Snipes stared out one of the few observation lounges open to everyone. He stared into the white dotted deep darkness of space. He’d turned the lights low and the smoke from his cigarettes had begun filling the room with its wispy presence, much to the chagrin of the few other inhabitants. But Snipes didn’t have an office on the ISD Dominion, and he preferred a room with a view. He had little room in his mind for them though. Instead it was the mission.

The planet Siczaya III, a volatile, remote rock on the edge of Vast Empire space. It had little intrinsic value, it contained vast mineral and iron reserves, but it was so remote that any mining operation would fail to bring the profits of some equally or less as rich planets and moons closer to the VE core. The seasons each lasted only a month, it went from volcanic and unpredictable, to a rainy season, where it rained acidic liquids, not all of which were water, then those liquids froze and it became a snow covered hell, on par with Alzoc or Hoth, then within a month it was back to another short season of rain, and as the planet neared the sun on its elliptical orbit that rain would eventually evaporate, fast enough that it was actually visible to the human eye, resulting in a rare phenomenon known as ‘reverse rain’, that moisture then blotted out the sky and the whole air became acrid and almost unbreathable as the many old and new volcanoes began spewing their poison ridden clouds into the atmosphere. And the cycle progressed.  The fact that it was the most habital rock in the solar system said something about the harshness of the area. It was also, unfortunately, in a very strategic spot. Of little use to the Vast Empire due to its remoteness and position in the galaxy, however it would be of great use to anyone trying to attack the Vast Empire, as the system sat between two other main systems of the VE and could be used as an excellent starting point for an attack. This was exactly what an unknown Imperial faction was trying to use it for. Snipes and the rest of RAIDERS job was to help with the defense of the moon.

This would not be a pleasant mission. There would be much of death and more of destruction, and if Snipes was whiley enough, quick enough, and strong enough, none of that would be brought down upon his RAIDERS. Despite his irregularities Snipes still cared for the group in his own way, and in some sense he had a degree of respect for them, but to him they were also still children to war, Snipes had been gliding effortlessly through it for a long time now, and he did not yet trust them on their own.

Snipes contemplation was disturbed by the door behind him opening. He did not have to turn around to know who it was. The clank of a sword in its scabbard told him louder than words. It was his ASL, Marka. Snipes didn’t turn. However they few that hadn’t been driven out of the area by Snipes smoking left quickly. Last time the two had been in there together there had been a disagreement and then a fistfight. Snipes had started it, he knew Marka only had the one way to release his aggression, whether he liked to admit it or not, and Snipes wouldn’t have his ASL wandering around being pissed at him, that just would not do.

“Well, sit down, make yourself comfortable.” Snipes said, waving to the chair next to him.

“Just here to let you know we hit ideal launch in half an hour, you asked me to let you know.”

“Thanks,” Snipes said standing, he grabbed a gun, the RW-60 they’d used before, Snipes threw it at Marka, who caught it expertly. “I know it’s not your preference, but use it, stick with the group and don’t go wildcard on me, not on this mission, I have every intention of bringing everyone back again, no one should have to die on such an inglorious rock.”

“You know that’s impossible.”

“Leave me to my delusions.”

“Whatever boss.”

Snipes smiled and strode out of the lounge accompanied by the ASL. He didn’t seem to have gotten over the black eye, Snipes scoffed to himself, he’d already gotten over the split lip. The corridors of the Dominion were all sorts of familiar to Snipes, he’d strode them many times, in many different squads, for many different reasons. Now it strode them with a heavy step. He didn’t want any part of this mission, it was going to be a mess, a grueling, inhumane mess. Anyone who tried to preserve their morality and who put any faith in the laws of war would not last. Snipes could already envision the battleground, he hungered the be there himself, but the responsibility he had to his troops kept him from enjoying the slaughter that was to come. If he could help it none of them would die.

RAIDERS Temporary Quarters, VSD Dominion

The barracks were filled with the chatter of the troopers as they discussed the upcoming mission. Here and there, one of the troopers was Only a few of the Raiders remained aloof, watching the group discussing the upcoming mission. Under his helmet, Dante's face was grim. He'd seen the briefing, and he didn't like what he felt was going to happen.

Between the casualties from the past few missions and a pair of last minute transfers, RAIDERS had been operating at half capacity. As a result, the powers that be had shipped in several Academy graduates. Dante had seen them practicing earlier, and he wasn't impressed. Not that they were incompetent; one or two had aim better than his own.

No, it was their experience that he was worried about. None of them had seen action outside of the sims, let alone combat. In theory, the Vast Imperial training regimen prepared its subjects for a variety of combat situations and enabled them to work efficiently with other troopers to complete a goal. In practice, there was no way for instructors to recreate war in a sanitized, safe environment; no way to replicate the mixture of shock and fear as energy beams started flying and people you had grown to know and respect started falling. Some dealt with it; some didn't. There was no way to tell beforehand.

That, Dante mused, was what was so worrying about the composition of Raiders Squad. If something happened, and the recruits lost it the casualties would be catastrophic. Add that to the nature of the mission, and it was a bloodbath waiting to happen.

He was considerably more confident in the last addition to the RAIDERS, Lance Corporal Leth. Like his new Squad Leader, Leth had been a Wraith. The Wraiths had a reputation for efficiency, but Dante had some serious doubts as to whether the commando was suited for direct combat on the scale they were facing.

There was a whine, and a male human’s voice echoed through the room.

“Raiders, report to Hanger Bay Aleph. Raiders, report to Hanger Bay Aleph.”

The discussions stopped and the Raiders filed out as one into the Dominion's hallways. Walking past crewmen and other stormtroopers, Dante couldn't help but wonder how many would still be alive at the end of the battle. As he remembered, the barracks were fairly close to the hangers, ensuring the RAIDERS wouldn't have long before they were dropped into action once again. The squad took a turbolift down, then made their way through several corridors. Another lift later, they were in the Dominion's main hanger. The floor was a bustle of activity, with techs swarming over transports and fighters. There was a crackle of electricity as a suited figure wielded a fusion cutter, and loading droids stomped across the hanger with the last few missiles and explosives.

Looking around the hanger, Dante noticed their squad leader leaning against an LAATi with a rifle propped up besides him. The troopers made their way through the maze of equipment and vehicles and filed into the vehicle. Sniping 101, who was already seated, nodded.

"The Dominion will be emerging from hyperspace in five minutes. We'll be part of the first wave of transports sent planet-side."

As if to underscore the point, there was a shudder in the floor, and deceleration sirens began to blare. The droids and techs retreated from the hanger, and pilots rushed to the boarding ramps and cockpits. Dante felt the ship lurch slightly, then stabilize briefly before a series of thumps shook the LAATi.

Looks like something's gone wrong.

The ceiling mounted screen flickered, then came to life. The image quality was poor, but Dante could make out a trio of angular shapes attacking a larger Star Destroyer. Subtexts identified the largest one as the Vast Imperial Star Destroyer Reclaimer and its attackers as the Venators Morgoth and Ungoliant. The third ship in the system was the Remnant Victory-II Dis, which was currently bearing down on the Dominion. Fire lanced over the viewscreen, and the feed was momentarily replaced by static. Seconds later, it came back online, but was shaking slightly as a nearby turbolaser battery opened fire. The two Star Destroyers exchanged fire as they moved closer to each other. The hanger shook as the barrage began to impact on the Dominion's shields.

The Imperial gunship's engines growled as its repulsorlifts lifted the vessel from the hanger bay floor, then quieted to a constant humming. The LAATi passed through the hanger bay shield, and abruptly banked sharply to the left as a hostile fighter opened fire. Green energy impacted onto the craft, only to be dissipated by the energy shield, which began to flicker under sunsequent impacts. Inside the transport, several cases of ammunition came loose, flying in all directions.

Forcing himself to be calm, Dante stared at the viewscreen. The view was dominated by the dull, red-orange sphere that was Siczaya III. Several hundred meters above them, the Dominion and the Dis were exchanging broadsides, with their fighter screens interlacing and dissolving in bursts of turbolaser fire. Missiles followed curving trajectories through the void, impacting on the rogue Victory-II's armour plating. Vaporized plating and gases erupted from the impact sites, followed by secondary explosions, but the Dis continued to return fire.

A series of impacts on the Raiders LAATi shook Dante from his reverie. Another TIE fighter had found the transport and was firing on its engines. There was a dull thump, and the craft shook.

"Left engine took a hit!" Lieutenant Surian yelled. "Hang on to your helmets, RAIDERS. This is going to get rough!"

With that, she sent the craft spinning down towards the planet. The TIE followed, but neglected to maneuver.

"Got you, you dirty..."

The barrage of energy from the rear laser turret tore the Remnant starfighter's shield away and reduced the fighter to a cloud of ionized gas and durasteel fragments. There were whoops from several of the RAIDERS, and the pilot grinned. With the hostile greased, she began to check the damage to the gunship and to compensate for it. The troop bay was a bustle of activity as the RAIDERS began to relax, with some securing ordnance that had come loose during the flight. Sure that the ordeal was over, Dante reached out for his deece, conducting a last minute-check. He would be needing it very soon.

Lieutenant Surian exhaled with relief, and relaxed her grip on the ship's controls. They had somehow survived the attacks with minimal damage, though one engine was currently down to 78% operational capacity. Diverting as much power as possible to the LAATi's engines, she flew the transport towards the second wave of dropships from the Dominion.

Orders began to appear on a holopanel, and she adjusted her angle of descent and position to match. The convoy began to sink through the planet's atmosphere, leaving the fracas in low orbit to rage on. The two dozen craft sank down towards the planet, leaving white trails in their wake.

They passed through the crimson upper cloud layers and began to adjust their pitch as air resistance began to be a problem. Energy shields flickered as reentry heat began to distort the air around the ships, and a cuccoon of superheated air began to form around the flat undersides of the ships. Inside the transports, the temperature rose notably, and Dante reflexively reached up to wipe the sweat from his forehead, only to have his fingers brush against the plastoid of his helmet.

Stay calm. There's nothing you can do until you reach planetside.

As suddenly as it had begun, the shaking stopped. One by one, the LAATi's dropped through the cloud layers, more or less intact. Looking at the viewscreen, Dante got his first glimpse of Siczaya III.

In all directions, there was nothing but dust. In the distance, thick clouds of smog covered up the chains of volcanoes spewing gases into the atmosphere and creating the thick cloud layers that had proven so troublesome on their way down. The gunships turned sharply, then sank down. As they plumeted, lines in the dust became visible, as did shapes which Dante recognized as SPHAT and AT-TE walkers. The guns turned to track the group, and he felt a moment of disquiet. If they fired, there wouldn't be anything left of the gunship, shielded or not. A moment later, they turned back to their original positions and Dante exhaled.

