Thought I'd start a thread for discussing the old Expanded Universe, now dubbed "Legends" by Disney. We already have new canon, replacing some of the old. But is there anything VE members hope Disney will retain? Anything you'd like to see saved, if possibly reworked?
I'm probably not alone in saying I'd like to see the character of Thrawn make an appearance, at some point. I don't need every plot point, from that trilogy of books (The Katana Fleet? Clones-as-the-answer 2.0?), but I liked the idea of a grand strategist for the Empire, who was just
smarter than "the good guys," and who had his own vision of why the Empire was necessary and good for the galaxy. I liked that he fought for that idea, even though some parts of the idea's execution (namely, the speciesism of Palpatine's regime) actually hurt him, personally.
The thing I'm most happy to see, though, is that Disney is including a much broader range of characters, now that they've taken over the franchise. In the Force Awakens, we have a latino actor, a black actor, and a female actor forming the new hero trifecta, and that
matters. In Aftermath, the first new canon novel, there's a (not completely evil) Imperial Admiral who is a woman of color, a deeply flawed but viewpoint character (alcoholic former Imperial secret police officer) who happens to be a gay man, and several mentions of women with wives, or an orphan's departed "two fathers." It makes the Galaxy far, far away feel more real, no matter who you are, and for those of us among the fans who aren't straight white dudes, it's great to finally see characters meant for us to imagine ourselves as.
How about the rest of you? If you had the chance to become the new arbiter of what is/isn't canon, under Disney, what would you choose to keep? What would you change? Why?
