain. The third p is  promote recovery – this it to do anything you can to help the victim recover.’

The first question was answered. Karash was growing slightly more confident as he answered that with ease, however one look at the next question and Karash was right back were he started. As he looked up Karash noticed that the Professor had not taken his eyes of Karash once. But Karash new he had no time to waste and ploughed on regardless.

“Question two: State the ABC’s of first aid and how they can be applied to an emergency?”

‘The ABC’s are airways, breathing and circulation. The airways of an unconscious person may have become blocked and therefore making it difficult for them to breathe. To clear the airways place two fingers on the persons chin, while placing the other hand on the person’s neck and tilting the head backwards. Be extremely careful whilst tilting the head, because the person’s neck may be injured. This is done to ensure the tongue is not blocking the airway.
Next the persons breathing should be checked, place your face near their mouth and feel breath on your cheek, or place your hand near their mount and feel moisture. If the person is not breathing begin mouth to mouth resuscitation, pinch their nose and place your mouth over theirs. Blow into their mouth, ensuring the mouth is tightly sealed with yours (ensuring no loss of air). You should give about ten breaths every minute. Continue to do this until breathing commences…’

Things were going well, Karash seemed to remember what to do and he still was within time. But he was starting to go off track, so he buckled down and continued.

‘… C stands for circulation. To check circulation the persons pulse should be checked, this can be done at either the neck or wrist, two fingers should be placed on this area, if no pulse is felt than chest compression should be used to restart the heart. Place your hands were the breastbone and ribs meet, lock fingers together and begin compressions. Around 80 a minute, but is the person is also not breathing alternate between two breathes to every 15 compressions. If the person is bleeding apply pressure to wound for around 15 minutes.’

The next few questions were easy and required little thought, Karash just continued to scribble on the page. But Karash’s nightmare then appeared on the page.

“Question 10: Describe the recovery position.”

Now Karash felt nervous for the first time, he could never remember the recovery position. He mind was full of a million different answers, but he had to write something, so he picked which sounded most logical and began to write.

‘After checking the ABC’s bend the persons nearest arm to you, and placing it by there head. Then bring the other hand across the chest and place it yours, then with your other hand pull up the furthest leg and lie the person in this position.’

Karash continued to scribble down words and just as he finished the last question.

“Stop, give me that and get ready for the second part of your test” shouted Sinal.

“Sir, what is the second part?” Karash asked.

“The second part is practical and involves me evaluating you in a simulation module” said the Sinal with that grin reappearing on his face.

‘Practical’, Karash did not know he would be examined on this at the same time. But before he had any further time to think about it…

“Right, you will be given two situations which you will be required to remedy, and after that you will leave.” That grin was so big by now it nearly didn’t fit on his face.

So Karash stepped into the simulator and the module began. He was in a battle zone, there were bullets shooting everywhere, explosions and screams everywhere.

“Quick, you we need your help” shouted a voice.
There was a trooper lying in the mud, with severe burns down the left side of his face and arm. Something had to be done, but it was two dangerous here, he had to be moved.

“You two help me move him behind this rock over here, NOW!”

Karash could feel the adrenaline rushing through him, even though this was only a simulator Karash felt responsible for this troopers life. So Karash took a deep breathe and began to cheek the troopers ABC’s; his airways were clear, his breathing and heart rate were increased but that was to be expected under the circumstances.

“One of you get the sterile bandages out of my medical bag and soak it in cold water,” ordered Karash.

Karash knew that adding water directly to the wound would send the trooper into shock but the bandage would help keep it cool, relieve pain and protect from infection.

“Now I need to raise your arm above your head to help blood circulation, it will hurt but do not resist the movement,” said Karash.

Karash raised the troopers arm and this was accompanied by a horrific scream, but he held his arm in this position.

“Now one of you get in contact with headquarters and arrange for this man to be evacuated to a hospital,” with that the scene changed and Karash was in the academy with a man lying on the floor.

“What’s happened?” asked Karash

“I fell and cut open my leg,” replied the man.

Karash pulled a sterile cloth from his medical bag and applied pressure to the wound to stop the bleeding. He held it there for about 20 minuets, whilst trying to calm the man down, who was clearly in shock.

“Alright I am going to have to flush this wound to remove any dirt, it will sting. Then I’m going to cover it with an antiseptic bandage,” explained Karash.

The man began to wriggle in pain which made it very difficult to properly apply the bandage. After instructing the man to change the bandage daily, do not apply a bandage once a scab has formed and to get to a doctor if it appears infected; the simulation ended.

“You may leave, you will know your results soon enough,” barked Sinal.

Karash left the room; he suspected he had done well because of the sour look that was on professor Sinal’s face.

OOC:
Nice length for a first post. I like the detail about basic first aid you've included as well. My only gripe is that the level of detail comes undone in the last few paragraphs. I'm no medical expert, but I don't think throwing water on burns would do an awful lot to treat them. Make sure to explain why Karash is reacting the way he is to certain injuries, I'm sure it wouldn't be difficult to do some research about treating various wounds

Story 2: Bacta Therapy

Karash was back at the medical training facility and preparing to enter the bacta therapy centre. This part of his training was not worrying Karash too much; he had studied this before and there was not a person in the empire who had not dealt with bacta before. However there was one thing that made Karash nervous, he really did not want to be examined by professor Sinal again. With one last thought Karash entered the bacta therapy centre.

“Greetings I am bacta droid B7-T6, I have been instructed to tell you that you must first complete the theoretical test on the data pad,” the droid made gestures to a data pad in the corner.

“Where is the examiner?” asked Karash.

“Professor Sinal will be here shortly, you may begin as soon as you are ready,” said the droid.

Karash began to take in his surroundings. It was a typical training room there were no windows, noting on the walls, a large holonet projector at the front but the only difference was the door that was not the one Karash came in from. Karash sat and the droid made a gesture that he could begin, the test was exactly the same as the others that he had seen before.

“Question one: What is bacta and how does it work?”

Karash took a moment to think and then began to write.