The LAATi's slowed, then slowly landed. The engines slowly shut down, their purr fading into silence. The side hatches hissed open, and atmosphere flooded into the ship. The helmet filters removed most of the smell and airborne particles, but Dante could still taste the acrid air. It smelled faintly of sulfur, and made breathing difficult, even with the helmet. He shuffled from foot to foot, uncomfortably reminded of Mustafar, the way the planet had smelled.

Removing the straps keeping him in in his seat, Sniping 101 waved the troopers out of the transport. Service droids rushed past them and towards the transport, their limbs wielding various tools. The RAIDERS were directed towards a designated plastent, one of many scattered throughout the desert. The temporary habitats were construted from synthatex strips laid over frames of memory metal, and were fairly sturdy. A Lieutenant was waiting outside the tent. Looking the RAIDERS over, he snorted.

"Welcome to Hell, boys."

“Hell is what you make of it.” Snipes grunted. It didn’t make any sense, but the Luey nodded and let Snipes through.

Snipes wandered into the tent, he was to meet with the leader of the defense. A Major Korakas, Snipes knew the name, he was well known in the Vast Empire military for being a hard man to fallow, but the rewards were worth it, it was said. He was a proven commander of many campaigns, his troops respected him, even if he was strict. Snipes had held a degree of respect for the man in the stories, but Snipes knew that the person he would not like.

“Korakas.”

“Major Korakas. You are First Sergeant Sniping101 of RAIDER squad. We appreciate your help.”

“We fight the battles put before us. I need details.”

“Wait, you came down with two battalions of regulars, like me, when their commanders arrive I’ll detail our precarious position out. I don’t want to repeat myself.”

“Fair enough.”

It didn’t take long, there were crashes all around the base camp, wrecks, vessels that didn’t make it down, vessels that did, vessels that barely did. But one by one the other commanders made their way in. Not just those of the two battalions of regulars, but those commanders of the forces already on the ground. In the end there were eight of them. Captain Vesuvius of the 114th and Captain Beam of the 622nd, the two commanders that had come down with Snipes; then Lieutenant Beckard, Captain T’pean, Major Elias and Sergeant Cathard. The latter three had already been there, had already fought against this enemy. When they were all there Major Korakas began.

“This is the situation,” He stared straight into Snipes storm-commando helmet, “We have two companies, a stray battalion of armor and Sergeant Cathards two squads of stormtroopers. To the east the enemy masses in these three base camps,” The holo-projection lit up, detailing the landscape vaguely, “ They have at least four regiments of experienced troopers, two battalions of armor and at least a wing of bombers at their disposal. We’ve come into contact with at least a platoon of stormtroopers.

“To the north lies a volcanically active mountain range, we’re not sure what’s in there but we do know that the enemy does not venture in there, we think there may be stragglers from what remained of our command center here located within those ranges. What little Intel we have details continued enemy losses from their northern flank and a build up of forces in that area.

“To our south lies a large acidic lake, we have to way to go over it, as you can see we have little in the way of transportation left, and from the state of the vessels that came down, there is still precious little in the way of air support of any kind for us.

“We’ve been keeping them at bay by digging in, setting up our E-Webs and waiting for help, we’re out numbered, but we know the terrain a little better and have considerably better mapping of the area. For now they’ve only been probing us with their attacks, small attacks aimed at different areas, at some point they’re realize that we’re weakest towards the north, which is where they’ve been massing their forces, despite being certain they’re doing this to counter the continued losses they’ve been facing in that area it also means that if they decide to attack from there they can have an offensive ready before we have a defensive. We’ve been keeping the south heavily defended because most of their armor is still in that area.

“Captains Vesuvius and Beam, please take up positions along our northern flank, you’ll find that we have some decent equipment up there, at least as far as this hell hole is concerned. If they buzz you with the bombers just duck down and try not to worry about it, they don’t usually waste bombs, they’ve been trying to use them as scouts, so far we’ve mostly been able to hide the size of our force from them, I’d like to keep it that way.

“First Sergeant, I have something special for you. In the north we know there must be at least a few stray squads, maybe even platoons, I want you to search them out and have them coordinate with us, I can supply you with comm equipment to give them to facilitate this. There is also the possibility that the enemy will be hunting them, looking for them as well, so keep on your toes.

“Questions?”

There was a long discussion, even longer than the detailing of the situation, but it was all details. Snipes knew now what they must do, and understood how it factored in to their victory, if they had an advantage on the flank, they could not let the enemy take that away. Snipes however did not enjoy the bickering of the regulars commanders, and eventually he left. He made it clear though that he supported Korakas.

As he left the tent his squad fell in behind him, but he wasn’t watching them, he was watching the regulars. They were all encumbered with vile looking gas masks and body suits over which they had strapped their armor. Not all of them were in the best of shape, Snipes noticed many of the suits were barely held together with duct tape. But no matter, now the Snipes knew what the RAIDERS must do.

Famus looked across the baren wasteland that was Siczaya III. Well this will be a great first mission. The trooper could smell the air and it smelled like sulfur. He looked around at the rest of the RAIDERS, who were coughing from the foul air. The regulars at the encampment, now they were a sight: their equipment was outdated and the armor was so bad that some had ducktape on them. Atleast this place doesn't have dieing mothers and abusive drunk fathers, now thats hell. Famus' muscles began to tighnten as he thought of home. Famus began his routine equipment check and looked at his vibrobayonet in admiration Hello, friend. He continued his check and was satisfied. He looked again at Siczaya III God what I would do for a drink

The RAIDERS sat there for a little while longer and then they were briefed. They were going to find some stray squads and that there would be some opposing forces looking for the stray squads as well.  joy though, it could be worse, I could still be back on Coruscant in some prison.  He looked at his squad again and they were sitting there emotions hidden behind their helmets, just like Famus. Eventually Snipes got up and left the tent as did Famus and the rest of the RAIDERS.

When the RAIDERS got outside more regulars were there and they had all put on gas masks that made them look more menacing and mangy. There was wreckage from where some transports had crashed and a few people were being carried away moaning. A trooper named Dante looked over at Famus and said," Don't get to shaken up rookie, you'll get used to.  This place maybe a whole new hell

Even Dante's state of the art helmet filters couldn't completely remove Siczaya's stench from the air. The atmosphere was choked by clouds of sulfous gases, and the fuel leaking from the wrecks scattered throughout the area didn't help. The state of the crashed ships varied from charred fragments to almost intact ships, and they were scattered throughout the desert.

For every two dropships that had landed safely, one had been shot down. The casualties would not be wasted, however. Groups of engineers swarmed over the still-smoking ships, attempting to repair those that seemed to be in fairly good condition and removing parts from those beyond repair. Half a dozen of the intact LAATi's were arranged in a rectangular formation on a make-ship landing strip to the west of the camp. It was this group that Sniping 101 directed the RAIDERS towards. Several other squads were also heading towards the transports, and Dante looked them over as he passed. He didn't like what he saw.

Some were limping along, using their rifles as make-shift crutches, while others just dragged their feet in the dirt. They looked more like refugees than soliders, and their armour was in as poor a state as they were. One soldier couldn't walk, and had to be supported by two of his squadmates. All of them had their heads down, as though in prayer. They barely even glanced up as the RAIDERS marched by.

Briefly, Dante wondered what the troopers had gone through to reduce them to that sorry state. From the postures of some of the other RAIDERS, they were wondering the same thing. One of the Privates had even stopped and was looking back. Sergeant Battlemont, too, looked back briefly, then spoke to his squad.

"What the hell are you lot waiting for? We have a job to do."

That woke the Raiders up, and they marched forwards as though they hadn't seen anything. However, Dante could tell from the First Sergeant's body language that he, too, had been troubled by what he had seen.

They passed a cluster of badly damaged transports that had crashed near the camp outskirts. Grey-armoured technicians sliced through twisted armour while medics pulled the wounded from the debris and carried them to rows of stretchers, which were then carried away. One such procession passed just to the right of the RAIDERS. One man moaned, and began to thrash wildly as his stretcher was picked up. Others remained limp, with bacta patches coating every exposed inch of skin and their sheets crusted with dried blood. This time, none of the troopers broke formation as they hurried past the gristly scene.

Dante saw one of the Privates, and had a sudden urge to say something, anything, to distract him from what they had just witnessed.

"Don't get too shaken up, rookie, you'll get used to..."

He trailed off as the man turned to look at him. Dante knew what the look in his eyes would be, the same look he had seen in the tired squad they had overtaken a minute ago. Dante shook his head slightly, and turned back to the front. No one else spoke.

After what seemed like an eternity, they arrived at the group of gunships and were waved to a larty with a grey and black colour scheme. Their pilot nodded to them, then climbed the ladder to his seat; the co-pilot was already there and waiting. The Raiders clambered on board, grabbing onto the overhead handholds and attaching their weapons to clamps waiting in the back. As the technicians pulled ladders and fuel dispensers away, the cockpit viewport sealed and flight systems came online. The LAATi's engines purred as the troop transport rose into the air and swung around until its nose was pointing due north.

As the dropship continued to make its way towards the platoons' last known location, it passed near, then over, the lines of trenches that the Vast Imperial army had dug around their base camp.

Snipes rode halfway out the side of the outdated LAAT/i, he hated the vehicle, but he had no room for those thoughts, he stared out, scanning what little could be seen of the terrain, not content to make any other man in charge of finding his landing spot. Then he saw it.

“There, man! You land there, I don’t care how, but make it happen!” He exclaimed.

“God damn pleased you finally found a spot, much further in here I’m not sure this thing would keep going!”

“Keep it to yourself.”

The crappy old craft expertly landed on the side of a particularly steep mountain, not fully touching down, the RAIDERS were forced to take a leap of faith the last ten feet to the ground. Snipes bailed first, the others followed quickly after their squad leader, who risked the hazard first. Once the RAIDERS were down the crew dropped ropes and slid the RAIDERS equipment down, quickly. They had to move quickly, the LAAT/I was vulnerable as it sat idly hovering. Snipes helped, they piled the equipment to the side for now, just trying to get it off the craft before anything bad could happen. The pilot was screaming obscenities at the group, but even in a rush things only moved so fast.

“SNIPES!” Dante screamed, “INCOMING!”

Snipes looked up in time to see the rocket trail rushing towards the hovering craft, he pulled down the two troopers next to him as the missile impacted the LAAT/I, the explosion tore the right side of the craft apart, sending it leaning down towards the RAIDERS in a giant fiery ball. Snipes turned his head and watched as it loomed towards them, he looked into the cockpit, it was ablaze, but inside he could see the pilot wrestling with the controls still, even as his armor burned into his skin, and then, it crashed. And it missed the RAIDERS by only a hairs breadth, shrapnel and wreckage poured over them, hitting several, a large panel of durasteel crashed down on Snipes, RB and Kry, shielding them from most of the other debris.

