* A woman who works in a used bookstore finds a photograph of herself in one of the books brought in for resale. She looks outside and sees the man who just sold them to her watching her. She is afraid she is being stalked. Depending on the slant of the story, the photograph could be compromising, or not.

* A law-abiding citizen comes home after a long day at work and finds a dead body on his kitchen floor.

* A lifeguard at a surf contest must rescue a surfer in a storm, creating great risk to herself and her team. In addition, the person she must save has done a terrible wrong to her, and she must overcome her grudge to save him.

* A woman brings home a pair of ivory knitting needles from an antique shop. She later discovers the knitting needles are enchanted and have a dark side to them, one that includes murder.

* A woman takes in her nephew as a foster child when her sister and brother-in-law are sent to jail for drugs. The nephew has a major disability, and it puts such a strain on the family that the woman decides to tell the social worker to put him in a different foster home. The story would be about how this affects the family.

* A young girl in the 18th century is an herbal healer. She is well respected because her cures work, and she is friends with everyone in the community. Yet when it is revealed that she is a witch, she is ostracized and is forced to leave town or face death. The story would be one of her survival in a new life.

* In a future dystopian society, people have decided that God is the ultimate healer and that doctors are from the devil. A man and woman practice medicine in secret, and start an underground revolution to usurp the powers that be.

* A teenage boy wants to be part of the "in" crowd, so he has a computer chip implanted in his brain that makes him popular. He soon finds out that popularity comes with its own set of problems, and he tries to get the chip removed. He finds out that removing the chip is impossible because he will have brain damage. Or it could be that he signed a non-revocable contract for a lifetime of wearing the chip.


These ideas can go off in any tangent, and do not have to be followed exactly as described. Readers are welcome to contribute more story prompts of their own in the comments.
