So... since it doesn't look like anyone has really done this yet, I'm going to start a thread to talk about Episode III.

PLEASE - try to keep this spoiler-free until after the movie comes out. Thanks.

First of all, I've read the novelization and it was the best of the three movie novelizations. Personally, I've enjoyed each book better than each movie, and I'll be interested to see if that trend continues. But even if the movie isn't as good as the book, it looks like it has a shot to be the best of the prequels... although that might not be saying much for some.

Secondly, I thought I'd brag a little and say that I'm getting to see the movie on May 12th at the Uptown Theatre in Washington, D.C. My girlfriend bought me a charity ticket to the event for my college graduation present so that I can see the movie. I wouldn't have been able to see it for a long time otherwise because I ship out for the Army on May 18th. So, I'm pretty psyched about that.

If anyone doesn't mind spoilers and wants to know how the movie was, look for me on IRC after the 12th.

Otherwise, I'll let this post sit here for a couple of weeks until the movie comes out unless some of you want to discuss the book in a relatively spoiler-free fashion.

Same here. I'm full of spoilers. And I read somewhere that the tickets for those charity events are $500.00 a piece. Of course, it's for two good causes: charity, and to see Episode III before most other people!

There is one spoiler i do wanna know so I'll ask it here: does darth Vader use his lightsaber at all in this movie or is it all just anakin swinging fun? i hope that question makes sense. A simple yes or no would do for me.

The only thing I hate about the trailors is that one corny part where Obi-wan is all sweaty on that volcano and screams,'You were the Chosen One!'.Everytime I think about it I hear him say it in this high pitched squeeky girly voice.

There's actually a lot of theories about that. One I always laugh about is that the second name is the root of certain rather violent, evil words like:

yeah, i'm just wondering so i could be offended if it wasnt Dark Father, being as thats what the name supposedly means in Latin, not speaking latin myself i must take others words for that one, but it makes sense. and it would seem odd that he had to of deliberately chosen words that ment 'dark father' and then given them a diffrent in Star Wars meaning would be. . .idiodic

Yes, it's Germanic.

Lucas originally chose Darth Vader to mean Dark Father, because Vader is (duh) Luke's dad.

Will he try to explain Vader into meaning something else in Episode III? I doubt it. He'll probably just leave it COMPLETELY unexplained, like he does with so many other things (re: Force ghosts, Shmi's immaculate conception, Palpatine's age, etc.)

or does it? thats what we're tryin to figure out, i would thing it would by the mear fact that it has meaning here so there must have been a reason behind Lucas selection of it, a reason that seems blatantly obvious, so why would he change the meanings for the sake of a fictional universe, i'm sure he changed the language, its not germanic, but i'm sure it means Dark Father in the SW universe. either that or it has no meaning beyond a name in the SW universe, but is a nice sort of 'easter egg' type deal for those of us on this side of the silver screen

Since you guys can't seem to settle on where the term Darth Vader came from, translating it to English to Dark Father, I'll settle it for you.  It's Dutch.  Yes, that's right Dutch.  Trust me.  None of the weird language he uses in the movies is actually made by him.  Such as Greedo talking in Rodian.  It's a dead language from South America.  So is Huttese I believe also.  Quite interesting stuff actually.

Good lord.  And someone inform all those folks in Ecuador and Peru that their language is dead as well.  Last I heard, Quechua is alive and well and is taught in schools and used for everyday conversation.

That said, while Lucas didn't employ people to make Tolkienesque languages, there are "common" terms that have come into an agreeable consensus.