Bacta is a synthetic chemical that consists of a gelatinous, translucent red alazhi and kavam bacterial particles that were mixed within a colorless, viscous fluid known as ambori. Once a patient has been exposed to bacta, the bacterium within it travel to the site of wounds and promote rapid cellular regeneration.

Bacta seemed to be an odd topic to choose as an examination area because everybody within the empire had used it to help their injuries. But Karash had to carry on with the examination because the time was ticking on.

“Question two: How can bacta be administered and why?”

Bacta can be administered by patches, this would be used on small cuts and scratches's. An injection could be used for repair of muscles or minor organ repair. The bacta can be swallowed to fix minor internal injuries. The bacta can be sprayed on to burns or cuts. For severe internal or external wounds the patient can be submerged in a bacta tank for a specific amount of time.

A noise was coming from the door that Karash had seen earlier, it sounded like a siren, followed by shouting. Karash was deeply intrigued to what was happening, but it was then he remembered about the test.

“Carry on, do not worry about that,” said the droid.

Karash looked down at his test and carried on with the test, the following answers just seemed to flow from Karash’s mind. The examination seemed to get easier as it want on, it was when he got to the final question that Karash experienced problems.

“Question fifteen: Why is the period of time spent in a bacta tank an important factor?”

It was not that Karash did not know the answer it was just that it was very difficult to explain. Karash sat for a moment and then began to write.

Time is an important factor in bacta therapy because if a patient spends to little time in the tank they will not be healed, which could lead to them suffering severe problems on leaving the tank. However a patient is left in the tank for too long they will experience overgrowth, this could be anything from cancer cells to an extra limb forming.’

That was it the test was over; the only problem now is what was waiting for Karash on the other side of that door.

“I have instructed to tell you to walk through this door and await further instruction,” said the droid.

“What’s in there?” Karash asked.

“Hurry, they are waiting for you,” replied the droid.

Karash made his way over to the door, with a million different things passing through his head; he put a hand on the door and pushed it open. Karash had walked into a bacta therapy chamber. He could see a bacta tank; it was a large tube shaped object with metal fittings at either end, there were pipes coming from the tank that were passing fluid through them, the tank was full bacta as well as a body suspended in there.

“Come over here boy” said a voice.

Karash turned his and saw professor Sinal standing there arms folded and that same bitter face scowling at him.

“Sir, what do I have to do?” Karash asked.

“Well if you stopping twittering on and let me speak, I will tell you,” snapped Sinal. “This is a bacta tank, will be expected to operate it, monitor what is in side of it as well as act correctly in an emergency situation. You will not be able to threaten this person’s life as the droid will correct any mistakes you make,” said Sinal.

Karash gave a curious look at the tank, how was he meant to operate this piece of machinery on his own when he had never done so before. His mind then flitted back to the shouting he had heard earlier.

“Professor, when I was in the other room I heard shouting, what was…”
“You’ll find out,” Sinal now had an ominous smirk on his face.

“First enter this persons details in to the control panel” said Sinal, handing Karash a data pad with the persons details on.

Karash glanced over the details and then began to type in to the control panel.

Name: Aya Perro
Age: 27
Gender: Female
Species: Humanoid
Height: 5 foot 9 inches
Weight: 120 lbs
Injuries: Damage to liver, kidney, heart and lungs; tissue missing on both arms and left leg.
Time Period: At least one month, pending further evaluation.’

Karash glanced over the details once more and then submitted the data to the control panel. He then looked at the droid who was fiddling with a piece of equipment and professor Sinal returned a disapproving look.

“Sir I have completed the task, what next?” asked Karash

“You will sit and observe the patient until a time when you are told to stop,” replied the professor.

So Karash sat and watched the patient, after a very short period of time he became very bored and started to read all of the patient’s details. It appeared that she was landing a shuttle when she came under fire from rebel troopers, the ship crash landed injuring all aboard. More time passed and now Karash was out of his mind with boredom and just as he felt he might fall asleep.

BEEP, BEEP, BEEP…” a siren was going off.

“The patient’s heart rate is increasing, breathing rate is dropping and there seems to be swelling all over her body,” stated the droid.

“Empty the tank immediately and inject her with an anti-allergenic,” said Karash. “Once you’ve done that get her to surgery” said Karash.

“Why?” asked Sinal, who seemed to have just reappeared.

“Because of the damage done to her liver and kidneys she is unable to properly filter the bacta. So she should have a prosthetic filter fitted, until her organs have properly regenerated,” answered Karash.

“Very well, your examination is over, I will tell you when I have evaluated your performance,” Said professor Sinal, who had a very depressed look upon his face.

“Sir, what was that scream earlier?” asked Karash.
“The student before you fainted when that siren went off,” said Sinal, a slight grin was appearing on his face. “Now get out!” he ordered.

Karash left the room, knowing that he did well because of the mutterings that were coming from professor Sinal as he left the room.

OOC:
I'm going to ask that you go ahead and add a little more detail and length to this one before I grant you a pass. Yes, bacta is an important component of the SW universe, but it's not really explained at all throughout your post. Additionally, I'm not quite sure how Karash is expected to fill in patient details such as age, weight etc. since he would be unable to tell just by examining a patient from a distance. Perhaps have these basic details provided to you, then have Karash calculate the necessary time for recovery. Something that actively sees your character understanding and implementing bacta technology. Any questions be sure to PM me.

OOC:
Final Grading: Wow, much much better Karash. Great work, you've passed this story with flying colors. Looking forward to the next one

Story 3: Pathology (humanoid)

Karash was becoming used to the sight of the medical training facilities, not only that but the sight of it was becoming less intimidating. As he walked into the reception area the same droids greeted visitors at the door, the same students were loitering in the corridors and he was greeted by the same sour face as he walked into his class room. However as he stepped through the doorway there was no one there, Karash glanced around the room again but still nothing accept a data pad sitting on the desk. Karash went over and activated the message that was being stored within it.

“If you have managed to realise that this message is intended for you, then pay attention to the following instructions,” the machine had produced a small image of professor Sinal, who was in his usual foul mood. “You have been given your first field assignment; you are going to go a medical centre and will have to diagnose and suggest treatments to patients.”