The whole thing happened in only a few seconds, but that was enough to destroy a good deal of their equipment and injure several, there was no time to count losses though, they had to discover who had pulled the trigger.
Snipes crawled out from under the piece of steel and crawled across the ground towards Dante, who had managed to take cover in a cluster of large rocks slightly uphill of them.

“Where’d it come from soldier?”

“Over there” He pointed down the canyon between mountainsides, the way they’d come in. “It seemed to be just around the corner, on this mountain.”

“Good work, go get Marka and Celota and we’ll go check it out, the others are to remain and try to salvage anything they can.”

“Yes sir.”

Dante picked up his DC-17 from where he had dropped it after the landing craft's destruction and tried to insert a power cell, but the battery refused to go in. Turning the weapon in his arms, he saw that pieces of shrapnel had lodged in the barrel and various other pieces of the now-smoking combat system.

"Sithspit!"

Dante began to try to remove the shards of durasteel, but stopped when more sparks and smoke billowed out. He knew that he didn't have the tools or expertise needed to fix the weapon in its current state, and a battleground wasn't the place to try it.

"Here, let me take a look at that."

Dante glanced up and saw the Private he'd tried to reassure on the way in. The man's helmet was under his arm, and his armour was blackenned and dented, but there was only keen interest in his face as he looked at the damaged rifle Dante was cradling.

Worldlessly, Dante handed the unusable rifle to Famus, who quickly brushed over it with a practiced hand, then removed several tools from his belt pouch. Dante left him seated there as he began to repair the deece, instead walking towards the dropship's remains.

The LAATi's cockpit had taken the brunt of the rocket's impact and explosion. The only part of the front that was still recognisable as such was a twisted laser cannon that lay in a heap of armour and broken transparisteel. A couple of fires still burned among the wreckage, given life by what remained of the dropship's fuel tanks. The gunship had been carved in two, and the mostly-intact rear was in a small crater half a dozen meters away from the front. Scattered in between was what remained of the RAIDERS' equipment.

Most of it had been slagged by the impact, including a barely-regognizable E-Web, but most of the lighter weapons had survived. Several other troopers were scavenging whatever they could find in the wreck; one of them handed Dante an A-280 and several power cells.

The standard-issue RAIDERS blaster rifle, the A-280 was ideally suited for its role. Both durable and accurate, the Sorosuub heavy rifle was in many ways an improvement on the usual E-11. Dante quickly checked for any damage, finishing by sighting through its rifle scope.

By the time he returned to Sergeant Battlemont's position, the others had already arrived. The squad leader nodded, then waved the RAIDERS forwards. They set off in a V-shaped formation, their rifles at shoulder height with their safeties off.

The fire team made their way down the mountainside, climbing over boulders and down sharp ledges. Trickles of some steaming liquid flowed over the basalt, merging into streams as they flowed down. They followed one of these down the mountain, always alert for signs of movement. They reached the bottom of the hill, and followed the now river-sized flow of acid as it wound through an ancient lava field.

The river banks grew lower, and the RAIDERS were soon forced into single-file as they followed the stream into the canyon. The sickly yellow fluid hissed as it spashed on white plastoid boots, then boiled into the air. Clouds of gas swirled in front of the RAIDERS as they marched deeper into the canyon.

The walls rose up around the group, and the shadows lengthened on the canyon floor. The canyon's gurgling muffled the footsteps of the troopers, but it also meant they couldn't detect their quarry by sound. The canyon suddenly widened, and abruptly curved to the left. Snipes made a gesture, and the fire team spread out into a flanking formation. Dante went ahead, scanning left and right for any heat signatures. He found nothing, but still felt uneasy.

There was a streak of orange, and Dante instinctively threw himself flat behind a large boulder. The rocket flew inches over his head and impacted on the rock wall behind him. Dust and stones rained down in all directions, and the other RAIDERS charged forwards.

Activating his A-280's scope, Dante fired a three round burst and was rewarded with a scream of pain as a red armoured trooper dropped his launcher and fell several meters down. Several of his comrades opened up at once and blaster bolts streaked back and forth. The firefight had begun in earnest.

Famus  was holding h is squadmates broken rifle and was attempting to fix it Dammit this is more difficult than I thought. The small fireteam began to move out and Famus was still holding the busted rifle when as a rocket  flew past Dante's head Famus fell to the ground and the rifle sitting on the boulder was destroyed and was blown to smetherines
Shit gotta get a rifle. At that moment Dante threw him a A-280 and yelled," Get your ass in gear Private." Famus looked down the scope saw a piece of armor hiding behind and a rock and shot. The foe crumpelled to the ground and laid still. Then the shots stopped.  The fire team marched forward. Famus walked past a small cave and a one of the red armoured adversaries came running out wielding a vibro- sword. As he tried to attack Famus, the young private  kicked the his opponent's knees and grabbed his arm forcing the unfortunate combatant to stab himself.
"Good Job Rookie," said Dante

"Good job, Rookie."

The words had just left his mouth when he felt something grab his ankle. Surprised, he looked down and saw the last trooper's hand clutching his leg. The vibrosword was still lodged in the armoured soldier's chest, and he was lying in a puddle of his own blood, but he still had the strength to pull Dante down. Dante quickly tried to bring his rifle to bear on the man, but he was jerked off his feet as he pulled the trigger.

The shot went wide, hitting the canyon wall and blowing an inch-deep crater in the rock. Thrown off balance by the man's action, Dante fell to the ground, landing with a clatter of plastoid on rock. His helmet slammed into a jagged rock, and a twisting crack appeared across his T-visor. He saw a red blur and tried to roll away, but was too slow.

Instantly, the Remnant stormtrooper was on top of him, pinning him down and hands grabbing at the A-280. It flew from Dante's hands and bounced off the cliff wall. Both of the men leapt for the weapon at the same time, their hands scrabbling at its grip. The enemy trooper fumbled for something with his other hand, and Dante had a sudden premonition of what was going to happen.

As the viboblade hummed to life in the clone trooper's hand, Dante grabbed the man's wrist, trying to twist the knife out of his hand. Breaking Dante's grip, he stabbed the knife into the right side of Dante's chest. Pain flared up as the blade went in, followed by anger. He curled his right hand into a fist and slammed his fist into the other trooper's chestplate. It cracked under the impact of the reinforced durasteel, and the man himself staggered a half step back.

The vibroblade fell from his grip and into the acid stream, where it hissed and died. At the same time, Dante retrieved his rifle. Bringing it up, he pulled the trigger. A dull beep came from the weapon, and an "ammunition depleted" icon flashed on Dante's HUD.

"Sithspit."

Dante rammed the rifle's butt into the hostile's chest, denting his crimson armour, but the man simply used his other hand to grab it. They wrestled for the weapon in the dirt while the acid stream bubbled and hissed inches away. The other RAIDERS watched helplessly, unable to intervene without risking hitting their fellow trooper.

Dante managed to wrestle the rifle from the stormtrooper's grasp, and slammed the barrel into the man's helmet. He staggered back a step, which was all the opening the others needed. Four blaster bolts impacted on plastoid and flesh, and the Remnant soldier fell to the ground in a smoldering heap. The stream gurgled as it began to melt the trooper's exposed flesh, sending clouds of noxious gas into the air.

Breathing heavily, Dante manipulated symbols on his HUD. An icon flashed three times, and he felt a prick in his arm. Several seconds later, the painkillers and adreneline took effect. Weariness and pain forgotten, he slammed a new clip into his A280 and nodded at Snipes. The Raiders leader gestured at the canyon path ahead.

The RAIDERS stood where they were for a moment. Then a siren started, and blaster bolts flew towards the Raiders from all directions.

"Looks like we kicked over the hornets nest." Sniping101 remarked dryly, then gestured for the Raiders to take cover. Dozens of crimson and grey suited figures charged down the canyon floor, firing as they went.

"Return fire."

OOC:
Sorry if this isn't too good: I'm low on ideas. Red troopers outrank the greys and have better armour. Greys would have only a partial helmet and worse armour than the reds. I was imagining the Remnants as wearing non-standard armour; maybe something like Zsinji's Raptors. Also, the last red trooper was a clone.

Blaster fire rained down on the fireteam as Famus ran for cover. A blaster bolt flew past Famus' head as he dove behind a boulder. He peaked around the boulder and saw a grey soldier running in the open, Famus rose up and fired five shots dropping the soldier. More and soldiers came running down the pass and were mowed down.  What are they doing they gotta be planning a diversion Famus shot five more grey armours before a group of red armours marched in rows and fired together. Famus was shot in the shoulder, "Awww dammit it to oblivion!!!" He rose up fired seven shots and was avenged. They must have alot more soldiers than thought Famus rose up and looked across the battle field and saw the fallen opponets. He than shot another two who were trying to get back up. Famus looked around at the rest of the fire team and noticed that they were all standing up.

  "Raiders move out!"

“Alright, I can’t take it anymore.” Snipes said, crouching behind a rock.

He carefully removed his helmet, held his breath for a second, breathed out, then took a deep breath and nearly choked. It was breathable, but only just. Snipes pulled a cigarette from his belt pouch and lit it, took another deep breath. That was better. Snipes eyes stung from the atmosphere, creating tears, but he knew they’d adjust. It was livable without the protective gear, but it wasn’t fun. Snipes attached his helmet to his belt and then ducked around the rock, rifle at the ready. Three shots flew from A295 and impacted a helmet barely peering around a rock.

“I can barely breath with this thing on!” Dante yelled.

“I smoke filtereds.” Snipes said, as though that were his secret, ducking around again, only to be driven back by a volley of fire from higher up the canyon. “Well, this isn’t going as well as I’d like.”

“We can try to flank them.” Famus suggested.

“RB, if you were them what would you do?” Snipes asked.

“I’d wait until RAIDERS tried to flank us, then mow them down or at least divide and conquer.”

“Exactly, so what the hell are we going to do now?”

“Fuck if I know.”

“Dante, is that archaic piece of crap of yours still working at all.”

“Rocket mode is kind of working, don’t know how well.”

“Got any rounds for that?”

“A couple survived the wreck.”

“Great, hand it over.” Snipes expected Dante to protest, but instead Famus handed him the weapon and Dante handed him a round.

Snipes took a second figure out the weapon, he’d never had the urge to use one before, but it came quickly enough and once it was loaded up. Snipes inhaled deeply through the cigarette. He could tell just by looking at the weapon it wasn’t at its best. Then he ducked around the corner and fired a single shot from the weapon, blowing the hell out of the enemies cover, but at the same time the barrel and pieces of the weapon blew out in Snipes hands, scattering across his armor and face. He yelled, as he ducked back behind cover.

