Name your three favorite authors of the science-fiction or fantasy genre.  Doesn't have to be Star Wars.  Doesn't matter when they lived and wrote. Include some viable reasons as to why you like them and what separates them from other similar authors.   ----------------------- "The war was like a bloody dream; I cannot tell How many heathen souls I sent to a fiery Hell, I only know that above the fallen ones I heard dark Odin shouting to his sons, And felt amid the battle's roar and thunderous shock The strive of mighty gods that crashed in Ragnarok." --- Conn's Saga

Okay, well, lemme think of that one... I'd have to say JRR Tolkien hands down.  In the hobbit, he's writing like it's just a few guys sitting in a bar and he's telling you a story he heard once.  Like, "Lemme tell ya a bit about hobbits.  These little schmucks GOT FUR ON THEIR FEET!!"  That's the way I really got into him in the first place.  Also, the way he could spend eight pages describing a tree, and when I walk away, I feel like I have seen the tree, that I know every little bit about the tree, and I'm glad I heard about this fantastic tree.  His ability to tell stories, and to describe the most trivial things as if they are the most important in the world, while making it enjoyable, that's why he's my favorite author. Robert Jordan possesses the same talent, albeit at a rather lower level. Douglas Adams, on the other hand, is just plain funny.   ----------------------- Captain Riel Fury Navy Executive Officer Raptor Five Founder of Aegis Squadron

hmmm, 3 Authors, well as Riel said, JRR Tolkien for the fantasy sector and for the Science fiction, the very good science fiction ..... Isaak Asimov, the grandfather of perfect Science Fiction, or every SW Reader must know them .. Timothy Zahn and Michael Stackpole. And last but not least an author which in my opinion is also one of the best in the sci-fi scene ... David Gerrold. Anybody read the books with the Starwolf?   ----------------------- EFM/WO2 Warmaker/Viper 3-2/WING I/mSSD Atrus/VE/VEN (=A=) (=SA=) (=JCPA=) (=SCPA=) [VC-B] You can run but you cannot hide

I'd have to say Tolkien without a doubt. I have read the Hobbit and half of Fellowship, but what I did, I liked. The only reason I didn't finish was cause of school assigned readings and I didn't have copies of the book myself, so I had to deal with the school library. And keep in mine, the nearest library outside of school was 30 minutes away. Next, I'd have to say Robert Jordan. I love the Wheel of Time, although I'm only on the second book, but he is a great writer. Next I would probably have to say Timothy Zahn. He is books are amazing. Of course that is a SW writer, but the books are great. I'd also like to add that all of the SW authors are good. I recommend the books to everyone, even if they don't like SW.

Well, like many who have read his books, I like Zahn a lot. I like Stackpole too... However, Orson Scott Card's Ender's Game, Ender's Shadow, and Shadow of the Hegemon were excellent books. So he's definatly got a vote. Douglas Adams as well, any of you who have not read the Hitchhiker's  Guide to the Galaxy now have an assignment to do so before the end of the month. I can't say anything about Tolkien, I'm gonna start Fellowship later today :P

Tom Clancy - Because his ability to describe characters, situations, and locations is amazing.  His novel's are the best! R.L. Stine - I used to read his  Goosebumps books for a long time.  I still re-read them from time-to-time because they're easy-reading and enjoyable. H.G. Wells - Because The Time Machine was a great book!  His fiction is most enjoyable.

Steven King would have to be my first pick.  He really has human nature and the human mind down to a T.  His character development is incredible,( though he is kind of a jerk in the way he makes you fall in love with a character and then kills them off.) Tolkien would have to be my next choice.  His works are a masterpeice that create whole worlds and make great reading.  I couldn't put his books down. My third favorite is Micheal Stackpole.  He manages to combine the action with just enough humor to make it a memorable work.  i especially enjoyed his Wriath Squadron Run. Lastly would be Tom Clancy.  He isn't a Sci Fi author, but he is a master storyteller that describes the way politics and the world works in a way that allows you to feel like you are there seeing the wheelings and dealings.

I thought Alliston wrote the Wraith Squadron books? Ohh, and I liked Stackpoles I, Jedi a whole lot, I've read it at least 3 times. Especally for those Jedi out there, it gives us a look at first hand usage of the Force, and al lot of insight as to what should go into saber creation.

Dang, you like to ask the hard questions, Spartacus. :P My favorite fantasy authors are Tolkien and Jordan. My favorite sci-fi authors are Clarke and Bradbury. Star Wars wise I like Stackpole and Zahn the best. And yes, I know that's six, not three, but I don't care.

Ah, thx guys.  I am having to read some tedious novels for English class dealing with melodramatic characters and social situations. Now I will have some more provactive authors to look up when I next stop by the bookstore.  Danke.

William Gibson for his insightful views of what the world could be like. (With Neal Stephenson being a runner up on that.) Either George Alex Effinger or David Wingrove for presenting the future from an Arab/Muslim and Chinese view, respectively.  The former series (When Gravity Fails, etc.) is funny, the latter (Chung Kuo) an epic piece of work. Tad Williams - Otherland embodies a bit of all I like in SF.  It's edgy, touchingly hoaky at times, and always entertaining. /me hears two small coins hit the pot.

Well it has to be Terry Pratchett. Without him the world of fantasy would be a much less happy place. What sets him apart? Well, the fact that he is so funny and the way he portrays our world in such a different but similar way with the discworld. Second will have to be Douglas Adams. One of the funnyist men alive. Third is Grant Naylor (actually 2 people. Rob Grant and Doug Naylor) They wrote Red Dwarf. The funniest sci-fi TV show. Ever!   ----------------------- Petty Officer 2nd Class Corran Navy Training Officer Adjutant FL/PO2 Corran/Viper 3-1/1/mSSD Atrus/1ESF/VE/VEN/(=A=)(=MA=) Given that God is infinite, and that the universe is also infinite, would you like a toasted teacake? - Talkie Toaster - Red Dwarf