Karash was stunned and could not quite believe that he would be responsible for people’s lives, even though he was only going to a medical centre and would be lucky to see anything more than a cold.

“There will be transport waiting for you at midday, do not be late!” the message had ended, though Karash thought he heard Sinal say “wouldn’t want to be one of the poor buggers he looks after.”

Karash was going to go over the details again but he hadn’t realised what the time was and he only had fifteen minutes to get to the transport dock. As he rushed to get to the other side of the training centre he wondered where professor Sinal was because he would love to get the chance to see Karash fail. Not only that, but Karash was getting increasingly nervous about his upcoming task.
Karash managed to reach the transport in time; he was greeted by a 3P0 series droid.

“Greetings sir, I am T-3PO. I have been instructed take you to the medical centre, deal with all formalities and answer any questions you may have,” said the droid in a very friendly manner.

“Where is the professor?” asked Karash

“That information is classified, but I am happy to help in any other areas” replied the droid.

“What exactly am I doing today?” asked Karash, changing the subject completely.

“You will be diagnosing illness in your patients and then providing a suitable treatment,” replied the droid.

“Just one more question, what if I make the wrong choice?” Karash asked, with a slight touch of apprehension in his voice.

“There will be medical droids in there to assist you and your diagnosis and treatment will be analysed by a qualified medic. We are here sir, would you please exit the craft,” said T-3PO.

As Karash entered the medical centre the first thing that he noticed was the amount of people that were sitting and waiting to be seen. It was then a Twi’lek woman came up to him.

“Right, you must be Karash, I don’t have any time to go over everything,” she was clearly rushed and out of breath. “All you have to do is treat a few cases, nothing to serious, your droid will go through all the paperwork; there is a 2-1B medical droid in there that will help,” with that the woman run back off in to her surgery.

“I will go and speak with the centres protocol droid and sort everything out, I believe you are in room 2B,” then T-3PO gave a slight bow and also left Karash.

Karash was a bit confused by the way things had just been thrown at him but he knew he had to continue if he wanted to pass. He walked through the area of sick people, past a couple of rooms and finally he came to ‘2B’, he took one last deep breathe and entered.

“Hello, I’m Karash and…”

“I know who you are, now get ready to work,” this droid must have been programmed by professor Sinal because it sounded just like him.

“OK” Karash said, taken back a little

The droid pressed a button that was to signal the patient in, then turned and began to fiddle with some equipment. Karash started to take in his surroundings and the room was exactly what he expected; there was small desk and chair, an examination table, a cupboard next to where the droid was standing with different equipment in it and medical posters covered the wall.

Knock, Knock’ the noise had made Karash jump, this was it, so with one final breath Karash said

“Come in”

In came an elderly looking woman, who shuffled over to the desk and sat down.

“How may I help you?” asked Karash

“My name is Elsie Parmaron, and I have got a blocked nose, sore throat and pain around my face.”

Karash looked at the woman for a moment, she had swelling around the nose and mucus was constantly pouring from here nose. Karash took another moment to gather his thoughts and told the woman,

“It seems to be you just have a case of Balmorra flu, have you had your flu vaccination?” enquired Karash. The woman replied by shaking her head. “Then I’ll do that for you know.”

Karash then told the droid to the give the woman her vaccination, which it was not happy about and seemed to whine the entire time.

“Thank you,” the woman said as she left office.

Karash nodded back to her

“How did I do?” asked Karash

“I think the judgment was reasonable, however I do not carry out menial tasks, I am a sophisticated piece of technology,” snapped the droid, who was increasingly sounding like Sinal.

'Knock, Knock' that was the door again, Karash gathered himself and invited the person in.

Small child and his mother walked in, the boy was covered in red spots.

“What is the problem?” asked Karash

“My son is covered in these red spots, he says they are really itchy and he won’t stop scratching,” Replied the woman.

“Alright, could you please get on the examination table,” said Karash

The boy stood up and then sat back down on the examination table, Karash put his gloves on and then began to look at the boy. He checked his stomach and back, and applied pressure to the boys’ pressure points. After instructing the boy to sit back down Karash give his diagnosis.

“Your son just has a case of nerf pox; I will prescribe you some cream to stop the itching. If it has not cleared up in a week come back,” said Karash.

After the people left, Karash let a huge grin appear on his face, to which the droid behind him appeared to sigh.

“That was an easy one,” said the droid mockingly.

It was just then that those knocks rang out again.

“Come in,” said Karash.

A woman walked in limping.

“I tripped and fell the other day, now a large bruise has appeared on my ankle and I find it difficult to walk,” said the woman.

Karash asked the woman to get on the examination table. He carried out a few tests, he pushed her pressure points, checked the pulse in her foot and examine the bruise; the woman was in obvious pain when he did this.
“It appears to be just bruised and the pulse in your foot is fine, but you will have to be on crutches to keep the weight off it. I will also prescribe some anti-inflammatory tablets, and if the swelling has not gone down in a week get to hospital to have it checked,” explained Karash.

The woman smiled and left the office. Karash turned to the droid, and asked

“How am I doing?”

“I would have had that scanned,” replied the droid.

The day continued with no real excitement and the same problems seemed to be occurring; nerf pox, flu, stomach bugs, infections, pregnancy and broken bones. But just before the day ended at six o’clock a man came in with a large cut down his arm that was clearly infected.

“I suspect that this cut is infected, I will need to take a sample for analysis,” Karash said. He then told the droid to analyse the sample he had taken.

“It seems to be a Merthian infection and it needs antibiotics,” said the droid.

“As you have just heard you have an infection, so keep it covered up, clean it daily and take the prescribed antibiotics. If the infection does not get better in three to four days come back.” Said Karash

As the man left Karash realised that he just finished the task, he had done it and he did not needed to be corrected by the droid once. It was then that the droid began to speak

“You may leave now boy, your job here is finished,” barked the droid

“Professor Sinal?” asked Karash.

“Oh your powers of deduction are amazing, of course it is me you stupid boy. Now get out!” shouted the droid bearing Sinal’s voice.

