“ACCESS APPROVED” the computer echoed, the electronic doors sliding open. Darr-Rann walked through, looking around him.

Computer monitors lined the walls of the room, and a table sat at it’s center. Darr-Rann recognized Major Valen, the man who had trained him through the Phantom Project. The major sat at the end of the table, reviewing a document on his datapad. “Sit.” He said, so Darr-Rann took a seat opposite to him.

A few moments later, the doors slid open again. Darr-Rann looked back to see Rogueboy walk in. The Major nodded him, and gestured towards a chair. As Rogueboy took his seat, Major Valen spoke.

“Alright, now that your both here, it’s time to explain why I’ve summoned you.” He said, putting the datapad down on the table.

“As you know, the Phantom project has been on hold for the last few months. The VEI had unfortunately been shaken up thoroughly by other matters, and we had to divert our attention from trial projects such as this one.

“But now that has been dealt with, and I have managed to have the project’s budget and staff reapproved. However, command wishes to test us before going ahead.”

He then stood up, turning his back on the two troopers to walk over to a console. He pressed a few keys, and a large screen directly across them flickered to life. A picture of a bald man who appeared to be in his late forties appeared on the screen.

“This is Tokrin Brin, arms dealer. For the last eight months we have been working with him in order to gain access to intelligence on criminal activities within Vast Imperial space. However, two weeks ago, he double-crossed us. He fed us information that led to an ambush, one that cost us two good squads of stormtroopers.

“He’s since fled to his base of Jaan, a fairly bleak and resourceless moon. He’s protected by plenty of armed guards and computerized defense systems. Normally we’d just dispatch a company of troopers to send him to hell, but instead command has decided to let us take a shot at him first.”

He turned off the screen and walked back over to the table, sitting down once more.

“Your mission is pretty simple. You’ll enter the facility, find him, and kill him. You aren’t to leave any trace – Don’t engage any enemy you don’t have to. Command will be reviewing this one, so be perfect. The future of the project depends on a nice, clean mission.”

“I want you to report to the private hangers in four hours. There you will board the ship N-322k and depart for your mission. All of your equipment will be provided to you there.

He stood up, so Darr-Rann and Rogueboy quickly did the same.  “Good luck. You have the honor of being picked for Phantom’s first mission. Don’t screw it up.”

Yeah sure the briefing and mission seemed simple; kill a former womp rat who had helped the VE and do not leave a trace, sure he is cowering behind thick stones, and behind the backs of other men. However unlike most missions the squad gets assigned to; they now have four hours in which they must remember all the floor plans of building, all the guard posts/locations and Tokrin’s daily routine. How the VEI got this information? They would not tell Rogueboy, however he did have ideas; either a disgruntled guard, or someone within Tokrin’s employ is a problem drinker and spilled the blue milk or in this case, the ale.

The duo would be undergoing an experimental subdermal communication implants just before the flight so that they could communicate without saying a word. In the meantime they were planning their point of ingress. “We’re obviously not going to go through the front door, if we scale this wall.” Darr said pointing at the hologram of Tokrin’s base on Jaan. “We hide in this garden bed for ten minutes as the patrols pass by, than we could run to the door. Once inside there will be a guard that patrols the staircase, we could try to avoid him by hiding in this room or we could neutralize him and hide the body in the room.” The plan was beginning to fall into place and before they knew it, two hours had passed and they had to go into surgery.

The operation was a success albeit fairly painful, and Rogue had a small scar behind his ear, which would make it harder to explain to Namyr that he had come into the base to do some paperwork. However he was unable to tell Namyr the truth that he was specifically chosen for a squad that doesn’t exist in order to silently keep things under control, by any means necessary.

Stop thinking about Namyr, it will only make you hesitate in the field. The thought came in as Darr’s voice and Rogue was unsure if it was because of the implant or because it was something Darr had told him in the past.

Darr is that you? Of course it is.

A female VEI secretary walked by and Rogue could not resist the temptation to take a look. Rogue! Darr mentally yelled. What? I’m not dead yet let me enjoy my galactic pleasures. He retorted. Shut up Rogue, let’s go get our damn equipment.

This damned thing… Darr-Rann thought to himself, rubbing the scar where the implant had been placed.

As a part of their equipment, the Phantoms were to be fitted with a voice-free communications implant. Basically, by thinking, one could turn the device on and send a message to other phantoms on the channel. The surgeon who had put his in had told the squad leader that it would only work if you turned it on, and only then if you specifically directed the message. Apparently, Rogueboy was having difficulty with his, judging by the barrage of images the squad leader had been put through.

One thing Darr-Rann noticed about the communicator was that use for more then about ten seconds at a time produced mild headaches – Not exactly solidifying his confidence in the device.

He checked his equipment. They wore a light, unmarked shadowsilk suit, with a small supply pack on the back and nightvision/tactic HUD goggles over the eyes. Additionally, they each carried a combat knife that had been treated with anti-reflectant and a 10mm slugthrower pistol with silencer. They weren’t heavily armed, but the mission plan called for stealth rather then firepower.

He looked over to Rogueboy, who was similarly equipped. “You ready?” He asked. The other Phantom nodded.

“Apparently, we were supposed to get better gear then this under Phantom’s original specifications. It looks like command wants us to earn it.”

He checked the time on his heads-up display. It was time to go to the ship.

Supposedly he was able to shut it off with a mental command but it was either not working or Rogueboy had absolutely no idea how to control it. However he was able to see the pained expression on Darr’s face as random thoughts penetrated into Rogue’s mind and he sent them along to Darr, not a few of which were images of Namyr and Rogue together and elements from his childhood. Turn off, turn the bloody hell off. The facial expression from Darr instantly changed to that of normalcy, and he looked at Rogue with understanding in his eyes.

They headed towards the hangars without a word said between the two, in the two years that they had been together they had shared more about themselves (even if it was a little one-sided) Rogue wasn’t even a hundred percent sure what he had revealed to Darr or how much he did. Looking at his shadowsuit Rogue wondered how much it had cost the VEI, hell he knew their training must have cost a lot. Even if they were already well trained troops its harder than one thinks to have a soldier who is taught to think as an unit to start thinking for himself. It had come more naturally to Darr then it did to Rogue and that was mostly because of Darr’s previous experiences that Rogue had heard from Kal, he had become good friends with the pilot since he had flown them to some desolate planet full of unfriendly people that wanted Raiders dead.

The ship took off not long after they had boarded, and they began their wayward journey to Jaan where they would meet someone and kill him. Rogue pulled out his silenced slugthrower and pulled out the ammo clip, quickly counting he had twelve shots with one in the chamber of lethal ammo, and two clips of twelve of non-lethal, hopefully he wouldn’t have to use the non-lethal and only one shot of the lethal. Of course making prayers to fickle gods was never really Rogue’s thing, they tended to ignore him he was convinced he was on some sort of ban list.