“FUCKIN’ STARS!”

“You alright sir?”

“I’ll sur-fuckin’-vive.” Snipes said, inhaling deeply from his cigarette, his face stung like hell and he could tell his arms had taken some abuse. Snipes took a look at the weapon. There wasn’t a whole lot left. “Sorry Dante, I know this thing was your baby.” Snipes handed it back to the somewhat down looking Gunnery Sergeant.

“I suppose in war there are losses.” Was all he said.

Snipes looked back around at the wreckage. Marka and Celota, who had ended uphill of the other four had known what they needed to do and moved on the wreckage of the enemy. They gave Snipes the all clear signal and he sighed with relief.

“This world is going to be hard to survive, well, I guess that’s why we’re here, we’re do god damn sexy, lets get a move on.”

“Your wounds?” RB asked.

“Wounds heal, besides most of our medical equipment died in the crash.”

They nodded and moved on, collecting equipment, scavenging what they could from the dead. Snipes shouldered his A295 and flicked the stub of his cigarette away before replacing his helmet. The cleaner air should have been a relief, but it wasn’t. He missed the nicotine.

It took a few minutes for the RAIDERS to recover, but when they did they circled around Snipes. He looked both directions, trying to get his bearings, and once he did he set them off in a particular direction.

“RAIDERS, Move out.”

And they did, they marched across the horrible terrain, they had little idea of where they should be looking, and most of the their scanning equipment had been lost to the destroyed craft or the attack of the enemy. Instead they wandered mostly without direction, Snipes could only make sure they didn’t wander in circles.

*  *  *

Dante didn’t know Snipes. Well, he knew him, but only so well as those that rarely had to deal with the man. Compared to Dante’s organized loyalty to the empire and centered mind Snipes made no sense. Dante didn’t understand the man, not in any real way. He didn’t seem to be specifically loyal, and rules seemed to be play things to him instead of a decent code of ethics. His tactics were unorganized and decidedly strange. Dante hadn’t yet made up his mind on the man.

And so the wandering seemed more an extension of Snipes eccentricities as opposed to a real method. They wandered seemingly pointlessly, across barren mountains and an inhospitable terrain; most of them were wounded, including both Dante and Snipes. Dante dealt with it like a true soldier, and Snipes seemed not to notice.

Finally Snipes called a halt, the squad leader looked around, he seemed unsure of something, but what exactly was unclear. Well, unclear until a handful of white clad men appeared from behind rocks and crevices. Stormtroopers. Dante readied his weapon, but the lead of the newcomers held up a hand and removed his helmet. Snipes did the same and the two met in the middle, had a short discussion, then Dante’s squad leader signaled them to follow.

They didn’t have to go far before they were led to a crevice, this crevice turned into a door and, at Snipes insistence they entered. Inside the stench of the planet disappeared and the heat seemed to disappear. A few of the squad removed their helmets and breathed deep, Dante, however, was not so trusting.

The stench drew back, the heat began to cool, and the specs of dust began to clear. Strata Kain removed his helmet and began taking in the area they had just entered. The room was dimly lit by orange over-hanging glow rods, and shadows engulfed every other inch that hadn’t been illuminated. To Strata’s immediate left, Famus too removed his helm and spoke.

“Great,” he began half-sarcastically, “everyone have their flash-rods handy?”

-Earlier, aboard the ISD Dominion-

Strata’s dark blue skin tone stood out aboard the Dominion and its crew as he waltzed from corridor to corridor; passing droids and other fellow squad mates. He wasn’t the only Zabrak on board, but he was the only blue skinned one, which certainly drew unwanted attention to his self. Strata liked things simple, quiet; and things didn’t always go that way when you stuck out in a crowd. Halfway through what must have been the fourth or fifth corridor Strata had walked down, he was joined by his Squad Leader, Matthias Battlemont, and better known as Snipes.

“Private Kain,” Snipes began, “nice to see such fresh meat.”

“Sir,” Kain said in return, with a slight hint of mild resentment. “I assure you, I may be fresh meat as you so put it, but you’ll find I’m most capable.” Kain’s accent had a slight touch of Coruscant in it.

Snipes nodded as they began to walk down the corridor, “Well, we will see now won’t we?”

“You don’t sound convinced,” Kain claimed.

“I lost count a long time ago about how many new recruits have assured me as much,” Snipes admitted.

“When I was a mere child, I was sent on my rite of passage to the harsh planet of Hoth,” Kain spat out. “The air was frigid; it cut through your flesh like a thousand knives. I was with three other fellow clan members, and food began to run low. I knew that we would eventually turn on each other one by one, to eat each other’s flesh and use our skin to keep warm. So I took the first move. I murdered three Zabrak within minutes, ate their flesh, and earned my rite of passage once I completed my task. Sir, I highly doubt that any other recruit has ever done as much.”

Snipes bore a look of slight bewilderment, “That’s some tale.”

“I am quite kaz, sir,” Kain returned.

“Sorry?”

“Kaz; meaning clever in my home language.”

Snipes nodded, “I see. Well, if your story is true then I’m sure you are more than capable to last in the corps.”

Kain grunted in annoyance and humor, “The story is true, I kept their hearts to prove it.”

Snipes nodded with a half uncomfortable, half interested look upon his face, “Well, I’ll just take your word for it.”

The two shared a brief bow and went about their ways. Strata quickened his pace as he turned a final corner, down a final matte grey corridor, into his small personal quarters. The eight by ten room was painted an even dimmer grey, with rust around the edges of each of the four walls. Strata’s bunk was covered with two duffel bags, each of which holding his personal belongings… each belonging either being a piece of armor or weaponry. He reached his hand in one of the bags and withdrew pieces of equipment for the upcoming mission.

“I am Sniping101 of the Vast Empire, and this is RAIDER squad.” Snipes said with a florish, his helmet under his left arm.

“I am Captain Lambert, Platoon Commander of Fire and Ice Platoon.”

Snipes looked him over for a moment, he hadn’t removed his armor, he was wearing stormtrooper armor, Snipes hadn’t expected that. The armor was painted a dull brown-ish red, no doubt to blend into the surroundings better, it was chipped and marred from what Snipes assumed was constant combat.

“We’re here to help you out, we were sent by Major Korakas to locate and reestablish communication with the lost squads, also to asses your situation and help if we could.”

“Heh, Major Korakas huh? This oughta be interesting. We can discuss the particulars later, for now your wounds should be seen to, we managed to take a few of the noncombatants with us when we came here, there should be a doctor or two.”

“I would appreciate it if you could see to my men, however I would like to speak with you sooner rather than later.”

“Alright, Corporal!” Lambert screamed behind him, a regular came running. “Take these men to the medical bay, have the docs take a look at ‘em and get them somethin’ to eat.”

“Yes sir!”

“As for you, Sniping101,”

“Please, Snipes will do,”

“Alright Snipes, follow me.”

Snipes turned around and nodded to his men, some of them were already pretty badly beaten up, Snipes wasn’t really in great condition, but most of the bleeding had stopped. He’d always been a quick healer.

Snipes followed Lambert down a few halls, they were all gray, and old looking, post of the exposed piping was rusted and dust covered the floor. However there was a degree of life to the place, people coming and going, armored and unarmored. Snipes wouldn’t be surprised if there really did turn out to be a more than a platoon taking refuge in the bunker. It seemed to be a fairly large complex, but old. Some parts they went through had glow rods hanging from the ceiling instead of lighting, others were well lit, and every possible shade in between.  Some parts had water covering the ground, other parts were extremely hot, to the point of certain discomfort.

“Don’t worry.” Lambert assured during one of the hotter corridors, “Outside these walls are made of some special material meant to withstand the heat of the magma, and if it does somehow get in here the doors at both ends of the corridor close, why do you think there’s so many of them? You know we’re right in the middle of a magma flow right now. Too bad the damn AC barely works in this place.”

Snipes snorted a half laugh and continued on behind the man. He didn’t have to follow him much further before they reached a sealed door. He input a code and the door slid open. Inside looked like hell to Snipes. It was supposed to be an armory, but for the most part archaic DC-15’s lined the walls, with boxes and boxes of ammunition. There were a couple crates of E-11’s and some standard blasterpacks, a handful of slugthrowers and older rocket launchers and a couple piles of what must have been pilfered or broken weapons. For heavy weapons there were three E-Webs, a couple weapons that looked like spare tank parts and one very confused looking washing machine.

“Well. . .there’s a lot.”

“Of crap.” Lambert finished for him. “Most of it works though, and one of the engineers that came with us found a way to shorten the DC’s without much penalty to the punch. It’s what I’m carrying.”  Lambert handed the weapon to Snipes so that he could look over it.

It was only a little longer than an E-11, seemed a bit heavier, and certainly looked like an abomination, but Snipes had little doubt it was effective. Snipes nodded approvingly and handed it back.

“You and your squad are welcome to whatever we have. We were able to make away with quite a bit of supplies when we fled the base and some of us have been able to steal some supplies from the traitors.”

“Traitors?”

“Hmph, So Korakas didn’t mention that? Very interesting, but on that subject, I’m sorry, but I have no intention of siding with Korakas, he’s just trying to protect his mines and has put many of my brethren into harms way in doing so.”

“His mines? I was under the impression he was assembled between the OpFor and one of the terraforming plants.”

“Heh, yeah, well, take a look under that plant someday, you’ll know what I mean. Anyway, no point worrying about this right now, go ahead and get fed and have the docs take a look at you. Your squad can rest here until day, and if you wish to use us as a base of operations while looking for the other squads feel free. I am still a loyal soldier of the Vast Empire, but what Korakas is doing is madness.”

Famus looked around at the durasteel and gray walls. He wiped the beads of sweat that were dripping down his face.  "Well looks like this place could use an air conditioning." The coporal who was leading the group turned and gave Famus a sad and stern look. "The medical bay and cafeteria are on the right and the barracks are on the left." With that he was gone. Famus looked at his squadmates and shrugged.

The RAIDERS kept walking and all but Famus went to the mess hall. He walked into the med bay and was blided by bright lights. "Hello," said a blonde female doctor, " You must be one of the guests. Follow me and we will give you some medical attention you need."

Famus followed the doctor to a bench and removed his shoulder plating revealing the gash on the left shoulder. Famus looked at the dried blood on the armour and gritted his teeth. "Wow, thats gonna leave a nice scar," said the blonde doctor. She grabbed a syringe and fill it with a clear vacine and said," This should help the pain and should keep the wound from getting infected. Alright now for the stiches."