Karash had suspected all day that droid was Sinal’s twin but never had he imagined that it actually was. But as he made his was to the exit T-3PO reproached.

“Good evening sir, did it go well?” asked the droid.

“I think so and that droid was professor Sinal, did you know?” asked Karash

“Yes sir, I hope you don’t mind I was under strict orders not to tell you,” apologised the droid.

“Its fine, well I had better get home, thank you for your help,” said Karash

Karash left T-3P0 standing at the transport dock, as he got on to the transport he thought; ‘I wonder what I’ll have to do next’.

Story 4: Advanced Chemistry Biology (humanoid)

It was very early in the morning and Karash was still in bed when he was awoken by the sound of his data pad receiving a message. At that very moment all Karash could think was ‘sleep’, but that stupid little machine kept making noises, so with one final push Karash awoke. He went over to his data pad and looked at the message that was from administrative droids at the medical training facilities.

“It has been decided that you shall come in today for the next part of you training, if this is an inconvenience to you please contact us immediately,” and with that the message ended.

“Why today, on my day off” Karash moaned to himself.

But he had no choice to start to get ready and make his way over to the medical training facility. It was a miserable day and what made Karash feel even worse was the fact that while he was working, everyone else was enjoying their day off. As he entered the building there was an eerie feeling as there was no one else there, it appeared that everyone except Karash was enjoying their day off.

“Hurry up, we don’t have all day” snapped a familiar voice.

“Good morning sir,” Karash replied.

“What’s good about it, I was told that I will have to carry on your training on my day off,” Sinal carried on ranting.

“It’s not my fault” whispered Karash.

Professor Sinal then spun on the spot a gave Karash a look that, if possible, could of killed him. Although it only lasted a moment Karash could feel that the day was only going to get worse.

“I suppose I had better tell you why you’re here,” said Sinal. “The next section of your course is called Advanced Chemical Biology and deals with the how the body works at a chemical level,” the professor continued “But first you will do some basic microscope work.”

As professor Sinal finished his sentence he turned and waved in a droid, who Karash knew, was T-3PO. The droid was pushing in small trolley that was carrying on it a microscope.

“Hello sir,” said T-3PO.

“Hello,” replied Karash.

“Just put that there and get back to work,” snapped Sinal

T-3PO then turned and left the room without saying another word, although he did seem a little down heartened. However Karash did not dwell on the droid because his attention had been drawn to the microscope and the slides sitting next to it, there was also a large data pad sat next to the other items.
“You will be expected to identify what each one of these slides is. Do you understand,” asked Sinal.

“Professor…”

“Begin,” interrupted Sinal.

Things were progressing as they usually did; with Karash beginning to panic and Sinal watching him like some grotesque old gargoyle. But there was no time to wait as there were several slides to examine and evaluate, so Karash switched on the data pad and began to read.

“There are several slides available to you, you must look at each of them and then answer the questions listed on the following examination.”

Karash then began to read over the exam itself.

Question one: What is the substance shown in the first slide and what does it do?

Karash then placed the slide on to the microscope, Lent over and looked at what the slide contained. Once he had looked he began to write.

The substance shown in slide one is a Staphylococcus bacterium. The bacteria causes disease by secreting toxins that cause adverse effects on the human body, they are commonly found in food substances.’

Karash thought that this was so boring but knew that he had to continue with the examination.

Question two: What is the substances in slide two and what does it do?

The substance shown is a common cold virus. The virus causes what is known as the common cold and has symptoms that include over production of mucus, sore throats and coughing and loss of appetite.

Karash continued to examine the slides given to him, each of which showed an equally boring cell that seemed to be dead or in suspended animation. He looked up for a moment and through look over to professor Sinal, who was at that time gleaming at the fact he was able to mark down a junior medic for failing the basic exam. As he looked back down at his exam he realised that he was on the last question:

Question ten: What is a platelet?

A platelet is small cytoplamic body that is derived from a cell that is involved in the clotting of cells. If too little of these occur excessive bleeding occurs but is too many of these occur blood can clot within arteries and other vessels.

Karash had managed to finish the test, not only that but he had finished it easily and was looking forward to leaving, things were not going to be as bad as he had thought.

“Professor I have finished,” said Karash.

“Well it took you long enough, right lets move on to section two.” Sinal then continued after he saw the look on Karash’s face “You did think we were finished, no there is a lot more yet.”

Karash’s heart sank at the thought of having to do more work; there was still enough of the day left for Karash enjoy himself. He looked over at professor Sinal who was mumbling to himself, he then looked over to the door that led into Sinal’s office and wondered what ‘work’ T-3PO had to do.

“You will find out what the droid is doing soon enough,” said Sinal.

‘How does he do that’ Karash thought to himself; Sinal always seemed to know what he was thinking and answer questions before Karash had asked them.

“The next part of today’s examination involves me asking you the effects of certain drugs on the body and how to counteract certain poisons,” explained Sinal.

There was something odd about Sinal because he spoke those words in a very sincere manner without a hint of sarcasm. Though that thought was quickly removed when professor Sinal brought out what appeared to be an analyses droid.

“I will ask you the questions and you will give an answer, the analyses droid will determine whether you are correct or not,” said Sinal, who was beginning to return to his usual tone.

“Is this the last task for today professor?” asked Karash.

“That is not for you to be concerned about,” snapped Sinal. He then began the test “What is the effect of paracetamol on the body?” asked Sinal.

“Paracetamol reduces the amount of pro-inflammatory chemicals and therefore reduces fever and pain. However this does not reduce the effects of swelling. Over dosing can be fatal and taking them over a long period of time can led to kidney and liver damage and stomach ulcers,” explained Karash.

There were a number of beeps from the analyses droid, Karash was hoping that they were positive but before he had any more time to think about it professor Sinal began to read the next question.

“What is fluoxetine and what are side-effects of it?”

Karash stood there for a moment and had to think hard about what fluoxetine was, but it was not to long before he worked it out.

“This is an antidepressant drug that is used on those who suffer from depression. It can cause nausea, insomnia, drowsiness, loss of strength and anxiety.”

