  DOOM - The Movie
September 25, 2004 5:14:53 PM    View the profile of Cosmic

"The recent success of Doom 3 in sales has given a boost to plans for the Doom movie which now has an officially confirmed cast and a steady director.
Dwayne Johnson, better known as The Rock, is now definitely doing the movie while Karl Urban, of Lord of the Rings fame, is also included in the cast list.

Urban, who recently appeared in The Chronicles of Riddick, is used to being cast as the bad guy in movies. Both in the Chronicles and in the Bourne Supremacy, Urban was on the wrong side of viewers affections. This time however, intriguingly, Urban is rumoured to be John Grimm, leader of a special operations team which visits Mars space station in order to combat a demonic invasion.

This leaves a question mark hanging over Mr. Johnson's part in the venture. If we eliminate all other factors, the one which remains must be the truth... so if The Rock isn't a good guy he must be a Bad guy and if that is the case it is unlikely that The mighty Rock would accept the role of a goon, so the most likely part for DJ is likely to be that of The Devil. It's too soon to have any confirmation on that but it is an exciting and positive concept, after all The Rock has never played the bad guy since launching his career as the Scorpion King in The Mummy Returns.

Such a part in a major production would mark an important stage in The Rock's career as he will be joining a small but elite group of actors who have portrayed Evil One, including Al Pacino and Robert De Niro. The Rock himself had, a couple of months ago in an interview with Empire, stated that he will be playing the ultimate bad guy.

The Doom movie project, which will follow a storyline similar to that of the Doom 3 video game, recently was handed to a new director, Andrzej Bartkowiak who has photographed an impressive selection of movies including another Evil project, The Devil's Advocate.

According to the latest news, Doom is being pushed full-steam-ahead, with shooting expected to start in mid-October, meaning that this may become DJs next project rather than John Woo's Spy Hunter.

One worrying aspect of this let's do this thing attitude may be the rumour suggesting that the movie may release in Summer 2005. Although perfectly feasible, such a release may mean that quality will be sacrificed in order to capitalize on the success of the game in time. After all the movie will be judged on how well it manages to recreate the tense atmosphere of the game and how creepy and scary it manages to become, no small task for any cast or director. We wholeheartedly wish the best of luck to the project since its success may help raise the quality level of all future game-to-movie projects."

A lot of fans of Splinter Cell want to see that made into a movie. Might be interesting.

possibly, sence i believe they made the game from a book, but its not a run and gun shooter, like doom, what, are they just going to have realy stunning visuals in that too? how cn they possibly make that good, i was suprised how well they did with AvP, it was half decent

Holly Wood is starving for money...  Remember 'The Spirit's Within"?  They had around 200 people working on that one film, and everyone hated it.  On Advent Children, they have 40, and its one of the most talked about premier movies.

My bet is, that this movie will suck horribly in more than one way...  Alien vs. Predator was a get quick rich sceem in my opinion...

I loved FF: TSW. No, it didn't play out at all like how any of the Final Fantasy games play out, but it was, in my opinion, a good movie. I would eagerly watch a sequal or a similar film.

Alien Vs. Predator I liked as well. I like the previous four Alien films, and I thought this one was just as good, if not better (due to the Predators being present).

The Hunt For Red October was an excellent film. The Sum of All Fears was decent. Net Force I really didn't like. The story was good as usual (the books are always awesome), but how the movie was made was crap. The camera angles and view made it look a lot like a soap opera.

Doom... hmm... don't know about that one. I'm all for terrifying films, but the game is a just a shooter. Hollywood filmmakers would definately have to incorporate a lot of story/dialogue to make the movie worth seeing.

Speaking of Tom Clancy there, I'd love to see Rainbow Six in theaters. That book was just plain awsome...

I'd love to see Michael DiMercurio's Phoenix Subzero made into a movie. His details in submarine warfare are superior to that of Clancy.

"Michael DiMercurio was an honors graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, a National Science Foundation scholar at MIT, a graduate of th Navy Nuclear Training Program, and a Navy diver. While a lieutenant, he served as a chief nuclear engineer qualified officer and ship's diver on the USS Hammerhead, a Sturgeon-class fast-attack nuclear submarine of the Atlantic Fleet. DiMercurio and the Hammerhead spent more than fifty days trailing Russian nuclear submarines."

That was an awesome book.

I felt the same way about the Spirits within, it simply sucked because we all expected the prescence of past FFs.  I played the game Rainbow six before I read the book, that would make an excellent movie.

Rainbow 6 would ake a great movie.  I am a little worried about Doom, though, because there is no story.  I love Doom as much as the next guy, but the storyline isn't even close to being feasable.  Works for a shooter, but as a movie I doubt it will fly.
