We've been having a lot of problems with hackers toying with our email system. I kept having emails returned to me that I had never sent. And I doubt that Kadann would take what time he doesn't have to send you a link to a funny page. Just a hunch. Maybe next time you should tell someone in the HC through email or on IRC instead of posting it on the Main ComNet for all to see. -----------------------

I think its important for all to see something like this because now I know that someone toys with the VE's e-mail. Perhaps multiple people have this same problem.
You know now that I check my e-mail, I got a similar message from Corran. And I got a anti-worm message from Slacker12UK. weird.

I've had a couple of emails like that. I think what it does is sends an email to you and then looks to see who you have recently recieved an email from and changes it's information to say it's from them.
As far as I can tell, the only way it can damage your computer is if you open the attachments that come with it. I've had a few of these emails sofar and they have all had 2 attachments, one is usually a html file and the other is an .exe or an undefined file.
So if you see an email with attachmentsdon't open the attachments unless you are expecting an email with attachments. If you do open the attachment it will infect your computer with the Klez32 virus/worm.
Another strange thing is that all the emails I got claimed to be from people in the Vast Empire. And also the name in the 'from' field will be the first part of the email address so if the email address it is claiming to be from is [email protected] then the name in the 'from' field will be monkey256.
So be careful and don't blame the person who it claimes to be from, it's not their fault. -----------------------

I recently received two of these - one from JMac and one from Face. I'm just glad I read this before I went off on them for trying to send me a virus. heh Let's hope no one in the VE actually GETS a virus from this crap. -----------------------

It doesn't take too much to check Symantec or McAfee or whatever site you choose to read security-wise. There are half a dozen listservs you can join to get updated virus information, or just read C|net news every so often.
Like anything else, think before acting and realize that if Kadann wanted to talk to each individual member, he'd make us come here or hit the main page.
If there is actually a clamor for sites of this nature, I'll post the ones I check on occasion. Otherwise, open up a browser, hit Google, type some keywords, click OK and see what comes up. -----------------------

Now, the only time you should expect to see an email from any of these places is in the following conditions:
1) You have joined the vast empire.
2) You have submitted a form that requires us to send you additional information, (We will usually tell you that we are sending you an email on the webpage)
3) you have requested a bank transfer, forgotten your password or anything else.
I will go through most of the domain code this weekend sometime to add the letters 'VE:' to the begining of every email subject sent out by a webpage so that you will know wether or not you're gonna have problems with the email or not. I will post a reply here when this is done. Till then, If you are not expecting an email from any of those above email addresses, delete it.
