Weirdness...

Okay, something odd just happened, and I was wondering if anyone here could explain it.
I was just standing out back having a quiet smoke, and the whole sky (mainly clear with some fast-moving clouds) flashed white three times, kinda like a lightning flash. Once longer flash (around half a second) followed by two short flashes in quick succession.
I saw some white spotlight type things over the trees, but I didn't think high powered spotlights could cause the whole damn sky to flash white. And they disappeared near as soon as I saw them. Anyone know WTF I just saw?
Oh, and I waited five minutes and there wasn't even a murmur of thunder to accompany it.
And it's night here. ----------------------- Ramon Stonefish

You have just been visited by aliens.
Okay, I seriously think it was a Close Encounter of the First Kind. I've seen similiar things, but not entirely like what you said. Were they balls of light, or disks?

I saw the whole sky flash white, and something like the beams from high-power spotlights waving around over the trees, but the source was obscured.
TBH, the whole episode freaked me out some, and I wasn't hanging around to see if anything came back up over the trees.

Thin, light clouds. Thin enough that I could see the moon and most of the brighter stars through them. --I should add I could see the moon clearly through them, including the crater details.
That also doesn't explain the spotlights I saw.
Before anyone asks: I'm not a UFO nut, I haven't been drinking anything alcoholic, and the only other drugs in my system should be nicotine and caffeine.
Seriously weird. I'd love to think it was electrical discharge, but that would surely be a localised phenomenon, not a camera-like flash across the whole of my view of the sky.

Yeah, after googling a bit to see if I could find out what I saw, I read about Iridium flares. Someone even has a pic on their site.

Well, if it was sunlight reflected by a satellite, it still wouldn't account for the whole sky flashing. ----------------------- Revenge is what holds this galaxy together. Without it, the universe would be a boring place.

Two questions: Was it night, and where do you live/is it summer time?
We used to get that all the time in Pittsburgh (don't know why I haven't seen it since I moved...) Called it "heat lightning." Don't know the science behind it. Probably static or something. ----------------------- XO/FL/WO2 Chipmunk Man/Kaph 9/Phoenix/mSSD Atrus/DEF/VEN/VE/(=A=)(=SA=)[LoC][MC:1][LSM][MC:1]

You probably just saw "heat lightning". Run a Google search for it. It used to happen all of the time at various places I've lived (back when I lived in the southern part of the US.) If it was heat lightning, then don't worry - it's harmless. ----------------------- NTAC/COM Darkhawk/Raptor 9/mSSD Atrus/DEF/VEN/VE/(=MA=)(=SCPA=)(=FCO=)[LoC][BRC][CBV*][MC:1][VC:Ebony][KC:OC]

not nessaceraly, the thunder can be unable to reach your ears for quiet a few reasons.
But, the things is, lightnings comes and goes really fast, I'm not sure if they can light up the sky for almost half a minute.

Well I've seen a thunder storm at 8am when the temperature was -20celcius, it was sunny with just a few clouds and snowing. So lightning could probably happen just about anytime. ----------------------- *DarkDragoons*

It's true. No lightning is not dependant on the outside temperature. It's all about moisture in the upper atmosphere and the +/- charges of the Earth.
And to agree with chipmunk man, I've seen heat lightning occur for several seconds at a time over a long duration of time. And I have never heard it accompanied by thunder. ----------------------- NTAC/COM Darkhawk/Raptor 9/mSSD Atrus/DEF/VEN/VE/(=MA=)(=SCPA=)(=FCO=)[LoC][BRC][CBV*][MC:1][VC:Ebony][KC:OC]

Could also have been transformers blowing on power lines.
Heat lightning usually only happens when its humid doesnt it?
And real lightning is caused by the collisions of different forms of ice in the upper atmosphere, (i.e. snow, hail, sleet) which separates the particles into +/- ion. The - rises and the + falls. That's why in a thunder storm you have cloud to cloud and cloud to ground lightning.

I don't think humidity is the only thing that causes heat lightning. I used to live in a place where in the summer we would get days that would hit 30 degrees celcius but the humidity rarely crept over 35%, most of the time it was well under 30% ----------------------- *DarkDragoons*

I learned Kelvin in 6th grade science, so yea, you should. it's the third form of temperature units. and the numbers are very high compared to the other two. i think 0C is some where in the 200's in Kelvin ----------------------- -(William the Conquerer)-
