Could anyone give me some honest opinions about these areas/universities
canada:
University of Toronto
University of British Columbia
McGill University
USA:
University of Virginia
I'm thinking of applying for a semester abroad next year, even though i'm not sure it will be possible on my degree.

My brother went to the University of Virginia and really liked it there. I've visited the campus a few times and it looks really nice. I believe the acedemics there are good as well. Can't say much more than that as I didn't go there. Don't know anything about the Canadian Universities. -----------------------

University of Toronto is a massive university, rather pricey...can run up to around 6k a year easily. Multiple campuses in downtown Toronto.
University of British Columbia, excellent for engineering...however is struggling a little bit
McGill...great university. Cheap because of government capped tuitions...as far as I know that cap applies to international students as well but you had better check that. Canadians pay 3,300 with a 50% discount for those born in Quebec. It might be 5k for international students...again not sure.
McGill is a good science university and has a great reputation for its professional schools along with University of Toronto. What are you going into Raz...I can give you more info based on that.
All three are great universities but Id say put UBC at the bottom of your options of these three. -----------------------

As for areas. UBC again would be the worse outta the three Id say. Toronto is a large city, which has its good and bad points. Not the cheapest city by far in Canada, apartments are rather pricey as are most other things...pricey by Canadian standards keep in mind. In the economist comparison of city prices with new york=100 toronto ranks around a 76 i believe.
Montreal is another large city. one thing you want to do is ensure that if you dont live in residence, you find an apartment in the English districts. There are some districts where they refuse to speak anything but French so be forwarned. Apartment prices arent too bad, you can get a nice small apartment for 700 a month and close to McGill. My friend got one within 10 minute walk of the campus and right by a small mall, grocery store and bus routes.
Both are culturally rich cities if that kind of stuff interests you. ANything else you need to know just say and Ill try and give ya some more info. -----------------------

Virginia is pretty good in sports and academia...my english teacher went there and he is the single smartest guy I have ever met that works in the English department. And, it is in a nice area, fairly near to places where you can chill out and stuff. -----------------------

Well i'm a physics student, so obviously has to have a high standard department. I'm doing a theoretical astrophysics degree so it should really have an astronomy research group (most have, i know for sure toronto does)
Erm in terms of the city i'd just like it to have a good variety of places to drink, not too dangerous and some nice quiet places nearby.

Montreal is the place for bars, pubs, strip clubs, and anything type of club that you desire to patron. If you want to drink in a quiet area, booze is sold in liquor stores so bring it to where you might life if you want
There are also some nice quiet french cafes and stuff.
Montreal isnt too dangerous...Id say Toronto is the more dangerous of the two cities.
Toronto...got lots of bars as well...hell in most parts of canada there is a large variety of places to drink...lol.
For astrophysics Id say UofT might be a better choice...im not sure how McGill rates in terms of physics. McGill is best known for its law and medical programs...though all its programs rank highly. UofT is known for medicine and science.

Ya my cousin is going to McGill and he seems to really like it. Plus I dont know if this will make a difference but the legal drinking age in quebec is 18 and in Toronto its 19. -----------------------

Erm, I disagree with Darkhawk, but anyways. Excepting one or two colleges and the military academies, you can get booze on any college campus for free if you are up for raves. Or you can go and steal their beer, and then go back to wherever you came from. -----------------------

Okay. UVA really isn't that bad. I almost went there, after all. I'm just supposed to hate it because it is my school's... academic... rival. Charlottesville is a nice town, and Virginia is a nice state, but you might be better off partying in Canadia. -----------------------