Karash thought that things were going well but at the same time he was hoping that things were nearly finished. Professor Sinal continued to read out the questions and the droid continued beeping; they had then reached the second part of the examination that was titled poisoned.

“What are the effects of neurotoxins on the body,” asked Sinal, who was becoming more and more annoyed at the length of this examination.

“A neurotoxin is a poisonous substance that affects the body’s nervous system and an example of this is slotoxin,” answered Karash

“Right, this is the last question. What is a hemotoxin?”

“A hemotoxin is a toxin that destroys red blood and is transmitted through the blood,” said Karash.

Karash felt a surge of relief fly over him at thought that he could finally go home and enjoy the rest of his day off.

“Just one more section to go and we can both leave,” Sinal trailed off at the end of his sentence.

Just as Sinal finished the end of his sentence, T-3PO walked back I carrying another microscope and another two slides. Once again a great feeling of depression fell over Karash, though the look on Karash’s face seemed to cheer-up professor Sinal.

“Look at the slides and then explain what is happening in each of them,” said Sinal.

“Will that be all sir,” asked T-3PO.

“Take that analyses droid away and then you may leave,” barked Sinal.

Karash watched the droids leave and then looked at what was within the first slide. This one was not like the others though; the cells within it were alive and Karash knew exactly what was happening.

“These cells are undergoing mitosis or in other words they are reproducing. They also appear to be white blood cells,” said Karash.

Karash then removed the first slide and put the second one in its place and looked at what was happening. There were platelets and red blood cells and they appeared to solidifying and forming a clot.

“The cells are ‘clotting’; they are platelets and red blood cells. This would occur if a person had pierced the skin,” explained Karash.

“Finally, you may leave and I hope not to see you for a while,” said Sinal.

Karash came away from the equipment and began to walk to the door, he then felt slightly sad for professor Sinal who would now have to clear the room and mark Karash’s examination. This was quickly replaced when Karash exited the training facility and saw that it was dark, instead of the day of relaxation he had planned, he had to go to bed.

“Oh well,” he said to himself and began to walk home.

OOC:
Another good post Karash, I can tell you've done some research for this one. One thing though, drugs like Paracetamol and Fluoxetine wouldn't necessarily be found within the Star Wars universe. Feel free to use your imagination to come up with treatments and medications that might exist in the technologically advanced society that Karash lives in. Apart from that, another pass for you. Move onto your next story when ready.

Story 5: Pharmacology, Field Surgery Injury Screening & Diagnosis, Combat Laboratory Emergency

Karash was once again in the same predicament, nothing but a day full of medicine, moaning teachers and odd droids. So he once again gathered his thoughts and entered Professor Sinal’s classroom.

“Don’t bother to sit down because we have a lot to deal by means with,” squawked Sinal in an odd high voice.

“Good morning professor,” replied Karash.

Sinal continued to speak completely ignoring Karash’s attempts at being civil.

“The next part of your medical training consists of several and will take a little longer than usual. Not only that but you will also have more than one teacher,” explained the professor, who had said that in a much more authoritative voice.

“Why do I need more than one teacher, professor?” asked Karash.

“Because I am not a pharmacologist or a surgeon, now if you do not mind I would like to continue. You must first go to your pharmacology lesson, then come back here for injury screening and diagnosis which will be the end for today. Tomorrow you will undertake field surgery, in a simulator of course, then you will go through the final section and you’ll be finished,” said the professor who took in a depth breath as he finished.

Karash stood there completely bemused by what was just said. He had to do all that in two days and then complete a mystery task at the end of it all.

“Where do I have to go?” asked Karash.

“You will proceed to this room and be there in ten minutes,” baked Sinal.

Karash looked down at the paper, ‘chemistry lab 228’. Karash turned and exited the room. The corridors were crowded with people who were rushing around to get to their classes and droids who were doing all sorts of different tasks.

“In here sir,” said a voice who Karash thought was T-3PO.

Karash looked around but it was not T-3PO, it was another protocol droid who was ready to welcome him into the lab. Karash had passed it in error and was relieved that the droid was there.

“Thanks, is this the pharmacology lab?” enquired Karash.

“Yes it is, Dr Flaris is waiting for you,” answered the droid as he walked off down the corridor.

Karash felt as he did the first time he professor Sinal’s office; the thought of a new teacher that could be worse than Sinal made Karash feel extremely unpleasant. Karash opened the door and saw a middle aged woman standing at the front of the room; she was wearing half-moon spectacles, a lab coat and carrying a data pad.

“Good morning my dear, I assume you are here for your pharmacology lesson,” said Dr Flaris.

She was the exact opposite to Sinal; she seemed kind, considerate and far more engaging than professor Sinal.

“Hello I am Karash and yes I am here to be thought pharmacology,” answered Karash.

“Alright it is best to get things started as soon as possible, but don’t worry it is not too hard. First read through this,” said Dr Flaris.

She then handed Karash the data pad that was full of information, so Karash sat down and began to read.

‘Pharmacology is the study of what happens between living organisms and different chemicals. In medicine pharmacology is used to determine the effects of different medicines on the body and to determine whether they are safe or not…’

Karash continued to read the information, there was nothing really interesting and Karash was beginning to drift off.

“Have you finished?” asked Dr Flaris. “Yes, good all you have to do now is complete this short test and you’ll be finished here.”

‘Not another exam’ Karash thought to himself. But he gathered his thoughts and began.

“Question one: What are the main purposes of pharmacology?”

‘The purposes of pharmacology are to test any drugs that could be used as medicines. The drugs toxicology and side effect on the body are the main things that arte tested.’

“Question two: What does LADME stand for?”

‘This means Liberation, Absorption, Distribution, Metabolism and Excretion; this describes how a drug works within the body.’

The exam continued in exactly the same manner, nothing that was directly linked to medicine. Now Karash was beginning to understand why professor Sinal was not very flattering about this topic, he looked up and was stunned by what he saw; Dr Flaris was smiling at him, it was very different to Sinal glaring at him. It was then Karash remembered he had an exam and so continued.

