I read a lot of books, and would be happy to recomend some for you.
The Killer Angels by Mike Shaara is about the battle of Gettysburg, very well written and can be enjoyed by both Confederates and Yankees.
I, Claudius is great, it's a faux auto-biography of the Roman emporer Tiberius Claudius, and the author is a genius. It's actually as if Claudius is speaking directly to the reader, and very nice to read. For a slightly easier level,
The Dark is Rising by Susan Cooper (I think) was a good book, though I read that years ago. It's about a kid who finds himself in the middle of a war between secret forces of good and evil.
