So, a little research tells me that although the AN-94 is approved, most special forces are still using the AK-74M with a few units going to an AK-100 type series.  You can imagine that the regular troops are still carting around their standard issue weapons that have been in stock for decades. So I would have to give the real life correct answer to Warmaker as he has the greatest combination of OOB info that you seem to have tapped into and real life data (namely, what the Russians have actually managed to find the money to buy).

So....your Light Colonel is a member of the Russian armed forces? Like I (and others) have stated before, just because some units may have the gear...and the paperwork says all of them do, reality most likely plays another tune.  The US has more defense spending than most continents combined and we still took forever to roll out M-249s instead of M-60s for SAWs and M-1s in place of M-60s for tanks.  Don't believe everything that you read, breathe, and have whispered into your ear late nights at the bar.

The 7.62S version is primarily used by airborne and combat engineers, while the 9mmSP5/SP6 version is the more common one, used by Spetsnaz and Alpha teams. The Groza has a 75% parts commonality with the AK-74. When mounted with the GP-25, a single trigger fires both the assault rifle and grenade launcher, with the selector lever switching between the weapons. The Groza can mount the PSO-1 sight used on the SVD and SVU sniper rifles, and is threaded for a suppressor. Its a rifle, not a gun. A rifle is a gun with a rifled barrel. A gun is a gun without a rifled barrel, and usually uses gunpowder. I know the Russian economy is in a bad way, but I have a feeling they've advanced past gunpowder.