“Question six: What is Spectacilin’

‘This was a medicine used in the early days of the empire to treat infection, however it was latter found that it caused long term harm to people immune systems. This was happened because it was not tested using LADME.’

Karash had finished the first part of the day and was not looking forward to whatever professor Sinal had waiting for him on his return.

“Well done, I think you’ve passed,” she said. “I think you had better get back to professor Sinal.”

Karash left Dr Flaris lab and began to walk back to Sinal’s office. He had decided that he like Dr Flaris and would look forward to working with her in the future although he still didn’t think the subject was completely relevant. As Karash walked through the door he was welcomed by the usual cruel demeanour.

“I see that you managed to survive her rubbish. But never mind that, sit down,” barked Sinal.

Karash could tell that it was going to be a long afternoon.

“Yes sir,” replied Karash.

“This is the first part to your field surgery section and you will be required to do what I tell you, in preparation for what is waiting for you tomorrow,” snapped the professor.

“If you look to your right you will see a data pad, there are several cases for you to diagnosis and treat,” there was a slight pause. “Well get on with it then,” barked Sinal.

Karash thought that this was slightly similar to his previous course topic of humanoid pathology. But none the less he continued to work.

‘Name: Classified.
Gender: Male.
Injury: Crushed by falling debris.
Severity: Medium.’

“Professor, are these real case studies?” asked Karash.

“Of course they are, now stop asking stupid questions,” barked Sinal.

Karash began to look over the hologram that had been produced.

‘The patient has minor lacerations to his torso and arms. The left arm appears to be dislocated and the right tibia may be broken, it will require an x-ray. Due to the irregular breathing rate the patient’s lung may be punctured and it requires further examination under specialist conditions.’

Karash had noticed something at the stop of the page, ‘only two evaluations are required’.

“Professor?” asked Karash.

“Yes only two evaluations are required, now hurry up before I fail you,” replied Sinal.

‘Name: Classified.
Gender: Female.
Injury: Unknown.
Severity: Found lying on a battle field, high risk.’

Karash looked up at Sinal who instantly replied.

“She died, the person who evaluated her case got it wrong and a injury was missed. That person is now stuck in the academy.”

An odd thought entered Karash’s mind at that point, but he had no time to dwell on it.

‘There are gunshot wounds to her arm and torso. Her left foot is beyond repair and needs amputation; it may be able to be re-grown in a bacta tank. Several ribs are broken and all internal organs need to be checked for damage; there also appears to be damage to her left eye.’

Karash looked over hologram that was laying there; Karash had missed something and he knew it was that same, thing that leads to this person’s death. It was then that Karash noticed it.

‘She also appears to have a cut to the back of the head. This needs to be fully examined under sterile conditions and within specialised conditions.’

“It appears that you have finished, you may go home and prepare for what awaits you tomorrow,” ordered Sinal.

Karash nodded towards the professor and left. He began to walk back to his barracks and hoped that there would be nothing to bad waiting for him in that simulator tomorrow.
Karash entered his house laid down and instantly fell asleep; his dreams were full of what was in store for him. The prospect of the simulator had scarred Sinal more than anything else that he had come across so far.

“BEEP, BEEP!” Karash’s alarm was going off and made him jump out of his skin. He began get up and prepare for his exam. There was a message on his COM link.

“Good morning sir, you are requested to be at professor Sinal’s office in one hour,” it was T-3PO. In the back-ground Karash could here Sinal shouting about not being so nice to people.

Hmm, there's a few spelling mistakes and misused commas, but apart from that it's pretty good. Your speech can feel a little wooden at times however, you could maybe put a little work into that.

Apart from that, good job.

Story 6: RBC (Radiological, Biological, Chemical)

There was a bleeping noise emanating from Karash and it took him a little while to realise that it was his com device; he had been in a daze for the past few hours since he woke up. Karash could not quite believe his eyes when he saw who it was that was trying to contact him and for a moment he thought he was still actually in a dream, or rather a nightmare.

“You are required here immediately to continue your medic training.” The shrill voice of Professor Sinal was once again echoing in Karash’s ears, it had been so long since his last lesson.

“But Professor it is my day off…” Karash did not get to finish his sentence.

“I don’t care if you are having the Emperor around for afternoon tea, you will be here when I tell you!” Then with an odd shriek the old man disappeared.

It had been a long time since Karash had been to any sort of medical training and he wasn’t really looking forward to having to refresh his memory one everything. However what was really worrying Karash was the fact that he had to go and see Professor Sinal who was bound to be in his usual foul and almost toxic mood.

---Some time later---

“Well here goes.” Karash said to himself before entering the domain of the most disliked man he had ever met.

Professor Sinal was sat behind his desk and appeared to be going over some case studies that must have been from other students, he looked jut as Karash remembered him. His was stick thin, with a beak shaped nose and pursed lips, unkempt white hair and a large white lab coat.

“You my boy are late.” Sinal did not bother to look up but just hiss his words at Karash.

“I didn’t think we arranged a specific time?” Karash was puzzled.

“Do not argue with me! Just sit down and listen!” Sinal looked up this time and aimed his words like poison arrows.

There was a single desk stuck right in the middle of the room and it seemed to have data pads scattered around it, there was also a holoprojector placed not to far from the desk; its purpose would become apparent later on in the day.

Professor Sinal stood and began to speak as officially as he could, “Chemical, Biological, Radiological is the entitlement of this section and is probably the most difficult section of the lot. It is unlikely that you will ever use it but you will learn it none the less…” The old man stopped to rifle through a drawer. “The course will be broken down into sections; first you will answer questions based on the evaluation of a possible attack, then you will be given case studies and be expected to identify symptoms and treatments.”

“Is that it?” Karash accidentally said the bit that was meant to be quite outloud.

“Take that tone with me again and will make sure you never leave this damned classroom.” For once the Professors voice was not high pitched but it was deep and seemed to boom.

“Yes, sorry sir.” Karash was a little taken aback by what had just happened.

Sinal glared at Karash for a few moments before speaking again “Very well, you may begin your test.”

The exam was not very long as it only contained ten questions however it seemed that it needed very in-depth answers and Karash also knew that things were never as easy as they seemed.