20 minutes and eight stitches later Famus walked out of the medical bay feeling much better. He walked over to the mess hall
were he grabbed what he thought were bread and some sort of meat and sat down next to Celota and said, " Hey, what do you think of this place." Celota just shrugged and kept on eating.
Well he is a social type

Eting and thinking over the mission so far. When he was done he got up and said," Catch ya later." He walked out across the hall to the barracks. Famus looked inside and found an open were he laid down and fell asleep.

"Hey come on sweety," Laura smiled at Famus. The two young lovebirds were walking through Coruscant. They came to the protest and found New Republic soldiers marching towards the hundred or so protesters. Laura looked into Famus' eyes and said," They can't do this, HEY cut it out you WAR MONGERS!!!" Just then blaster fire broke out in the plaza. Famus heard a shriek and looked to his left Laura was on the ground motionless with a hole through her chest.
Famus woke up in a cold sweat and began to sob.

Private Tort Relvin got through the fighting without a scratch, mostly due to crouching behind a dense looking rock until he heard the explosion of the DC-17 and the squad leaders order to move out.

Clutching his lucky viroblade at his side a standard DH-17 blaster pistol holstered on his belt he followed the rest of the RAIDERS. Tort had his rifle clutched nervously to his chest with his free arm. The rifle hadn't survived the crash as well as some others, the scope was cracked and the barrel looked ever so slightly bent he'd picked his up last though and was now suffering the consequences.

He remembered when the squad marched from the camp, the wounded stormtroopers crawling through the dirt too beaten to be any help but too stubborn to give up. he remembered as he passed close by a trooper, a private just as he was perhaps also just on his first mission, his helmet was shattered he looked like he could barely breathe but it was the look in his eyes most of all that shocked Tort. The private reached out and weakly touched the armor encasing Torts leg, the fist smear of blood stained the shining white of his armor. He nearly threw up.

Back on the Dominion Tort had sat on his own in the barracks fully geared up his helmet carefully worn making sure his Lekku where tucked inside but even so he could feel the pressure on them. It was a dull ache in his mind. The other Troopers ignored him and he ignored them shaking his head when asked if something was wrong. As far as they new he was just a Human like them, he didn't know how they'd treat a Twi'Lek and so he sat in the corner fully geared up in his armor and not speaking so his accent didn't give him away.

They where in a cave now, Tort knew that they'd found... Some other Stormtroopers? He hadn't been focused the last few minutes the pressure on his Lekku had increased the dull throb had become an overwhelming pain. He took quick shallow breaths he had to take his helmet off the pain was killing him. But then what if one of the others saw him? Might they kill him anyway?

Tort shook his head, a movement which caused a lot of agony for him and he stumbled, he was alone in a corridor but where? Why did he feel so light? I am back home? Is this Ryloth? No it isn't his inner voice leered cruelly and your never going back. With that last thought, Tortura'lvin known to some as Tort Relvin, passed out.

“You actually thought that I’d care you were a Twi’lek.” Snipes said with a smile, “You foolish child.”  There was a degree of bemusement to the squad leaders demeanor that managed to lighten the souls around him, “You’re a stormtrooper now, kid, that’s all that matters. This is war and we are brothers.”

Snipes watched Tort’s confused face as he stared up from his bunk. No doubt the young trooper wasn’t entirely sure what was going on, waking up in strange places tended to have that effect on people. The kid made Snipes chuckle in a sense. He wasn’t much of a warrior, or for that matter anything else. A coward and braggart, Snipes usually hated the combination, but something about the kids arrogance appealed to the twisted Snipes sense of the absurd.

“Y-yes sir.”

“My name be Snipes. Don’t expect to be called much else. Anyway, get yerself ready kid, we’re movin’ out pretty soon.” Snipes said, lighting a cigarette. “And try to fire a atleast a couple shots this time, it’ll make you look better.
In about ten minutes we’re meeting at the entrance and goin’ back outside.”

* * *

Snipes looked around at his troopers, they hadn’t gotten much time to rest, in such a place it was easy to forget the urgency of war outside. Snipes didn’t allow himself to. His face was partially covered in bandages and under his storm-commando armor his arms were as well. The others were wearing their stormtrooper armor, Lambert had suggested they paint it a different color to blend in better, Snipes agreed and now they were a red striped with brown, dark, musky colors, designed to blend in with the area.

“We’re going back into the fray, right now we’re helping our comrades here raid a supply convoy for the enemy army. Apparently some of their drop ships missed their landing zone and now they have to drive the goods to the front. We’re going to strike from the mountains, capture the goods, then return. Our friends here have agreed to give us first pick of the loot, and since on our own we’re a bit short on supplies I don’t see why not. “

The squad nodded, they were tired, the mission had started poorly and now they were stuck banged up and beaten, low on supplies and moral already seemed to be slipping. This would not do.

Famus sighed, the rest had been short and his shoulder was starting to hurt again. The young private looked over at the twilek who just past out a few minutes before. He was older than Famus but was smaller. The young trooper looked over at Snipes who was watching the others get up and shouted, "So, were going through the mountains. Well is there a particular path?" Snipes looked at the young and cocky private and said," Yes, but the path is a very rugged one. Rocks and all that junk. " Famus wasn't particularly happy about rugged mountain passes and no one else seemed very happy about. The squad exited the barracks and was lead into a briefing room.

"Welcome RAIDERS, please sit down," said Lambert. Snipes replied," We'll stand. Now please continue, Captain Lambert."

"Okay, now the enemy will be dropping the off the supplies and you will be in the mountains firing down on them while they run for their life when we flank them. Any questions?" Famus raised his and Lambert nodded, " What is the troop number of are enemy?" "Ah.. yes, there will be about a hundred of them there and we will attack with about seventy-five but we will have the advantage with you all in the mountains."

The RAIDERS set out across the rocky pass with no one saying a word. Famus looked across the skies and was disturbed by the red and orange skies that reminded Famus of hate and anger. Thoughts of Laura came to him but he put it out of his head. Thats the last thing I need to think about here in this modern hellhole.

Snipes was leading the group with Dante close behind with the zabrak and twilek behind leaving Famus covering the rear. There had been no enemy dumb enough to try and sneak up behind the ferocious squad who were severely pissed by lack of sleep. Lambert came over the com-link and said, "RAIDERS you are coming up at the drop-off point. When you get there make sure you don't fire until the transport has landed and after you have them looking at the mountain pass we hit them hard and fast. No prisoners. Lambert out!"

"Well, boys you heard him, move out!

The RAIDERS slowly made their way up the mountain side, their repainted armour camouflaging them from any unwanted eyes. Whenever possible, they crawled with their rifles held out ahead of them; when the terrain made that impractical they moved with their back parallel to the ground. Lambert was fairly sure that the hostiles wouldn't be expecting the attack, but Sergeant Battlemont wasn't taking any chances.

Truth be told, Dante had developed a pronounced dislike for the renegade Captain. A few words with his men had told Dante all he needed to know: they were traitors. This knowledge made his cooperation with the group, not to mention his taking orders from their Captain, stick in his throat. It wasn't the first time he'd wondered what in the Nine Corellian Hells Sniping 101 was thinking, but it was the first order he'd seriously thought about disobeying. For now, he'd simply follow his directions and hope for the best.

The mountain slope abruptly flattened out, inches above Sniping 101's head. The First Sergeant gestured to Dante, who then passed him a flexible cable. The Squad Leader slowly fed the cable out onto the plateau, activating the holocam as he did so. The feed showed something unexpected: a trio of soldiers sitting with their backs against a large rock, their weapons lying in a heap at their side. This was a new wrinkle, and a potentially disastrous one at that. If the group wasn't taken out before they could report in, the whole ambush could fall apart.

Several troopers below, one of the new recruits started to move from side to side, shaking all of the troopers below him from side to side. Dante leaned to one side and looked directly down, and the shaking stopped.

Sergeant Battlemont muttered something under his breath, then spoke.

"Sniper."

A Verpine shatter rifle was passed up from RAIDER to RAIDER until it reached the squad leader. Sniping 101 checked it to make sure it was fully loaded, then deactivated the safety. He then clambered over the cliff face and behind a convenient boulder. Poking the rifle's barrel around the rock, the First Sergeant squeezed the rifle’s curved trigger three times. Three bodies fell with their helmet faceplates and large parts of their heads blown away, and a disembodied helmet rolled through the dust as its owner twitched in his death throes. Sniping 101 stood up, scanning the area, then nodded to himself.

“All clear.”

Dante pulled himself up by his arms, dropping his weapon as soon as he could, then scrambling up. Moving aside so as to not block the others, he retrieved his PLX-1 and reslung it. One by one, the RAIDERS climbed up, forming a loose semicircle near the cliff edge. Far below, the first of the hostile transports rumbled into the area directly below the mountain. Looking around, Dante hoped the patterns painted onto their plastoid armour would fool the eyes of the cargo ship pilots. A series of curses from Sniping 101 drew his attention back to the convoy below. Dante removed a battered pair of electrobinoculars, provided courtesy of Lambert, from his belt and zoomed in on the group. There were four boxy cargo craft, each topped by a light laser cannon. Although the RAIDERS were far out of the short-range weapons maximum firing distance, and were ,in any event, well hidden, the same did not hold for Lambert’s force. The turrets would have to be neutralized before they made their move.

The real problems were hovering serenely on either side of the circle of transports. Red-brown AAT tanks, dating back to the Clone Wars but still very much a threat, and a single AT-ST were on either side of the group. The laser cannons alone would be enough to end the ambush, and the AT-ST would be a major problem. The only consolation was that there seemed to be fewer infantry than expected, eighty instead of the hundred Lambert had promised. It was clear the Captain’s intel was badly mistaken.

Still, Dante said none of this, instead loading a round into his PLX-1’s firing chamber. Looking through the sight, noting the target distance and other information scrolling across the sight’s display as he moved the weapon, he dropped to one knee as he prepared to fire.

“Wait for Lambert to give the signal…”

A flare shot into the air, going unnoticed by the Remnant convoy against the hellish red-orange sky.

“Now.”

Dante fired a rocket, boots digging into the pebble-filled dirt as the force of the projectile pushed him back. At the same time, the other RAIDERS had shouldered and fired their rifles. Shatter gun rounds and sniper fire hissed through the air, and half a dozen of the red and grey armoured troopers fell midstep. A moment later, Dante’s rocket impacted on the AT-ST, which had conveniently turned its head directly towards the incoming round.

The explosion blew away the light walker’s front and filled its drivers with shrapnel. The scout vehicle took a half step forwards, wobbled mid-step, then fell gracelessly to the ground with flames pouring from every opening. More rockets streaked towards the other vehicles, and clouds of smoke began to drift up as explosions echoed up the mountainside. Down below, the first of Lamberts squads charged towards the hostile infantry, and blaster fire flew to and fro.