‘Question one: What signs should you look for after a potential chemical attack?’

Answer: ‘Signs of possible chemical attacks are a lack of any insect or animal life within the area, casualties on a large scale when there has been no air or land battles taken place. Also if there is any low laying cloud that can not be otherwise explained by its surroundings.’

The next part of the exam was just a annoying and long winded but Karash did not find things as difficult as he had expected.

‘Question seven: What are the signs of a possible radiological attack?’

Answer: ‘There are two main signs that will show any possible radiological attack. The first of which is any source that is emitting heat for no know reason and without a external source. The second of which are any objects that emit what appears to be a glow however this will only be in extreme cases.’

Before Karash knew what was happening Sinal snatched away the data pad that Karash had carried out his exam on and flicked through it as though it was a topical magazine. He did not know what to think about the exam he had just done but it seemed to have no medical relevance what so ever, he did however seem to remember it better that the medical stuff so Karash was confident.

“This stuff may not seem to have much medical content but it prepares you for the stuff ahead and if you don’t know what the problem is how can you treat it?” Sinal said before returning to his desk

‘How did he know what I was thinking, how does he always know what I am thinking?’ Karash thought to himself.

“I trust that you have noticed the holoprojector that it placed next to me. Well three patients will appear to you and in some cases I will give you the symptoms and you will give me the diagnosis and in others you will have to work it out yourself.” Professor took a depth breath and pressed a button that started the thing up. “You can begin once the droid tells you the symptoms.”

The droid that had entered the room without Karash noticing was professor Sinal’s down trodden protocol droid T-3PO; the droid gave a slight nod to Karash before he began to speak. “This is a female patient that is in her late thirties and was admitted after a suspected attack by a chemical nerve agent. Would you please describe the symptoms you would expect and any treatment necessary.”

Karash gathered his thoughts for a moment before looking up to see Sinal glaring at him in anticipation. But the words would not leave his mouth, Karash had for some reason frozen.

“Come on boy you have a few more seconds before failure!” Sinal was once again squawking like a bird.

“Err…. Yes I um…” Then the words just popped back into Karash’s head, “The symptoms that I expect to see are runny nose, tightness in the chest and constriction of the pupils in the early stages. Soon after you would expect to see vomiting loss of control of certain bodily functions and in the later stages you would see twitching and jerking and ultimately the victim will become comatose and suffocate. In regards to treatments I would recommend that the patients is quickly given an anticholinergic and then be placed into a bacta tank to prevent long term damage or death.” Karash let out a whine as he stopped speaking.

“This man has been found after an attack and it seems that parts of body are being destroyed at a very slow rate. What kind of attack has the man experienced what is the condition he has likely to be and what help can he be given?” T-3PO asked once again in his usual kind way.

Karash did not hesitate this time because he thought the answer to be obvious, “I think that this man has experienced a biological attack and that the condition he is suffering from would be nano-destroyer virus. In terms of treatment I suggest that he is given a anti-viral drug that can combat such a virus and then be placed in a bacta tank to repair any damage done by the virus. It would also be advisable that all those around him be tested for the virus.”

There was just one more question stood between Karash and the completion of this module but there was only one more possible attack this could have been and it was definitely the most complicated. Then a third man appeared and the sights of him made Karash feel very uncomfortable.

“This man has been exposed to a radiological weapon; please describe any injuries that you suspect and any treatment that you suggest. I should also point out that there are no real medical supplies available.” T-3PO said that and then left the room as his part in the exam had finished.

“This man clearly has severe radiation burns that will need immediate bacta to be applied, however if limited supplied are available that it should be applied sparsely. The patient may also be experiencing radiation poisoning and therefore should be given anti-radiation tablets to combat any sickness. If the patient has experienced severe radiological attacks then it could be possible that mutations will occur and in that case needs immediate bacta tank treatment.” Karash thought he had finished.

“You are in the field no such treatment is available, what can you do?” Sinal was pushing Karash to say something no medic ever wanted to.

“Then the patient is to be made as comfortable as possible and then left to…” Karash was then interrupted again.

“You can go now Karash; I will contact you in due course.” Professor Sinal said, gesturing towards the door.

Karash nodded in the direction of the professor and then left the room hoping that he had done well. However he knew that he had frozen in the middle and actually said he may have to leave a patient to die, suddenly Karash felt a lot worse.

Story 1: Medical Droid Use & Interaction

The place looked different from the last time that Karash was there, it seemed smaller and less intimidating. Perhaps it was because since his last visit to the medical training facility so much had happened to him that such things seemed trivial in comparison to the horrors that inhabited the outside world. In actual fact, this place was like a miniature haven of safety and protection where one could read and learn without the danger of having your head shot off at any moment.

“Corporal Karash, you may now proceed to the examination room.” A male voice emanated from a robot standing behind a computer terminal.

You leave these things too long. You really must come here more often, there will be no dead people coming to see you, no depressed squad leaders and most importantly no one will bother to even talk to you unnecessarily.’ He had clearly forgotten about what was going to be behind that door, the man who was to blame for Karash waiting so long before returning to this place. The cold, cruel, curmudgeonly man that made the Emperor look like a cuddly little Ewok, Professor Sinal.

“Oh it’s you again, I thought you had died.” The hissing noise brought a stark realisation into Karash’s mind.

“Pr... Prof... Sss...” The words would not leave his mouth willingly.

“Don’t babble boy, well close the door before anyone tries to get in!” The old man hissed again.

Professor Sinal was sat in his usual position behind the desk, reading documents over his spectacles and seeming to glare when he came across something that did not meet with his approval. Karash was expecting a verbal assault but nothing came, there was just a deep and resonating silence that in many ways was far worse.

“Professor Sinal I was told that this section was about using medical droids...” Once again Karash was cut off.

“Well then at least you pay attention to something, this about medical droids and there uses. This has little or nothing to do with actual medicine but none the less you must pass in it.” The old man stopped and glared at the trooper, “How they expect you to have an armada of droids in the field I do not know!” The rant continued but in a manner that did not really make any sense.