By this time, Dante had reloaded and was looking for a second target. He soon found one in an AAT tank that had obligingly turned away from the squad's mountain in order to provide cover fire for its allies.

"Knock knock..."

Snipes fired round after round through the sniper rifle. Wasn’t normally his sort of weapon, but hey, when the situation called he could handle just about anything after being in the army this amount of time.

“Dante!” Snipes yelled, “Pull down the first in the train!”

“Yes sir!”

A few seconds later Snipes was blessed with the sight of a rocket flying towards the first vehicle in the convoy, the rocket impacted perfectly and the explosion was magnificent, Snipes enjoyed that bit greatly. Now they were forced to stop, they’d have to move around it and that would slow them down, a great benefit to the attacking forces.

“Famus, get down hill twenty meters, set up an EWeb in that outcropping.” Snipes didn’t have time to watch the newer member, instead he was busy sighting in an officer.

“Got it.”

It didn’t take long before Famus and Kry scampered downhill and had the Eweb set up, the force of it’s fire kept the enemy troops cowering behind the vehicles, further bogging them down. Lamberts force was doing a botch job of attacking the convoy, moving in large groups and with little discipline. Snipes bit his lip, he knew once you let them disobey one order this is what happened. Snipes scanned the scene with his scope, checking on everything. Much to his dislike he was met with a sight he didn’t fully approve of.

Staring him almost straight in the face was the cannon of the other AT-ST. Ah, fuck. Before he could say anything a rocket fired from the side of it’s ‘head’ and he had just enough time to duck behind the cliff.

The rocket impacted below him though, however in his helmet he could hear screams of two men. “SNIPES! Ewebs out, Kry isn’t breathing, we need help!” It was Famus, rocket must have been meant for the Eweb that had been making a pain of itself.

“Tortus, RB, get down there, see what you can do, Dante, take out that second AT-ST.”

Snipes was having a hell of a time keeping the battle together now. He stuck his eye back into the scope and took a look, Lamberts force was being driven back, but Snipes knew that wouldn’t last a whole lot longer unless the enemy did something about RAIDERS. Snipes was a little disappointed that the battle was being carried on their shoulders.

I fuckin’ hate this planet.

Tort slid down the slope firing off random bursts from his rifle before finding the catch and switching to single fire mode. He was now wearing an improvised gas mask one of Lambert’s engineers had cooked up for him. It was attached to his face by sandy coloured bandages which also covered his now exposed lekku to stop the colour giving away his position.

Despite the poor visibility given by Tort’s gas mask he saw one or two of the Silhouettes approaching their position fall giving him the moral boost needed to make his way to where Famus was struggling with the E-web taking nervous glances at Kry who was lying in the dirt unmoving.

‘You two!’ Famus screamed in desperation. ‘Help me set up this E-web fast; it should be able to fire at half strength at least…’ Famus sounded unsure but RB rushed in to help leaving Tort to administer first-aid to the fallen trooper.

Ducking low to avoid the blaster fire Tort looked at Kry and tried to remember his training. He took a needle filled with bacta from a small medkit on the fallen troopers belt and removing his helmet injected the liquid into what he hoped was the correct vein.

Without waiting for any response Tortus put the trooper’s helmet back onto his head deciding that even if the bacta helped the atmosphere on the desolate planet may well kill him anyway. Looking up Tort saw that Famus was still struggling with the E-Web and the figures where getting ever closer. Picking up his rifle Tort swallowed nervously and leapt into the fray.

Tort gained the advantage of surprise, the enemy hadn’t seen him while he was with Kry and now he was running towards them like a mad man firing his rifle into their ranks killing two of them and injuring another before unsheathing his Vibroblade and cutting down a third.

The troopers now over this initial shock pointed their own rifles at Tort preparing to fire. The leader of the squad sneered and shot Tort’s right arm with his blaster pistol making him drop the Vibroblade in a sudden gasp of pain. Moving his aim up to the stunned Twi’lek’s face he laughed.

The cocky laugh turned into a scram of despair as his torso was pierced by a single shot from Sniping101’s rifle and before the rest of the squad could retaliate they where ripped to shreds by the now up and running E-Web.

Taking one glance at the hill where Snipes was positioned and another at Famus and the E-Web. Tort fell to his knees and looked with despair at the corpses that lay around him. The 5 or so ripped apart by the E-Web… The arrogant leader lying face contorted into a mask of horror, and finally the three that he’d killed. Two with blaster one with Vibroblade. He’d never killed before. He wasn’t ready for this.

Tort ripped off the gas mask and the bandages around it and threw up into the pile of gore, the smell of fresh corpses reaching his nostrils for the first time. The E-Web fired off again as Tort faced the ground coughing heavily now he was exposed to the air around him when suddenly everything was silent. Tort looked up.

What lay before the RAIDERS now was indescribable. It was huge.

The first sign Dante had that something was wrong was when the sounds of blaster and slugthrower fire suddenly quieted, then died out. Clouds of dust flew in all directions, and the sky suddenly darkened.

"What is that?"

"Troop transport. Clone Wars era." Sniping 101 had time to reply before a deafening shriek drowned out all other noise. Nearby, Rogueboy felt Kry’s unarmored wrist, then slowly shook his head.

The whispered question seemed much less absurd to Dante than it normally would have, as the massive vessel was so scorched and damaged that the shape alone gave its nature away. It had obviously taken quite a beating in the battle around the planet; parts of its superstructure had been completely melted away and the triangular shape had been distorted by the sheer amount of damage.

The crippled warship left a line of black smoke trailing in its wake as it shrieked overhead, nose pointed downwards and maneuvering thrusters flaring. Although its primary engines, not to mention most of the area behind the bridge, were smoking ruins, the vessel’s crew were still trying to avoid a crash landing. There were bursts of light from the ship's underside, bursts which quickly faded into dozens, then hundreds of ovaloid escape pods. The pods quickly fell from sight, and the critically damaged cruiser hurled less than a hundred meters above the RAIDERS. It shrieked above the ash plains, scattering debris and escape pods behind it, and suddenly disappeared from sight. A moment later, the entire mountain shook as the ship impacted the ground, and a massive dust cloud rose hundreds of miles to the south.

The troopers were forced to cling to boulders or dig their heels into the yielding ash slope as displaced air momentarily sent gale force winds tearing at the squad. There was a loud pop as both of Dante's helmet ‘s sound receptors automatically shut down, but Dante could still feel the sudden gale. Below the mountain, the battle was raging again, the incident forgotten. There was a sudden air of desperation to the enemy’s fighting: any possibility of reinforcements or air support had just been swept away by the ship’s appearance: any equipment or personnel aboard were much higher priority than a comparatively small group of transports.

Between the RAIDERS and Lambert’s own fire teams, both AT-ST’s and most of the AATs had been converted to smoking piles of scrap, but the surviving tanks had realized where their attackers were hiding. As Dante watched, one of the grey and blue coloured repulsor tanks swiveled 45 degrees and fired its main cannon. A camouflaged group of troopers and their turret were consumed by the ensuring fireball. Overall, though, the tide seemed to be turning in the favor of the Vast Empire. As Dante watched, a trio of rockets streaked from the hills and smashed into the pair of transports closest to the tank. They crumpled like a wad of flimsy, and the shrapnel tore through the dozen or so troopers who had been staging a last stand around the vehicles. Dante saw all this in his HUD, but his attention was on the sole remaining tank.

“Come on, you bastard…just a little bit more…”

It turned towards a squad charging down one of the hills, and Dante had the opening he needed. The homing rocket flew straight and true, hitting the hovertank just behind its troop hatch. The high explosive blew through the vehicle’s light rear plating and penetrated the bodies of its driver and gunners. The massive tank fell with a massive thunk, shaking slightly as its systems overloaded. A moment later, there was a bright flash of light as the AAT blew like an oversized frag grenade.

From there, the Remnant had obviously lost the battle. To their credit, they never tried to surrender, even as the Vast Imperial Squad herded them into a circle and sniper teams picked them off. They were simply mowed down by automatic blaster fire. It was over in minutes.

Looking down at the scene, Dante noticed the dozens of bodies from both sides. Out of the corner of his eye, he could see Kry lying with his back to a boulder, temporarily forgotten while the battle raged but suddenly remembered. Kneeling besides the fallen trooper, Snipes fumbled for something attached to the man’s neck and came away with an all-too familiar metal rectangle.

Lambert chose that moment to open a channel.

“RAIDERS squad, this is Captain Lamberr. Respond.”

“We hear you, Captain.”

“An enemy ship came down during the ambush, the Phlegethon . We have reports of pods coming down all across the plain. We’ll have to deal with any survivors  in our immediate vicinity.”

What he didn’t say was as important to Dante as what he did.

Why only in your vicinity? Is it because you’re afraid of the Major’s men? If so, why are we taking orders from you?

“Understood, Captain. RAIDERS out.”

OOC:
Yes it sucks, but access is becoming tricky right now. Sorry.

Famus looked across the battlefield were there foes lied dead. Famus saw a motionless stormtrooper against the boulder and gulped. Kry, the other private who had been fighting next to Famus only minutes ago was now dead and alone. The young trooper had been in denial until then, thinking that he wouldn't be killed in action. The realization was stunning. He looked among his squad mates Snipes said,"Well, lets get moving towards these pods. A map of has been uploaded to your HUD." The squad set off across the rugged landscape that was Siczazya III. The pass the Raiders walked across was not nearly as bad as the one before. Famus looked across the canyon basin from the top of a hill and said,"Sir, there is smoke coming from over in that direction," Famus said pointing towards the canyon bend. Snipes looked over in the direction and replied," I see that Private. We will move over in that direction by maneuvering towards that bend and we will move along the canyon wall and work are way over to the pod."

The Raiders were moving down the quickly with there blaster rifles in their hand's. The group was at the bottom of the canyon and started along the canyon wall which was an odd red color. They turned the corner and saw a pod with smoke bellowing out of it.

Famus looked down his scope and looking for any movement. All of a sudden a grenade flew through the air making a clank sound as it hit the dusty ground. The Raiders fanned out and with a boom Famus was knocked back against the canyon wall. He rolled and got back on feet just in time to dodge a blaster bolt the flew past his head. Whew that was lucky. He shot three times toward the trooper who had almost ended his life. The remnant trooper jumped behind the pod. While two others shot at the squad before being mowed down like unarmed protesters. The  Raiders moved in on the lone adversary. A blaster shot went off and Famus looked around and was puzzled. No one in his squad was hurt. The squad moved around and saw the dead Remnant trooper laying  dead with a blaster bolt through his head. There enemy had taken his own life. This angered Famus. A man could take his life while his squad mates were being shot down fighting for a cause they believe in.