“When will we be getting started?” The sarcasm oozed from Karash, he momentarily forgot that not all superiors were as willing to take it as Havock was.

“We will start when I decide! Not when your royal highness asks...” The old man’s voice croaked as we spoke, “It will consist of two sections, the first being identification and the second being practical use.”

The professor went over a few more details before Karash was allowed to start the examination; once the word ‘begin’ had been uttered the safe feeling that was previously there had long gone. There was a small holographic projector not too far from Karash that was beginning to whir into action, a series of robots would appear and he would have to fully identify them. The first image appeared and Karash had no idea what was standing before him.

‘What the hell is that? How can you have no idea what it is? You have been looking over the damned things for days and you can’t even tell what the first one is, well you might as well just give up.’ The troopers’ thoughts were getting ever more erratic until they were interrupted.

“Well come on boy, or you will fail.” Sinal squawked out his orders in his usual manner.

Karash focused in on the flickering image that was before him; it had a roughly humanoid torso, three main limbs, its own holoprojector and several trays attached to its torso. The droid really did look highly familiar, any moment now he was sure that the name would leap into his mind and the words would fall out of his mouth.

“It is a GH-7 medical analysis unit.” Karash beamed with pride as he answered.

“Well come on, what does it do?” Sinal snapped.

“It has multiple functions, it can be used purely to analyse but it also can be used to assist during surgical procedure. It is programmed to be more compassionate than other droids to help comfort the sick and injured.” Still beaming he spoke more confidently.

“Alright we are not writing a lonely hearts advertisement, move on to the next.” A slight grin had formed on his face; this did not make Karash feel easy.

Now filled with confidence, the next image flickered into existence and the cold metallic being appeared. This one was a full humanoid shape, its components were visible through its torso, one limb was a servogrip pincer and the other was available for a series of attachments.

“It is a 2-1B surgical droid. As the name suggests it is mainly used during surgical procedures but it can also be used for some diagnostic work, it is usually accompanied by a FX-series medical assistant droid.” The ordeal was over, Karash let out a sigh of relief.

“Do not think are done yet boy, the second part of your examination will begin shortly and that is where the fun will begin.” The grin on his wicked face grew larger as he finished the sentence.

“But professor...” the sentence was not finished.

“But nothing! Now wait for me to get things properly sorted and you will be able to get out of here considerably faster.” For the second time the professors voice seemed more authoritative than sarcastic.

Karash now noticed that the room was divided into two halves and that there was a large amount of noise coming from the second and unseen part of the room. The noises were not identifiable but they were loud and caused unease in his thoughts, it would not be long before the time had come to finish the examination and Karash could not wait.
The door that divided the two halves of the room slowly opened to reveal the menacing figure of Sinal once again, “Right, in you come.” He motioned to Karash.

“What am I going to be doing in here?” Karash asked.

“Well if you keep your mouth closed and allow me to talk, you will find out.” Sinal seemed to quack more than speak.

From what Karash could see there was an operating table with something he hoped wasn’t a person on it, a droid that he, ironically, could not identify and a serious of medical tools that did not appeal to him. Apart from that the room appeared cold and unwelcoming but considering Sinal worked there you could expect nothing more, though the old man had once again drifted out of sight.

“Well come on then, get over here!” The professor ordered. “You are expected to perform a basic diagnostic exam on two patients.”

“What you are going to let me...” not being allowed to finish was starting to annoy Karash.

“Of course we are not giving you real patients, not even I am that cruel.” They were both shocked at the fact that Sinal had just made a half-way attempt at a joke. “You will begin as soon as I have activated that droid, coincidently can you tell me what it is?”

“I am afraid not Sir.” Karash mumbled his words.

“I did not expect you to; it is a MD-0 medical droid that specialises in diagnosis, not often seen but favoured by the empire.” Sinal spoke more like a teacher at this point but quickly reverted to his usual demeanour. “The droid is active, begin.”

“Greetings sir, how may I assist?” The electronic male voice spoke with a quiet dignity.

“Well we better... errr... The patient needs to be diagnosed.” Karash was still unsure of what he was meant to do.

“Battlefield trauma, the patient was blasted several feet into the air by an exploding grenade.” Sinal spoke from behind his observation screen.

The droid raised its sensory hand and placed it on to the patient, a few beeps and whizzes were made but otherwise the droid just stood with his hand placed on the body. It was a very strange thing to see a droid working, silently and without complaint the droid did its duty and then would be expected to just wait for further instruction.

“Analysis complete; broken left femur, dislocated right shoulder, and several lacerations to body, right eye trauma and small amount of internal bleeding.” The droid removed his hand and stood in silence.

“Just for fun, tell me what you would do now?” Sinal said with an element of glee in his voice.

“Place the patient in a bacta tank for one month and then assess the situation again.” Karash said, rebuffing Sinal’s attempt.

“Very well, next patient.” Sinal was back to plain viciousness.

Karash once again gave the droid its instruction and it placed its hand on the new patient, he wondered what it was like to spend your life in the company of Professor Sinal. It could not be easy, even for a droid, to spend your time with a wicked old narcissist but then again the droid could always shut itself off.

“No injuries found, analysis complete.” The droid stepped back and stood in silence.

“Errr... well I am finished then professor.” Karash waited nervously for a response.

The door slid open and the professor walked in, “I am aware of that fact Corporal, you may leave.”

“Thank you sir, when....” Once again Karash was cut off.

“You will be contacted in due course, now get out before I reset this droid to kill you!” He barked out his words.

Stepping out in to the corridor Karash felt a sudden wave of guilt rush over him, though he wasn’t sure why. Was it that the poor droid would be left with Sinal? Or was it that Sinal had no one except a droid for company. These thoughts were quickly interrupted by the bleeping of the com device.

Karash answered the annoying little device seeing it was from the RAIDERS, “How the hell have you done that? What? I will be there immediately.” The device was shut off, “bloody people fall apart as soon as you’ve left them!”

As Karash ran out of the medical training facility, all thoughts of medical droids and lonely old men left his mind.... at least until the next time he was back in Professor Sinal’s office.