The squad looked in the pod and found nothing but some small amounts of E-11 ammo. The Raiders squad leader said,"Alright one pod to go three more to go. From now on we gotta be more fuckin careful. You saw what happened to Kry, well I will not lose any more soldiers."

Snipes grunted, three more pods betwixt them and the bunker. Lambert had only meant the pods on their way home. Might as well search them out on the way instead of having a nasty surprise come up from behind. Snipes wasn’t overly thrilled with it, but he knew why it needed to be done.

Still they went smoothly, little lasting damage to the RAIDERs, a few close calls, but little of significance,  wouldn’t of really been worth putting in his next report, but he knew he would because a bolt had caught a exposed piece of body suit where he’d already been bandaged up on his right arm. About this he was quite pissy. Still it had gone fairly smoothly.

Now Snipes and Lamberts combined forces were attempting the long road back to their base. The crashed acclamator has awoke the volcanoes once again and they were forced to take other, harder routes to where they were going. It wasn’t easy, the goeing was  difficult, and at some points the mountain passes would narrow to the point where only one at a time could cross, hugging the solid mountains for dear life and hoping another eruption did not knock them from their precarious position. Snipes was truly amazed when the entire group made it back to the pass that led to Lambert's bunker.

Snipes trudged at the front, unhappy with all that had befallen the squad, they had been unable to salvage much of anything from the convoy, the scavenging of blaster packs had left RAIDERS back where they had started, most enemy weapons had been destroyed, and those that weren’t were inferior to the RAIDERS A280s. Their Eweb was broken, barely working, but in this kind of war you took what you could get. Kry’s body had been left behind, as was the way of war. Snipes knew it, but some of the younger ones didn’t seem to have realized as well as the seasoned leader did.

They came finally to where the Fire and Ice Platoons entrance had been, but no longer was it lingering there, it was covered by a massive lava flow, no way to get around in, the mountain was boiling forth its awful brew at an alarming rate and throwing it everywhere.

“Well what now captain?” Snipes asked.

“Well, those inside should be good, enough food for two months if they ration it, there’s only two weeks of this weather left, the bunker automatically should of shut itself down once the lava started covering the door, so those inside will be fine.”

“I meant about us.”

“I don’t know, your call First Sergeant.”

“Sorry, Captain, but we’re going to Korakas, you can either tag along or be left here with the magma.”

Lambert was silent for a moment, then spoke, “We’ll come with you, and lend what strength we can to out comrades, I do not believe it is right to put that man on a pedestal, but if it means saving our lives and theirs then I will do it.”

Snipes nodded, not one for sentimentality, he let the speech go and nodded.

“Dante, I need a blasting charge.”

“You have a plan, Sniping101?” Lambert asked.

“He always does.” One of Snipes trooper answered.

Snipes smiled behind his helmet and grabbed the charge from Dante. He placed it next to them on the cliff face, above he could see an overhang, he was going to bring it down. It only took him a few seconds to plant it, and only a few more for the entire squad and burdensome platoon to find somewhere safe. Snipes grinned widely as he hit the detonator. A great explosion sounded, accompanied by the sounds of rocks and gravel falling.

“Quick, we don’t have long to get across.”

Otto stood in the open doorway of one of three LAATi. The trio of troop transports was on a search and rescue mission to find a number of VE squads that had lost comm. contact during the campaign. So far they'd only found a half dozen survivors, and they were all Regulars, no Stormtroopers. This worried him because he knew that members of his old squad were out here somwhere, dead or more likely, dying.

He did not like using his Force powers outside of missions for th Order, but he knew that they were necessary here. So he kept his mind attuned to any life forces in the area.

*************************************************

An hour before, Otto's Clawcraft had exited hyperspace, just as an enemy Star Destroyer began crumbling in space. His sensors picked up a few escape pods headed toward the surface, but figured they'd be picked off by those on the surface. He quickly contacted the Dominion and asked where he could find the Raiders. They gave him the coordinates on the planet for the base camp of one Major Korakas.

He thanked the comm. officer and turned his fighter toward the planet. Along the way he only encountered two enemy fighters, and made quick work of them. It seemed that either everyone was too busy with the actual battle to worry about him, or too afraid of what the pilot of a Clawcraft was cabable of.

After landing, he'd opted to leave his flight suit on due to the gases in the atmosphere. Soon after introducing himself to Major Korakas, and explaining his situation, he boarded one of the three LAATi's to try and find the Raiders, and any other wayward squads.

*************************************************

As they crossed over another molten river, Otto's Force senses flared. He turned toward his fellow troopers
"Get dow...." And then the aft section of the ship exploded, launching him out the open door.

As he fell, he saw the fireball that was the LAATi that he'd just been standing in plumet toward the lava river. The other two ships followed suit. He spun in mid-air to face the ground. He was heading toward the drop off of ground to lava. He stuck out his hands and used the Force to land safely. When he landed, he turned to see two of the burning LAATi's crash into the surface, exploding on impact. The third crashed into the lava, and was quickly engulfed in flames. He tried to reach out with the Force to aid those on board, but it was no use, there was no one alive.

He shook his head and looked up into the sky to try and find any missle trails. Only 1 smoke trail was visible, but that was all he needed. They'd come from a section of small mountains a few miles to his left, East. Behind him he heard a distant explotion, a single explotion, no blaster fire, just the explotion.

North, it's gotta be something

He turned and followed the lava river North. About ten minutes later he reached a rock bace on the edge of the lava flow. It had a giant scortched and jagged hole near the bottom, and rubble was everywhere. Someone had just blown down the cliff edge. He had an idea of who. He looked over the river, and about a half mile away he saw a group of Stormtroopers headed West.

With the aid of the Force, he jumped over the lava river and jogged toward his likely comrades. Within minutes he had caught up to the band of Stormtroopers. One of the Stormtroopers heard him coming and turned, blaster at the ready.

"Freeze!" he shouted. This caused the rest of the company to turn in his direction with their own blasters drawn. Otto skidded to a halt and raised his hands above his head. If this was the enemy, he'd have to deal with being their prisoner. Since he was pretty sure that they weren't, judging by the shape of the insignia on the Stormtroopers' uniforms, he knew he'd be safe.

"Whoa," he said, hands still in the air, "I'm one of you guys. I just want to speak with your CO."

Two Stormtroopers stepped forward, obviously this was two different squads banding together. The Stormtrooper on the left put a hand up to silence the other before he could speak.

"I know that voice," said a familiar electronic Stormtrooper voice, "Name yourself.

Otto smiled inside his helment and began to lower his arms, "Sergeant Major Otto Vox, at your service Snipes."

"Otto?" Snipes replied, "I though you were retired?"

"Advisor, but same thing I guess. I'm back now." he paused a moment, "Can I not have those blasters pointed at me anymore?"

"Oh yeah," Snipes motioned to the other troopers and they lowered their weapons. "Otto here was SL of Raiders back when I was still just a trooper. Good soldier, good leader."

Snipes turned back to him, "So how'd you get here?"

Otto explained, and also told them how he'd been reinstated to active duty as a member of Raiders, but the orders came through after they'd lost comm. signal with the squad. So he'd opted to come down and find them.

"Well," Snipes said after Otto was finished telling his story, "It's good to have you back. Right now we're trying to get back to Base Camp. So let's get moving"

The appearance of Otto put a bounce in Snipes step, despite the generally beaten and mangled appearance of the group most of them were still in decent condition, a few of the Fire and Ice platoon had been wounded seriously, but none of the RAIDERS.

Now they were following the mountain, west towards the Vast Empire line, using the mountains to disguise their presence. It made the going slower, more tedious, but far safer. As such their journey back took the better part of the day, frequently being delayed and slowed by the many breaks they were forced to take due to the injured or those not up to Snipes standards of fitness.

They took a long break at what passed for night in this place, the volcanoes kept the sky lit against the dark sky. Snipes looked upward, and watched the clouds, not much to see, the occasion piece of burning wreckage or meteors. He knew it would be atleast another several hours after they awoke to the base. As it was Snipes was taking watch with four of Lamberts men.  Snipes watched them, they were fidgety, bored and inattentive. Snipes spat. His helmet was buckled to his belt, a cigarette hung from his mouth, maybe he couldn’t bitch too much.

“Snipes.” Otto’s voice took Snipes out of his concentration.

“Aye?”

“Guard shift.”

“Aiight, wake up Dante, I want another RAIDER on watch.”

“Think they’re going to try something?”

“Naw, they’re not the type, but I don’t trust them to watch me sleep.”

“Ah”

Snipes nodded to his old friend, he would liked to hang around and talk to his old friend, but he needed sleep, he could feel the exhaustion creeping up on him. Snipes found himself a glorious patch of rocky soil beneath the shadow of a rock near the rest of RAIDERS and leaned against it, letting his rifle rest against his shoulder as sleep slowly took him.

His dreams were mixed and unorganized, there was much chaos to it, and when he was awoken by the last changing of the guards he felt only slightly better than when he had at first surrendered to sleep. The sun was coming up, but it was hard to tell, the dark sky blotted the sun away, and then volcanoes were still making noise. Snipes gritted his teeth and stuck his morning cigarette in his mouth and inhaled deeply. The atmosphere of the world was muggy and stung his eyes, the smell was unbearable, but he was getting used to it. He didn’t like that.

He looked around, most of the camp was still asleep, but Snipes knew that shouldn’t last, they still had a long road ahead of them. He wanted them to have their peace, but there was none of it to be had on the barren world. Snipes inhaled deeply again before wandering towards where Lambert slept.

“Hey, mate, wake up.”

Lambert grumbled and crawled up from the ground, like most others he was still wearing his helmet, Snipes had yet to see his face.

“Time to break camp?” he asked.

“Couple hours ago, figured your men could use the extra sleep though.”

“Thanks, but we’ll keep up.”

“Whatever you say.”

They broke camp then and began to move towards the base again, there wasn’t anything to be said, it was a solemn morning for all, exhaustion had already set in, and no one was happy. West against the wind and dust.

Of course, start off the goddamn morning in a dust storm.

The group slogged through the shifting sands, their weapons either slung over their backs or danging limply by their sides. Dante felt the sand impact his armour as he put one foot in front of the other and heard the constant pinging as grit wore away his armour and left lines of white in its carefully applied red-orange coating. Sniping 101, who was leading the group, took the worst of it, with his armour now more grey than red.

Lambert's men were in the rear, their heads down to reduce the possibility of their breathing in dust. Only two of the Captain's men still had helmets, and even those two seemed to be having difficulty. They'd wrapped rags around their faces in an attempt to block the sand, but without breathing filters there wasn't much they could do.

One of the helmetless stormtroopers suddenly stopped, and his comrade bumped into him.

"Hey, watch it!"

The man didn't seem to hear the rebuke, and instead clumsily tried to put his foot forwards. He wheezed, then fell to the ground and began coughing.

"Medic!"

The RAIDERS and Lambert's men turned around. The unfortunate stormtrooper was twisting in the sand now, hands grabbing at his own throat. Quickly, Celota crouched at his side and began to help. The trooper's airway was almost completely clogged up by particles.  After almost a minute, he'd recovered enough to get unsteadily to his feet and continue.

The group marched on, their ears filled with the howling of the dust storm and the occasional dull booming of artillery or turbolasers reminding them that there was another battle overhead. Dante's head began to spin as he watched the sand swirl in all directions. He caught himself just as the world began to blur, and focused his attention on the boots of the trooper in front of him. The group continued to move on, the airbourne winds wiping out their tracks behind them. Suddenly, Sergeant Battlemont held up his hand, and the group came to a sudden and ungraceful stop.

"We're going in circles. We've passed this cluster of boulders three times before."

Looking at the rocks, Dante realised that Sniping 101 was right.

We'll never get out of this desert in this weather...

"We'd better stop for now."

Captain Lambert simply nodded. He'd been subdued, even somewhat resigned. He certainly knew that the Major wouldn't welcome him back with open arms, yet he had still agreed to accompany the RAIDERS for reasons Dante didn't understand. He certainly seemed to be serious though, and the extra troops would come in handy, even if they slowed the RAIDERS down.

The Platoon and the RAIDERS had almost finished setting up camp when the first blaster bolt impacted. The energy beam hissed through the air, hitting one of Lambert's lightly armoured men. He screamed and fell, his strips of camouflage and flesh burning. All hell broke loose as half a dozen figures emerged from the maelstrom of swirling sand.

"Take them out!"

Famus looked down his scope into the sand that was coming at him like a blanket of dirt. The blaster fire continued to hit the confused group that was the RAIDERS and Lambert's men. "Dammit, where are they," shouted Famus to no one in particular. Dante responded, "Over there coming from behind those rocks. Famus aimed his A280 in the direction of the rocks and saw a figure emerge from behind the rock. The young trooper fired three shots and saw the figure drop like a wet rag in the wind.

The attack was beginning turn towards the RAIDERS advantage when the enemy turned to desperation. Famus was looking into the deadly dust twister when a rocket flew through air, smashing into the canyon. Sending huge boulders falling into Vast Empire troopers.

Famus jumped, barely dodging a boulder that landed where he was seconds before. The boulder would have surely ended Famus' life. What the hell just happened Famus slowly got up fighting the dusty wind pressuring him to stay down. Once he was finally up he grabbed his rifle and began firing again all the time surveying the damage the enemy had done. No one in the RAIDERS had been hit but, the Fire and Ice platoon was depleted and the enemy knew it.

The remnant troopers force were significantly larger than Famus had first thought. He had thought at most twenty to thirty opposition soldiers. He guessed now at about eighty. The enemy began moving towards the sides of the canyon firing as they went. Famus realized they were going to try and surround them and began shooting down as many enemy troopers as he could. He grabbed a grenade and chucked it at the group to his left. They yelled and jumped out of the way throwing themselves into the open and were then shot down. They took out about twenty on the left side almost taking out that side of the enemy formation. The rest of the left side group went in to panic backing up. They were shot at until no longer visible before Famus looked at the right side which was trying to retreat.

The right flank of the remnant troopers were hiding behind the fallen boulders and Snipes gave the order to began an offensive attack. The enemy troopers were killed before they could even utter the word surrender. The dust storm began to decline as did the enemy count. After another two minutes the wind had stopped and blaster fire in the canyon came to a halt.

Taking advantage of the sudden lull in the fighting, Dante crawled over  to a group of corpses to strip them of ammunition. Two had massive, carbonized craters in their chest armour, while the last had taken a blast cannnon shot in the face. Their weapons lay in the dust besides them.

The Gunnery Sergeant methodically opened magnetic clips and removed power cells from pouches. His gloves and knee armour became coated with blood as he worked, the dull red-brown stains almost unnoticeable against his pixelated camouflage. He glanced casually at the weapons, and stopped. There were a pair of badly battered E-11's, but the partially obscured rifle's butt was instantly recognizable.

Reaching over to the weapon, Dante pushed its former owner's limp arm aside and picked it up, running his hand over the dust covered barrel. The general outline was familiar, but the barrel was slightly longer than normal, and there was a scope. He looked through it to see if it worked, then nodded in satisfaction.

The anti-armour barrel and three rounds were nearby. Dante placed the rounds and the power cells in his waist pouches and held the DC-17 in his right hand. Behind him, the survivors of Fire and Ice Platoon were tending to their comrades and setting up turrets, while the other RAIDERS were retrieving ammunition from the dead.

Eventually, the multi-environment troopers filed into the impromptu  defended area. There were a trio of E-Web's and one of the platoon troopers was casually holding a J-9 rocket launcher.

The newest addition to the RAIDERS, one Otto Vox, was seated cross-legged in the middle of the group, his weapons lying at his side. Dante wasn't sure what to make of the Sergeant Major, who's name he recalled reading in old mission logs.

On one hand, he seemed competent enough and the available reports supported this conclusion. On the other hand, everything on the man after a certain point had been removed in a complete information blackout. That, plus the feeling of unease Dante had around him, made him wary.

The Sergeant Major got to his feet, retrieving his A-280 as he did so. He looked from side to side, then flicked off his rifle's safety.

"There's another group of those troopers making their way towards us. Just beyond those boulders."

Dante repressed a snort. There was no way for him to see that far in the still-raging storm. The man was obviously bluffing.

"How do you know?"

Dante noticed that Sniping101 had already gone, and he blinked. That was when the firing started.

A thermal detonator sailed through the air and detonated about half a meter above the ground, slicing through armour and energy shields like flimsy. Three troopers crumpled as the shrapnel and superheated gas tore through them, and their comrades ran to the barrier to take their place. It was a bad day for Fire and Ice Platoon.

The two remaining guns gutted identical-faced troopers by the dozens, blackened red and grey plastoid into smoking ash, but the enemy kept on coming.

That was when the miracle happened.

The squads of red armoured hostiles vanished in bursts of green light, followed moments later by crimson repeating blaster fire from the LAATi's troop bay. Two more of the dropships dropped from the dust clouds above, and white armoured troopers jumped out. A helmetless man with the rank insignia of Captain on his right shoulder strode towards the impromptu camp, his disdain evident in the sneer plastered across his face.

"RAIDERS Squad, I presume?"

Sniping 101 nodded, his posture slightly straighter than normal.

"I am Captain Drentan. I have orders to take you back to base, along with Lambert."

"Captain Lambert."

Lambert's voice was soft, but could be heard even over the sandstorm raging in the background. A twisted smile that made a mockery of mirth appeared on Drentan face.

"No, just Lambert. When we discovered your treason, you were relieved of your position."

Dante didn't have to ask who it had been rewarded to.

The newcomers were pushing the Fire and Ice Platoon survivors onto the dropships. One of them came over and shoved his rifle barrel into Lambert's back.

"Move."

The former Captain looked back, shrugged, then casually walked onto the waiting LAATi as though he was on the parade ground.

The RAIDERS climbed on, followed a moment later by Drentan, and the trio of troop transports climbed above the storm and vanished.

Again Otto was standing in the doorway of a LAATi. The trio of dropships was on its way back to base, over mostly neutral grounds. He still kept his senses attuned to any dangers though, careful not to allow anyone on board know his true background. Snipes was the only member in the Raiders that knew about his membership in the DJO, and he wished to keep it that way.

He was aboard the same dropship that had taken the former Captain Lambert captive, and he looked toward the man chained to the deck at the stern of the ship. Otto didn't know Lambert or his story. He just knew that for any officer to be stripped of their rank and command during a mission, he had to have performed an extreme act of treason. Obviously what that was, Otto had no idea. He probably find out later, if that was even necessary.

He could feel the anguish and hatred in the troopers of Fire and Ice toward their now former Captain. And he knew that there had been a connection between Lambert and many of them. Whatever he had done must have been completely out of character, or he was just really good at fooling those under him. Either that or they had all been involved in Lambert's treason and they were just pissed at him that they had gotten caught.

Either way, Otto was glad that Drentan had shown up. The member of the Fire and Ice platoon were sub-par and would have gotten all of them killed if they were allowed to stay with the Raiders. It wasn't Otto's place to say anything to any of the Raiders about this though, because honestly he hadn't been a member in over two years. The only member that he knew personally was Snipes. He'd heard of Dante and Marka through his reunions with active Army members, which mainly consisted of Rizzit. He liked to keep in contact with Rizz, especially after his return from exile in the Unknown Regions. So there were a few people that he had been kept in the loop about. Every other member of Raiders however, was foreign to him.

He turned his attention back to the barren land that the were flying over. They were most likely close to base. He knew that even though they were headed back to the safety of HQ, and that unless something had drastically changed in the 3 hours he'd been on this molten rock, this battle was definitely far from over.

Famus looked at the storm raging below the transport that would take them back to base. Treason, well that would explain Lambert's reluctance to return to base. Famus looked across the atmosphere of the hellish planet. The transport began to rise higher and the pilot shouted back, "We have enemies down below. Don't wanna take any chances." As these words came out the pilot's mouth blaster fire began hitting the transports. "Damn thats a nuisance," said Captain Drentan with a smirk. The newcomers gave a laugh. Thats when it hit the old transport.

Three rockets came from all angles. "Open the damn do-". The transport was bashed by the enemy bombardment. It ignited as it fell from the crimson sky. Famus heard Snipes yell,"Aw shit, brace for impact!" Everything went black and he was with Laura again and she said, "Get up", the beautiful girl he had once loved faded away and Famus was feeling a sense of searing pain and then heard a distance voice shout," Fuck, get him out of there, he's under that wreckage,"

Famus woke up with a gasp. He was being pulled out of burning wreckage by Snipes while the rest of the RAIDERS were firing into at the enemy that knocked the transport out of the sky. Famus laid on the the sand for a second and then he got up crouching around looking for a rifle while firing with his blaster pistol which was miraculously still intact. He found an E-11 with some amunition in the rubble of the former transport. Stood up and moved behind a rock formation. He began firing dropping three troopers coming out of the dust. Four minutes later the enemy either had been all killed or retreated. The newest squad member Otto Vox said,"There gone. We can start moving towards HQ." Famus looked at the veteran with a bit of curiousness and shrugged.

Just then they heard a groan from the wreckage. Lambert stumbled out with a dazed look. The squad raised their rifles. "Don't move traitor," said Dante. The former captain rased his arms and said," Okay, just don't kill me!"
